a lovely experience. well worth visiting. I saw an ad online and it was very helpful and low key, stating: «buying, selling, or restoring, — let us know if there is anything we can help you with» this kind of attitude carried over consistently from the first phone call to Grot that day, to when I left Grot with a check late that afternoon having sold my rocking chair to Gavin. I brought a very loved rocking chair that needed work, was a reluctant seller but it was necessary for me to do so… Gavin was very generous with his time,(realistically explaining to me the extensive work some of the caning on the piece required etc.) we negotiated a bit, but I always felt he was being honest and fair, asking me what MY expectation of how much I was looking to get for it, and if he was close or not to that he would tell me right away. It was great to deal with someone who has an obvious extensive knowledge and appreciation for this type of furniture, and it’s very clear, Gavin’s care and personal attention all the pieces in the store have benefited from… I will definitely be back! These are very good, to great pieces in the store, — this type of quality made furniture is not inexpensive, but the pieces i saw in the store are not overpriced,(go to WeHo where the markups are 200% higher) and I will be selling to and also buying from Gavin again.

Based on the positive reviews, I stopped by Grot today. The hours are clearly marked — 12 – 5, Open 7 days. Sadly they are not open on Monday at 1:30 pm. Therefore my review is based on business practices, not review of the merchandise or in-store experience.

Beautiful furniture but very pricey. There were a few items I would get if I was Rollin in dough.

There is wonderful mid-century at Grot, but what really makes this tiny shop Be All that It Can Be is Gavin the owner. About my recent consignment sale(Gavin sold a chair for me) + 1 Star — Knowledge. Gavin knew what my chair was — and was not — just by pictures I sent him via email. Cool. + 1 Star — Honesty. Gavin told me what he thought he could price the chair at and sell it. He then sold it and when he did, called me immediately. As in, that same day! And told me that since she paid in cash, he would pay my part in cash! Nice! About the store overall: + 1 Star — Small but nice. This is not IKEA. There is not something for every room that you need to fill, every time you are there. But you can call them and ask what’s new on the(wee) floor, and either Gavin the owner or other Gavin(I know, confusing) will help you. + 1 Star — Clean. I cannot tell you how much I despise a dusty musty vintage shop. This place is clean and tidy, in spite of being on busy, dirty PCH. Oh, that’s where the parking is, too, so be prepared to leap out of your car into oncoming traffic when you park! I know that I am a huge fan of these guys, and some folks might come to this tiny shop and be let down by not finding what they dream of, but it’s a well-pared selection and kind, honest folks working here. Oh yes, I shall return — to buy and not just sell.

Beautifully, creatively restored vintage/retro pieces. A set of dining chairs put out by PCH caught my eye and I’d been obsessing about them for weeks until I finally went in to buy them. The owner, Gavin, is super nice and offered to make tiny paint touch ups where they were needed. Awesome selection of one-of-a-kind stuff. Would gladly eat Ramen while blowing a paycheck on his stuff. :)

When Grot first opened(about 9 – 10 years ago) and the owner was living there on a futon in the back room, I think I dropped in at an «inopportune» moment. He appeared to be in the midst of «creative inspiration», as he was be-speckled with paint from head to foot, and holding a wet paint brush when he greeted me… the air pungent. Before I entered the tiny little shop, I liked the look of some of the stuff I saw through the window, but when I stepped in for closer examination and was overcome with that skunky-stench, I couldn’t look around for long. I have always hated the smell of marijuana. One of my oldest friends is a highly-strung professional in NYC, and I can’t stand to be in his apartment. He is a wake-n-baker, and the stale smell of mary j. abounds. Yech! Grot definitely had some cool stuff, reasonably priced, but I prefer if my retro 60s &70s furniture doesn’t smell freshly like the era from which it comes. Thus, I never purchased any~

I slammed on my brakes on PCH in rush hour when I passed the sight of sixties furniture on the sidewalk. The owner told me that was his plan… to draw attention to his shop filled with beautiful vintage pieces in perfect condition(some have been refinished & artfully refurbished). I am in love with everything.
