Big Olaf

After dinner in Sag Harbor, Bestie & I treated ourselves to ice cream at Big Olaf. I had a very specific craving for Birthday Cake/​Funfetti — their ice cream version really hit the spot! The line is a bit long, but what can you expect on a Summer’s night in the Hamptons? I’ll definitely go back if I’m ever in the area again!

Honestly I’m not an ice-​cream connoisseur, but I found the ice cream too sweet for me.
The place is expensive.
I was here about five years ago, and they used to have a trivia question of the day on a blackboard, and if you got it right, you won a free ice cream cone. I got it right, and they did give me a free cone, but they didn’t have the questions up anymore at my last visit a few days ago.
Oh well, times change.

The ice cream was okay. There definitely isn’t anything special about this place at all. All I remember is that the person who was serving me was so rude and skimped on the toppings. Even when I called him out on it he still didn’t give me more. He was very unpleasant. I mean, for the $ 60 I spent on four ice creams, I should be given a decent amount of toppings. He sure didn’t think so. Basically, don’t waste your time– definitely go to Scoop Du Jour in East Hampton or if that drive is too much, go to Buddha Berry in Sag Harbor. You are definitely way better off.

I love the way this place looks from the outside: the ivy covered wall, the blue awnings that say, «Ice cream,» and «Frozen Yogurt» but what is inside wasn’t worth the money. I ordered a Kiddie size waffle cone of the Rocky Road ice cream. It tasted watery and lacked flavor. My husband had a small waffle cone with Mango sorbet, and it was «meh.» Our two cones were $ 6 each, and honestly not worth it. I wanted to give this local spot a try, but here’s the thing, along with the lackluster ice cream, was lack luster service. They need to step it up and encourage their employees to smile, be welcoming and friendly. Big Olaf, I wish you luck, but I will not be returning.

This is my favorite spot to stop when I’m out on the boat near Sag Harbor, I feel like I come here weekly. Today was my first team here all season but I must say I’m a little disappointed. I feel like they gave me half the serving I usually get and hope as the seasons goes on they up the amount of ice cream they give or it will be very continue to be disappointing.

First of all, it’s a completely wasted opportunity that this place doesn’t have Olaf from Frozen as its mascot. Okay, I understand that Disney would totally sue their asses, but they could at least draw him on a white board or something. Anyway, the line is huge but moves quickly. They let you try a few samples and they’ve got a few dozen different flavors, both classic and fun (like «superman», which is a mix of red, yellow and blue sorbets).
I really wanted dulce de leche but they didn’t have it. I instead went with the butter pecan in a mini waffle cone ($ 6) and it was plenty of ice cream. The waffle cone was fresh and crisp and the ice cream was delicious, but nothing out of this world. It’s also pretty expensive. Decent service.

I have been to many ice cream shops and this is one of the worst Ive ever been to.
The location would imply an upscale experience– right on the dock in Sag Harbor. The store was dingy, dirty and not updated at all.
The ice cream was just ok, the «freshly made» waffle cones were made maybe last week. The service was horrendous– the ice cream scoopers were surly and never cracked a smile!
I never understand why a service business hires the laziest, surliest teens? Are these relatives? Surely when you charge $ 17 for two medium ice creams you could hire someone who understands that ice cream is an experience, a special treat, a memory!
I don’t care how long they’ve been in business– take care of your customers!

What a great place! I was here last Sunday night and thought I had beat the weekend rush, but I was so wrong. That didn’t really matter, because this is a great shop and you don’t really feel like you’re out in the Hamptons (except when you see prices… then you realize).
I wanted to try the frozen yogurt, but went for the vanilla instead. It was some of the best vanilla ice cream I had ever tasted, and I like to consider myself a vanilla connoisseur.
Even though the ice cream was great, the service was somewhat subpar, especially for the prices you’re paying. First of all, there’s no standard line forming procedure. Instead of making good use of space by winding around, the line is apparently supposed to go straight out the door (a fire hazard.). There were also people who got there after I did, but were served first, which I didn’t quite understand.
Unfortunately, I did not get to try the waffle cone, but will if I am ever in the area in the future. Great ice cream, but they really need to step it up when it comes to service.

It’s a lovely location to stop, pick up an ice, find a bench and let time pass you by for a while.
We were the only customers in the store, but we felt a little rushed to buy rather than take time to sample or choose an ice cream. I felt as if I had inconvenienced my server. They were not rude, it was just their mannerism. After giving me a couple of teaspoon samples (of which my party of 4 had to share), the server walked away and I had to ask for help again when choosing. There weren’t any offers or suggestions coming from the server… actually, the conversation was pretty limited to our questions.
Sadly, although the servings were generous, I found the ice creams to be too sweet, lacking flavour and overpriced for what it is. The lemon sorbet needed more lemon, the rum and raisin needed rum (I couldn’t taste any). The pistachio was ok — creamy but not as good as what I’ve eaten elsewhere. The cherry was ok also.
If I were to go back to Sag Harbour, I’d probably check out what else is on offer elsewhere. 2.5 stars

Went here over the weekend. I had read all the reviews and decided I need to try the freshly made waffle cones because yolo. Glad I did because it was delicious. The prices seemed moderately expensive but you pay a premium for the location which I felt was all right in this case because they pulled through.
I got the mini waffle cone (which I recommend since its the normal cone size and you can save a dollar) with pistachio for $ 6. I loved seeing all the real pistachios in the ice cream and the flavor was great. I got single scoop and they give a pretty good sized serving. I was really happy with my ice cream. I can’t wait to go back and try more. I wonder if they make it themselves?
I also liked the location a lot. It was near the wharf kind of hidden away. I got my ice cream and then took it to the little windmill park nearby and sat on a bench overlooking the water. Super pretty and relaxing.
My only suggestion to them would be to organize the line a little more when it gets crowded but it wasn’t too bad when I was there.

I don’t remember what I got due to the day drinking but the waffle cone was delicious.

Big Olaf’s is harborside — in Sag Harbor next to The Dockhouse. I decided not to try their ice cream, which you think you smell before you even walk in the door. But in fact, what you’re smelling is freshly made waffle cones. They make them in house, right before your eyes. Now, I“m not usually one to say this — but OMG amazing!!!
For $ 1 you can get a waffle cone. Forget the ice cream, and just get the waffle cone by itself — trust me and take my advice. You won’t regret it.
On our way back to the boat (which was parked at the harbor — we decided to pay sag harbor a visit from the north fork lol), we even decided to go back and get seconds — it was THAT good!

Worth braving the long line! Tons of flavor options, amazing waffle cones and cute summery vibe. Our server was friendly about sampling flavors, and the line moved reasonably quickly. It was out the door, but we were done ordering and had cones in hand within five minutes of arriving.

Visited on our way to montauk. HUGE scoops for your bucks. tons of toppings and mixins.
Had to get the waffle cones, there were 3 or 4 types to chose from. OMG the smelI! *yum* interesting to watch them being made. Occupied the kids while we waited.
Im plain vanilla but added a ton of mixins. I think they have ever candy bar. you pay just like everything else out there but def worth it. kids had the soft serve. hubbie did a float. not a loser in the bunch. I saw some monster sundaes being made. and they looked gooey and delicious. i’ll have to return next day trip and maybe they’ll have the chocolate waffle cones!!!
Perfect end to a great lunch and a nice stopping point on the drive to «the end».

Very forgettable ice cream. It’s perfectly fine, just not noteworthy in flavor, texture or quality. When factoring in the sticker price ($ 17 for a single scoop in a waffle cone and a singe scoop in a cup with one topping– that’s probably why they’re cash only right? In an audit, who would believe you could charge that much for a single scoop of ice cream?) this does give you pause to consider the new Yummylicious froyo spot diagonally across the street.

Average ice cream in a gorgeous location, right on the water. Sitting on a bench and watching the sunset made the ice cream that much better.

Though there is a wide variety of flavors, I wouldn’t say the ice cream itself is all that exceptional. Addtionally, I found it to be a little too pricey particularly since the texture is a bit off (grainy). And you know how I love the ‘all cash’ deal, particularly when your ring could easily reach $ 20 at this place.
If you are looking for an anonymous cone on the wharf, this should do, but it doesn’t get a ringing endorsement from me.

I was planning on my first family trip to Long Island, and read about this place on Disney’s family travel website.
This ice cream shop serves wide variety of flavors and toppings. I tried Cake Batter and Moose Tracks (most popular one here) and loved both. There are benches outside the shop to enjoy your ice cream or you can take it to the beach by the windmill.
It feels so refreshing to have ice cream by the water with a great view!
Perfect for families to stop by.
