Big Stein’s Deli

This was my frist time trying them, I tried the skyscraper sandwich … Man it was well worth the price, and that potato salad was off the chain… Every one can’t make good potato salad that was … Like they pull out they grandma recipe and put they toes in it…(I could have just ate that). And the delivery guy was great also, I well be ordering again from them… VERY PLEASED,!!. Thanks

Okay, put review on Unilocal before for Big Steins, but got it today and was compelled to again as it has been the most consistent local sandwich shop for years! again we were blown away at how amazing it was!

Delish! I placed an order for delivery and they were at my door within the hour. It was pretty rainy that day so I can understand it taking a bit longer. I ordered the skyscraper club (which was enormous even for two people) and the chef salad (which is pretty much like the skyscraper without the bread). Both were fresh and fantastic! Delivery service was great and the lady who took my order over the phone was very nice. Try this place out!

The subs are excellent and the bread is absolutely amazing I’m not a big fan of anything New York style but the subs are excellent I will definitely make an exception for this place!!!

Great sandwiches and fantastic prices! Looks like a cafeteria when you walk in, but who cares?! You’re not there for date night. You’re there for their kick ass sandwiches! Eat up.

Awesome little gem here. I will be going back for sure CUBAN was on point! Gonna be hard to try other things on the menu. Pastrami sandwich looked good too. Gets pretty busy around lunch time. Definitely try this place out!

The food was amazing got a philly and a Cuban both great. The thing that killed me was how sanitary things were counter didn’t seem to be cleaned in ages and the person cutting meat with gloves went to count money for a guest the back to cutting with the same gloves.

When I walked in, I was unimpressed with the décor. I couldn’t believe my family had sent me to this place. Remember when you were little and learning to read, and Amelia Bedilia couldn’t do anything right? She was about to get fired and then her boss tasted her food?
The owner is like the honey badger, he makes bad-​ass sandwiches and doesn’t give a #&@+.

I’ve been to a lot of delis over the years, but this one is by far my favorite!
You can tell the place is owned by natives of New York and New Jersey, and the craftsmanship of the sandwiches really tells the story. The owners really know how to make a great sandwich, ESP when it comes to the triple deckers! I highly recommend you order the Wall St. It’s piled high with pastrami and corned beef with Russian dressing, and it’s hands down the most addictive sandwich I’ve had there. In fact, it may be the only thing I order when I come here! My jaw hurts when tackling this beast, but it’s so good, you’ll keep working through the pain!
Also, get the potato salad to go with it! You won’t regret it. All homemade and fresh to order.
This place tends to see a lot of action around lunch time, it’s best to call your order ahead of time if you’re in a rush!

Ordered the Broadway Sandwich and the Skyscraper Club. Sandwiches were very good and enormous. Almost too large to eat.

Delivery just arrived. What an amazing sandwich! I ordered the skyscraper club, chips, and potato salad. Delivered promptly, well priced, and large enough for 2 meals.
I’ll be a new regular!

After paddling at Weedon Island State Preserve, this was a nice close stop for a late lunch. Both the salads and sandwich we got were gigantic portions and the prices for everything was great. For 3 meals and 3 drinks, it came to around $ 27; not a bad deal if you ask me!
The Greek salad was awesome and came with a really good unique dressing. What was even more addictive is that potato salad! Just say yes to it with your Greek and you won’t be disappointed.
The Salad Salad my sister got looked really big and came with a massive scoop of tuna salad and some pasta salad on there as well. I snagged a bite of the tuna salad and was impressed with its flavor; I would easily try that next time I’m in the area.
It’s a small place and we were lucky to get a table in there since there are only a few tables in there for dine-​in. Food comes out quickly, which was great because we were starving after our kayak paddle. I’ll be back to try out some of their epic-​looking sandwiches!

This wasn’t my favorite deli, but I think it’s a pretty solid choice for a lunch. The sandwich was very generously sized, and the deli meats were pretty decent. The service was a little strange. They seem to try to juggle multiple customers at the same time. I would definitely eat here again if my friends wanted to go, but I’m not sure how often I would choose the come here.

What a nice, quiet place to just sit and relax. Sure, it’s dated in appearance but the employees were really nice and polite. Unfortunately they didn’t have tuna or chicken salad made when I came, but she welcomed me back tomorrow and said it would be there. I ordered a Greek salad. I guess that’s healthier than the tuna sub I wanted originally! It does not appear that they have wifi here but it’s a peaceful deli if you want to just come here and read or watch the news on their TV. Again, it’s not a very modern place so don’t expect a huge flat screen TV. They sell ice cream, chips, and a range of iced teas too by the way! I’m excited for this salad (also starving!). Enjoy xo!

Ridiculously good sandwiches made fresh locally and the owner is super cool. He is a sandwich artist and for the most part he makes ALL the subs in this place unless it gets slammed.
RECOMMENDATION: Braised beef sandwich or Meatball sandwich.
WARNING: They often sell out of the above two sandwiches.
NOTE: Closed Sundays and not open until 11am all other days.

For some reason of late, I’ve had a real hankering for chicken salad. This craving has been so strong that I’ve started pestering the «Duke» of chicken salad (maybe even the Baron) Todd W. for his favorite spots for this heavenly delight.
To my joy, one of his favorites is here in the 727 on 4^th St N in St Petersburg. Big Stein’s Deli. I must admit that I’ve driven by this place many times over the years, not knowing what I was missing.
Upon entering the small Deli you are greeted by a friendly woman who walks you through their menu, and what a menu it is! Half size, full size, sandwiches. Wraps, salads, and Stein’s Monster Triple decker’s!
I chose a full size Chicken salad with lettuce and tomato, on marble swirl bread. $ 5.75.Well, the flavor of this chicken salad was perfect with the tomato and lettuce, a little peppery. It was great.
While I was sitting eating my sandwich at one of the three small tables, I noticed how busy Stein’s can get. People coming in to pick up their to-​go orders and the phone ringing off the hook for delivery orders, They deliver with a $ 10.00 min order. You can tell that most of their business is take-​out.
I can honestly say if I lived anywhere near Stein’s it would become a regular stop for me. But, for now it’ll be a special treat when I’m in that area. Thanks Todd!

Ordered pretty close to closing time, they had the chairs up on the tables. I ordered the Philly cheese sandwich & my bride ordered a wrap. Got them pretty quick. They did put a couple of chairs off of a table for us. My wife’s wrap was big & she said it was very good. But my philly cheese was good but lots of bread hardly any meat at all. The meat was very thin, on one end of the sandwich was 2″ without any meat & the other end probably 3″ without any meat. U can see the pic I took not much there. It had good flavor but not enough meat in it. The bread was dry without any meat.
The Bathroom Was NOT Very clean. My wife would go back, but I wouldnt, so that means she isn’t going back either because I usually do the driving.

Well I’m extremely disappointed, this place is messy, chaotic and the layout needs serious work. Crumbs all over the floors and tables. Dead insect in the restroom, awkward wilted food in glass coolers for the world to see. Only 3 tables and a bar in this whole place. Its beyond me why there were so many people there, maybe they know a menu item that i don’t. I returned my Brooklyn blast that was tough and really had nothing special to it. Bread wasn’t toasted or anything even though I ordered it hot.
I got my refund but don’t particularly care for the comments about how you have to order it with what you want. I don’t think it should be that hard, you have a recipe with toppings, sauce, etc and if someone wants something different they ask to change it. Why are some menu items complete sandwiches and others not, seems silly.
The Turkey ruben was good had sauce sauerkraut, etc, thats a sandwich that is acceptable. The ruben meat was much more tender and the sandwich bread toasted.
The broccoli cheddar soup was gross, bland, flavorless, like thick water. There were burned pieces from the bottom of the soup crock in the soup.
A Lot of room for improvement here.
Come On Unilocalers I should have had a heads up on all of this before coming it makes no sense that some of you are rating 5 stars and others 2 – 3. Are your reviews paid for?

This place has one of the best hot pressed Cuban sandwiches in the Tampa Bay area.
Quality meat, large portions, and great prices!

Stein? How was your chicken salad even better on this latest visit.
I didn’t think that was possible.
Thank goodness Stein not only stays open until 6pm on Saturdays (I popped in around 535pm), but the man himself put together my salad of salads while keeping an eye on the Rays game and catching up with me on everything else going on.
Oh, my salad was the delicious chicken salad and a huge portion of pasta salad on an actual salad of lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions with a couple peppers thrown in there for good measure complimented by plenty of tangy sundried tomato dressing.
I was insanely hungry, and almost ordered a half sandwich to go with it, but this particular salad was so jam packed with good stuff I did not need anything else.
And, on my way out as his final customer of the week, Stein let me peel off the window sticker that a former FM sportsradio station asked him to display a couple years ago. The sticker was one of many pathetically bad attempts to connect with an audience and, only appropriate that I got to remove it. Why? Well, I have intimate knowledge of that mess of a station and some of the horrendous decisions made there both by New York management and a former Bucs defensive lineman who should never appear on any radio or TV show.
