As someone who frequently travels in and out of Providence by train, I’ve passed by this unassuming Norwegian café and chocolate shop dozens of times without stopping in, probably because they close at relatively early at 5pm. Although my food and coffee were unremarkable, the atmosphere here is super cozy. The benches lined with colorful throw pillows are adorable and comfortable as can be. They also have a restroom, which is a major plus for me if I’m planning to hang out somewhere for a while. I had a latte and a slice of lemon pound cake, which came to about $ 8.50. The texture of the pound cake was good, but the lemon flavor was pretty muted. They offer a huge variety of baked goods, so maybe I just ordered the wrong thing. There’s a $ 7.50 credit card minimum, so bring some cash if you just want to grab a coffee. The employees here are extremely friendly and welcoming. I think the owner might work here, because everyone kept checking that customers were having a good experience, which I admire. I wouldn’t order to go from here, but I’ll definitely be back when I need a convenient place to sit and chat or do work. I want to come back and try their breakfast menu, which is served until 11am.

I come here often during my lunch breaks. It’s a cozy café with an eclectic style. They have awesome coffee drinks and sandwiches; highly recommend the smoked salmon egg salad sandwich. If you’re in a hurry, avoid coming here between 12 – 12:30 during the lunch rush.

Had breakfast here. Yogurt parfait with granola, bananas, blueberries — it’s the best I’ve had — the yogurt was very light. Also had a croissant with Nutella and bananas — the bananas were warm and it was delicious. Place is cute/homey and the staff is friendly.

Hovering between four and five stars. Why not five? Because I want to guard my fives. On the other hand, the curried chicken sandwich on fresh croissant was unusually good. Surroundings and staff very cheerful. Swipe right. Based on one visit.

Cozy little spot near Brown and RISD that’s perfect for a little coffee break. Spacious tables and wide seating arrangements make it ideal for studying too! They have a wide array of fresh baked goodies to help spot your brain some much needed glucose, just wish it didn’t cost me $ 5 for a coffee and a cookie.

Cute café near RISD and brown. Their swedish semlor is really tasty! It’s a cardamom pastry filled with cream. I think there’s something almond flavored in there too.

Pastries(cranberry scone, oatmeal cookie, tasca) tasted fresh, and delicious. The signature sandwich(Marie & Kate?) was a black bean with corn(not the best I’ve had, but not bad). Sandwiches are decently sized and served with chips. The highlight of the visit was the mulled apple cider — just right to warm up to.

This place is clearly better for dessert than for lunch. You can’t microwave chicken and put it on a sandwich, so gross. Thin slices, hard around the edges, off taste. Disgusting. I should have sent the sandwich back and got a refund. I ordered the chicken caprese. If you cannot do it right, don’t do it. They also would not do the pick a pair combo with that sandwich, despite there being nothing extraordinary about the way it is made compared to the other types. So I had to pay double the price to add on the Caesar salad I wanted. They charged me full price for a tiny baby Caesar salad, the same cost as a full size salad everywhere else. I will not be returning for lunch, but they do still have some good desserts. My usual almond pastry, brownie, and cappuccino were fine.

My first Unilocal review :-)! Stopped in for takeout breakfast and got the 2 egg and cheddar cheese sandwich with spinach and tomato on a croissant. All the ingredients were very fresh. Got an iced coffee as well. They have a station there to add milk and sugar as desired. Wish I could have melted my sugar as it doesn’t dissolve as well in iced coffee.(I’m picky which probably makes me perfect for Unilocal) Very chic spot, would have enjoyed staying and eating on the bench/couch area with the throw pillows. Didn’t get a chance to really observe the whole menu but did notice they had some vegetarian options. Would return if I was in the area again :-)

Being from out of town and needing a place to crash until I could check into my hotel, I was happy to find this place. How welcoming. What a great cozy café. I had a large hot cocoa(not the«Wicked») and it was lovely. The service was excellent. I camped out for a full two hours, complete with laptop and paperwork sprawled all over my table for 2. The staff didn’t bat an eyelash. I wish I had stopped by again before leaving town… the food I saw served looked amazing and the consumers seemed very pleased. See you next time for sure!

Great coffee places are usually not great food places. To find a place where both the hot drinks and the lunch are both over the top good is rare. Café Choklad is at one corner of College Hill at end of the Providence desert and at the beginning of Brown paradise. It is a fine gatepost. Of exceptional note — One of the best hot chili hot chocolates I have ever had. An insanely good veggie burger made of their own homemade mix and heavy on corn kernels with a very strong corn taste — (yeah they use mango salsa as a topping and mango salsa will make even cardboard taste good. but the base burger is first rate — and mango salsa is like having your back scratched in just the right place.) whether home made or subcontracted — they have a black and white cookie that is just fresher, tastier — and messier — then any black and white cookie i have ever had. The place is cute and on a corner with lots of light. So they can be forgiven for having the paintings of a certain sea-scapist all over the place — whom I presume used the Providence Mafia to make sure his paintings would be conspicuously displayed. (Better paintings by a different artist in the restroom. Check them out.) But sailboat pictures or no sailboat pictures A fine fine place. Wish my hometown had a place this good.

I’ve been a regular here for years and just realized I never wrote a review. Sorry Marie! I love this place and Marie, its owner. Fantastic, creative, high quality lunch food without fail. The best caesar salad in Providence. I also love the pâté, lingonberry and arugula sandwich; the Cuban, the veggie burger and the always interesting specials. The shrimp salad on croissant is very reminiscent of Sweden, which is a theme here. Marie and her husband have a long history in excellent food service and it shows in everything they do. We are lucky to have them.

I honestly cannot say enough about this place! Every single item that I have tried I nearly die of satisfaction from! I just finished the quinoa sandwich with goat cheese and fig jam on a brioche roll… I mean I can’t even tell you how I scarfed it! My husband ordered the soup special: Roasted red pepper and some kind of cheese soup… Goodness me it was AMAZING — I ate half! Oh and side note a «wicked» hot chocolate is the perfect side for any order this time of year!

Way above average fast café food. Highly recommended. Lovely corner space with great light. Mix of sweet and savory foods, interesting flavors like fig, plenty of caffeinated beverage options. Outdoor tables on N. Main St. ideal for people watching. Easily 5 stars if it wasn’t so close to downtown and tormented by the standoffish vibe of business people churning through for lunch and a complete lack of decent parking options. Food is great. Overall experience a little sterile. It will never be a personal favorite because of its location and lack the cozy vibe of neighborhood regulars. But I will delight in every business meeting that gets scheduled there and look forward to working my way through the menu.

Café Choklad made the first legitimate Americano I had in Providence, without any specific instructions. SO, obviously I’m a bit picky when it comes to espresso — having been a barista will do that to you. Choklad has never let me down with any of their espresso drinks, and I’ve indulged in quite a few. Their sandwiches are mostly wonderful — my favorite is their turkey bacon and avocado. The seafood chowder is also to die for. Oh, and the marble pound cake as well. Obviously I’ve been here quite a few times. They’re wonderful on a cold snowy day(huddle by the fireplace), on a hot and humid day(sit by the window and soak in the sun amidst beautiful AC), and every other day in between. I’ve been here to work for a couple hours, or to grab a sandwich to go — rarely do they leave me wanting. My only qualms: their limited hours and the credit card maximum(but this is usually no big deal as I am always willing to add a baked good to my order :)

I eat here for lunch at least once a week but often find myself returning for a coffee or dessert later in the day. Marie runs a great place here. We’ve also started using her to cater meetings since we are right around the corner. My favorite is the Cuban sandwich. It’s unusual with a tangy sauce that kicks it up a notch from the standard Cuban. The toffee cookie is the best although you can’t go wrong with the giant brownie or piece of cake. A tip: order ahead if you come between 12−1pm.
