Firstly, someone went and created a new entry for this store when all it actually needed was to have the address updated. So all the old reviews are still over on that other entry. Hopefully Unilocal will fix this soon, and someone will be losing their«first to review» status because this shop isn’t new and other people have already reviewed it first. Last time I checked, there were a SLEW of reviews complaining about how expensive this shop is. Now they are all missing and its only been a couple of days, and no, they are not in the«hidden» review section. But I will address those reviews anyway as it is likely they’ll just be reposted once folk realize they’ve been actually totally removed. When you come in the new store, the first thing you will see is a long row of pulses — lentils, dal. These are marked with VERY high prices — because they are organic, thus costing 3x as much as the«regular» dal. And then NONE of the«regular» dal is marked at all. So it makes it look like there are crazy stupid high prices when that is probably not the case. In fact, very little is marked throughout the store. The shelves are loaded up, but nary a price to be seen for the vast majority of the stock. I am NOT going to be bothered to ask the price of every single thing I need to buy. So until they can be bothered to price their products, there’s really no point in even setting foot in the door. So — I’m guessing the prices here are not actually particularly high, but there’s no way for anyone to know that given they’re not pricing most of the stuff in the store. Thus — 3 stars only, until they stop fooling around with power tools in the back room and mark the freakin’ stock, LOL! And BTW — decades old hand-written faded lists for the price of rice and flour aren’t going to cut the mustard. Make new legible lists and print them out on a printer so we don’t have to guess what that squiggly thing that’s half faded out is supposed to be saying.

As much as I passionately love Indian food, I can say with full certainty that I have nowhere near the amount of skill or experience to whip up a successful, even passable, dish. Enter Spice Rack: hooking me up with the tools and renewed resolve necessary to make a KICKASS korma. Desi flavors have always drawn me in; bold and complex, South Asian cuisine is a guaranteed party in your mouth. Living up to its name, Spice Rack has an entire aisle dedicated to the many spices that make up some of my favorite eats. Coriander, cumin, and cloves! Oh my! I don’t think I’ve EVER seen a bigger sack of turmeric in my life. If this sea of spice is a little too overwhelming, there are also some pre-made mixes for biryanis and butter chicken for the less initiated. I never had the chance to stop by the original location on Vassar, so I can’t speak to any changes. But the Virginia St. location looks and feels new. Aisles are(neatly!) stocked to the brim. Small but fresh spread of produce; sizable selection of frozen dishes. My personal favorite section: SNACKAGE. If my Desi friends taught me anything in life, it’s how to chow down on chakli and shakkarpara. You’ll find plenty of both here! Feeling lost in label translation? Ask! The staff is friendly, helpful, and more than accommodating to any questions.
