Good place to find some top quality meats. Best pork sausage in town. Also love the pepper steaks! I stop in at least once a week to pick something up. Always nice staff and a clean looking shop.

Really great meats. Love the marinated pork ribs, pepper steak, honey hind quarters, hamburger, pepperoni sticks, and potato salad. We use to go to Gartners and Whites meats; which are also good. Not any more. The prices are good and the meat is excellent.

Super friendly staff, old school butcher shop your dad or grandfather went to. The tri tips are consistently money. They have a selection of sides (twice baked potatoes etc.) as well as sausages and some poultry. If your lazy they have assorted meats marinated and ready to throw on the grill.

This place is awesome! Great customer service. Only been once so far and got the the teriyaki pork chops… best I have ever had, great for the grill. Only downfall of this place is they don’t have much selection on marinated meat, so if that’s your jam plan ahead.

This is an old timey meat market that is rare these days. The quality of their raw meats is outstanding. I originally went there for their beef jerky. This is the real deal jerky, and without sulfites and other preservatives. Yum.
A comparison of Portland-​sourced jerkys — The jerky from Western Meat Market and the Original Steer Market are very different products. Both are outstanding products of outstanding quality and without sulfite preservatives. The Western Market jerky is thick cut and has a bit of moisture left in it. This makes it easier to chew. That extra mositure also means that the product must be refrigerated and frozen for longer term storage. The Original Market jerky is thin cut and completely dried out. It is therefore harder to chew and lasts longer without refrigeration. They are also different in their flavor preparation. The peppered jerky from Western is truely peppered … it is coated with ground black pepper and the hot peppered variety is the same but with added hot pepper flakes. The Western peppered varieties are simply too much for me, so I much prefer the teriyaki jerky from Western. The peppered jerky from Original does not use any ground black pepper. Instead, it is marinated in a solution containing hot pepper flakes only. This results in a jerky that has some kick, but also a lot of complex flavoring and a slightly sweet secondary flavor. The Western peppered jerky just overwhelms with ground pepper flavor. So my personal preferences are Western jerky for the teriyaki and Original jerky for the peppered flavor.

So glad we found this place! We have been looking for quality meat since we moved to Portland and have only really found it at New Seasons until we visited this meat market. It’s spacious and clean and they have SO many options. The counter guy was extremely friendly and we got two nice steaks, two chicken breasts, and a pig ear (for the pup) all for only $ 17! We will be back to get all of our meats from here because the selection is great and everything was very fairly priced. It was also cool to see all the butchers working in the background and a lady making the cabbage rolls, which I plan to try sometime.
The cashier heard that we were getting a pig ear for our pup (didn’t know people actually ate them…) and offered some over-​cooked jerky for $ 5 as a treat as well which I thought was really nice. Overall I’m glad we checked out this place and we will definitely be giving them more business in the future.

There aren’t too many butchers east of i205 – especially good ones and this place is not very good.
Their ribeye is terrible and the selection isn’t very broad, unless you’re willing to settle with frozen.
I guess Id buy chicken there but not much else.

Original Steer Market is a classic butchery with plenty of knowledge behind the counter. All their beef comes from Western, their chickens from Draper and their pork from Carlton. How much better can that get.
Compare their prices with butcher shops like Whites, Gartner’s and Barbur World Foods. Soon you will see that they are on a par or better in quality and price.
I was just in there today, special ordered all of my meats for Thanksgiving and I will be back to do that same thing at Christmas. I also picked up some pepperoni sticks, pepper bacon and some very nice looking stew meat that I am going to make Chili Verde with tomorrow.
I Salute you freaky tattooed, camo hat wearing dude, cuz you made my day and told me about some crazy specials that I will be sure to cash in on.

Well, I guess MAYBE I wouldn’t drive an hour to get here, but it’s in my hood, I WIN!
Before I knew this place, I HATED hot dogs. Didn’t care how fancy, couldn’t stand them. They have all beef hot dogs that are to die for here… seriously try ‘em!
Better than Gartner’s or Whites!

I love this place. It is an old fashion meat market. Great Quality and better prices than grocery stores. I only wish they had a take a number system as it gets confusing as to who is next when they are busy.

Such good meat! The teriyaki pork chops are incredible! The pepper bacon is so delicious. I could live on meat from this market. It is fantastic meat. High quality, reasonable prices, it is clean, and the staff will bend over backwards to help you. After saving us big $ on a huge dinner, They’ve got a customer for life!

Great place for fresh quality meat at a good price. It’s a great neighborhood resource.

Steer Market is a no nonsense butcher shop: fresh, delectable meat wrapped in butcher paper and sold at reasonable prices in a clean, white-​walled space. No frills, no attitude – if you want ostrich burgers or a game of twenty questions about how pampered the animals were on the farm, take that noise elsewhere. Their staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and more than happy to accommodate requests. Economically priced frozen packs are available in 10 – 30 pound bulks. The pork and poultry are locally sourced. They also offer a selection of prepared foods, including stuffed chicken breasts, teriyaki pork and chicken, stuffed peppers (personal favorite) and cabbage, and smoked steelhead (delicious). They sell whole legs of lamb around Easter. I cannot recommend the pepper bacon enough: thick, juicy, and crusted with chopped peppercorns.
Final note: unlike supermarket chains, these guys take pride in their product; not only is the meat much fresher, but there is NO pink slime or ammonia spray. Once I found this place, I could no longer buy meat at the grocery store.

I have been going here for the last 30 years and they have awesome customer service and great meat prices.
The quality of the meat is always fresh and beats the prices of other meat markets that I have tried.
It’s worth the drive no matter where you live.
All the meat is great from roasts to pepper steaks to chicken to ribs and meats for the holidays. I have tried them all.
The owner is an awesome person and always ready to help ya out for whatever your meat needs are.

I picked up a groupon here a couple years back and found that their service, food, and prices were all above average. My only complaint? Lack of organic options. I was super excited by the way all the employees seemed to be very in tune with each other. I was helped by three different people (the place was PACKED) and they all picked up where the former left off without a hiccup. Very smooth transaction in a chaotic environment. Well done. Wish I still lived close to this place.

Yes, I know bacon may have «jumped the shark», and that there is a supposed shortage of it, but that won’t stop me from making it a weekend breakfast staple in our home. Eggs, hash browns and bacon.
And the Lil’ Dictator loves it. Who could blame him?
Which is why I will continue to make the drive for what has to be some of the best bacon in Portland. Buy several pounds, stick it in the freezer.
Sure, I stick with New Seasons and Gartners for my other meat needs, but when it comes to bacon? Only the Original Steer Market will do. That’ll do, pig. That’ll do.

This is close to my house, and a great meat market. I’d say they’re neck and neck with White’s in Gresham, and definitely closer. Their meat is tasty, they have all kinds of fun stuffed meat and kabobs, as well as jerky.
They have Chinese BBQ Pork, which is like the stuff you buy sliced with sweet and sour and hot mustard. And this is the best I’ve had, very tasty.
Their staff is always super helpful and happy to answer any questions, and if you ask, they’ll write the cooking temp/​time on the paper meat package.
