I had a meeting nearby and had never eaten here before. I appreciated the clean, friendly spot with a few tables(and a television) since I had my baby in tow. Portions huge, and sandwiches only OK. I wouldn’t recommend stopping here when you can get better sandwiches elsewhere, I would rather spend $ 1 or $ 2 more for something smaller but more satisfying. Re: Below comment, it is a 2.5 star place, so I rounded down as I personally wouldn’t return. It wasn’t that anything was bad, per se, it just wasn’t great or memorable. Maybe for people who need a quick bite between office meetings, but definitely not a stop for someone who occasionally visits the area.

The Old Port Sandwich Shop is my go-to for a quick lunch. A no-frills spot that offers a great $ 5 lunch deal(sandwich, drink and small bag of chips). I’ve ordered the caesar chicken wrap and buffalo chicken sandwich. It’s not mind blowing but does the job. Don’t forget to use their buy 9 get 1 free stamp card!

Pretty standard sandwich shop. I had the beef bbq, which had too much sauce and was extraordinarily messy. Portion was large. Beef was dry. Giving it three stars because it’s not trying to be anything more. However, for the money you can do better.

I don’t get the bad reviews I see here… It’s a deli that makes simple but delicious sandwiches! I got a buffalo chicken wrap which was huge and super tasty! They have lots of flavored seltzer too which really makes me happy because sometimes it’s hard to find. The employee who took our order and made our food was friendly and very fast with prep. The prices aren’t that bad, pretty standard 7 – 10 bucks for a pretty sizable sandwich. If you’re looking for something quick and scrumptious and hangover ending come to this deli!

My boyfriend and I came in today for the first time and I have to say, I will be coming back for sure! I got the Turkey Club on wheat. Veggies were fresh and bread was soft and delicious. My boyfriend got the Dagwood and said it was really great! Staff was really friendly and helpful. I used the 10% off $ 10 or more and it was very quick and the employee loved it too! Very happy that I came in! Looking forward to another sandwich soon!

First and foremost the service here is exceptional. Pleasant(cheery even) and fast. The lovely woman that assisted me this morning was running the ship solo and she did it with grace, but the food/coffee left me wanting. On the plus side: When I checked in I got a 10% coupon on purchases of $ 10 or more, so I went crazy and got: a small coffee, a breakfast sandwich, a banana and a huge slice of homemade coffee cake and it all came to $ 8.14 or so. Not bad. The Breakfast sandwich(egg and cheese) was on a dry sesame bagel with a single slice of American(no cheese options) with an over hard egg. It was underwhelming at best, although affordable. The coffee was watery and flavorless(although the portions are very generous). If you’re looking for breakfast in the Old Port, skip the Sandwich Shop(but come back for lunch!).

A favorite place for lunch while at work. Very friendly staff and owner. Large range of selections. Nothing really new or trendy, but good solid classic sandwiches.

Visited Portland during the Memorial Day weekend. Stumbled upon Old Port Sandwich Shop by accident for breakfast. I had a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich on a sesame seed bagel. It was excellent! The person working who cooked and served my sandwich was very nice and helpful. I also had a small coffee and it was very good! The shop also had a nice variety of drinks to purchase«to go» which was nice to have before my cruise. I would come back to this restaurant for breakfast and to try lunch. Very pleased!

Just recently experimented by going to OPSS for lunch during mid-week. I’m not sure how I could give this place a 3-star rating compared to all of the other places around Portland. I feel a 2 star is justified… but are you really looking for a ¾/5 star in a Sandwich Shop? If you’re going for a sandwich/sub/hot sub this is definitely an option that should be thought about. The menu offers a little bit of everything and there shouldn’t be a problem finding anything on it. I went with the Corned Beef Reuben and was a little underwhelmed with the overall size. The cut of corned beef was great which i was very pleased by. My co-workers got the Almost Thanksgiving and the Chicken Bomb sub. They were all on squished bread and not very filling. 2-star rating based on the price, quantity and quality. Good menu options though if you’re with a picky eater.

I went in for the first time last week. I was always weary of this place because of the«feel» I get walking by. It looks cold and like it hasn’t been really decorated in several years. I went in because my friend’s hangover was unbearable and he «needed» a sandwich fast. When I got inside, it was a totally different vibe than what I got from the outside. It feels simple, not unloved. I was greeted by the super friendly owner and one staff member he had working. They both seemed to be very happy and having a good day. I love when that happens. We chatted for a while and they were totally fine with me making a few tweaks to the sandwiches I ordered. Also a big plus– I hate when some places act like you are doing them such an inconvenience by asking to switch a cheese. The owner stayed engaged with me during my whole visit. Food: fairly priced and delicious. Definitely somewhere I will go again.

We came in on a Saturday afternoon, last Saturday afternoon in-fact, around 2pm, just looking for a quick bite before getting a Christmas tree. First inspection of the place looked dirty, but sometimes the hole in the walls produce the best food. The service and staff however, were unacceptable. There were three people in the place when we came in, all sitting at the table in front of the door. There was a baby in a stroller and all her stuff in the window seat(best seat in the place). Two of the people, a young man and woman, got up from the table to take our order. She mentioned my boyfriend’s LL Bean coat and how«everyone had them» and the man said something about it being very«pretentious.» Insulting your customers, nice. Not sure why we decided to stay. We ordered a chicken caesar wrap and an eggplant parm. The woman prepared the food– which wasn’t half bad. Nothing special and also a little over-priced. Definitely not worth making the trip. Being a vegetarian, the menu was also underwhelming. From that point on, things got cringe-worthy. Another couple came in and ordered and sat at the table behind us. The three original people and baby(2 staff, another man) all resumed their positions sitting at the tables in the eating area. They put their dirty boots on the table, and the staff started making out and braiding each others hair. Then the male employee«lit up» an electronic cigarette, INTHEDININGAREA… THEEMPLOYEE. There was netflix playing loudly on the TV with swear words. The couple behind us mentioned it was distracting and inappropriate. I also heard that their order came out wrong, and she needed crackers for her soup. The staff continued to sit at the table and watch TV and make out. They could have been cleaning the disgusting place, respecting customers, and basically doing their jobs. I hope the owner of the restaurant sees this, knows who I am talking about, and fires them. Needless to say, I will not be going back, and will pass this story on to anyone who mentions Old Port Sandwich Shop.

Don’t bother stopping by here. Gave this shop three tries after having a bad experience, and it only got worse. It says they are open until 4PM, but expect a dirty look and rushed order if you come in any time after 1PM. They lock the doors and ignore customers who don’t understand why the door is locked. I was reluctant to go back a second time, and had a horrible experience. I walked in before 2PM and could immediately tell the staff were unhappy I was in there. Right after entering, they locked the door and I watched 5 or 6 customers try to get in. The employee who took my order handled the money and then made the sandwich without washing her hands or putting gloves on. They also became annoyed when I said that my order would be eaten in the shop. One gentlemen was trying to get in the door and was ignored. He was calling the shop, and I could hear the employees telling each other to ignore the calls. Finally, they let him in, and he had already ordered and was just trying to pick his sandwich up. The staff rudely dealt with the situation and the patron ended up walking out without his sandwich. I was very annoyed at this point. When I got my sandwich it was not the Italian Special I had ordered the previous day, but instead cheese on bread with one slice of salami. Not willing to pay for the bad service and under portioned meal, I asked for my money back. The employees cursed at me in front of me about me wanting my money back. I did get refunded. I let the owner know what a bad experience I had, and his excuse was that his staff were«overwhelmed.» However, all three times I was in shop I was either by myself or with one other patron. Plenty of small businesses in the area more worth supporting. Fit to Eat, Market Street Eats, and Mainely Wrap all a two minute walk down the road. Whether you are a local who works in the area or a tourist visiting Portland, don’t come here unless you want to be treated poorly. The food isn’t good enough to put up with bad treatment.

I went in today, and these guys made me quite possibly the most delicious reuben I have ever had. They do it right, and the staff couldn’t have been friendlier. I will definitely reccomend this spot to my co-workers who aren’t already in the know.

They do sell sandwiches. I’ve tried to like this place, but it’s just not good. My most recent experience involved being second in a two person line; we were the only customers. There were two staff members working. The staff member who served me was friendly, which is why they have any stars. I also do not think that they poisoned me. However. I wasn’t acknowledged in any way until the first customer’s sandwich was completely made and he had cashed out. It was approximately ten minutes before I was able to order. The sandwich was not worth waiting for. The vegetables were alternately anemic and canned, the sandwich wasn’t cut in half, and the bread was past its prime. When I have a bad experience at an eatery, I always try to go back at least twice before posting a negative review. This was my third severely underwhelming visit. I should have listened to the employees at a nearby office from which I was working when they said that it is best avoided.

DONOTEATHERE!!! My husband and I were headed out of Portland and we wanted to grab a quick bite to eat. The place seemed sketchy(dirty floors, tables not cleaned, holes in the ceiling,) but we figured how bad can it be, it’s surround by five star restaurants?! I ordered the turkey melt and my husband ordered the grilled chicken Caesar salad wrap. The turkey sandwich had no flavor, was made with cheap cold cut turkey that smelled like it was about to turn. I took three bites and threw this greasy, sloppy mess in the trash. The Caesar wrap was bone dry and he had to ask for more dressing. I mean how hard is it to mess up a wrap with chicken, lettuce and parmesan cheese? The best part was that the wrap was suggested by the staff…“it’s our best seller, most popular!” The bill was 21 dollars and even my coffee tasted like dirty water. We should have just stopped at MCDonald’s.

Sometimes a girl just craves salt. Sometimes a girl just wants deep fried, greasy goodness. Sometimes a girl just needs junk food, glorious junk food. And because of(all) that, the Old Port Sandwich Shoppe is a total guilty pleasure of mine, all because of their onion rings. They are some of the best onion rings in the entire city(if not state of Maine). I’m not a fan of onion rings with puffy, fried dough like coating where the onion slips out like a slimy eel. I prefer the crispy kind, and that’s exactly what OPSS serves. They’re crunchy, oniony, and taste like they’ve been kissed by the ocean air. They come in a brown paper bag that blooms with grease stains and they satisfy a very deep primal desire I can barely begin to describe(my mom’s reading this after all). Smothered in ketchup and accompanied by a Diet Coke? Once a month, please! I have never had anything else off their menu, because there’s really nothing else that’s all that appealing to me(I’m a vegetarian and their sandwich options for my type are underwhelming). So this review is literally JUST for their onion rings. Oh, and the British guy who works there(owns it?), too. I like his to-the-point, no-nonsense attitude(which is very stereotypically English and makes me miss my home abroad). If you’re looking for a treat… spend a fiver on a bag of onion rings and a soda, walk over to Tommy’s Park, sit back and enjoy!

I wandered around the Old Port for about an hour before deciding to try the Old Port Sandwich Shop. It’s reasonably inviting and there were already some people in there, so I gave it a shot. Naturally lunch is going to be the busiest time of day for a sandwich shop, and this place was busy. It seemed like someone was still learning something behind the counter but I walked in and was eating in about ten minutes. I don’t think I’ll get the Thai Chicken wrap next time because it may have been the messiest sandwich I’ve ever eaten(drippy sauce & tiny pieces of vegetables that kept falling out), but everything inside the wrap tasted fresh and I wouldn’t hesitate to go back. I’m giving it three stars because my experience was okay but to be honest, I think if I got something else this would easily be four stars. That’s okay, I’ll be back in Portland before long and I’m sure I’ll be eating here again.

On my recent 3 day getaway to Portland, this was my first meal in town. I parked in old port, spun around, saw the sandwich shop and made my way over for lunch. This was one of the best meals I had in Portland. It may just be a sandwich shop, but damn was it good. Friendly service, fair prices, and a good location. Simple food done right.
