It looks good on Unilocal.Presentation was great on everything we ordered. Great selection of wine and spirits. Server explained the menu and specials for the day and it was so lengthy that I did not remember anything he said, but still impressive. Could he have just told us what the special was for the day without telling us the whole menu? It was uncomfortable. When we did get our food, presentation was great it was worth taking pics for many likes, but it lacked the flavor. It looked better than it tasted so for that I will Not be able to give more than 3 stars. I don’t think I’ll return because I know there are other places better for the same price if not, cheaper.

This is my favorite restaurant in all of Sacramento. All the food is to die for and the staff is fantastic. If you have a special occasion to go out for a nice dinner. Put moxie on your list to try if you haven’t been before. You’ll want to come back!!!

Amazing food in a unique environment. Service is outstanding. Seemed like there were 20 specials. Owner comes to every table to take orders, review specials and check on you. I’d fly from LA just to have dinner.

This place is a hidden gem… Don’t get fooled by the menu, the host/server had over 15 items that he just blurted out… I was quite impressed. They staff was so welcoming and attentive. After my friend and I had our appetizers, they took the silverware and replaced it. And we both thought«you know it was a fancy restaurant when they replace your silverware with clean ones.» The food was amazing. We had the portobello stuffed mushrooms. Apparently it was stuffed with smoke chicken… You couldn’t tell it was that great. I had the appetizer crab cakes for my dinner. Which was one of the better ones that I tasted that wasn’t near the ocean… And my friend had the halibut. I had a little taste and it melted in my mouth.

A cute little hole-in-the-wall place that my family went to for my parents’ anniversary. The owner/manager? comes to every table to welcome guests and read the specials. He’s funny but doesn’t linger. The waiters are sharp — as soon as my water was empty, our waiter came over and filled the glass. The food is good. Appetizers: I’d definitely go for the crab cakes. The mushroom and chicken appetizer was good, but a little too salty for my taste. Sauces with the crab cakes, the main courses, and the desserts were absolutely delicious. My mom’s arugula salad was simply fresh arugula and cheese shavings tossed with a lemon/oil dressing, but it was perfect in highlighting the freshness of the greens. For entrée, three of the six in my family ordered Chilean sea bass, which was very light and moist. I’d go back for that. The tomato bisque spooned over was very good too, and it was all presented nicely before I cleaned the plate. My mom ordered scallops, and she let me try one of the four. It was cooked just right, not too chewy. My grandmother was… very particular. Sturgeon with fried oysters was one of the specials, but she insisted on having only fried oysters. The owner, willing to please, brought out a plate of fried oysters as her entrée. They were fresh with a thick but light batter. We were all so full at this point, but we were there so my brother and I thought we might as well order dessert. Both were good — lemon chiffon cake was . Even though the food’s good, and the owner made the two desserts complimentary for the celebration, the bill was still very high and I’d only go back for special occasions. You pay for food that is fresh and delicious but not extraordinary, the welcoming, accommodating service, and the intimate atmosphere.

I’ve had Moxie’s in the back of my mind for many months and the other night we decided to go there for a special dinner. We dine out frequently and go to some of the top rated restaurants in the area, and I will tell you that we were very pleased with every aspect of the dining experience. Adam, the owner was our host and waiter — he and his small staff were very attentive of our needs. Each of us had a great entrée after our crab cake appetizer. Another plus is the bread is baked in-house. It’s a shame that the media food writers/critics don’t give Moxie’s the recognition they truly deserve.

This is hands down the best restaurant I’ve eaten at in Sacramento. The atmosphere, food, and service are all A+. I highly suggest it for a date night. Ask for Adam and let him plan out your meal for you. He was as enjoyable of a human to be around as about anyone I’ve ever met. I will definitely be back!

Loved this place! The husband and I went here for date night and had a great experience. Earlier in the day I called them and left a message asking for a reservation and the owner returned my call and booked a table for us. The staff was very attentive from the moment we walked in the door. The restaurant is small and dimly lit, making it romantic and cozy. Before our visit I was scoping out pictures other Unilocal reviewers had posted and had my eye on the sea bass with pineapple mango salsa but the picture was old and they weren’t serving it — when I told the owner(who took our order) he made it happen! I love the personal touches of actually giving a shit about your customers! That’s rare these days! My dish was fantastic. I tried my husbands steak and it melted in my mouth. If you like red wine get the Napa Valley Syrah — SO good! We also had the carrot cake for dessert and it was good.

Such a gem in midtown. If you haven’t been here, you must go! This amazing restaurant is right down the street from my house and you’d never know how incredible it is from the outside(unless you use Unilocal!Which obviously you do ;) The food is sophisticated and all ingredients are fresh and locally sourced(as a good sac restaurant should be). Adam the owner is incredible and runs this place like its his purpose on this earth. He takes such pride in this place that it really just shines! I’ve been many times and had many of their dishes. The specials change every night. The halibut is always great and the Brussel sprout caesar is incredible. Great for date night :)

4.9 This place is superb! The service was amazing, almost like having a personal waitor. did not wait for anything we wanted. went the day befor Valentines for our anniversary around 9pm and it was quiet and elegant. The apitizer my husband order was the crab cakes, omg amazing! The entrees were crusted salmon paired with prawns, not on the menu, and the veal which was cooked to perfection. Both were amazing and paired with great wines which was suggested by our waitor. The desserts were excellent beautiful presentation but quite as good as the food. Expensive, but less than we thought and well worth paying.

What a great hole in the wall restaurant in midtown! This place is literally a block away from a good friend’s house that I visit frequently but never noticed this was right by her house– their signage is minimal(it is actually a little hard to see at night). Anyway, great old place! It’s very dark inside with older décor(which they definitely pay homage to with the old black and white hollywood rat pack pictures on the walls). I thought the menu was limited until the server came over and told us about the specials. The specials are basically an entire additional menu there are so many! We had the crab cakes, portobello mushrooms and wrapped lobster for appetizers. The mushrooms were just phenomenal. The crab cakes were good and I don’t like lobster but my friends liked it. I got the seafood pasta for dinner and it was just huge. Very tasty with large pieces of salmon, crab and halibut. My friends got the salmon and swordfish respectively and all of us were very happy. The biggest detractor from this restaurant is the wine selection(or lack thereof). When the entrees range between $ 24-$ 38, you expect to get a nice wine selection to go with it. Here, the nicest bottle of cab on the menu was $ 44. I hadn’t heard of any of the wines served but the food served(and the price point) really demand nicer wines. Next time I go I will definitely bring my own wine.

What a wonderful fun and cozy restaurant. Service was excellent and very professional. Enjoyed the presentation by the owner him self about the specials, which also made it easy to decide on what to order. All our meals came promptly with beautiful plating. Not to mention how delicious everything was. Definitely a great experience! I just can’t believe I waited this long to make it here. We’ll be definitely back.

It was a cold Thursday evening and my significant other and I were trying to figure out where we should go for dinner in order to celebrate our 3 year anniversary. I wanted to find a low key restaurant that I could throw on a suit and tie, and we could have a romantic dinner date. Upon searching Unilocal,we discovered Moxie. Hidden(you literally have to keep your eyes peeled when looking for the building) on H street, we found Moxie. Upon entering the establishment we were warmly greeted by name(they prefer that you make a reservation) by the waiter. Shortly after being seated and provided with waters(the waiters ensure that you never go thirsty by constantly keeping your glass full) and bread, we were greeted by the owner. Being that I admire great customer service, I was tickled by the fact that the owner personally greets every customer. After greeting us, he provided a run-down of the special menu. Outside of the items listed on the traditional menu, there is a special menu that changes daily. Almost like how one would memorize the lyrics to their favorite song, the owner started reciting(without a cheat sheet) every item on the special menu. He was very personable and provided suggestions in regards to particular meals that would satisfy our appetites. 15 minutes after ordering, our meals came out hot and ready to be devoured. I chose the seafood medley that contained a variety of seafood items drenched in a creamy parmesan sauce. My meal was nothing short of superb! I would recommend Moxie to anyone looking for a nice, romantic environment to celebrate an anniversary, birthday, first date, or Valentine’s Day. Because it’s a romantic setting, one should exercise extreme caution when deciding who would be the lucky recipient of a dinner date. A buddy or a pre-meditated one-night stand(not that I know anything about these), may get the wrong idea if you bring them here… :) My significant other and I were equally impressed, we will be back!

If you’re looking for an intimate, romantic setting for an anniversary — this is the place to be! Moxie is so low key, small, and private that they don’t even have valet. You might even miss it since it’s tucked away in a quiet neighborhood. It’s not the kind of place to be «seen» — it’s the kind of place to disconnect from the world and reconnect with the person you’re with. Since the restaurant is small, the amount of staff is limited. I may have counted just 3 people out on the floor. I’m not sure how many were in the kitchen. There is a little bit of a wait, but nothing serious or to get upset about. It really enforces you to engage with your party. Don’t make plans immediately after dinner or anything — just take your time and enjoy the company, the setting, the food, and the whole experience. Not a great place for a large party. Just a handful(maybe 4 max). The menu — There is no menu online; which almost deterred me from wanting to come here. I like to get excited about food before I dine! Since I was so curious, I called and asked. All the menu items described sounded amazing, so we kept our reservation. When we arrived and looked at the menu, none of the items I called about were on there. Don’t worry!!! It’s all about the specials here! You can forgo ordering anything on the menu. Listen to all the specials instead and order from there!!! The food was amazing! For appetizers we had the crab cakes — sooo yummy! Our second course we had delicious Caesar salads. Our main course: My petite fillet was tender and melted in my mouth. The hub’s rib eye was delectable. I would have taken photos, but this is the kind of place with a mature crowd and I didn’t want to look like a rookie on a first date. This was our second wedding anniversary/13 year anniversary! For dessert we shared a crème Brule. I LOVED how every dish was beautifully plated and the service was very personable. I’d love to come back here again!

We visited Moxie early on a Thursday evening, when we were the first customers of the service.(It’s rather nice to enter and enjoy the place when you have it all to yourself!) It allowed ample time to look at all of the pictures and photos on the walls and inspect the collections of bottles behind the bar. This place is old school. Don’t be looking for a flat screen TV anywhere, for there is none. You and your dining companion will have to converse without the distraction of broadcast media. Moxie’s is not a spacious establishment. It is, however, an intimate one that suggests that you’ve walked into an intimate restaurant in NYC. The food prepared here will make you feel like you’ve hit the culinary jackpot and found a new«secret» venue to take friends and loved ones for a special meal. I will agree with others who’ve suggested paying attention to the many daily specials when deciding what entrée to order. With just a little deliberation after presented with the choices, we chose the crab cakes appetizer, the seared ahi tuna, and the mixed seafood pasta ribbons. We picked the 2013 Gregory Graham Chardonnay to accompany the meal. The basket of napkin-covered warm fresh bread came with a small dish of warm, soft butter. There’s nothing like the first crusty bite of bread. It presaged the meal that was to come. The crab cakes came golden and very hot. On the plate ere dots of a basil-based sauce and dots of a spicy mayo-pepper based sauce. Both accompanied the taste of the crusty, hot crab very well. A sip of the chardonnay put my taste buds into an ecstatic state.(It was ~so~ good.) We tried to eat slowly in order to savor the appetizer, but it proved to be too tempting, and we demolished it far too quickly. We had solace in the arrival of the seared ahi and seafood pasta entrees. Both were amazingly beautiful in their presentation.(Go see the photos that I’ve posted.) The freshness and the flavors were excellent. The quantities were generous. We enjoyed the food hugely. Memorably. Recommended for birthday and anniversary dinners.

I don’t think 5 stars is quite enough stars for Moxie! This is an unassuming fine dining restaurant in a neighborhood setting at 21st and H. In fact, if you weren’t looking for it, you might not even notice it. However that would be a major mistake! A dark, romantic, candle lit setting sets the ambiance. The menu looks small, maybe only six entrees, but thats only because they haven’t told you their specials, and trust me, theres about 15 of those! In fact, they’ll let you know you can really have anything you want — if they have the ingredients in the kitchen, they’ll make it! We settled on crab pot stickers with a sweet and sour chili sauce for appetizer(yummy), green salads(fresh and tasty), husband ordered the pork loin with mashed potatoes and vegetables(savory, delicious), and I ordered the baked halibut with potatoes and vegetables(outstanding). I’m unable to drink alcohol at the moment and terribly miss a good cocktail, but the waiter had the bartender whip up a non-alcoholic cocktail that quenched my craving! Total, plus tax and tip was $ 143. The real stand-out at Moxie is the customer service. The wait staff and owner? host? — well whoever he was, they all made us feel not only like we were regulars, but that we were VIP’s or something. But I noticed they were treating everyone around us like that, so clearly, this is just a special place. We quickly decided Moxie was«Our» new spot and we look forward to going back. Thank you, Moxie, for making our wedding anniversary night out extra amazing!

Moxie Seriously almost in a food coma as I write this!!! Lol we decided to go here for our 2nd anniversary and glad we did! Moxie is in a secluded neighborhood of downtown Sacramento. We actually drove by it twice not recognizing it is actually in a house layout. Parking was pretty easy. Lots of street parking as it is in a residential neighborhood! When you walk up there are two red doors and when you open them up and walk in you are transported into an intimate and romantic dining room with a small bar. The place is not very large but it has soooooo much character. There are old black and white photos from what I believe to be the 1920’s &1930’s hence the name Moxie! Adam one of or the owner greeted us immediately very warmly. Like we were regulars. So very charming! He seated us right away and then opened our bottle of wine that we brought with us and poured us a glass before getting us menus to look over. The corkage fee is $ 15 but worth it if you want to bring a favorite wine to have with their awesome food. The menu is very simple and is American cuisine. But it doesn’t do any justice to the specials that Adam can recite and make them sound so good! It was so hard to decide. I decided to order the crab cakes topped with an lemon aioli sauce for my app. My entrée was the Chilean sea bass on a bed of mashed potatoes and veggies! My boo got the Caesar salad and the jambalaya. When I say these dishes are works of art and taste out of this world that is an understatement. Every bite was amazing. We both talked about how this place will be a regular spot as we dined on our meal. The crab cakes and sea bass were cooked to perfection! And sooooo very flavorful. I just don’t know how they do it but I can see why they have been in business for so long and will be for a loooonnnggg time. Throughout the entire meal Adam came to check on us and see if we needed anything. My boo had his hat on the back of his chair and he took it and placed it in a better spot to make sure it was taken care of and not crushed. Every time our glasses were low he was there to pour us more wine. He chatted with us as if we had been coming there for years even as the restaurant became busier. Even after all that decadence we ordered desserts. I got the crème brûlée and carrot cake. Adam was so wonderful to bring out one of them with a candle for us since we are celebrating our anniversary. Another wonderful personal touch. These were absolutely delicious and I was really over the top and stuffed at this point. And you would think it was over but nope! Lol! Adam brought me a shot glass filled with warm chocolate. When I tell you heavenly way to end a meal it was. I seriously don’t know what magic they have going on in back of the kitchen but they seriously have Moxie and we plan on coming back as often as we can and trying EVERYTHING on there menu. Absolutely superb dining and food experience. I suggest anyone try this place out. You will not be disappointed!

My husband always likes to try new places, especially for our anniversary, and he heard some rave reviews of Moxie. We definitely wanted to give this place a try and made reservations for a Friday night. This place is tucked away. Blink for a second and you may miss it! The décor is of old Hollywood-esque, very dim lighting, romantic! Upon walking in, we were greeted immediately by what I believe was the owner. I had called to let them know we were running 10 minutes late, and amazingly once we got there he already knew it was us and called us by name! *IMPRESSIVE! We had a little one with us, and unfortunately they do not have high chairs, but they do have booster seats! He offered a booster for us and our drinks were immediately taken. The wait staff and owner make a great team to make sure that you are taken care of during the entire stay of your dinner, which I really appreciated. When we got the menus, I was little disappointed because there actually wasn’t much to choose from. My husband was little bummed too because he had heard all these great dish recommendations from coworkers, only to find they were not on the menu. However, the owner came over to inform us for the«specials», and that is when we were excited. I do not know how he memorizes all the appetizer/entrée/dessert«specials», cause it is a LOT. It’s actually quite overwhelming because since it’s all spoken, you can’t really remember it all yourself. I find myself wishing there was a «specials» menu that I could turn to in case I couldn’t make my mind up of something, but the owner does not mind going back if you need to. My husband and I decided to order the crab cakes for appetizer, I had the filet with mashed potatoes, and my husband ordered the rib eye. For dessert we had to get the crème brûlée. The crab cakes were pretty spot on. They have a special sauce atop and the crab cakes are definitely PLUMP! Packed with lots of goodness, I highly recommend this for anyone who loves crab cakes. My husband said his ribeye was on point, and my filet was quite tasty. Perfectly cooked, great pink center, melt in your mouth goodness. Crème Brûlée was perfect. Nice consistency of custard with the perfect crunchy shell. Overall the experience was great. The owner was perfectly professional and so sweet to my daughter. You can tell he’s been in business for a long time and I hope he continues to because he’s great at what he does, and the food is on point!
