I tried this for the first time today. I was very disappointed. Like, I’ve had a Unilocal account for a while now and this is my first review. I was so disappointed, I felt the need to write this review. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but it just didn’t taste right. I ordered the BBQ Chicken, which comes with rice, salad, and macaroni salad. The«salad» was just shredded lettuce with a packet of ranch dressing. Most Hawaiian BBQ(or Japanese) places would give you mixed vegetables. I would have preferred that. The macaroni salad was gross. It wasn’t even macaroni salad. It was mush. I don’t know if it was overcooked or what, but the noodles had dissolved into mush and the mayonnaise… I just don’t know what went wrong. And it was warm. If you’re in the Tanforan food court, eat somewhere else. If you’re looking for Hawaiian BBQ, go to Serramonte. Hawaiian King is so much better.

I got the bbq plate. theres not much effort put into the food. salad = just lettuce macaroni salad = just macaroni with sauce(thats it) bbq beef and chicken = taste is ok, but its not even chopped up well. so… go to L&L to get something way better. BUT… this place is decent considering its in the mall and its about $ 2LESS than L&L WITHANEGG! so its a win!

don’t expect for good bbq or teriyaki or anything in their menu. it’s not bad but not as good as sarku japan’s. you get what you pay for. i was charged twice the last time we bought food here. i talked to one of the cooks(in my calmest voice) since the cashier couldn’t communicate well in english and i was told to come back 2 – 3 days after to get my money back. without apologies and giving me attitude like i was annoying him. like, seriously dude?! it’s only $ 9.25 and you can’t give it to me right now after two days since the last purchase? i asked the store’s phone number and it seemed like they don’t have one so the cook gave me his personal number! smh!

I come here for the spam musubi. For 3 something, you get two really big pieces that comes in a tray and a cover. You get to see the food being made on the spot nice and hot. There’s always different tea samples at the counter that I try out whenever I order something. Love the musubi.

I let my piggy pregnancy hormones get the best of me and really really wanted to go here after I saw a photo of their loco moco pop up on my newsfeed. The dark gravy looked so delicious poured on top of the rice, macaroni salad and meat. So that’s what I ordered today. And a side of fries. The patty was a frozen hamburger patty cooked on the grill. It had zero flavor. The macaroni salad was super warm(gross) and extra creamy. …and I really like mayonnaise. But it was way too much mayo and again, no flavor. Except if you count mayonnaise as a flavor. The stars are for the gravy. Bc I love gravy. And it was what kept me eating my plate. The fries were ok. You just have to eat them super fast while they’re hot bc once they get cold, they’re kinda like the cardboard taste from In n’Out.

Gave the special Hawaiian chicken BBQ with rice a try while visiting the Tanforan Shopping Mall. Also tried its tea with pearls. Food was so so. Went back to the counter with its free tea offer when I check-in on its Unilocal page, but thet said I’ve paid it already, they won’t honor it. I asked for no ice. The tea was room temperature not cold as others generally were without ice. Wish they would give themselves a free advertising if they 2−111inform every customer with Internet to check-in @ their Unilocal page to receive free tea offering. I also wish they would increase their quality, otherwise what’s the point? I had to go to restroom after eating there…

In the mall doing a run at the Target, decided to grab dinner at the food court before everything closed, instead of the norm at this mall(Panda Express, Sakaru) I was persuaded by a coupon shoved in my face while walking by to try something different.

I was looking for the food court after visiting target and was heading to the Panda Express as I had the urge for asian food and walked right by this spot. The line up at PE was way to long and then I saw someone with what looked like huge sushi on their plate. Whaaatttt??? Turns out its something called Spam Musubi They take a slice of spam, marinate it in teriyaki sauce, fry it, put it on rice and wrap it up in Nori. Its one big sushi like 1.5×4 inches long. It was actually quite good. This is a common hawaiian snack. I also had their chicken special. I dont have a clue what makes it Hawaiian BBQ but they do have a sweetish teriyakish sauce that goes on top. basically, chicken grilled with rice and salad, macarano salad and even a sunny side up egg on top. It was good. The portions were generous and the whole combination was actually a great idea with the unexpected egg and macaroni salad. I have no idea if it is part of a food chain or not(it didnt have that polished look to the place) but this fast food meal will be a great foodie moment to remember. i actually bought a mold at Daiso for it on Mrket street. see that review

NOTE: Came here on 8÷4÷2014 The chicken katsu I ordered was really fried and dry and did not have much chicken meat. I did like the coupon one of the samplers gave me though. If you buy one chicken katsu or BBQ chicken combo for $ 5.89, you get the second one for $ 3.99. This saved me about $ 4 from buying 2 $ 6.99 chicken katsus. Service is decent. Their macaroni is okay compared to L&L and rays Hawaiian barbecue.

On a Sunday afternoon my wife and we’re walking around the mall, little after lunchtime. So decided to get something to eat. We were heading for Panda Express and Jakes had a young man giving out free samples of there BBQ Beef in front of their place, we tasted it, it was good. So we place our orders, my wife had BBQ Chicken and I had the BBQ Chicken & Beef with two Root Beers. When we got our food they came with white rice, macaroni, salad plus mine had a sunny side up egg on top. We enjoyed the food and finished it, paid almost $ 20.00 it was worth it. If we are in the neighborhood again go for seconds, so enjoy everyone.

Chicken Teriyaki Plate Portions are tremendous and at a really reasonable price, typical of Hawaiian fare Flavors were solid and chicken wasn’t dried out Nothing extraordinary in terms of flavors but don’t let the simplicity steer you away Best bang for your buck when compared to all the other food court offerings Overall Thoughts Great portions, well priced, and will easily satisfied anyone’s hunger and wallet

I decided to order something from here because my daughter wanted spam musubi, so I ordered the BBQ shortribs. I asked for a sub of fries, instead of macaroni salad, since I don’t like mac salad. It also comes with green salad and rice. First, the green salad was very soggy, almost to the point that they partially cooked it. The rice had a weird taste to it, and it was a bit on the mushy side. The meat had an «old» taste to it; you know when beef gets past the expiration date, and starts to turn brown? It had that kind of taste to it– plus it was very fatty. I got three shortribs with my order, and two of them were laden with fat along the side. The French fries were okay, though. My daughter didn’t care for the spam musubi; she said the sauce tasted weird. I tried it and thought it was alright… Although they put way too much rice. I will not return. I hope I don’t get sick from the old tasting meat!

Jake’s was ok. During a busy shopping trip to the mall, the SO was hungry and decided we needed to eat then and now!(boys…) So, we ventured around the downstairs food court a bit until we were offered a sample at Jake’s. The chicken that they gave us was flavorful and cooked properly so it wasn’t dry. He was sold! We ordered the Chicken Katsu and BBQ Chicken combo($ 6.99) with 6 wings($ 3.99). The BBQ chicken was fine tasting, I think you get a good amount for how much you’re charged. The flavor wasn’t as much Hawaiian bbq as I would say Chinese stir fry… The katsu was freakishly dry and overdone. It was dry, bland, tasteless and overall an annoying dish. At some point, I wanted to walk back over and ask for a refund. The macaroni salad was just as blah. All in all, it’s good enough for what I paid(Without the Katsu, it would’ve been $ 5.49 so I highly suggest that), but am I dying to go back? Not at all.

The service was great! These people serve up food fast and they were all so friendly. During peak hours, they give tastings of their most popular dishes. I, however, went straight for their spam musubi! It comes out super warm and toasty — it’s delish. If I’m ever in the neighborhood, I’d definitely get this again. I’ll have to try more than just the spam musubi…

Had the spam and egg meal. Real good! Maybe not worth the 7.31 but I was hungry. Contents: a small serving of salad 3 slices of spam a bed of rice 2 pieces of tempura 3 small pieces of zucchini There wasn’t anything great to say about this plate. No awesome sauce or spices. Pretty plain. A dish I could my myself. Avoid wasting money unless youre really hungry and lazy to make yourself.

Brand new addition to the food court in Tanforan Mall offering Hawaiian Barbecue style food. About time there was something new to choose from! They took the empty spot of the Mediterranean place that closed quite a while back… can’t remember the name. I would say it’s on par with the likes of L&L and Ono, Reasonably priced. Worth a try if you’re in the Mall looking for something to eat.
