I love this location. Friendly staff, clean restrooms, always good service. Get the Chai Latte and ask them to make it with all milk(no water), it is richer and faster to make! Extra hot on the cold days is even better!

We are long time residents of the Hawthorne District, and since this new Management has come into power, their régime has fixed an area that didn’t need fixing by profiling most any and all colorful characters who hung out over there. The joint looks and feels like a library, or an assembly line. Quite frankly, they could use a little color. But no, forget about that in that social engineering meat grinder. I got to give that new manager the raspberry. She patrols the perimeter like a totalitarian tinkerbell. And, if you show any variation from the flavor of boredom or narcotized indifference, she has her eye on you like the Mad Hatter and her dumpy little dour mice. What is most disturbing is a corporate clone operation like can not only serve bad coffee but 86 people out of there in an area of Portland, historically weird like she does. I am not a role model. I am, however a law abiding citizen and an individual and feel strongly that I don’t have to be something or someone I am not to please anyone, even a barista so they can feel comfortable around me. Especially when they don’t reciprocate. If I am a rogue for feeling this way then stick a fork in me. When I was playing street music, for those passersby’s outside this store whom I have enchanted and dare I say dazzled at this very spot for years, I asked for a water from a friend at one of the tables who was usurped by staff. It was hot and the sun was sweltering. Instead of him greeting me, with a glass of water, little miss sunshine, Millenial Manager, with all her education on art, music, physiology, history, etc, who now manages this store, insisted on bringing the water out to me. I could sense attitude, venom and ill will. If that was her way of saying hello, she compliance tested me beyond my limit. It felt she talked to me in a staccato, and it felt abrupt, cold, and condescending. What I do has at least as much value as what she does. I am a street musician on Hawthorne Blvd, not a piece of garbage. In this age of computers and isolation, a respite for what can only be termed social deconstruction and social disconnection. She barked at me how I was blocking the stores entrance. I was a safety hazard. She threatened to call the police on me like I was a criminal. I would say she was the criminal in this instance. Others weren’t happy about her commands either. There are two entrances on either side of the store. So, I’d have to be 15 feet wide to actually block them. Still, I shuffled over out of respect and in order to comply but then, maybe 10 minutes later, Little Miss Sunshine returns and insists that I must pick up my stuff and leave, that I couldn’t play any more on «her» sidewalk. Please correct me if I am wrong, but haven’t merchants and minstrals been coexisting, in a mutually beneficial symbiotic relationship for eons? I feel disheartened that diversity of expression with regards to artistic pursuits along with the art of conversation seems to have been reduced to hall of shame status, in what had previously been a living laboratory an open environment where we learned from others who have differing view points, and differing vantage points. The coffee shop has historically been a meeting place, where folks can go to network and connect with old friends and make new ones. When I walk into that Starbucks now, I feel a very unfriendly vibe. Like I am disturbing a funeral director. Besides, I wouldn’t want to disturb the Borg who came there with their eyes glued to their computer screens. It feels more like a conveyor belt of conformity rather than a public watering hole. I guess, Starbucks with all of their public service people, or at least the one’s I talked with on the phone, have«the» formula for success. This recipe seems to have made them a huge company and they are probably growing even larger. But, maybe the bread and butter of your business is people like me, who come in there to meet other people, and shake up the Jello mold just a little bit. I am surprised they haven’t instituted 20 minute time limits or membership cards yet. I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if this wasn’t on the drawing table over there.

Some say Coffee is Coffee… This is not true! I only goto Starbucks when i get me free birthday Coffee or I’m in need of a Coffee and there the only thing around. There Coffee is WAY overpriced for the premixed bitter swill they shove in Americas face. Ill be back. IF I HAVETO! Come on its Portland, you don’t have to try at all to find a good Joe;)

Such a nice quaint Starbucks. Staff very friendly and so professional! Make the best Americanos… always a place to sit, very quiet. Fresh goodies always abundant at counter. Great location on the trendy hip street(Hawthorne).

I don’t really think this place could get any better. The drinks are fine, but I think the thing that really makes this place shine is it’s afternoon/evening staff — I’m able to bring in a few people and just hang out and RELAX. This place really is one of my favorite places to be in Portland for this reason. I’m here about three times a month, and I’ve never had a bad experience.

When it comes to Starbucks, you know what you’re getting. The menus at each franchise are just about identical, but there are distinct differences that make some branches more favorable than others. This review is meant to reflect what makes this Starbucks unique more so than the company as a whole. My two-star«Meh, I’ve experienced better» rating should be read as «Meh, I’ve experienced better coffee shops within six blocks of this Starbucks.» You can literally walk in any direction for five minutes and you’ll find a better, locally owned coffee shop. Common Grounds six blocks East is amazing, Hazel Room four blocks West is great AND has awesome food, and straight North Solid Grounds and the Belmont Stumptown are both better options. There is a time and a place for Starbucks… Hawthorne Ave is not one of them. For frequent coffee drinkers, I do strongly recommend pursuing a Starbucks Gold Card if you do not already have one. By simply reloading and reusing a gift card, you can easily reach Gold status(which I think is worth it even under the new company rules). By doing so you get a free drink or food item after you’ve racked up 12 «gold stars»(items purchased).

The free Birthday Drink thing actually works! These guys are chill, as you would expect for being the Hawthorne Starbucks. They said it’s pretty rare that people come in with the Birthday drink, so I was happy I could participate. I think I ordered the largest, sugariest drink possible and was on a sugar high most of the day. I wish I had more to contribute to a review of Starbucks, but I can’t think of anything else at the moment.

So close to a much much better and local coffeeshop. Mediocre burny coffee. If you want dark roast, get a dark roast. If you want burned coffee or mehness, go to Starbucks.

I was freezing and happened to have a gift card. I ordered a drink to keep me warm, and I used their bathroom, which was not scary. All in all, I had a pretty good time. I was a little sketched out by a group of people loitering around outside, but they kept to themselves. So I guess it ended up being a good day after all.

Gave me a super gritty/groundy iced coffee. Returned it a few minutes later where they remade my drink and gave me a free drink coupon.

As I’ve written in another Starbucks review, considering they have locations all over this town, they really need to focus on customer service to stand out in my mind. The folks at this location are very friendly, engaging and seem to enjoy being at work.

Earliest place on Hawthorne to get coffee at 530am if you dont mind waiting in line with pajama pants wearin’ ladies. Friendly staff and was just remodeled. Check out the huge community board while your there.
