I once had someone try the lomi lomi technique on my lower arms as part of a custom massage, and it felt so divine that I jumped at the chance for a full body lomi lomi massage with Joanna.
Background:
This is a traditional Hawaiian massage technique that was banned in Hawaii during the 1800s, after the arrival of Westerners who converted the locals to Christianity and considered traditional practices like lomi lomi too heathen. It was passed on secretly from generation to generation until open practice was finally permitted again, but even today locals consider it a closely guarded practice.
The good:
Joanna seriously gave me the best hand massage ever, finding points that I didn’t even realize needed a good rub. And she seemed to know exactly where my knots were on my upper back and shoulders, magically going right to them when she was ready to get down to business.
She is a firm believer in the healing power of lomi lomi, and it shows in her nurturing movements and opening sequence. My favorite thing about lomi lomi is the butterfly movements which apply just the right amount of pressure without lingering so that I don’t feel pain.
I had purchased a one hour Groupon, and after missing our first appointment, Joanna was nice enough to give me an extra half hour for my difficulties. Well worth it, and my hour and a half was over way too soon.
Good to know
Her new suite (#12) is the single door to the left of the double doors marked by the building address. You walk right into her office rather than into a hallway. When I was there, she was still waiting for her sign, so it took some sleuthing to find the right door, and was in the middle of painting her walls and mural.
Would I come back?
Yes, next time I’m in need of a healing lomi lomi massage, I know where to go.
