had a custom roll made of teriyaki chicken, avocado, and asparagus. the chicken was like boiled and minced or maybe canned chicken. did not taste like teriyaki at all. i could barely taste any teriyaki flavor. the rice is just plain steamed rice. it’s not seasoned and basically not really sushi rice. the spicy tuna roll was good other than the rice. seems like the good reviews here are about the sushi burrito… maybe next time, if ever.

It pains me to leave a 2 star review for this place, but I was just honestly not a fan. This was my first sushi burrito, and I was psyched that Sushi Freak lets you customize your own and also has numerous creative, pre-designed possibilities. When I entered, I was immediately a bit turned off by the smell – it seemed like there wasn’t much ventilation in the relatively small space, so the strong scents of the different fishes, seaweed, etc. were overpowering to me. I ordered the Beach Bum burrito with inari subbed for krab, and enjoyed watching the guys on the line make it. It looked very appealing on the plate, but when I bit into it I wasn’t pleased with how all the flavors combined, and it just seemed like each bite was really heavy with too much going on. It was served with a sweet and slightly spicy sauce mix on the side plus ginger, wasabi and soy sauce to add if you like but the experience was even less pleasant the more I added. I was able to finish half but, though still a bit hungy, just couldn’t handle the other half so I ended up taking it home for others to finish.

If you haven’t tried Sushi Freak you definitely have to make it here. This is the first time I’ve heard of ‘Sushi Burritos’ & was kind of skeptical at first but once I took a bite I was sold! It’s basically eating a Roided out Sushi Roll with a Southern California burrito form. My order took about 7 minutes for them to make & I ate using their outdoor seating. The only downside is that it’s in downtown & the parking always sucks downtown.

Yesssss, sushi burrito acquired! I’ve been hearing about them for over a year at this point, but living in Florida we don’t have many options. I had tried one place and didn’t really like it much, but I didn’t give up, because I knew I was meant to love the sushi burrito, this other place just must have done it wrong. I knew California was pretty much sushi burrito Mecca so for my trip to San Diego I bookmarked a few places that mentioned having them in the Unilocal reviws, but sushi freak was near the top of the list because so many reviews and pictures highlighted their sauces. I love sauce. Though I had bookmarked and had intentions to eat here, we actually ran into it by accident. We were on the trolly headed to the USS Midway when we passed Sushi Freak out the window. I started waving my arms around and telling my boyfriend we had to get off the train… so at the next stop we did and headed it. It was probably about 3pm so the lunch rush was over and we walked up to the counter. We decided to split something because we had a lot of things to eat in the city in a short amount of time, and I walked immediately up to the counter and ordered the gun show. They asked if we wanted regular or spicy masago(I went with regular) and the burrito was ready in a few minutes. My boyfriend was a little confused as I had walked up and ordered before he even looked at the menu… he should have known I had done my research, but he asked what he was eating. The gun show is a sushi burrito with tuna, salmon, crab salad and avocado. It is served with a sauce that is a blend of eel sauce and spicy mayo. The burrito was great! Everything I knew a sushi burrito had the potential to be. The rice was the right texture and flavor, with just enough to hold things together well, the fish tasted fresh, and the sauce was amazingggg. For a little over $ 10 this was easily shared(maybe you would want your own if it was a meal rather than an afternoon snack, but I think I would be really full if I ate the whole thing) so I think the portion is right on for the value. There was a small cucumber salad to decorate the plate as well. I feel like it was fate that the trolly brought me right past Sushi Freak, and I enjoyed everything about it from the food to the sauce to the service. It’s only the second sushi burrito I’ve ever had, but this one wins by miles… now if only they would open a Florida location :-)

T-shirt idea! «Everything is better as a burrito.» If the fine folks from Sushi Freaks want to take this idea and run with it I’ll accept a lifetime supply of their Dr. Eel Good burrito as acceptable compensation. They really do wonders at this fast casual concept. Hand held sushi lunches with very fresh ingredients at an affordable price. There’s about 8 different burrito options and a bunch of other rolls all with the same flavor combinations you’ve probably had at your favorite Izakaya. Only difference is these are perfect to take on the go! Do the Fist Bump or the aforementioned Dr. Eel Good and you might just freak. I did.

First time here, so wasn’t sure how to order and such. thankfully someone was looking at the menu while in line so I figured that’s how it worked. It was a little awkward ordering as the person taking my order was not even looking at me while getting my first item started, but I guess they wanted to get start as soon as they hear an order, which is neat. I ordered their Crunch Roll, Fried Calamari, Miso Soup, and Seaweed Salad. It didn’t take that long for my order to finish which was cool. I was able to watch them start and finish, so it was interesting how fast they were. The roll was really good! Large chunks of shrimp inside was a big surprise. The Fried Calamari was a bit too dry, but still wasn’t bad. They also have snacks on the side of the restaurant along with a variety of drinks, including Japanese drinks which was awesome! Overall, was really satisfied with my visit and will definitely come again!

Sushi Burrito’s sounds a lot since it’s packed with a lot of rice. I keep seeing people’s review’s say they pack a lot of rice in this, but doesn’t chipotle do the same thing? Better yet isn’t all burrito’s packed with a lot of rice? Um, YES! So quit your complaining and just have an open mind about this. It’s the greatest creation invented, and I don’t know why this wasn’t a «thing» before but I’d eat this over sushi rolls since it does get filling! I ordered the Beach Bum– seaweed, krab mix, coconut shrimp, toasted coconut, avocado, cucumber, cream cheese, mango and spring mix. LOVED this! It had a sweet bite, and crunch from the coconut shrimp, then a nice mango taste which made the whole thing delicious in my mouth. I love sweet and spicy from the sauce they give you. I was really satisfied with my sushi burrito. I couldn’t finish the other half so I took it home and of course devoured it! The place itself is a small spot on the corner in downtown. It’s by one of the trolley stops, not sure the station name but I will try taking the trolley next time to beat the meters or from driving. I went during lunch time with a friend. I haven’t drove down here during the afternoon so I was excited to see how downtown looked. I parked at a 1 hour meter that was down the block, I really wanted to park close since I didn’t know the area too well. I usually park at Ace Parking lot on Market Street since it’s $ 10 for the whole day but since I was only downtown for just a quick lunch with a friend, I opted for the meter which at first was hard to find for me since I never did meter parking in downtown. Make sure to bring quarters and read the signs for the meters. Also eating in here during the afternoon wasn’t bad at all, not too crowded and not a lot of people so I will definitely come back here again. Thank you Sushi Freak for a great experience and I can’t wait to try the other sushi burritos.

Sushi burritos! Went better than I thought. I shared a dr. Eel good and a gun show burrito. Both were tasty and filling. Love the sauce it comes with. I think there was possibly a little too much rice. Price was reasonable. Reason why I didn’t give it 5 stars cause it’s quite a wait to order.

I love burritos… I love sushi… WHYHASTHISNOTEXISTEDEARLIER?! Imagine eating an uncut sushi roll, but slightly bigger. The location is right around the corner from the donut bar, and although parking stinks, you could easily find a spot outside of the lunch hour. My suggestion is the gunshow, but adding both kinds of Misago. Make sure you pour the soy sauce right into it instead of dipping it, since that gets real messy.

Get the fist bump sushi burrito and revel in its greatness. This location has hours that match the nearby businesses. There is another sushi freak location near USD with regular restaurant hours. They also have a punch card system so be sure to ask for one when you go!

I didn’t have a chance to try anything, since they closed at 5pm on a Friday! That’s why they’re getting a one star. Please make sure your info is correct as I circled looking for parking just to go here. So I was understandably disappointed. Sorry.

I have been wanting to try a sushirito since learning about them back in college! Yesterday after work I decided to suck it up and brave the rush hour traffic to get to Sushi Freak downtown before closing just to make it happen. The first thing I should note is that their hours aren’t the greatest. If you are trying to get some Sushi Freak for dinner from the downtown location, you’ll find yourself sushi-less because they close at 5! So I guess they cater more to the lunch/early bird dinner folks like myself. Anywho, I parked a couple of blocks down the street because being a downtown location, you won’t find storefront parking too easily. I made my couple minute walk to the store and looked at the menu. Luckily I was the only person in line, being that it was 4PM. Not really lunch, not really dinner. I ordered the Gunshow Sushi Burrito. While I will agree with a few other posters that there is a ton of rice, I think that’s just the nature of the beast. I don’t think that the sushirito would hold without the amount of rice. That being said it didn’t hold EXTREMELY well. Once you get towards the bottom it does start falling apart. Unlike a traditional burrito, the sushirito does not get wrapped around the bottom so it’s kind of open. The fillings were really good. It was filled well with fresh fish and shrimp. I really enjoyed eating the pickled cucumbers. What I didn’t understand was why they mixed the eel and the spicy mayo together. I ended up with more eel sauce than spicy mayo. I will tell you though the price is right and the food is good. At least try it once. I am already plotting my next trip downtown!

The name says it all: Sushi Burrito– what could go wrong? Actually, I am just here for the sauce and the fact that you can customize your order. It’s the Chipotle of Sushi take out… Oh and if you decide to eat in, rather than take out– get a window seat. The«C» street trolley empties out across the street and the people watching is incredible, truly you don’t want to miss it.

Sushi burrito? More like a big sushi roll with too much rice… Nothing special or cool about the sushi burrito. I was hoping for like more stuff… like fish. While you can definitely customize it and add to your sushi burrito, it will just cost you about $ 1-$ 2 for each additional topping. I got a tuna sushi burrito with jalapeños and cucumber and ponzu sauce. I really thought they were going to drizzle some of that ponzu sauce in the burrito. They give you 3 long slices of tuna. I heard the Linda Vista one is more generous. I’ve had better sushi burritos from actual sushi restaurants, this one was just okay… I think I rather pay the same price for a regular sushi roll, you get more added toppings(fish, veggies, sauces, crazy stuff) instead of a whole lotta rice. Rolls over Burritos any time

This is my favorite lunch spot near my workplace and I don’t think I’ve had a regular roll from here since I met the sushi burrito shortly after they opened. The fistbump is by far the best with extra sauce. There has been only a couple of instances when the seaweed was fairly chewy but that’s what chopsticks are for! Great service, good price and delicious food!

Awesome little sushi spot off 6th n broadway. It was a little slow during lunch hours but guess you can’t rush good sushi. I ordered the Dr. Eel good which was delicious. Sucks I’m not in downtown SD that often I wanna try the other sushi burritos that they have one their menu. Will stop by again next time I’m in downtown SD craving a sushi burrito.

So I am on the fence but the food was tasty. Let’s start with the pros: walking distance to the court house made it very handy when I finally answered my jury duty summons. It was nice service and short line with virtually no wait. The selection ranges from a sushi burrito to sushi rolls or a bowl. I decided to try the fist bump switched up a bit as I am not a fan of cream cheese. Once all the changes were made(minus one they wouldn’t put seaweed salad on my burrito only on the side) the wrap it’s self was pretty good. My only major con with the food was that the unagi was microwaved that kind of threw me. Also forewarning there is no public restroom here so make sure if you are bringing kids or planning to stay and eat that you don’t do it on a full bladder. Other then that it was an average eatery with pretty good bites.

4 ½ stars. I genuinely enjoy this place because of the fast and very professional service. Although I don’t know anyone’s name, the entire staff is always nice and accommodating. The venue is a bit compact and located in an area where a lot of professionals go out to grab lunch. Because of this, there is sometimes a lunch hour line around noon. It’s not that big of a deal as the employees here are pretty fast, but it’s worth noting. I usually get the rainbow roll. Although it’s somewhat pricey, some portions are pretty big. It’s probably the biggest rainbow roll I’ve found so far. Their miso soup is also decent, but their California roll is kinda lacking relative to its price. Ingredients are always fresh and the service is always great. Would recommend.

One of my FAVORITE lunch spots Downtown! CONCEPT Made-to-order sushi rolls and sushirittos. This is the only place I’ve found in San Diego who make Sushi Burritos. Yes I said it. Sushi Burritos. Many non-believers, aka haters, will call them large, uncut sushi rolls. I guess you could say that, but would you ever call a Mexican burrito a large, Mexican, uncut sushi roll? No, because a burrito has certain dimensions, and so, thus, I believe these burrito shaped sushi rolls are correctly called sushirittos, and I love them. SUSHIRITTOS There is a not-so-secret menu for their sushirittos. My favorite is the GUNSHOW because it’s the one that’s got everythang! Shrimp? Yes. Tuna? Yes. Masago? Yes. Salmon? Yes. Crab? Yes. It’s perfection if you like raw fish. Messy and hard to eat? Yes, sure I’ll give you that. But I think it’s a decent value($ 9.95) for its size and the ingredients. I can’t say anything about the other menu items, as I haven’t had anything else but those monstrous rolls of goodness, though my coworkers equally like the regular sized sushi rolls as well. LUNCHTIMECROWDS This specific location tailors itself to the surrounding businesses, so it’s not open past 5. In fact, once I was here a few minutes before 5 and they were already closing. Boooo. So if you want to enjoy this deliciousness at night, go to the Linda Vista/USD location where they have regular restaurant hours. A plus for their other location is that they sell the Hello Kitty wines there! So awesome. Make sure to get a stamp card if you frequent this Sushi Freak! Overall, this is my favorite lunchtime eatery in Downtown since I’ve been working in the area!

Stopped by for lunch and upon entering was greeted by a friendly staff in the small, clean place decorated with cute japenese food and accessories. Aside from sushi, you can buy the popular japanese snacks that you would normally find in a japanese market. I decided to get a sushi burrito To-go and settled on the Eel burrito. The staff their time and didn’t rush as they put together the burrito. The burrito is nicely cut in half and served with pickled cucumber type things and wasabi or/and ginger. Seaweek wrapped around the burrito was a bit tough to bite, kind of chewy, and not as tearable as I hoped and made the burrito fall apart pretty easy. Rice to avocado to eel ratio wasn’t too bad, pretty flavorful! The only thing was that the eel was kind of in chunks throughout the whole burrito and not equally placed. I liked the orange sauce mixed with sweet soy sauce that they provided, as well as the pickled cucumbers. But overall, it was the chewy seaweed that got to me cause it make the burrito fall apart and get really messy. But for a fast food sushi joint, not bad, and I’d come back again at some point.
