Awesome! Absolutely as good as it gets. While visiting family in Roanoke, I always stay at a hotel so that no homicide charges are filed against me. Since my hotel was out by the mall, I checked for running paths and found the Lick Run Greenway. The entrance is right by Staples. You start in the parking lot and run over 581, then you are immediately in a wooded area by a stream. It’s fairly secluded but you’re not too far from major roads. The path takes you by schools and through parks and neighborhoods. You have to cross a few roads(10th St and Orange Avenue are the big ones) but most of the time you are on a right of way that is well paved and fairly open. There are a few hills: one at the start(from Staples), one after you go through Lick Run Park and then another as you approach Orange Avenue. The run from Orange Avenue into downtown is nice because you’re in the middle of the city but you’re running by a stream so it seems really peaceful. If you run up by the Hotel Roanoke and cross the pedestrian bridge over the train tracks, you can hook up with another trail that goes up to Mill Mountain. I ran from the trail head, around the Hotel Roanoke to the MLK Statue, then back by St. Andrews, returning to the path where it crosses Orange Avenue and that was a little over six miles. Terrific greenway. I love it.
