Unilocalers, DO NOT GET YOUR HAIR BLEACHED HERE. My hair was way, way lighter than what I asked for and YELLOW. I hate yellow tones on my hair and was very specific about that. Also, despite having Olaplex (google it) my hair was crispy fried and falling out. $ 250 later, I look like a cheap version of Legolas from LOTR and I have never cried more. My skin-​color-​matching hair is completely ruined, I hope Bombshell can do something to fix it. It’s already short and will probably have to be cut again, which makes me want to cry even more. The manager was nice enough to apologize and give me a refund and the staff was apologetic, that’s the only reason this is a 2-​star review. Stay far, far away from this place unless you’re looking for a basic cut.

I was worried about finding a good salon when I moved here until my friends recommended Blackbird. Terry has saved my hair. Three months ago we cut off the damaged ombré I had. Then I grew my hair back after Terry informed me that my shampoo was breaking my hair. Today we did a super pretty mini balayage and I am sooo happy with it! She mixed up a beautiful shade of cinnamon and painted it on perfectly. They offer the Olaplex treatment and even if your stylist doesn’t try to sell it to you (they’re not pushy like that) you should get it! It prevents color damage, making your hair look soft and shiny. My hair looks healthier than ever =)

Laura gave me a really great hair cut today! She listened to what I wanted and styled it perfectly. The price was reasonable too, cheaper than the usual salon I go to, and the quality was equally great. Will definitely be back!

I love Blackbird Salon! I’ve been going there to see Amber for about a year. Every time I’m there the whole staff is inviting and friendly! I also like the products they use, nothing is ever harsh on my hair or scalp. The salon itself is conveniently located in the fan and has a comfy but stylish feel. They also play great music!
Amber is phenomenal! I’ve never had my hair colored until I started going to her and now I let her put in any color she thinks would look good. I’m always happy with whatever she has done (cut and color)! She’s easy to talk to and is extremely knowledgable about her profession. She knows how to answer almost all hair questions in a way that anyone could understand. I’ve also seen her do multiple kinds of cuts, colors, and styles and they always look great! Amber and Blackbird are fantastic!

I’ve grown up always having my hair cut by my aunts who work in an Asian salon in NOVA for free. I was nervous because I’ve never really had a real salon experience and this was my first time… and in Richmond, too! I came in for a ashy blonde Ombré and holy cow I am beyond satisfied with it. I really appreciated how Laura talked me through EVERYTHING before even touching my hair. I showed her a picture of what I wanted, and she gave me pointers and suggestions. She gave me her opinions on what would work with my face and skin tone, and together we decided how she was going to do color my hair. This was definitely different from my experience with my aunts cutting my hair — usually I’d show them a picture and they’d say, «Got it.» and proceed to chop off a lot more than I anticipated. Laura worked with my thick, Asian hair and took everything step by step. Neither of us were in a rush and it was very relaxing.
So, in the end, my total came out to $ 120 total (ombré is considered a full highlight [$ 100] + the glaze treatment that comes along with any bleach/​highlight treatment [$ 20]). I think this is a very reasonable and median price, I compared A LOT of RVA salons to Blackbird before going there.
Laura was fantastic and easy to talk to, all of the other ladies were so nice and welcoming, and the salon itself was very clean and cozy. I’m glad I made this my first salon experience, I highly recommend Blackbird salon to anyone (especially VCU students since it’s a 7 minute walk from campus) and I am definitely going to return.

I came to Richmond a little less than a year ago for school with hair all the way down my back. About six months ago, I attempted a DIY ombré at home with a box kit. It left the ends of my hair super dry and dead looking. I had been wanting to get a haircut to trim off the dead ends for months now, but was reluctant of going to a new hair salon. I looked up several salons in the area on Unilocal and found that this salon had great reviews so I booked an appointment with Terry. To say that she was fantastic would be an understatement. She asked me what I wanted before getting started and she completely understood what I wanted to go for. I explained to her that I wanted to get rid of my dead ends, but keep some length in my hair, and I also told her that I wanted a subtle ombré. She asked me thoroughly exactly what I wanted and when I did, she knew exactly what I meant and even agreed with my preferences. It was like we were completely in sync. She took great care of my hair and paid very close attention to detail, explaining each step along the way. I am ecstatic at the final product. Terry was also fun and easy to talk to, and the rest of the salon staff were very friendly. I would definitely recommend this salon.

I came in with bleach blonde, damaged hair and Terry turned it around! She took me step by step everything that needed to be done to take it to a brunette shade. When I winced at the pricing (by the way, the pricing is very fair — I’m just a broke college student going to a salon for the first time :), she was able to get another stylist to help her make the process go faster (because for coloring the price is by hour). It was really wonderful of her. She gave me recommendations for products, but knowing that I was on a budget, gave me some suggestions for at-​home conditioners to make! She also gave me a bang trim no charge. I loved the color, the price, how professional the stylists were, and beautiful the salon was. I will definitely be going back!

I’ve had friends who’ve gotten great haircuts from Blackbird so I was really looking forward to trying it out. The environment is comfortable and the people are friendly. I came in wanting to shorten the length on the sides and texture the top; my stylist took my length down gradually, which I appreciated, but I didn’t like the overall shape or lack of texture. I came back for a touch up, and though I only asked to shorten the sides just a little more and texture the top, I left with virtually no hair on the sides of my head. Furthermore, she used blunt cuts to trim the top! Perhaps the experience is different for girls, or maybe it was just my stylist, but I was thoroughly disappointed by the lack of attention to detail.

Autumn cut my hair and she did a phenomenal job! I came in with long hair down to my chest, and I definitely had some damage at the ends from a DIY ombré session at home. I came in to chop off all the dead ends, and go much shorter. I asked for the «Jennifer Anniston» long bob. I had some questions about what to do with my grown out side bangs so they didn’t look too funky, and Autumn knew exactly what to do. Not only does my hair look great, I actually really enjoyed chatting with Autumn as she did my hair– felt like talking to a friend, rather than a forced/​awkward convo which is how I’ve sometimes felt at other salons. My haircut was $ 40, and I tipped $ 10, only a tad pricier than I imagined, but for the cut, and the great service/​attention to detail, I think it was well deserved. Cool interior also with exposed brick– I dig it. If you’re anywhere near the fan, and need a high quality cut, I highly recommend the salon, and Autumn!

I’ve lived in Richmond for 5 years and never had my hair cut in Richmond. I’ve always been so nervous because like most girls my hair is a security blanket. After reading a few reviews and walking past Blackbird many times I decided to go in and give it a shot. I have never been more pleased! I have officially found my salon! Terry educated me on different shampoos and really helped give my hair the healthy cut it needed. She was very considerate of me wanting to keep the length, but also aware of the length needed to be taken off For a healthy clean cut. I am so happy with my hair! I will most defiantly be going back, and I won’t wait 8months for my next hair cut again! I highly recommend Blackbird Salon for the quality hair cut at a fantastic price. The place is clean and homey and all around fantastic!

I came in as a new customer for a bang trim and ended up staying to get a full haircut! Joel was my stylist and he did a great job! I will be coming back here for future haircuts.

This was my first time at Blackbird– Cathy, the owner cut my hair and was AWESOME. She is friendly, fast, and cut my hair perfectly. The whole place just gives off a really happy vibe, like everyone really enjoys working there. Is small, but gorgeous and it’s clear that everyone does an excellent job, as I couldn’t get an appointment until almost a week after I called. It was probably one of the best cuts I’ve ever had, and was only $ 38. They didn’t add any fees due to the length of my hair like some places do. I will definitely go back!

Best place to get your hair cut in Richmond! Cathy and her staff are all wonderful! Friendly, clean, professional. Cathy listens to what you want and makes it happen! Going to Blackbird is a real treat. Affordable treat that is!

As a dude, I usually don’t go for the Salon experience. However I decided to give Blackbird a shot and I must say I was not disappointed at all! I was able to get a haircut which I was very pleased with and have made it my some what regular place to come back (for my hair cut 3 times a year HA). Thats just me though, if I wanted to do it more often I would go there more often. That being said, Carly usually works with me on my cut to make sure it works with my schedule so the haircut remains manageable for a longer period of time!

This was the best haircut I’ve ever received. Affordable, friendly, and quick, Cathy (the owner) completely transformed my hair! I really enjoyed the time she was willing to put forth in making sure she completely understood what I wanted! Cathy eased me out of my comfort zone and encouraged me to get layers, which have already gotten me over 10 compliments since getting my haircut just 3 hours ago. PLUS upon leaving, I learned that they do complimentary bang touch-​ups/​trims for returning guests. Can’t wait to get my haircut again, although I found the process quite terrifying until today!

I loved Jessica Simpson! She helped me step out of my comfort zone and gave me a great cut and dip dyed my hair. I couldn’t be happier. She was fast, good and friendly. I highly recommend her.

This was my first time at any Richmond salon and I think they’ve found a repeat customer. Angi was my stylist and she did a phenomenal job taking my collarbone-​length hair and turning it into an «almost a pixie but with a little more length». I love that she took into account my hair’s texture and how much time I was willing to spend on a look before she even reached for the shears. I was also grateful that she was thoughtful about the cut and style, taking length off in stages, so I could decide when short was short enough. At no point did I feel like she was styling my hair just because she liked it that way (as some stylists will do).
Not only is my cut phenomenal, the prices here are so reasonable. $ 38 (cheaper if you happen to have bought a Living Social deal) compared to the $ 50+ I was paying at my old salon.
