Best chicken salad around. I can’t review anything else since that’s what I’ve been ordering here for 15+ years.

3.5 stars. I want start off by saying I would give their sausage and gravy a three star review and my server but the milkshake and food deliver were amazing so overall I would give them 3.5 stars. This was my first time and went on a whim. The food was fast and came out quick, almost to fast and generally it was decent not the best by far but decent. The initial server a middle aged man was pleasant and had a good humor about himself, the female waitress, red hair not as much, she was okay but seemed rushed, other than taking my order and giving me my drink I never saw her again, I order grits with my sausage gravy. I didn’t get a spoon but a fork and well I hadn’t seen her to ask for a spoon. It was a good place overall the other staff seemed possibly rushed as well except for the food delivers. But then I ordered the milkshake it is called the dairy bar, and at her suggestion the chocolate peanut butter was amazing. Can I say any place you can have a milkshake for breakfast must be a great place. (I’ve never done this but wanted to try) it was great. Amazing and wonderful overall.

My first visit but worked in the area 23yrs and never stop in. I ordered the double burger special w/​fries and drink but then I added cheese and bacon knowing the bacon would be extra. My $ 9.99 special end cost $ 13.00 wow, now I was expecting 1 Patty and not two as that makes for a messy burger every time. The burgers were not over cooked but they had no favor either as I don’t use salt on my food I did and plenty pepper. I will go back and try the Sailor next time.

New to RVA, so we had to try this local favorite. Who doesn’t love a pb choc milkshake served with their breakfast? It was so generously sized, we shared it between two people! Prices are reasonable and service is friendly here, kids are welcome. We came around 9 a.m. on a weekday and had no trouble parking on the street.

There are few places this consistent.
Best pancakes, milkshakes and west coast Reuben sandwich. Service is always friendly and courteous, especially when I bring both my boys here (ages 4 and 2). Very accommodating to add or change side dishes. We usually order scrambled eggs or cottage cheese.
Also we usually get the egg and cheese biscuit sandwich. Delic!
Milkshake flavor is peanut butter chocolate and banana. Bananas are real folks.
Highly recommend this place with kids or when family comes to visit. Owner is usually there to greet you and to make sure things run like clockwork.
Hats off to this venerable institution.

They are always nice and friendly when I walk in. The owner always recognizes me he may not know my name but he recognizes me and always asks how I’m doing. I could list why this place is so amazing but it would be too long of a review and I think you would probably lose interest. The food is really really good and the atmosphere is really really good and most of all The peanut butter chocolate banana milkshakes are the absolute greatest thing there. Just make sure that when you are coming out for a visit that you understand there are runners that come out here on a regular basis every weekend and we do try to sit outside but if we cannot sit outside we do apologize for the stink.

Just honest, unpretentious food. But very fresh, and well made. I eat their hamburger special pretty regularly, and it is the unsung hero of burgers in Richmond. My wife adores the Tuna melt. Fast friendly service, and the place is pretty clean.

First time I have tried this place. Burger was delicious! We also tried the milkshakes that were extremely good. Will go back!

Having this restaurant only a walk away is awesome. I’ve had breakfast and lunch to go and it’s always been delicious. Good portions and quick service. A little pricey but it’s convenient!

GREAT service– from the time I stepped in the door, I felt like a member of the family! Absolutely delicious! I had pancakes, corned beef hash, potatoes, and eggs. A ton of food at a decent price! Will be returning

My first trip to the Dairy Bar and very much enjoyed it! Was it the best meal ever? No, but we all enjoyed our lunch, portions were perfect and prices were spot on. Kids got shakes to go and they all said they were SO good. Thick and creamy. Service was perfect. Will be back for sure!

Lived here for awhile and never stopped by, it was amazing! Pricing is great and service was phenomenal!

Popped in to a spot that many Richmond folk know well, The Dairy Bar. I don’t get over this way for breakfast often but they do a great breakfast business.
My time is lunchtime! Check the social board at the front door. Today it was a half pound angus burger with their classic Crinkle Cut fries, and a beverage for 9.99.
That is all I needed to see…
This place has been here since 1946 I believe the cover of the menu stated! As I ordered I asked my server to bring my Milkshake after my meal as that will be my dessert. The Dairy Bar makes the best milkshake in RVA in my opinion.
This is the type of place that other guests/​diners will greet you and others even if you don’t know them. You usually get a friendly suggestion on the menu from the next table or booth as you look over the menu. The staff is friendly and on top of your service.
My burger was a double patty monster! Loved it!!! The Crinkle Cut Fries are the best Idaho offers. They’ve been serving the same classic French Fry for years and said they are so popular that they’ll will never change.

Stuck in a most unlikely location, you’d never find this place without a site like Unilocal — or a local — to point you there.
A few years ago I took my elderly Mother out to lunch and asked her where she wanted to go.
When she had no suggestions, I told her I wanted to try this place again I had been to with a friend a few years earlier. Describing the setting, she said «The Dairy Bar»? Turns out she used to come here, like 65 years ago.
The food is like your basic blue-​plate diner. What can you say about bacon and eggs, pancakes, club sandwiches or burgers that has not already been said?
It’s basic, quaint, reliable, inexpensive food served by cheerful wait staff.
And the best part is it’s one of a kind.

Went there for breakfast, was excited to try a new place and although I hear their milkshakes are great, we ended up just having breakfast. Both my BF and I had corned beef hash with eggs and a biscuit. He had grits as his side and I had home fries. The eggs were good I like my scrambled eggs dry so they suited me well. My BF said the grits were were good too. We both liked the biscuit and the butter that came with it was delicious. My only issue was with the corned beef hash. My BF had his come out just as described in the menu, nice and crispy. On my plate the corned beef was more oily and mushy. The service was great, everyone friendly. Because of the good service I’m thinking I would like to give them a second chance. will up date this review if I do.

This place in my books is sub par at best. The atmosphere is more family orientated than like friends or just a person. The food was good, but the amount not so much. I ordered a chicken melt with no onions. I got a chicken melt with ONIONS and freaking grilled chicken tender not even a breast on which they say on the menu. It was mostly cheese and onions on toasted bread.

This place has a fantastic homecooked assortment of delicious sandwiches, burgers, breakfast, and the best milkshakes in town! They always have the friendliest service, super fast, GREAT prices, patio or dine-​in seating
Only reason for 4 stars is the fact that their hours of operation are 7 – 3! I want them to open for dinner!!!

Nice little lunch establishment! My husband and I went for lunch and had a great experience. The service was friendly and attentive. The food was delicious and plentiful! I ordered the chicken salad sandwich and my husband had the Holy Cow sandwich. The chicken salad was perfect. Not a lot of mayo, the way I like my chicken salad. My hubby’s sandwich was a meat lover’s delight. LOTS of meat! We had fries and onion rings as a side. A great choice. We will definitely go back to Dairy Bar. Great experience!

Had ordered the eggs with corned beef hash, with an extra side of sausage gravy, which had nice big pieces of sausage not those lil crumbles you get in most places. We got the fried apples as a side and the home fries, really good… It all was fantastic! And it was a great price. I’m not into peanut butter, but my cousin had a peanut milkshake it was pretty good too.

After reading several reviews, I had to give it a shot and I was in that part of town.
Went in for a shake, but stayed for lunch, glad that I did.
The dairy bar definitely has a good diner feel to it, the menu and food simple and done well.
I had their daily soup special which was potato soup, comfort food for me. It was chunky with just a nice milk base and chunky potatoes. loved it.
Also had the grilled cheese with sautéed mushrooms, nothing fancy but I did enjoy it.
So, I did keep some room for a shake after all it’s the Dairy Bar. They use Blue Bell ice cream it was a little pricey at $ 4 but it was worth it, for just another .70 I should have got the larger size because I totally destroyed the shake in no time.
Next visit has to be for breakfast, I just missed it had ended at 10:30, I am confident that it will be just as good as the lunch menu.
