Since 1938 Roosters and hens adorn the walls and shelves. Parking lot in the rear. Order to go or stay to eat. The pies are where it’s at here. Can’t go wrong with any of them. It’s just hard to pick which one for dessert. There is a reason their chicken pot pie is world famous. The freshly made crust, tender juicy chicken combined with flavorful turkey and the best chicken gravy to top it off. May seem simple but boy oh boy I’ve never found a better one ever! My favorite sides are the cole slaw,(it’s all in the home made dressing) corn and biscuits. Each time I visit I always try to get myself to order something different, sometimes I do, but then I miss the chicken pot pie. So I just order a set of four to go, then I can have them for lunch at home, perfect! It’s obvious everyone that works here is happy and it shows in everything they do. Makes for such a pleasant atmosphere.

In a word, horrible. This place makes Hometown Buffet look like a 5-star restaurant. Having been in San Diego for 6 years now, I was always hearing how good the pot pies were. I love a good pot pie… hell, I even love frozen pot pies. If only theirs were as good as frozen. Believe the other reviewers when they say you can get a better chicken pot pie at KFC, or better yet, Marie Callendar’s in the frozen section of the local Walmart! The mashed potatoes resembled, and tasted, like wallpaper paste… completely devoid of any flavor. The kicker? You main dish is carted to you on the bottom shelf of little trolley carts, merely 6 inches above the filthy floor. Save your money and time, go elsewhere.

After years of driving by this place I finally decided to go try it. Everyone raved about this place so why not. Um… I was majorly disappointed. The server I had was nice but I didn’t like the fact that every time she refilled our water. She literally reached across the table leaning over our food to do so. Instead of letting us hand her the cups like other restaurants do. The food tasted like cafeteria food from elementary school to me honestly. There was no flavor at all and the pot pie they are so famous for to me taste basic. You can get a better one at KFC.

Simple food, well done, total lack of pretension, what’s not to like? The chicken pie is a mid century culinary period masterpiece-crispy crust, chunks of meat, and that pale chicken supreme gravy, just like gramma used to make. I like to get it to go, along with extra gravy and dinner rolls, then cook my own fresh potatoes, carrots and green beans or peas– it’s a soul satisfying dinner that will bring you back in time. Chicken pies are 3.99 each, it’s a Value dinner all by itself! The whole family, kids included will chow down, trust me. Can’t wait to try their fruit and cream pies!

Absolutely horrible. So we walk in excited to try this place. We’re seated waiter comes over we’re ready and he asks us for drinks an order. We said 1 diet coke, 1 regular coke with EASYICE. Babe ordered pancake combo with SUGARFREESYRUP bc ges diabetic, I the eggs benedict. This guy brings us coke with extra ice, and regular syrup. Already a tad bit irritated but fine none the less. But what made us decide to never ever come here again was the fact that one of my eggs was not poached correctly as you can see in the pic. Not only could I NOT eat half of my food but after telling him about it he still made me pay for it and didn’t even offer to make it again!!! As an employee of the hospitality profession with a bachelor’s degree in hospitality management I am absolutely disgusted. You do not make people pay for food with that large mistake made. I could have gotten samonila poisoning had I ate it. I’m going to be reporting this place to the FDA. Sure he took a couple dollars off but I even told him I know it’s not his fault and he thanked me for understanding but this is a very big no no in this industry. He didn’t even offer to make it up again. What kind of morons are running this place? First you get the basic things wrong and then you give me poisonous food to eat and you make me pay for it? I had no problem paying for the other food and I demand for a reimbursement or some sort of compensation for this down right ignorance and disrespect. As I said I will be reporting them to the FDA and food health department.

I have been going to this place since I was a kid but tonight was the last time. The service was decent though slightly slow. However everyone was friendly and they kept our water glasses filled. The food though! My one son had the BLT and 3 hours later is non stop puking. The rest of our food was so bland and mediocre. We had a chicken pot pie, the roast beef dinner and two kids meals. The tastiest part of the dinner were the rolls. The pie was just okay. Lots of other places to get a good piece of pie. I’m very disappointed as I feel like this is a San Diego landmark but the quality of food has really gone down hill and the prices have gone up.

First timer and loved it. Old school atmosphere and good olé’ fashioned American food. What’s not to love. The pot pie was simply delicious, I could have had two but for the mash potatoes, gravy, veggies, and strawberry cream pie(which was to die for). Come with an appetite. Service was terrific. Whenever I’m in SD from now on, this will be my first stop.

A cafeteria style food nothing fancy, just an old American favorite the Chicken Pot Pie. I grew up in North Park in part of San Diego. I recall, my mom brought me there to eat. When we were sitting down inside the restaurant, I remembered there were ladies pushing a cart around to serve the customer with their orders. When I came back to dine my olfactory kicks in from a memory scent. It was the chicken pot pie that lingers in the air as the wait staff take it out of the kitchen. It brought back memories of my childhood. It was like Deja Vu, I remember the surroundings and decorations of chicken statues. The chicken pot pie meal is plenty for $ 8.99. It comes with the pie, corn, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, dinner rolls and pie. Very good price and its good enough to feed two people.

Green grass around us Mountain trails for us to trek Blue sky above us. Phel Steinmetz introduced me to the Chicken Pie Shop back when this place was located on the corner of 5th Av. in Hillcrest. We were on a field trip to apply the photo techniques we learned in the classroom. This was our last stop on our day long adventure. Chicken pie was the best I’d ever had. In the years since Phel took me and my kid fishing at his favorite lakes as well as other field trips to learn photography. The Chicken Pie Shop has moved to El Cajon Blvd and added new menu items. Phel passed away. Prices have gone up. The new location was remodeled. There is free wifi now. Apple Pie $ 8.25. Flaky crust with a nice crunchy sugary top crust. :-) Apple filling had very good flavor. I really like how this pie taste as often bakers will add too much sugar and the flavor of the apple is hidden. This pie is very nicely balanced. :-) Best pie I’ve had in the under $ 10 class. Chicken and turkey pot pie. Pie is not fancy as there is just chicken and turkey inside. I do love the flavors from the gravy, crust, and chicken & turkey. There must be some magic dust in the gravy as I’ve brought frozen pies and baked them at home but the flavor is not as good without the awesome chicken gravy. $ 4.95 including roll. I love the fresh piping hot roll. Flavor is as delicious as a plain looking roll can be. :-) Fried chicken dinner $ 12.99. Nice crunchy batter. Chicken was tender and juicy. Flavor was like homemade. Peach pie $ 2.25 per slice. Big slices of peach fill the pie. Crust is flaky and crunchy. Flavor is pretty good. Strawberry pie $ 2.25 per slice. Filled with whole strawberries and topped with whipped cream. Bottom crust is nice and crunchy. Strawberries tasted fresh and juicy. All those flavors mixed in my mouth created a flavor explosion. This is one of the best fruit pies I’ve ever had. Much has changed since my first visit but the chicken pie and roll taste as delicious as ever and the ice is still those cloudy little cylindrical pieces…

Came in as an impulse purchase… lol! Didn’t know where to go and I suggested here since it’s been a while. New menus… new prices. Apparently, the son is taking over the business and bringing in some 21st century technology. Hopefully, he doesn’t lose the old school charm that makes this place fun to come to every once in a while. I have to say this again, «PEOPLE! THISISNOT A SHI-SHI5STARRESTAURANT!» I find it so funny when there’s negative reviews on here from people. Especially the ones that criticize that the food is not healthy… well, duh! If you want organic, fresh produce, made from scratch with artisan ingredients, well the prices are really going to go up… way up… also the ones that complain about the ambiance… benches please… STFU! I love this place and the waitresses are all kind and sometimes sassy. I got the meatloaf this time and it was good. Sure, if you eat here daily, it’s not the healthiest, but every once in a while, this a great place for comfort food!

We like coming here on a regular basis. We’ve been coming to The Chicken Pie restaurant ever since they where located in Hillcrest. Back then I remember it being more crowded. I guess the move wasn’t such a good move after all. The food is satisfactory and the service is usually good. The«Chicken Pie“‘ itself is a good meal. The pies are stuffed with chicken and veggies topped off with gravy, but I usually go for the fried fish dinner.

You can seriously not go wrong with this place. I haven’t had much from the lunch menu but the breakfast be on point. The ambience is pretty country, I wouldn’t have it any other way. The food is pretty good and I always tip extra cuz the food is so cheap. 7 bucks for a 2 egg breakfast with toast and hash browns and I’m pretty satisfied. The service is good, there are a lot of older ladies running around and they’re really nice and it makes the place real homie. The chicken pies are the bomb, the soups are always amazing And the bathrooms are clean. Coffee’s not too bad either. I really love this place, a gem hiding in plain sight. Have yourself a good meal and a delectable piece of pie of desert. I highly recommend it.

Honestly, I want to give this place 2 or 3 stars… and I even tried to convince my bf(and myself) that it wasn’t that bad. I ate as much as could, but really it was a DISGUSTING. Nothing had flavor. Nothing was fresh. Everything came prepackaged, frozen, jellied or powdered. Just gross. It was somewhere between hospital food and a tv dinner.

My first experience with the Chicken Pie Shop was a few weeks ago. The chicken pies were amazing and you can tell the newish management is working hard to revamp the place. The cost for food was excellent, although I wasn’t thrilled about the banana cream pie. Definitely worth checking out. And a great lunch place!

The food is going bad, it used to be better. we ordered filet of fish, it is deep fried, it does not state that on the menu, very hard and dry. The cole slaw is tasteless, it has nothing other than the sliced cabbage, the cob salad came with no chicken, it used to have it before. They charged $ 9.65 for the fish, the menu online list it at $ 8.00. It seems that the new owner is spending money to remodel the place but the kitchen is going down.

Just thinking of these succulent chicken pies makes my mouth water. Been coming to the SD Chicken Pie shop for about 12 years now and I have always had good positive experiences. Conveniently located on El Cajon Blvd and Oregon St., this blast from the past diner will fill up your stomach without emptying your wallet. Free street parking as well as a parking area behind the shop, make takeout or dine-in a breeze. The Chicken Pie shop is famously known for, of course, their chicken pot pies. Served a la carte, with mashed potatoes, or in the full dinner, these chicken pies are delicious. A buttery and flaky crust encapsulates a wonderful combination of shredded chicken and gravy. The pie is then smothered with more hot gravy and served to the masses. My favorite, the chicken pie dinner, is served with a pot pie and mashed potatoes blanketed with gravy, cole slaw, vegetable of the day, a roll, and a slice of fresh baked pie for dessert. Amazingly, all of the aforementioned will cost you about $ 9.50. Now I will say that the food here is not on the level of spectacular; salt and pepper is almost always needed. It is likely that nothing that you eat will«Wow» you or fall into the category of best ever. However, the Chicken Pie Shop serves up some good food at an honest price, and they do so with a smile. If you step into the chicken pie shop and feel like you stepped back a few decades, don’t fret. They don’t call ‘em «The Good ‘Ol Days» for nothing. Just grab a seat at in this almost cafeteria style diner and let the good pies roll. Pie dinner or else! Don’t forget to add a cup of delicious chicken soup to your pie dinner for an incredibly low $ 0.69. Also, they do serve the pot pies frozen if you’re up for a take and bake. In addition, they have a separate counter for take out that will get you on your way in 10 minutes or less.

The entire pot pie dinner was yellow… I am pretty sure that the restaurant was built and then everything, including the food purchased in 1948, stayed there. It has the feel of one of those gems that might be featured in «Diners, Drive ins, and Dives,» but it simply does not have the taste. Altogether, my friend and I ate a pot pie dinner, side salad, and a grilled cheese. Pot pie was mediocre, at best. Side salad came out of a Dole Express bag. The pumpkin pie filling was watered down so it really only tasted like cinnamon. The grilled cheese was just two pieces of toast with ONE slice of Kraft singles in between– that is grilled cheese blasphemy. Two stars instead of one because the server was sweet and for the nostalgic feel. But 10⁄10 would not recommend.

Don’t do it! Resist the urge! It’s a trap! It does taste good but there are better options out there. Like something that isn’t a chicken pot pie. Or at least chicken pot pies that taste better than the ones you can buy at the grocery store and microwave. This place kind of reminds me of those restaurants that serve milk and cereal. Where is the incentive?

Based on my experience, I thought this was going to be a 1 or 2 star rating but after enjoying my meal, it is unquestionably a solid 4 stars! I grew up eating at a pie shop that was family owned and run for three generations so I’m pretty picky when it comes to a chicken pie. I happened to drive by this place one day and saw the sign and the words«chicken pie» caught my attention. From the outside, it looked like a traditional type of restaurant and today finally decided to try. They have parking in the back and there is plenty of parking. There are two sides when you enter; dine-in or take-out. I had thought about eating in, but the overall feel and look of the restaurant is very old school and I figured I would just take it home. They advertise fresh chicken pies every 15 minutes so you know it’s going to be fresh. I ordered the traditional Chicken Pie dinner which comes with the chicken pie covered in gravy, mashed potatoes with gravy, mixed vegetables, cole slaw, roll and a slice of pie. I’m a big fan of Club Sandwiches and saw they had this on their menu and figured I would order one as well. They make a traditional club with ham and turkey and added in avocado. I’m not a fan of ham on my club sandwich and prefer just turkey and definitely not avocado so I just asked them to leave off. They told me they make the sandwich fresh as well and it would be about 10 minutes and did I mind waiting. Well, 10 minutes certainly isn’t long at all so I told them of course I would wait. It was just about 10 minutes and I was handed my bag with two food containers. Fortunately, when I got to my car I took a look inside. Instead of what I ordered, I had two chicken pies. That’s it. No mashed potatoes, no vegetables, no sandwich. I was a bit put out to put it nicely, went back in and the guy who handed me the bag asked what was wrong. I even remember when he handed me the bag he repeated my order back to me so I initially didn’t think to check but fortunately did in the parking lot. I showed him what he gave me and he was incredibly apologetic but told me I would have to wait again for another sandwich to be made. I sat down again and waited. They didn’t offer me anything to drink while I waited, but fortunately it wasn’t too much longer. I did check before leaving and everything was as I ordered. So, getting home I was skeptical about how this would taste. It wasn’t as hot as I would like because I live a distance but it was certainly warm enough that I didn’t need to reheat it. I took one bite into the chicken pie and memories of the restaurant I used to go to when I was younger started flooding back in. These pies are undoubtedly made fresh and with the best ingredients! There is plenty of meat with just enough vegetables and sauce inside all baked inside the most delicious pie crust. The mixed vegetables taste like something I would get from the cafeteria back in high school. Not bad but just average. Yet still, I ate them all. Their cole slaw is very similar to KFC cole slaw which I happen to think is very good. The potatoes are smooth and with a delicious gravy. The whole size and portion of the Chicken Pie Dinner is perfect and the price at $ 9 you just can’t beat! The Club Sandwich! Well, I could sum it all up and say it’s equally as good as the chicken pie. They use real sliced turkey, not processed meat. They make it on three slices of toasted fresh white bread with lettuce, tomato and just the right amount of bacon. Cut in quarters and it came with a side of cole slaw(although you can order different sides with the sandwiches). I have had club sandwiches all over this country and even all over the world and I would put this Club Sandwich in the top 5, if not the top 3 I’ve ever had. So, overall… bad experience at the take-out. But it happens. The server at the counter was very nice although I’m am extremely against asking for a tip. It’s one thing if I had sat down and ate I would be more than happy to give a tip but for take-out? How do I know what the food is like? And clearly this service, albeit a mistake, was not worthy of a tip. What if I hadn’t checked until I got home? And the person at the counter even mentioned giving him a tip which automatically makes me NOT want to give a tip. Lastly, styrofoam containers. If you’ve read my reviews, this is more than a pet peeve of mine. For the store owners: you CANNOT recycle styrofoam here in San Diego. Just can’t be done… PERIOD. I have personally checked prices for recyclable containers and at most, it would cost you about 15 cents extra per container(for the large containers). You could easily pass that money onto the customer but there are manufactures of recyclable containers here in San Diego and you could probably get that price lower. Mark my words, it won’t be long before San Diego bans styrofoam. For readers, the food is excellent and I highly recommend.

I came in here alone and asked to be seated in a booth. There were about 15 or more of them available. The host/busser told me no and brought me to a table with an uncomfortable wood chair. I asked about all the other open booths available and he replied, no, this is all we have for you and that there is a large party coming in yet I saw other people getting seated in that same section of the room in booths. I wasn’t comfortable in the chair and asked the waitress again and the older waitress replied it’s not her it’s the other waitress and she only likes certain people in her area! I said to her what’s wrong with me and she said its her. I told her I’m a good tipper and actually the night before tipped $ 20 for a $ 20 bill. She said me on the divider half open booth and told me she will be my server. I’m an Italian/Polish female and felt totally discriminated against at this place. The food– was sub-par. They don’t even cook it to order. It’s brought out immediately on a cart like the cafeteria back in the school days. The coleslaw and roll was very good. Other than that, the did was below average, mashed potatoes were instant, and it was like the 70s in here. The employees who worked here back then probably still work here now and maybe that’s why the culture of discriminating against females is accepted. I don’t know who is running this place– the waitresses and busser or if there is an actual owner.

I am deeply appalled and saddened by my experience at this restaurant this evening. I will start off by saying, both my daughter and I are biracial. I am Latin American and my daughter is African American and Latin. As we walked in we were greeted at the door by a young lady(Caucasian) who directed us to sit at a booth. An older lady then approached us and sat down menus. She did not greet us, say hello, offer anything to drink, she merely left the menus and walked away. From the look in her eye, I knew it wasn’t going to be a good experience. Although my daughter and I were dressed nice for dinner, she gazed at us with a stare as if she had seen a pig being slaughtered, which left a disturbing feeling in my gut. We waited for her to return, as she walked towards our area, instead of coming to our table, she escorted two men(Caucasian) to their table, greeted them, asked them how their night was going, and what they wanted to eat, while me and my daughter observed. When she walked away again she gave us that same stare. Unfortunately, mute occurred after this but it is too much to add here. To keep this short, overall the service was terrible, my meal was not served correctly, coffee was never served, was never checked on throughout the meal. Just another example of how nothing has changed in America as far as different cultures and races and why we as humans can’t evolve. Horrible!

November 1, 2015 I have gone to this place since 2007, that’s when I moved to North Park. It is a San Diego staple and we most come at least once as a rite of passage. The place seems so small until you walk through the doors. It’s almost like an Alice In Wonderland moment, like the shop drank something and grew humongous. The food seems alright, you can beat the deals. I mean a pot pie, veggie of the day, coleslaw, dessert of your chose. and a somewhat hot roll, right? These days, you can get a good meal under nine dollars. We came here on a Sunday. Hubbs wanted to come here, he had a hankering for chicken pot pie. I watched as he mawed that pot pie, as fast as he could. Hubbs seemed to really like it :) I found my pot pie a little bland, I peppered and salted it, however the bland won… I ordered the rhubarb pie, it was the rhubarb bomb!

Everything about this place takes me back in time to the beloved visits to my grandparents’. The comfort food including Reuben sandwiches and chicken pot pie dinners, the clanking of eating utensils and the booths– everything about it says Mad Men, sans martinis. If you’re a food snob, I’d sit it out. For the rest of us, if you’re in the mood for some straight-up comfort food, I recommend the chicken pie dinner(with your choice of cafeteria-style dessert– I always go with the coconut cream!) Prices are low. Rooster décor. And lots of seniors. NP hipsters are increasingly patronizing here so I’d hurry up and grab a booth and enjoy the transport back in time.

Service was friendly but extremely slow when I came for dinner last Sunday & it was not even busy! I ordered: Pie Dinner $ 7.50 = Mashed potatoes, vegetables, cole slaw, roll, dessert — The dinner came out within 5 minutes & I was instantly disappointed because the pot pie was room temperature & did not taste fresh. The sauce & the pie itself was good but the meat was tough. The cole slaw was delicious & sweet but the other sides were simply okay. There is a variety of pies they serve everyday & special pies they serve on certain days. I ordered the Pumpkin Pie & it was bland. My boyfriend order the Apple Pie & the crust was sugary & delicious. All in all, the dinner was a steal considering the price but I would not come back because of the quality of the food.

This place offers some of the best feel good food. They have the best chicken soup, rolls and pot pies. Their pies have no fillers like veggies. It is only meat and gravy. My family has been coming here for years. The food is consistent, it always tastes the same. The prices are awesome too, they can not be beat. Service is what you would expect from a diner. Service is good but staff are not overly friendly. They take your order, bring your drinks, and bring your food. Don’t expect much else. Remember you are coming for the food and prices. Also, you can get any of the food to go. You can even get the pot pies frozen if you are traveling. I suggest it. No one else makes pot pies like these.

Haha, I dunno. I came here for the namesake. I’ve heard about this place for so long, I just never tried to come here. Finally decided to buckledown and convince some coworkers to give it a shot with me. We got the standard $ 7.50 pie dinner. This is honestly just a huge throwback diner type food. The chicken pot pie was ok. Seriously, it kind of reminded me of one of those marie calendar microwave frozen pot pies. Maybe marginally better. The side of mashed and peas/corn was ok. The roll was a big whatever. The dessert was decent actually. Really cheap pies man. For a full meal at this price, it’s a pretty good value. The pumpkin pie, apple pie, chocolate mud pie were all great. I think they charge like $ 1.50/slice if you don’t get the pie dinner. It’s some pretty cheap dessert. Well worth it.

Hubby and I went there for breakfast. We ordered the pot pie with eggs on top, hash browns, bacon and southern gravy and Farmer Brothers coffee(I am a huge fan of that coffee). I could only eat half. Big portions. The pot pie was exactly how I remember it from when I came as a girl. In fact, my great grandmother used to take my mom in the late 1950’s. Mom says it hasn’t changed much. I took a picture of all the chickens on the shelf and texted it to her and she guessed where we were right away. We bought a pot pie for mom and took it to her. If you are looking for comfort food and true nostalgia this is the place.

Killing it old school style here. Bad for you food that tastes great and is cheap. That explains the packed lot and line to be seated primarily made up of an elderly crowd, some big ass eaters and families. I like the basic Americana menu and wanted the daily special, but felt obligated to get the signature pot pie meal for the first visit. Comes out fast and fresh. Killer deal for the price. Pot pie is very good. They cut some corners with some of the ingredients, but it tastes great and makes you finally give up thinking how bad it is for you. Mixed vegetables much fresher and cooked better than anticipated. Mash potatoes and gravy hit the spot. I LOVE mashed potatoes and gravy and these are average at best, but got me excited because it’s been too long. Nice sweet roll and the chocolate crème pie is no joke. The waitress waiting on me at the counter was a sweetheart. I look forward to just coming here and sitting at the counter for a nice slice of cherry pie and coffee. All they need is to have a TV to play Twin Peak re-runs.

Cannot beat the prices for chicken pies here. Been coming here even to their prior location when our boys were small. Now we bring our grandchildren. Whether it’s for breakfast, lunch or dinner, you’ll find everything to be delicious and all at great prices! Make sure you save room for desserts to as the pies are some of the best around(the crust is the best!) And, the rolls are great for any time or occasion as I buy them by the dozen(or more) for gatherings of family during various holiday’s) — Call in on those though because a lot of people do the same as I do.

The only chicken pot pie I’ve ever had was a Marie Callender frozen one. Embarrassing, I know. My sister and her boyfriend would mention how good this spot is, and I wanted to try it, so we all went. A majority of the staff are older folks, and they’re kind and adorable! Also, it’s a humongous restaurant with an unimaginable amount of chicken statues/paintings. All three of us ordered the pot pie meal. It comes with a chicken pot pie full of fresh, delicious chicken, corn, mashed potatoes/gravy, and a roll. All of that for $ 8.10! My sister said the first time or so that she went it was only about $ 5. That’s a pretty drastic change. It’s still a reasonable price, though. It was tasty also! My sister said she normally gets the fried chicken dinner, so that’s something I’d like to try. The food came out fast, and when I say fast, I mean it. We ordered our food, and within the next less than literal 2 minutes, our meals were right there in front of us – hot and ready. Ultimately, yes, I’d come back! I think the only reason why I give it 3 stars is because I’m not TOO crazy about this place. It’s good and all that, but I can’t give it more than 3 stars.
