Always searching for«the BBQ place». First meal here was good, nice quick affordable dinner for the family, will probably come back at lunch. Sauce was good and the slaw was nice and flavorful if it came out of a bucket it sure didn’t taste like it. Tried pulled pork sandwich and ribs, would definitely get the sandwich again.

Food was average. BBQ chicken was average and has a BBQ sauce that is watery and not so sweet. The place doesn’t offer Mac and Cheese or hush puppies… What kind of barbecue is this?

I am always open to try a BBQ Joint I haven’t been to. That’s what made me stop here at Alexander’s to try their BBQ firsthand. I was a little worried that at dinnertime(6pm) there were only 3 customers in the whole place and they. like me, were first timers looking over the menu to try something out. They asked me to go ahead and order so I did. Pork BBQ Sandwich with slaw and the house BBQ Sauce. Thats it. Oh how about a side of hush puppies? What, you don’t serve hush puppies? I’m used to all my NC Favorite BBQ Joints serving HP so I always ask, and if they don’t have them well that’s one strike against them. When the BBQ came out my first thoughts were… is this pulled pork from a big plastic tub you can buy at Sam’s Club? Or does Alexander’s actually smoke their Pork on site? It took at least half my sandwich to stop thinking about the answer. The BBQ was good, not great… but combined with a good slaw I actually thought after I finished that I could eat a second(i didn’t). The service was lacking. Two ladies at the register/kitchen but they would not take the tray with the order to the table. You have to go back to the register to get your food. When I asked them what kind of fries they served they actually opened the freezer and showed me the bag of frozen fries and said they are just regular fries! I said ok no thank you. As I left Alexander’s I saw two small smokers on a trailer behind the place. So I guess they do cook their meat on site. I doubt they do it daily.

Worst barbecue I’ve had since moving to RVA two years ago. The chicken and ribs both tasted freezer burned. It all went into the garbage. I can think of 5 other places that put this place to shame. Now I know…

This is a hidden bbq gem! The place is not fancy, but the food is so good! They have their own bbq sauce that is so delicious, and the best French fries in town! It has kind of a small bar attatched and a dining room. The staff is so friendly! I will be back!

Wow — that place was hot. I mean as in uncomfortable temperature hot. They had some floor mounted air conditioners, but it wasn’t beating the temperature in the room. They need to renegotiate their lease. I actually sweat my pork butt off. I had the chicken BBQ dinner. It turned into a lots of work little rewards. I should have stuck with beef or pork. The chicken was a bit lean and turned into a pile of bones. The cole slaw was kicking and actually raised my attention somewhat. Definitely would get that again. Baked beans are like pecan pie to me — I rarely meet one I don’t like. Well, this time I did. Like straight from can to plate. Nothing added. The server was nice and pleasant. I guess if we lived closer, I would give it another shot. At this point, it is a destination location for us to go again and there are SO many other places to try first.

The BBQ is average! I’m not saying its bad but it is just like the pre-made tub of BBQ you would get at Krogers. It is quiet and family friendly. I like to support small business so I’m not saying don’t go there but I grew up in the Carolinas and travel to Texas monthly and this place would be out of business there.

I love bbq so i am always seeking out the bbq joints. A friend of a friend told me to go here that they had the best bbq around. so im thinking okay better than Alamo? i have got to try this place. I ordered the bbq sandwich and was very disappointed. Not sure what their sauce is made of– it had a weird taste– ketchup? weird spice? i could not figure it out but couldn’t get over the taste. It totally took away from the bbq which would probably be really good. I also tried the corn dog nuggets– what a deal 8 for 2.99– these were tasty but you can’t really mess these up. the fries are below average– not much taste and cooked too long. i might try again because maybe i caught them on a bad day where the sauce wasn’t mad exactly right. the prices are very reasonable.

I just had lunch at Alexander’s and I have dropped by STARS down from a 4 to a 3. The service was great, however they are offering the Grill Cheese sandwich which they said is made to «Perfection». This tells me that it is an «ABOVE» average Grill Cheese which is one of my more favorite sandwiches. I asked if, I could get BBQ within the Grill Cheese and of course they do offer this. To say the least, I was disappointed… only later for the young girl to come and tell me that they can add it for an additional $ 2. more… I said no, as I felt it should have been done at the time of ordering… When the Grill Cheese came out, I was looking for something«ABOVE» average. It looked like it was two plain pieces of bread, with one slice of cheese melted between the two. Now if this is there ABOVE average Grill Cheese, it makes me wonder what they consider as AVERAGE. Because of this, I give them 3 stars on a Below Average Grill Cheese… I would not order this again, unless I have a small child with me… I posted my photos for your viewing…

A bit of a hidden gem, located all the way back of a shopping center off Patterson. This place is super small, and the line can get out the door at lunchtime, it’s that good… My biggest issue with this place is their sides, or lack thereof. No mac and cheese, no green beans, no hush puppies… a lot of the things you’d want with your BBQ sandwich are just not available. They do offer a side of mini corndogs, which could be a meal all by themselves… that’s what I got when I went there… I’d probably try Alexander’s again, but I may opt to do take-out so I can at least get some cornbread from Martin’s to go with my meal.
