Superb customer service! After visiting several furniture stores over the past year and not finding what I wanted, I tried Kuhnhausen’s with their friendly, helpful staff. Unlike Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams where I was ignored by three salespersons while circling the showroom repeatedly(well not entirely ignored, a tall improbable blonde give me a look of disdain), Shelley and other Kuhnhausen’s staff greet upon entry, ask if they can help, and don’t hover. No hard sell, either(unlike Fishel’s). Kuhnhausen’s carries Biltwell sofas and loveseats that can be customized to a considerable degree(number of cushions, arm style, straight or T back, cushion firmness, fabric, leg color, and welting). The base price with the standard fabric was $ 1185 for a sofa and $ 995 for a loveseat. After choosing some more expensive options/fabrics, the two pieces totaled $ 3799, including delivery. Biltwell furniture is made locally — and importantly, without fire retardant(with its concomitant health risks). Overall, the furniture looks great, although on delivery there was some puckering along the edges of the back cushions. When I pointed this out to Shelley she volunteered to retrieve them and have Portland-based Castellano(the manufacturer) add additional filling to mitigate the puckering. I thought Castellano would/should pick up the cost, but they didn’t, and charged Kuhnhausen’s. Shelley graciously volunteered to absorb the cost. She’s delightful to work with on all levels! The owners of Kuhnhausen’s put the customer first. Shelley made several trips to my home to bring fabric samples and patiently waited while my inchoate thought processes evolved. There’s a reason Kuhnhausen’s has a five star rating by Unilocal reviewers!

I spent over a month trying to find a couch that felt like home to me. I wandered into this store just by coincidence not really expecying to find anything, when actually they had some of the nicest pieces I had seen yet. They were friendly and informative without being pushy. The prices were great for the quality. I chose a beautiful sectional by Biltwell with a lifetime warranty on the frame & cushions.(You even get to choose the upholstery material) I have had my couch now for a little over a month and I love it. It is comfy & chic. I love that I got a locally made piece & got to support a lovely family furniture store at the same time. I would recommend this as a must see store before buying any furniture. Thanks Neil & Shelley for all your help!

Shelley is a knowledgeable, friendly salesperson and we enjoyed working with her. She helped us pick out a lovely sofa and loveseat for our new home. We shopped around town, and we liked the vibe, prices and selection at Kuhnhausen’s. Also, the location is very convenient on East side. We liked that they carry Biltwell furniture which is made by craftsmen right here in Portland. Keep it local!

I recently purchased a couch from Kuhnhausen’s and could not be happier with the whole experience. I was looking for a mid century style sofa, but wanted something new, not vintage. When I walked into Kuhnhausen’s, Shelley greeted me, showed me few sofas, and I flipped through a gigantic book of fabric options for the couch I liked. No pressure whatsoever, and she was extremely patient and helpful when I had questions. She even let me take home a few swatches so I could see how the fabric would look at home. They included two throw pillows with the purchase, which were also made custom with fabric I chose. The couch was delivered(at no extra cost) well before the promised date. It looks and feels very well made, and the pillows are awesome quality too.(Made by Biltwell, here in Portland.) I had no idea that a beautiful, custom-built couch was in my price range!

We’ve shopped here for several items to furnish our condo. Have been very happy with items purchased so far: occasional tables, storage chest, lamps. We like their quality, selection, and no sales pressure approach. We always receive a warm welcome even when we tell them we’re just popping in to browse while on a morning walk, muddy shoes and all! Shelly and others are knowledgeable, friendly, and great with follow-through on orders. A local gem!

Looking for something that lasts in a recliner(the 1.5 yr old LaZBoys we have are so LaZMade we can’t use them anymore), I stumbled upon reviews here of Kuhnhausen’s, and it was also recommended to us by a local friend. I wasn’t disappointed. The place is easy to find, and chock full of good quality chairs. Joyce led us right to the chairs we ended up purchasing, a Sam Moore and a Bradington-Young, both US made. The leather BY Satchel in particular was a great find — it even has zippers on all the places you’d need ever to re-stuff. I’m hoping this is the last time we buy recliners for a few years, but I’ll be returning for my future needs. Thanks Joyce!

Locally made custom furniture at reasonable prices and good warranties. Wow. Step up from Ikea furniture for a little more money. We ordered a couch that is made in Portland, and they made it with the fabric and foam that we specified. Great to buy something local that is good quality and reasonably priced. Also, Shelly was great to work with, she showed us the options and stepped away and let us decide, zero pressure. I also see that they have wooden furniture that is made in the US, it looks like very good quality and again the prices are very good.

We had an absolutely great experience at Kuhnhausen’s. We were looking for a new sofa and decided on one from the Sam Moore line. Checking on availability in the NE Portland area, I found Kuhnhausen’s and two furniture stores on NE Broadway. The plan was to check out all three stores on a Saturday afternoon. The inside of this store is spacious and filled with beautiful furniture and accessories. After spending about 45 minutes with Shelley, we walked out with a pretty good idea of what we wanted and some fabric samples. We never bothered going to the other stores. Although they carried the Sam Moore line, Shelley was very enthusiastic about Biltwell, a Portland custom-made furniture company. About four days later, we went back in, made decisions about the sofa and pillow fabrics and put a down payment on the sofa. On the way out of the store, we decided to look at some recliners and couldn’t resist. One of the floor samples was delivered a few hours later. And seven weeks later we had a beautiful sofa, custom-made a little wider. Definitely worth the wait, which is what you’d expect for a special order. The customer service experience was excellent! Shelley spent as much time as we needed and we never felt rushed to make a decision. Checking before hand, I know the prices were competitive with the other stores on NE Broadway. Definitely would return and have recommended to friends already. Really like supporting local and family businesses like this one!!! Check it out!

Well, I am honestly not very shocked that no one has reviewed this place. I can’t say that I’ve ever seen anyone in there that had a Unilocal tattoo or spied anyone tweeting a picture of the ottoman they just bought. However, don’t let this dissuade you from a visit to Kuhnhausen’s. They are a staple here in Portland; a family run business that has been around since 1919. So I guess it is safe to say that they have been around before any of us. They started selling furniture back in the 40s, after years as an appliance store. They sell Quoizel lamps and Pulaski furniture along with many others; all very high quality stuff. All of their furniture will be delivered for free and they wrap anything that fits in your car with the upmost care. They are very reasonable about returns and you may even catch a «previously owned» model on their floor(if you’re lucky). More than that though, they are a great bunch of people. They’re happy to try and meet your economic needs as well as sit with you and thumb through books till you find what you need. I’ve never once felt rushed into buying, and they’ve always been careful to show me every option. Service like this only comes from a business that’s been around for almost 100 years. I can honestly say there isn’t any other place I’d rather buy my furniture. So, next time you are looking for something nice(aka not Ikea), don’t bother with the mall. Head over and check out their sales. You’ll not only be treated with respect, but you’ll be happy to know you are supporting a local business.
