This place is awesome. Clean restroom and mellow vibe. The food is also good. I recommend the katsu bento

I ordered take out, on a very VERY slow Friday night. It came fairly quick, no big deal. Customer service was good. HOWEVER . My sushi(spicy yellow fin) was nothing near spicy, to the point that there wasn’t any spice at all. The only way the sushi was«fresh» was that it was quite possibly fresh out of the dumpster. The rice was all wrong(dry, and too firm). Veggies in my noodels? Probably frozen for six months. Noodles? Too soggy, under flavored, and the broth was also incredibly bland. The beef in my noodles tasted like rubber, and felt like it in my mouth too. It was so terrible to the point that the wasabi didn’t ever have enough flavor. The best part of the meal? The fortune cookie, and the hilarity that they were playing nickel back as I waited for my food. I should have took my nearly $ 30 and stuffed my face with pizza across the street.

They can’t tell the difference between tonkatsu sauce vs oyster sauce on my tonkatsu that’s not in a bento.

I had the chicken bento and was quite satisfied with it. Good flavor, and good quality ingredients. The outside of this place looks a little rough, but don’t be fooled, the food and staff are excellent. It’s also very reasonably priced!

Bad. Surreally bad. Do you ever go somewhere and think, «I could’ve done better than this at home»? No, me neither. But I did after going here! I got a shrimp and veggie«bento,» i.e. some rice with four shrimp, a disgusting sickly-sweet sauce, and four barely defrosted and unflavored broccoli florets. There was a lemon wedge on the plate which was the only thing that had flavor. No service to speak of. It was cheap. That’s about the only nice thing I can say. Yeesh.

There seems to be a lot of mixed reviews here but in my opinion, it was a very pleasurable experience. I only got the nigiri and in that just had three types. 1-Unagi 2-sake 3– Hamachi They were all really good and the sushi chef was super friendly and actually Japanese. I went at 1:15 on a Saturday and it was empty. So there was no wait and no hassle. All in all I enjoyed my experience and don’t see what those bad reviews were about.

I ask you, what is worse then wasting good stomach space on crap food when you’re in a culinary playground like Portland? Paying way too much for it! This place was easily the worst sushi I’ve ever had. No, let me rethink that: it’s the worse MEAL I can remember having right now. Halfway through my tempura roll, the thought that I might get food poisoning from this food crossed my mind. «Why was it so bad, Alice?» you may ask… Oh, let me count the ways: –the sashimi was so ragged it looked and felt like it was hacked to pieces with a butter knife. No, better make that a plastic knife. –the maguro was cut WITH the grain, making it impossible to bite through. I sent that shit back and the replacement she brought was STILL inedible. –the rolls were plain SLOPPY. Did I order some seaweed that fell out of bed into a pile of rice? No, I didn’t think so. –everything from the tamago to the saba was bland. As if it was frozen, thawed, Rinsed. Repeat. –the philly roll was ALL cream cheese and … what else was actually in there? This place as so bad that when the check came and the cleverly upselling waitress asked us if we wanted a box, we said«no way». We probably only ate about 2⁄3 of our $ 70 lunch. Our favorite things we had were the diet coke and Sapporo beer. If you do brave this establishment, be weary of the jedi mind tricking waitress who will try to sell you a million and one terrible menu items when all you want is soup. You’ve been warned. The only way this place could possibly be good is if I had an iron stomach and my tastebuds abandoned my face.

Everything I’ve had here has been great. The price is decent and the location is super convenient. It breaks my heart to see it empty so often. The service staff are always so positive and polite I wish more people would break away from the«popular spots» and give this place a try!

Great atmosphere and one block off of of bustling Hawthorne … a nice sushi oasis. The selection was good and the sushi was very tasty. Staff was attentive. I noticed thatthe place attracted regulars and that the sushi chef knew them by name. Something not likely to happen at the chain Mio down the street. Eat local!

Bento and Sushi roll. Bento was fine, plain but a good price. Don’t go here for sushi. But quick to go service and really nice service.

I can’t remember the last time of not being able to finish food because of taste in a restaurant. I am NOT a picky eater… and I couldn’t finish my curry at Toney’s bento last night.(And my husband couldn’t finish his sukiyaki, and I didn’t dare to make my kids finish the grilled chicken) We started our meal with miso, and the color was way darker than miso I’ve had else where. When I tasted it, it seemed like there was soy sauce in it. Strange. And then came our dragon roll. The rice was harder than usual, but it tasted fine(which is why I gave the restaurant two stars) Then the main courses came… I thought the other reviewers were exaggerating about the texture of the curry being like goupy gravy… well they were right! I’ve never had curry with such a strange texture… And strange ingredients too: green beans and broccoli? The tofu in the curry tasted like it’s two weeks old(I grew up in Asia, and know the taste of old tofu well – it was old. Not cured, not aged, just old). My husband’s sukiyaki was waaay too salty, and the meat tasted like tissue paper(old meat)? The kids shared a grilled chicken bento, and the chicken smelled raw. The color was right, but it smelled terrible… so I couldn’t be sure. I gave them a lot of rice, fearing that the chicken would make them sick(which it didn’t, thank goodness) We did have a super friendly waitress though, she was very sweet.

Everyone was Very Nice. The food is very bad though. By far the worst Japanese food I’ve had outside of a fast food chain.

This is my first time to do a review but I felt something needed to be said. I have eaten a lot of sushi in my lifetime but my experience here was a first. I love salmon nigiri and made an order, along with some eel, etc. When I bit into the salmon, a very large bone jabbed me in the mouth. I removed the bone and proceeded to eat the rest only to find another small bone. So, not only one but two bones in a small piece of salmon. Never heard of such a thing. Be careful or inspect your sushi before eating!

Worst place I have ever been to. Food was bland and not worth the price. I ordered the Shrimp and Veggie Udon with a side of 4 California rolls. I got the rolls and they were like the size of a dime. When my soup came out it looked good but I started eating it and found out it was chicken. When the waitress finally came back to ask how our food was(like 7 minutes later) I asked her if this was the wrong thing and she just didnt really say anything. She was unapologetic and when I asked if I could get the right thing she seemed inconvenienced and said it would take a while. When it came to paying she didnt offer a discount or anything and I was charged for what I ACTUALLY got and not what I ordered and it was more expensive. Worse costumer service ever. I would never return nor suggest it because of her. Ruined my night.

If you want local, homemade, delicious food then come here. This is one of my favorite spots for bentos, the atmosphere, the food and the staff is all great. When you come in you feel calm and it’s a private space where you can have a conversation and be heard. The place has great fresh food. Great prices, and incredible good. When something is good you’ve got to share and this is goodness that must be shared.

You can always depend on Toney Bento for no wait and sushi that’s pretty good. Toney is a local business owner who’s been here for 20 years and hasn’t changed his prices the entire time.

It’s alright for what it is. There’s definitely better out there but if you’re looking for something quick it’s good for that. Been here twice it was never crowded. Service was decent. Nothing really bad to say but the food is not anything spectacular. The fish was definitely fresh which is a plus.

went to pick up a late lunch and wanted some kind of bento. found this via Unilocal and thought i’d give it a go. The space is cute, the service was friendly and quick. The food was ok, nothing spectacular but no real gripes. The chicken was moist, the sauce was that goopey overly sweet stuff, pretty generic. But the rice was good. I’m not sure my $ 25 was well spent but if they have decent ramen I’ll probably come back for that.

Oh, please, it’s actually just fine, and quite good for the price! The sushi here compares well to the likes of Mio and Marinepolis and is often better. For these dirt cheap, «starving student» prices, it’s great(two curries and drinks for less than $ 20). The curry here is very home-style, mild, thick, available with choices of veggies, meats, and tofu and over white or brown rice, udon, or even ramen. It’s exactly like what okaasan would make at home. The ramen is supposed to be great and seemed very popular with the regulars, but I have not tried it myself… yet. Like most Japanese in Portland, there is a heavy Hawaiian influence and many of the staples you might seek are on the quite extensive menu here(yes, there is plenty of ahi and spam too) and the place is pretty reminiscent of an open, airy, beachside bento shop. It’s so nice to be able to round out a nice afternoon on Hawthorne with a visit to Waffle Window and then over here for a simple, cheap, and unpretentious dinner! C’mon in, they don’t bite.

Toney Bento, you surprised me. I didn’t know what quite to order but as another Unilocal reviewer remarked, the staff is friendly. The sushi was fresh and delicious and I really enjoyed their Tamago sushi. Went here on a whim w/family and I have to say I’d go again. GOOD for LUNCH or a snack while your out having drinks, ok!
