Roxbury YMCA

I bounce back and fourth between the Roxbury and Huntington Ave Y, both equally close to my apartment. While this one isn’t as new, large, or shiny, the staff are REALLY great and accommodating. Definitely a great affordable gym.

I love the staff!!! I have always been well taken care of when I visit or when I call to ask a question. I do agree with the other reviews that this Y is in dire need of a make over. I usually go when I want just a mini workout meaning when I want to work out for 45 minutes instead of 2 hours. The one thing I can’t stand is when people use the machines but they are also typing away on their cell phones! I guess that isn’t under the staffs control but still it is one of my gym pet peeves. Overall this gym is worth a try!

BEWARE. I came a few months ago to sign my 5 year old up for soccer. I specifically told the woman at the front desk that I am only signing up because they have a soccer program at a time that works for me. After I finished signing up, she told me that they may not have a spot open. She wasn’t sure because the coach wasn’t in that day. I asked her to hold my application if this was the case and give me a call when she finds out. She never called me but went ahead and charged me for a membership and for the class. I spoke to the «membership director» a dozen times and she always says she will take care of it and give me a call back which she never does.

Went in for a visit and a swim because I was closeby.
Men’s locker room is (as you might imagine) pretty old. Locker room is small and a little uncomfortable. Lockers and showers were all very dated.
But people were nice… I guess that’s what counts, right?
Very strange that this is one of the few Y’s where all the guys seems to shower with their underwear on. Not sure why… if it was the modesty of the neighborhood/​clientele, etc. I was worried that it was a rule of some sort and if I would be admonished for showering nude in a Y!

I’ve been coming here since January, and I absolutely love it. It’s only a 5 minute walk from my house, so it’s wicked convenient. I haven’t taken any classes yet, but I use the gym around 3 days a week. The best times to come/​expect no crowd on weekdays is when they open, the morning, afternoon, and right before they close. If you’re not into crowds and don’t want to wait to use the machines do not come between 5pm-​7pm. On weekends I like to come as soon as they open, and there’s never a large crowd. The service is awesome. Everyone from the front desk and beyond are wicked friendly; one time I was being spontaneous and wanted to try out a weight machine, turns out I was doing it wrong and one of the workers in the gym area taught me how to use it correctly. The only downsides that I can think of for this place is that the gym is small in comparison to other gyms, and sometimes there can be annoying little after school children in the gym area doing random things. So far I really enjoy coming here and burning off all the fat I gained in college.

This place has gone so down hill the treadmills don’t work properly can’t watch anything or listen to any music on my ipod seems people there are there to be seen and not work out the staff at the desk is friendly but the staff in the exercise room aren’t even certified just gym regulars who were hired I’ll stick to the hyde Park ymca now that’s a place run professionally

This place is really poor. The weights are old and rusted, and the tiny weight room is packed with steroid-​ridden gang hopefuls (I’m not racist, I’m being honest here). These hulks are rude, loud and inconsiderate, and the staff is friends with them so there’s no help from them. Some of the staff is also not the friendliest or the most professional, but it’s the YMCA and that’s not their goal.
It’s impossible to get a good workout in because there’s no room and no sharing with the people that frequent the weights. Try another gym, even another YMCA. You also won’t find parking in the parking lot.
1 star for the myriad of options for the price, and 1 star for the few times I was able to actually work out. I’ll be quitting immediately.

The YMCA here is okay. The staff is friendly and helpful. The equipment is in good condition but it is cramped in comparison to the Hyde park and Dorchester. I would recommend going there before 5:00 pm as the gym gets kinda «brotastic» and its hard to use the free weights despite that there is a weight room as well.

Professional, patient and quite fun. I have taken a couple of classes there (spin and water aerobics – don’t judge me) and have found them to be a nice workout. The facilities are well-​maintained, too.
Actually, I loved the water aerobics class instructor. He stays after the class and works with you on your swim technique if you need help. He knows his stuff. I think that’s so important – more folks, particularly ones of color, need to know how to swim. Kudos to him.
