Taste of Chicago Grill

Prepare to fall asleep after having a meal here because it is carb-​tastically meaty.
This tiny unknown hole in the way serves up one hell of a good meal. if you are looking for a healthy option, turn around and walk out because this is what you call comfort food.
Italian beef, gyros, lamb everything that screams Chicago city food. I went for the crispy cheese steak sandwich because I have never heard of it yet tried it before. OMG… I am so glad I ordered it. Think, chopped beef mixed with sautéed onions and sweet peppers covered in a layer of melted cheese wrapped up in a tortilla, deep dried, pressed and packaged perfectly!
This thing comes out piping hot too so don’t dive in right away or your going to burn your taste buds. Every bite was crispy as promised down to the last bite! It wasn’t soggy, it didn’t fall apart, it kept everything in tact and on top of that, still kept all the steak juices and cheeses inside.
My group and I had to try out the gangster fries. It’s their version of carne asada fries expect you get to choose from either Italian beef, lamb, beef, chicken and something else. Either way, its layered well in which every crispy fry has sometime on it. As for nacho cheese vs shredded cheese to get that extra saucy texture.

My wife is originally from Chicago, so she was a little skeptical about trying the food at first because there’s nothing like home. Once we tasted our Italian beefs, it was like we were in Chicago all over again. Fries with mild sauce and extra hot peppers, we were in paradise. We found our new favorite spot! Thank you!

Excellent food. Closest to Chicago Style fare you’ll find in and around San Diego, by far! Highly recommend anyone from back home try this place. You’ll not be disappointed.

I have had many things on the menu.
The owner JJ is the absolute best and A GREAT COOK!!! Eats like back in Chicago FRFR! Always clean AND THAT BBQ SAUCE

The wings keep drawing me back in!!! Originally being from Chicago and missing the food, this place gives me the Chicago taste, I want. The owner is always nice, the food is great, I normally call first and by the time I get there my food is hot, fresh, and ready to go.

2^nd time getting take out. The Italian beef sandwich is really good. I might go easier on the peppers next time and get sauce on the side instead of getting sandwich dipped. By the time I got home, bread was soggy but I’d order again. Today I got fried catfish and it needs to be seasoned. Nice size filets
but bland, no flavor at all and the crust was soggy. They need to vent the container to let the steam escape and use some Slap Your Mama seasoning in the cornmeal. Would not order again. Catfish was a one and sandwich was a four, therefore rated it a 3. I think I’ll stick to the sandwiches and leave the fried items alone. Probably try the cheesesteak next.

First time here… I hate people that say chicago style and it tastes like san diego… reminded me of home (chicago duh) I mean he even had mild sauce!!! Only in san diego do they put ranch on chicken and fries… i had a hotdog n fries (with mild sauce of course) had to critique it while in restaurant… I shall return! Two huge thumbs up!

Stopped by in my neighborhood saw a new restaurant and decided to give them a try AMAZING the gangster fries with steak ugh just gave me my life back sooooooo good enough for two people

Just had their bacon cheeseburger w/​fries and a drink for under $ 7.50. One of the best burger’s I’ve had in a long time! Why would anybody go to a fast-​food restaurant for a low quality burger and for more money? I’ve also had their Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches. OMG! Incredible!

Unilocal is pretty sparse in this neck of the woods… Chicago was a bit off the beaten path but 4.5 stars will get me to stretch a bit.
Upon rolling up, I had to check my directions and make sure I was at the right place. I’m not one to judge… I’m just saying I wanted to make sure I was at the right place (if you know what I mean), that’s all.
I digress…
I walked in and it was quiet, aside from a couple of people sitting in a far corner. The owner cheerfully greeted me (other reviewers have reported the same (that goes a looooooong way with me!)) and told me he would be with me in a sec. I looked over the menu and asked the dreaded question, «what’s good?»
Now, a lot can ride on the answer of this question.
If the person says, «EVERYTHING! HE HE!» You know they’re lying, because what’s good to one person is not necessarily good to the next. Fortunately, this was not his answer (phew!).
He paused and said, «that depends on what you like…»
Ok, door’s open, now is when I get the straight dope.
I said, «everything…»
And he defaulted to, «well…the cheesesteak is very popular…»
Fair enough, cheesesteak it is!
He stepped into the kitchen and worked on a few orders at the same time. It came out a little later and was quite delicious. The meat was well seasoned, with a little fewer veggies than I prefer, but was still very tasty. He uses what I think was Kraft singles for the cheese (don’t hate, it was really good with the flavor combination!). The bread though. For being a hole in the wall, such as they are, and getting the bread right, is very cool. Very cool…
Overall, very impressed. I will absolutely be back because there a LOT of other things that I need to try out in this menu. If you’re anywhere near the area, it’s worth a detour. I’m currently coming up with my next excuse why I might need to find myself in this area of town…

Found this place on Unilocal and decided to stop by and try it. Was a little skeptical because of the location but it’s really good. I went a few minutes before they were about to close and they still took my order (props to them).
Their Phillips cheese streak and fries are delicious!

this is the best place you can ever have, the guy who works is awesome and generous as well !!
I recommend you to have the steak cheese sandwich or you can have the chili cheese burger!

This place is very cool. They have the Chicago famous sandwiches, dogs and other good Americano options. Should of went for an Italian beef sandwich or Philly, but buckled once I saw the combo platter of fried catfish, shrimps, chicken wings and fries.
The guy running this place, I assume is the owner, knows his frying skills. The best were the shrimps. A lot larger than you’d expect for this dish and price. Perfectly done and big. The catfish was executed well. The fried chicken had thick crispy casing and complementing and giving a nice range to this plate. Fries were done just right and their cocktail and hot sauce made this dish pop.
Can’t go wrong here for fried food. Need to come back for a Philly, Italian beef and a dog or 2. Nice addition to the neighborhood and a nice mix up for SD.

This place is garbage! Food waaaay over priced! U can’t have nasty ass food being expensive in the hood! This place will not last! Watch!

Great value if you like the tastiest food. Cheese steak sandwiches and chicken wings… perfect. No complaints on this end. If you’re in the neighborhood check them out. The place was clean and had different sauces to choose for fries or whatever. Great Job guys.
