I’ve been going to Jade Palace for over 20 years. They are consistently good. Their egg drop soup is some of the best in town and it’s the perfect remedy on a cold and rainy day. Their lunch specials are always hot and fresh and service is warm and friendly. My favorites are the sesame chicken and the lemon chicken.

Stopped in based on the other favorable recommendations. 3 different dinners ordered, none of them noteworthy flavor.

Just had the lemon chicken lunch plate it was good sometimes when you go eat Chinese somethings are good somethings not but here the rice, egg rolls, rangoons and the soup are all good that’s why I’ll be back for other entrees

We ate dinner here last night and I think that we have found our go-to Chinese place! We stepped inside and noticed the old-school Chinese chandaliers, and other décor. It was like the Chinese restaurants that my grandfather used to take me to as a kid so big points for nostalgia. We were warmly greeted and seated promptly and the jasmine tea that our waitress brought us was wonderful. This is indeed a family-run operation and I like that. The whole family was there. Mom was waiting on us. Dad was in the kitchen and granddad was also back and fourth from the front to back of house. The kiddoes were also there tryingtheir best to stay out of their parents’ way. I ordered the General Tso’s dinner combo which came with an eggroll, rice and a soup. I of course chose hot sour soup. Their hot sour is the best I’ve had in town so far, Nice spice, it actually had some sourness to it andit was the perfect consistency. My Gen chicken was also quite good. The sauce that coated thechicken chunks was a rich sauce that was unlike any other Tso’s sauce I’ve had before. It was delightful. Mywife ordered the mu-shu pork. If General Tso’s is my bellwether Chinese dish then mu-shu pork is hers. they make a wonderful mu-shu. Tasty and complex in flavor. The prices were damn good too. I’ll definitely be back. As a disclaimer, if you are one of those jokers that complains about Americanized Chinese then Jade Palace isn’t your cup of tea. Though it is way better than any Chinese fast food place. It won’t be authentic enough for you silly-assed hipsters out there. Which I think is a laugh because I’d like to see just how many of those that piss and moan about Americanized Chinese restaurants would actually be able to handle dining in China proper. But if good food andgood value trump your pretentiousness then give it a shot. I know I will again.

There are a few reasons I dine at Jade Palace. 1. Lunch ranges from $ 6-$ 9. It will be hot, fresh and quick. 2. The staff will treat you like a proper family member feeding a starving guest. 3. Most will find it unprofessional, but I find restaurants with employees children in the background means family friendly. To me it adds an extra flare of familiarity. I mean how often will the staff take the time to allow your child to feed the pond fish? That’s just adorable. And they have a pond WITHFISH! That’s awesome! I’ve been coming here for years and that’s enough for me.

If you live or work close-by, and you just want the standard Americanized Chinese restaurant fare, then Jade Palace is for you. However, I wouldn’t go out of my way for it, because there is nothing on the menu distinguishing Jade Palace from a host of other Americanized Chinese restaurants in San Antonio. We had Kung Pao Shrimp, Shrimp w/Vegetables and Beef with Mushrooms. They were OK, although the Kung Pao shrimp had way too much celery and way too little heat. Hot and Sour soup was a bit thin, although the Egg Drop soup had a good fresh egg flavor and texture. Service was fine, and the food came quickly. Frustratingly, the shrimp that we had were perfectly cooked. I say frustrating because the shrimp were trapped in the same boring treatments that you can get at any other«Chinese» restaurant. I think, given the chance, the chef would prove much better than the menu. I suppose that the owners have to make a business decision about what they will be able to sell to the San Antonio palate. I just wish that in 2011, there were some more adventurous selections on the menu. Take a look at Sichuan Cuisine, Kim Wah BBQ, Golden Wok or Phoenix Chinese for the best of an admittedly small selection of Chinese restaurants in San Antonio that make an effort at delivering something besides the standard protein+veg/egg roll/fried rice combo plate. A generous three stars(more like 2 ½) for price, quantity and the shrimp.
