We especially love their«Juicy Dumplings.» Try the honey walnut shrimp or the Tan Tan noodles. You won’t be disappointed!

I came here a few times now and every time, it’s a little bit empty inside which makes you kind of second-guess yourself. However, the food tells a different story. Food: I tried the honey walnut shrimp and Xiao long bao from here. The honey walnut was almost perfect — only bad thing is that the walnuts were burnt so I didn’t want to eat it. The Xiao long bao was really good! would’ve been better if it had more juice but it was some of the best I’ve had in SD. Service: Only one man(I believe he’s either the owner or main chef) attended the tables and the front desk so he just goes in and out. He was nice however. Overall, I think if they redid the décor and hire a front person, it would be more aesthetically pleasing and might get more customers. They really deserve more attention than that.

Overall: For my first time coming here, it was just alright, but I don’t blame the restaurant. Nothing was particularly bad but I wished I got something else on the menu LOL The food was plentiful and prices were good. If I were to come here, I’d go with a large group of friends and order multiple dishes to try rather than going as a date spot and ordering ½ dishes. Service: So good! There was only one person working and he was so nice. He was always asking us how’s our meal, filling out water… just overall really good service! Food: I ordered honey walnut shrimp and Shanghai Noodles — Honey Walnut Shrimp: literally, can not go wrong with this. Buttery, sweet, and crispy on the outside while rich and juicy on the inside. Recommend highly. — Shanghai Noodles: described as curry rice noodles with an egg omelette shell filled with beef, vegetables, and shrimp. I found this quite bland tasting and needed to reach for the chili oil quite frequently. Rice noodles were soft but were quite dry. Overall, food was average(3 stars) but service and décor were excellent(5 stars) so I’m just going to give this 4 stars. I’d come here again to choose the more popular dishes such as the XLB(juicy buns) and the chicken/beef/pork dishes.

Chinese food is not my favorite and Red Moon was our last resort to eat, there was no wait or anything. Only one guy working the front… But to our surprise it turned out to be a good dinner. We sat, ordered and for one guy managing the fort it was decent service, slow at times but better than some restros on Convoy area. We ordered Mongolian beef, tan tan noodles, stir fry chicken with crispy noodles and the xiao long Bao(XLB). The Mongolian beef turned out good, beef quality wasn’t bad and there wasn’t too much oil. I didn’t like the tan tan noodles cause it was too nutty. If you love the taste of peanuts this is for you. The chicken with crispy noodles was flavorful an good. The XLB was good, so much better than Tasty noodles next door. Well likely come back for some tasty Chinese food.

I thought Red Moon Noodle House was just okay. — TanTan noodles: interesting interpretation of the dandan mian I am familiar with and love. I was surprised, to say the least, when I saw broth with my noodles, because this dish is not known to be soup-y. «Eh,» i thought, «I’m game.» But the flavor of the noodles/soup was very, very mild(not spicy). Not savory, spicy, or bright enough for me. The texture of the noodles were pretty good. — Xiao long bao: okay as well. Not big or soup-y enough for my tastes, but decent. The service was fast, and owner(?) seemed friendly, but the food left me wanting.

Red Moon is a no-thrills Chinese restaurant that delivers some surprisingly good food for the very casual environment. After being indecisive about a handful of other places nearby, my friends and I decided to give Red Moon a shot. It’s been on my list to try the xiao long bao soup dumplings which for ages was an off-menu item here. When we arrived last weekend, the XLB was on the menu and we ordered it. There were only 6 in the order for $ 6.45(usually restaurants serve this 10 in an order for around $ 8) and the presentation wasn’t good, but I’m glad that they were as good(thick housemade skin, juicy soupy pork inside, fresh ginger on the side) as the now-shuttered Shanghai City that used to be my go-to place for XLB on Convoy Street. I only wish they came in a standard order of 10 because we gobbled up the small portion fast. We ordered two Chinese noodle dishes: the tan tan(dan dan) noodles and crispy noodles, both which came with huge portions. The tan tan was a bit different than what I’ve had before but it was delicious, hearty and came in a large bowl. Normally tan tan is served cold with a light peanut oil sauce and very little else, but this was like a steaming bowl of noodles in a huge bowl of peanut soup with a ton of ground meat. The crispy noodles were Hong Kong style with a mass of gravy and meat/veggies on top of a crispy pancake of skinny golden fried egg noodles. I felt that they didn’t give enough noodles for the amount of toppings but that is a small complaint as they did a great job with the savory gravy and a ton of meat/veggies that were cooked perfectly, especially the tender meat. Service was very slow, and our waiter seemed like a one-man show, taking orders, entering them into the register and getting checks, grabbing plates from the kitchen and cleaning up. Still, I would probably come back given the large portions, low prices(under $ 10 each item) and tasty dishes.

Came here with a hankering for noodles and it turned ok. We ordered the tan tan noodles, Xiao Long Bao, and salt and pepper pork chops. Three of my favorite dishes. The Xiao Long Bao were ok, not enough soupy goodness but fine. The tan tan noodles were ok as well, perhaps on the salty side but it had that slight sour peanut taste that I love. As for the salt and pepper pork chops they were a little bit of a let down. Just not crispy enough, and with a slight hint of curry. Not that that’s necessarily bad, but I was just expecting more salt and pepper and spicy instead. Service was very personable and nice. There weren’t many people in there but I’d come back if I were in the area.

Just came here for dinner with my husband and we really enjoyed ourselves. This place is small but that’s ok. it’s definitely a mom and pop restaurant which I would go to any day over mainstream Chinese restaurants. We ordered 3 entrees, soup and tea and our bill was $ 32… Sweet! Service was on point and it was very clean. We ordered this awesome shredded beef fried rice that I could literally live off of for the rest of my life! I will drive all the way from Chula Vista just to order this rice again. We also got the spicy tofu in I think a bean curd sauce and the Singapore noodles. Both these dishes where good but I wouldn’t order the Singapore noodles again just because the curry is very strong in this dish and I’m not a huge lover of curry but my husband enjoyed it. Will be returning to try much more on their menu!

This place is solid! the service is slow as there was only one cute older man running the entire place at a popular dinner time. The food is also solid. I definitely appreciate that this place is all about the food, putting aside all the other stuff like presentation, etc! The menu is a bit confusing so I definitely relied on recommendations on Unilocal to help order and was not disappointed! We ordered: –Xiao Long Bao(Soup Dumplings): This was pretty decent! Definitely comparable to that of Tasty Noodle House. I was sad because an order only comes with 6, but very happy with the amount of soup in each dumpling! The meat inside was also pretty tasty! I do still like the dumpling coating of the XLB at Tasty Noodle House and Dumpling Inn better, but flavorwise and soupwise, this place hits the spot! –Singapore Noodles: YUM! I love love love egg so this was definitely a treat. It is basically a giant egg covering curry flavored stir fry like noodles with shrimp, pork, and cabbage mixed amongst the noodles. This was pretty good! Not that big of a fan of curry, but the ridiculously awesome amount of egg definitely helped that flavor! –Crispy Chicken in Sauce With Veges: This was pretty good! I was surprised because the chicken(despite being drowned in their delicious sweet, black sauce) was CRUNCHY! They served it in a black stove pot so this helped keep the dish super fresh! The chicken dish came with veges like broccoli, baby corn, bell pepper, mushrooms also immersed in the sauce. Definitely delicious and will try another meat item in this sauce again! Also came with rice! For about $ 10 per person with TONS of left overs, this was a pretty good deal! I like that this place isn’t really that busy despite located in the busiest plaza in Convoy. Will definitely consider coming back to try other items!

I was torn between going to Red Moon and another restaurant that just opened, and I am so glad that we ended up here. The kind of food served at Red Moon is the closest thing I can describe as comfort food speaking as an Asian American. I grew up with Americanized Chinese, but would regularly eat, or go out for more traditional Asian fare and my plates reflected that. Tender, flavorful xiao long bao and crispy fried noodles are my ultimate comfort foods and I could finally have them together! My plate of noodles came piled with your usual unassuming«Western veggies», baby corn, broccoli, carrot coins, bamboo shoots and water chestnuts, but good GOD were they cooked well. Those veggies had that mouthwatering toothsome bite, and the broccoli heads soaked up all that hot saucy gravy. I was dancing in my seat while I ate. Oh yeah, it had beef, chicken and shrimp in there too. BUTTHOSEVEGGIESTHO. Ugh, brought me back to my childhood. And the owner was so nice! Attentive and very observant, but not intrusive. He offered second helpings of rice to my partner, and was worried the food was too salty when he saved the rest of his portion. It was huge! My babe is just watching his weight ;) When he packed my food up, he insisted I take home some hot chili oil since he noticed I doused my dumplings with a shmear. I can understand why so many folks feel so at home here, and describe the food as comforting. I felt like I was cared for by a favorite uncle, and it didn’t quite feel like dinner service. There was a lot of trading of thank you’s and it genuinely sounded like he wanted to see you again. For a lot of people, food is offered as an act of love or care and red moon is filled to the gills with it! I look forward to coming back for the red moon beef. Thank you :)

As part of our adventure in San Diego, we try out new restaurants every weekend in the area. And for this weekend, we stopped by Red Moon. First, it wasn’t very crowded compared to the other restaurants in the plaza. we got our seats right away. Immediately, we noticed there was only one server running the restaurant: taking orders, cleaning the tables, seating customers, bringing out dishes, and taking care of the bills. Granted the restaurant isn’t very big nor having too many tables, the lady in charge was BUSY! Regardless, she provided us with great service, attentive and always with a smile. Not knowing what kind of food they serve before coming in, I quickly noticed that this is a fusion place… Uh oh… I have to admit that I am less of a fan for fusion food in general(I believe in authentic cuisines). But a Japanese-Chinese fusion is certainly interesting, not something you would come across everyday. We order the beef fried noodle and the Red Moon beef as entrees… And they did not disappoint. The portions are quite big, on par to many of the places around, and price was reasonable. Things were on the saltier side, as pointed out by many fellow Unilocalers, but they were tasty. I really enjoyed the Red Moon beef as it was nicely cooked, a little over cooked, but it actually made it better. The service did take quite long, as it was severely understaffed for the weekend, but the experience was saved by the nice lady running the place. Personally, I would come back for the Red Moon beef — it is really a fusion dish you don’t find everywhere. and might I add — it’s good with beer!(I enjoyed the leftover a day after… and it was still good!)

Prelims: Nicely decorated location squashed between Yogurtland and a pub, this restaurant is brightly lit, has funky hours on Monday, and is serviced by a couple well-seasoned in the restaurant industry. Former owners of another restaurant on Convoy, the owners know and love noodles and wanted to make a restaurant that was fitting of their style of cooking from their time back home — the menu, therefore, is an amalgam of their various experiences mashed together to form something that appears disjointed but actually is more friendly for everyone to have whatever they feel like(as long as it includes noodles). Personally, I love their Xiao Long Baos. It is pricey, but definitely comparable to the ones that are at Shanghai Saloon and Dumpling Inn and Tasty Noodle next door. It’s got plenty of soup inside, very flavorful, and a great appetizer for the noodles b/c it sets up your taste buds for the good stuff to come after. Half the time, I just get two orders and I’m good for the rest of the time. The Mongolian beef is an excellent dish that is very tender and delicious — get it with some Tan Tan noodles and you’ll be singing praises to the moon. The red moon. That is the mascot here apparently. I think. My wife loves their Champion noodles — I agree that it’s a solid entrée, but I think it has more to do with the nostalgia factor that it does with the flavor. It’s got the egg noodles with pork, carrots, cabbage, onion, and seafood. It’s a great plenty of savory and salty, with a nice broth to help cut through all the meat and seafood in the pot. Overall a very good dish. For the prices, not a bad deal — if you get the XLB, tan tan noodles and champion noodles, it’ll set you back about 25 bucks. Not bad for an appetizer and two entrees. TL;DR good noodles. Good dumplings. Good food. Good price.

Came here with my family on a Sunday. We were planning on going to Tasty Noodle House, but it was packed. Checked Unilocal and this place got great reviews and there was no wait so we headed here instead. Glad we did. I think I had the best xiao long bao in San Diego here. Really flavorful and yummy. We also ordered the black pepper beef which came on a sizzling plate, the seafood claypot, and shrimp fried rice. My dad wolfed down the shrimp fried rice. He really loved it. I thought the black pepper beef was pretty good, the beef was pretty tender and it wasn’t too salty like I worried it would be. It was perfectly savory. The seafood claypot had a lot of different items in it: shrimp, fish, squid, bamboo shoots and other veggies. It was just okay, a bit on the blander side so I think they could’ve used a bit more seasoning. But all in all, a pretty good meal.

Food: 4.5 Stars I really enjoy Red Moon Noodle House. Why? Because it’s relatively cheap, non-pretentious, and all about good food. Foodie type — not too salty, not too sweet, just perfect. Significant other and I are big fans of small businesses(mom and pop type shops). Between the 2 of us, we ordered the following: — Soup Dumplings — significant other says that these are the«best» soup dumplings he’s tried thus far in San Diego. I would agree! There is actually some«soup» in the dumplings unlike some of the other restaurants that we’ve tried thus far. Picture — — Singapore Noodle — this was a fun treat. It is curry noodles with meat and veggies wrapped in egg. I don’t know how the egg is cooked in a way that it is perfectly wrapped over the noodles when served. For the picture that I took, I broke the egg, so that you can see some of the curry noodles underneath. Picture — — Szechuan Tofu — healthy with great flavors, not too salty and just perfect Picture — — Egg Drop Soup — refreshing Picture — Significant other and I will be returning, esp. for their soup dumplings and singapore noodles. ENJOY! Support small businesses!

I had this place bookmarked so that I could try the Xiao Long Bao, so after a friend and I were heading past the area and she was craving noodles I suggested this place. We arrived at approximately 9 o’clock about an hour before they close on Saturday nights. All the other reviews are spot on. The parking lot is absolutely crazy, but we got lucky and found a spot right in front. The restaurant itself was pretty dead. There was one other table in the small dining room and after about 10 minutes they left. Although about 20 minutes to 10pm(their closing time) it started filling up, with a group coming in at 10pm and sitting down for dinner.(I have a thing about going to a restaurant a half hour before they close, let alone at closing, but then again I may have spent too many years in the industry.) Our server was a very nice lady. She was polite and pleasant and answered all of our questions. Food! We started with the Xiao Long Bao(or soup dumplings … Or «juicy dumpling» as the menu labels it. Yes, they have now made it on the menu. $ 6.45 for 6 at the time of my visit). My friend had never tried them before so even though I can easily finish off 10 or more myself, I agreed to share. They were served with a side of thinly sliced ginger in vinegar and we were told this enhanced their flavor. My friend was really impressed and commented on how good they were with and without the ginger/vinegar addition. I also really liked them and thought about ordering a second batch. We each got a noodle dish. My friend got the Yakisoba and I got the«Chao Men.» Strangely enough they said it was basically the same dish with different sauces with the Yakisoba being slightly sweeter. I thought Yakisoba was a buckwheat noodle and chow Mein(west coast; Lo Mein on the east coast) was an egg noodle, but their restaurant their rules. Either way it was good. I liked mine better and my friend liked hers better. But neither liked it as much as the Red Moon Beef. My friend was really impressed by this dish. She kept commenting on how good it was. I enjoyed it as well. Not too sweet, not spicy. It was crispy without the taste of being fried or battered. I would definitely order it again along with the soup dumplings.

Red Moon is one my favorite spots in Kearny Mesa these days. It’s simple, tidy, inexpensive, and tasty. Squeezed between O’Brian’s pub and a fro-yo shop in what’s probably the busiest strip mall on Convoy, it doesn’t draw much attention to itself. But walk on in. Even when the neighboring businesses are slammed, there are always a few open tables at Red Moon. The menu is a nice mix of Chinese and Japanese, both traditional and Americanized. My guest and I shared 3 different plates: xiao long bao(the house speciality, apparently), chicken yakisoba, and Red Moon beef. The xiao long bao really is as good as the hype suggests. These soup-filled dumplings are tender and flavorful. I only wish they were bigger. The chicken yakisoba and Red Moon beef are both solid main courses. The yakisoba is fairly traditional and nicely done, although I think it could be spicier. The Red Moon beef is shaved thinly and is a nice mix of sweet and tangy and crispy — yum. It’s practically beef-candy and doesn’t need rice at all. Service is great. The proprietor is this friendly Chinese lady who makes all of her customers feel at home. A total charmer. I definitely back to explore more of Red Moon’s menu, but probably during off-hours to avoid the associated parking nightmares.

The Xiao Long Bao were pretty tasty, with the ginger and vinegar sauce to compliment the dumpling. The Singaporean Noodles are so tasty! I love the thin noodles and the curry flavor mixed into the noodles. They top the noodles with a thin egg layer that perfectly encapsulates the noodles. Add a little chili oil to your spice liking and you are all set! We also tried the assorted noodle soup which had some tasty veggies and meats. Not my favorite dish of the day, but still pretty good. Lastly, we were served free milk tea for being students! The owner was so nice and the service was excellent!

Pretty good place if you can find parking. I dread this lot. Every time I come here I regret not parking on the street and walking. The interior is cool, spacious and minimal. The menu has a lot of interesting dishes. My old man tendencies took over again and went for the soup. I ordered the champon soup and vegetable egg rolls. Food comes out very hot. Very good quality chili oil on the table is a great sign. Vegetable egg rolls were some of the best vegetable egg rolls I’ve had. Prepared perfectly with quality ingredients. Love the large golden flakes. The soup was pretty good. It’s a basic soup with subtle broth, egg noodles, beef, calamari and some vegetables. The chili oil helps give this dish more life. Should of probably went with the tan tan noodle soup. The soupy dumplings look and sound great. I’ll definitely be getting those the next trip with some salt & pepper shrimp. This place has a lot of quality ingredients in their dishes and are pretty serious about their preparation. Great place and can’t lose coming here. Excited to come back and try more.

Red Moon Noodle House is near the top of my San Diego Chinese restaurant list. Like many Unilocalers before us we ordered lots of food and were not disappointed by any of our dishes. We ordered the xiao long bao, singapore noodles, rice cakes with beef, and black pepper beef. I would order each dish again. First, the XLB is definitely the best in San Diego. It was the right amount of soup and had a nice balance of flavor. Still not Din Tai Fung quality, but great for San Diego. The Singapore noodles were also fantastic. The curry flavor was strong, but not overpowering. The egg on tops of the noodles was cooked perfectly. These noodles are definitely crave-worthy! The rice cakes dish was also delicious as was the black pepper beef. I can’t wait to go back again!

Taste– **** Service– ***** Ambiance– *** Parking– *** Convoy is unbelievable for Asian food, and this little place deserves a solid 4 stars. The food is reasonably good, the location is accessible, but the service really puts everything over the top. The owner of the restaurant(mentioned in other reviews) really takes pride in his business. He takes his time to personally interact with each customer and is very attentive without being intrusive. He speaks Chinese, and also overheard him speaking Japanese,(and English fluently) a very talented man! They have a few unique dishes here such as the Tan Tan noodles, and the Singapore noodles. Both dishes were good, but lacking spices; I figure they are probably catering to the American folks. The Tan Tan noodles were supposed to be spicy, and I would have called that a spice level 1 or 2. My favorite dish of the evening was the Mongolian beef, which was extremely tender and delicious. The Soy sauce ramen was a miss for me, because to me there was a lack in depth of flavor. Overall I think this is a solid place to get some great Chinese food. I like that the menus all have pictures, so you don’t have to guess what each dish looks like. The service for me was fantastic, and worth coming back for.
