Isley Brewing Company

Another great brewery for RVA. A good beer selection with went with the choosy mother porter. Overall good experience the patio area is nice and a perfect spot to catch fireworks after a baseball game.

Richmond has a great selection of breweries and Isley is probably my favorite of them all! The space is huge, they have a large patio out back, and they host live music. The beer selection is amazing — I can drink the Blueberry Plain Jane all day long and the Choosy Mother is a favorite for a lot of my friends. They sometimes have food trucks on premise to order from but they don’t have any food options of their own. You are welcome to bring your own food in to enjoy — we’ve ordered pizza for delivery and on one occasion we even hosted a birthday potluck here. I love that they host a variety of events here: farmers market, terrarium workshop, art display, open mic night, pet photographer, and weekly trivia. Also, any place that allows me to bring my furry friend inside gets an A+ in my book!

Very average… Boring and overpriced. But, Richmond is an expensive brewery beer town.

We have been here several time and really enjoyed both the beer and atmosphere. Cozy and comfortable — a great place to hang out. (Love the peanut butter porter!)

We got to Isley as they were opening up on a Wednesday afternoon. It’s a great area to be in because we came straight from a Squirrels game and it’s not far at all from the stadium. Since we were the first ones in there we had the bar all to ourselves. The bartenders were really nice, they gave us suggestions but one in our group was a frequent visitor of the establishment so he had suggestions as well. My first beer was the Voodoo Lady which is a red imperial IPA. I enjoyed it a lot. My second beer, I can’t remember the name of it (All the beers have fun names), but it too was very good. I will definitely be returning. They have a frequent visitor program and other great incentives to get you to come back. They will also fill up any growler, not just one you get from them.
There wasn’t a lot of people in there the whole time we were there which is a shame because it is a good place to hang out. They have food options too (refrigerated prepackaged) but also the option to order from somewhere. They also have themed nights (karaōke, etc). They didn’t open that day until 4pm, I’m not sure if that’s everyday and they are open at least until 9pm.

The two stars are for the 2 beers I tried. The Hard Root beer is flavorful. The blueberry blond lives up to the name. The problem that I had was with the bartenders. There was no rhythm to bar tending, if you weren’t one of their personal friends you were overlooked or ignored. The male bartender, sorry I didn’t get his name, was better than the 2 females. Sorry, just telling the truth. If I’m being treated like this, I’ll go somewhere else

Ah I love this brewery! All the beers I had were delicious and packed with flavor. Great selection of craft beers but I will say that Choosey Mother Peanut Butter stout was delicious! Very light and on point! We got there right before closing but were the last ones to leave and allowed us to stay and finish our beers! Staff was very friendly!

Isley is quickly becoming my favorite brewery in Richmond, and that is tough to do since we have so many!
They have a great beer selection with tons of options and tons of variety. Unique flavors that you can’t find at other breweries in RVA and they all were delicious. When I got there, I was overwhelmed and wanted to try them all — so that is what I did! For $ 8 you can get a flight of 6 beers. I think I loved them all but one. My favorites were the Choosy Mother Peanut Butter Porter, Plain Jane Blueberry Belgian Ale, and the Root of All Evil Ginger Beer.
The space at Isley is great too, big open space with tons of table and chairs! They had a live band there Saturday night which was great and even though they were playing live music and it was busy, it wasn’t too loud I was still able to talk to the group of people I was with.
Great, friendly, knowledgeable staff who seemed to be handling the crowd (and my drunk friends) really well. I will definitely be back and I look forward to my next trip there!

The choosy mother peanut butter porter is the best beer on the face of the earth! If you love chocolate, vanilla, and peanut butter, you will love it! Also, both times I’ve been here they have had awesome bands and great food trucks outside! One of my favorite RVA breweries!

Isley is a mixed bag. On the one hand, some of the beers are absolutely worth a shot, like Choosy Mother and This Ain’t Kentucky. On the other, some are absolute trash, like Plain Jane and its blueberry cousin. The space is fine, nothing exciting, but is reasonably large and has a fair bit of seating. They have some snack food options, but you should just bring your own grub. Trivia night (with their particular host) is a waste of time. Overall, if you’re on a brewery tour of Richmond, it’s worth a look, but isn’t my top pick.

Awesome brewery with great beer. Lots of fun games, which makes for an interesting Saturday afternoon with friends (whoever tips the Jenga gets the next round). Isley has the Choosy Mother (peanut butter beer), which is the bomb. They also have their own root beer beer. They have music and do Yoga, who doesn’t want to get their drink on after a good stretch!

Do I love Isley Brewing Company or is it I love their Choosy Mother Peanut Butter Porter? Extremely tough call, so I’ll go with… both!
The first time I stopped by here on my way home from NC I naturally got one of their flights to sample a variety of their selections. It was during this afternoon sampling when I fell in love with the aforementioned above. It was actually one of the middle samples and I liked it so much, I saved it for the end after taking my first sip.
Then I bought a pint.
Then I bought a growler to take home.
Then I refilled the growler the next time I passed through Richmond… after buying a pint.
So, to say I thoroughly enjoy (ed) this particular delicious PB porter would be a huge understatement.
In addition, there is a large bar, plenty of tables, couches along the wall, and plenty of board games, large Jenga sets and television to keep everyone entertained while hanging out with friends or enjoying their brews. They don’t serve food, but they have a rotating food truck schedule, which is set-​up right outside the front door.
Traveling on I-​95 can always be a real pain, but now I have the perfect pit-​stop when traveling from or to home.

The atmosphere of Isley is fun and inviting, but really that’s where my good impressions with this place end. I’ve had their stouts and porters but nothing that I was ever really impressed with in comparison to other breweries I’ve tried in the area. The space is good for groups large or small though getting a beer can sometimes be a big wait when there’s an event going or it’s happy hour.

This was my first visit to Isley. I’ve had their beer at events and never been to impressed so I’m so glad that I finally made it to their tasting room. They have a large space with lots of tables and a bar area. It seems that Isley’s trivia night is very popular as they were getting busy after we got their in preparation for it.
We sat at the bar and were acknowledged quickly and the bartenders happily provided us with as many samples as we would like before we decided on what we wanted. I chose the choosy mother which was a darker beer and extremely delicious! I took home 2 bottles of the boozy mother since that version was 9%. My friend ordered a grapefruit beer that she enjoyed. I love breweries that don’t specialize in one type of beer but have something for everyone. Isley seems like a great brewery with great beers that will definitely be around past the craft beer trend days.

Tucked away in Scott’s Addition, Isley Brewing is an unassuming star of the Richmond brewery scene. Isley’s menu of approachable brews is perhaps the most delicious sounding one in town. From traditional IPAs and ales, to beers flavored with all sorts of goodness ranging from grapefruit to mint chocolate, you’ll want a flight so that you can try all of them! But my favorites, the ones you will definitely want in a pint or growler, are the Choosy Mother and Blueberry Plain Jane. The Choosy Mother is a PEANUT BUTTER (!!!) Porter that isn’t too heavy and goes down smooth. I’m normally not a dark beer fan but for peanut butter, I’ll try anything once, and then again, and again. It’s not your typical porter. The Blueberry Plain Jane is the type of beer I’d typically choose and it does not disappoint. A blueberry Belgian white ale, it’s fresh and light with a hint of blueberry — that’s not at all artificial tasting. Isley also just released a new hard root beer, aptly named Drunken Uncle, that I’m dying to try!
Isley’s modest tasting room is equipped with board games to liven up your happy hour, or break the awkwardness of a first date, and often features live music. Slip through the back and past the brewing tanks, and you’ll find a rear deck and «patio» (read: roped off section of the alley) where they have corn hole games and extra seating for nice days and sometimes you can also catch live music back there as well as a food truck or two.
It may not be Richmond’s biggest or most prominent brewery, but with a solid menu and welcoming atmosphere, Isley lets the beer speak for itself and cultivates a great experience for all.

Came here for a birthday surprise and first time at a brewery, will say I am impressed! The Plain Jane was definitely the best blueberry beer I’ve had and the Choosy Mother was a close 2^nd with a very rich peanut butter taste. The employees are very sociable and helpful when it comes to deciding on which beer to go with. I will definitely be back for more!

really cool, sociable, nice people working here, laid back, could sit here for hours drinking. Employees go out of their way to help and are easy to talk to. I think their niche is fruited beers because all their beers with fruit were solid. I think that’s the niche they should focus on. They really have that going for them.
Blueberry Plain Jane was the BEST blueberry beer I’ve ever had, and the ONLY blueberry beer that wasn’t artificial and it actually tasted like blueberry (muffins)! Not cloying, not too sweet, so drinkable, crisp, clean.
Their grapefruit ruby red slippers was also solid. its competitive with grapefruit sculpin and I’d need to do a side by side to verify which was better, but it would be close. Isley did better than Ballast Point in getting that red grapefruit taste without the hops crowding out flavors. They nailed the bitter/​sweet/​salty taste of red grapefruit. Super crisp and clean flavors. Not cloying or artificial, tasted pretty fresh! Definitely visiting again next time I’m in town.

I don’t think I have been to a local brewery around where I LOVED this many beers. The blueberry one is excellent and the Choosy Mother (Peanut Butter Porter) is amazing.
While there aren’t any real food options they do have complimentary chips or you can buy crackers and cheese. Both were a big hit with our crowd.
They also have quite a selection of games which I really appreciated.

I’ve been to Isley twice and really enjoyed myself. Both times I got their Summer Ale, The Amarillo Kid. Its hoppier than most summer ales, but I thought it was amazing (that said, I love IPAs, so that’s probably why). All my friends seem to love the ginger beer, but it isn’t really for me.
They have a great deck, though due to the location, the deck is in a back alleyway. But really, its still nice to be out there. And the inside is great and open with plenty of sitting and standing room, and games if you are interested. If you haven’t been, give it a try. Its in a great up and coming area of Scott’s Addition.
