I’m well aware that Don Murray’s closed a number of years ago, but I’d really like to pay homage to this eatery for its fried chicken — absolutely the best I’d ever enjoyed. Without a doubt, the skin and breading were perfectlly seasoned and cooked(read: crispy and flavorful), leaving the meat moist and juicy. (A footnote: Over more than 45 years, I’ve become a recreational fried chicken connoisseur. Here’s the story: When my parents started taking me to «grown-up» restaurants more than 45 years ago — places where kids sat in booths and chairs next to their parents and ate children’s-sized portions of adult dinners — I took a real liking to fried chicken, and have ordered it often as my «splurge» dinner at casual restaurants. So, yes, fried bird is indeed my favorite«tastes great but not great for you» entrée.) I’d love it if one of Don Murray’s former cooks could message me the recipe for this restaurant’s superb bird. Yes, it’s that good, making the egregiously hyped Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles( ) small, soggy and underseasoned fried chicken even more mediocre than it is.

Another old barbecue place that has gone out of business. I ate here several times, and it was clear that its best days were behind it.
