Teeny tiny bakery. Glorious bread-y smells. Delicate consistency. No lard taste. If you like that, this is your place. I personally prefer the rich, authentic taste of lard. It is with this admission, lightening strikes me dead.

THE best sweet Mexican bread. The place is super super small and hidden. I tried every single one of their bread and I must say the drive was sooo worth it(Redlands to riverside).

I went to Chela’s based on an article highlighting Riverside City’s local business, and I wasn’t disappointed. Chela’s is a tiny bakery located in a modest latino neighborhood, where you know you are getting the authentic goodies. The article mentioned that the owner Chela worked at the Mission Inn Hotel & Spa for 11 years as a chef, then opened this family bakery. The most popular bread is the Tarasco, an indigenous bread from Michoacán. When I mentioned to the workers there, they weren’t not quite sure what it is, but they pointed out this brown, large squareish bread and suggested my friend and I to give it a try. We ended up buying: 1. Tarasco bread — great cinnamon flavor, very tasty, earthy, non-refined. 2. apple turnover — so yummy, the crust was excellent and the filling was great. 3. pineapple-filled empanada looking pastry — again the crust was great. But I am not excited about the filling, it has the bright yellow color you see in regular donut shop fillings. 4. plain croissant — slightly dry, but that butter smell and flavor was wonderful, you know you are getting the real stuff. Overall, I love it — the people are friendly, the ingredients are good, and no preservatives. Many latinos come here and buy TONS. For a big bag of goodies, we only paid $ 3. My ratings always take into consideration of taste, authenticity, quality, pricing and bonus point for non-big chain. Considering everything, it’s a 5 star! I will go back and try other goodies.
