1st time here today and it will not be the last! First of all though, bring cash. It is cash only. We got the pa-nang with beef. It was phenomenal! We also got the duck larb which was pretty good, not worth a second order though. They don’t come with rice so make sure to order some also.

A no frills place with basic Thai staple dishes. My friend and I shared a few plates: Tofu Pad Thai, Papaya Salad, Chicken Curry and sticky rice. I normally like my food on the spicy side, but overall, it was a little more spicer the expected. Perhaps it was the chili flakes that gave it away? The staff was kind enough to adjust the level of spice — so that was nice! Do note that this is a «cash only» establishment, so do be prepared to have cash on hand.

Dropped in for a quick lunch to go and the ladies behind the counter were so kind and patient with me, as I had no idea what I wanted and asked for a menu. I finally decided on the garlic chicken wings and beef larb. The host asked what spicy level and said 3 was medium. I asked for 5 and she made sure to ask me if I liked really spicy food. And I do. And boy, she wasn’t kidding. The larb was delicious and made me sweat, but was perfectly spicy. I can’t wait to go back and try the noodles. They seem Northern Thai, but sadly, no Khao soi on the menu.

Very few places taste as authentic and delicious as Sab E Lee. Our usual family order consists of chicken wings, curry puffs, Panang Curry, pad thai, Chinese broccoli, beef jerky, and the combination fried rice. Growing boys eat a lot.

Ok, so the food at saab e lee is delicious. You all know that. But did you know about their complete and utter inability to calibrate spice level? I can handle… a lot of spice. Tonight? I ordered a papaya salad at a spice level of 2. TWO. Out of ten. You know what? ITBURNTMYFRIKINESOPHAGUS!!! HOLYBALLSDUDES!!! The red curry and the pad thai? Totally perfect at a level 3. Tasted like a level 3. But a level 2 papaya salad? It was spicier than the level 4 we got last time, and literally one of the spiciest things I’ve ever eaten period. Papaya salad is one of my all time favorites, but I seriously don’t think I can risk ordering it here ever again. Thanks a lot, Saab E Lee.

I’ve heard a lot of good feedback regarding Sab E Lee but at the other locations. This is my first time here and I’m glad I tried it out. Unfortunately, Sab-E-Lee did not give me the WOW factor as like other Thai Restaurants. Instead it gave me the«OMG, it’s fricken HOT(spicy)» and I can’t handle it. After reading some reviews(after the fact) I still ordered my dishes like how I normally do with the spice level. My girlfriend and I asked for«3» and we made mention that we don’t want it too spicy(we can ask for hot sauce) but just a little kick. Food: Papaya Salad Panang Chicken Tofu Drunken Noodles The papaya salad originally came out with a lot of red looking flakes. Oh my gosh it was extremely hot where it was punishing rather than enjoying. We had to return it and get it milder. I personally did not like that it had ebi dried shrimp too. The panang actually came out like a normal 3 spice so that was odd since we ordered our dishes all the same. The panang was also good but not the best I’ve had. The drunken noodles were good too. I personally liked the tofu and it’s firmness. Overall, I’d give them another try. To me it was just average and I should’ve tried the pad thai too. Service was alright and nothing that blew me away. This place does get busy so be prepared to wait. TIP: CASHONLY

Great authentic Thai food. I love their many soup selections and various dishes(duck, Penang curry) Also for spice lovers, this place is the place to go. Their dishes can be incredibly spicy. I went through three glasses of water last time I was there. Only downside is its cash only, and that parking lot and establishment are kind of small so expect waits of twenty min if dining during peak dinner times.

This is by far the best place for Pad thai! The chicken pad thai is really good, comes with rice noodles, bean sprouts, carrots, and green onions. Chicken and other meats cost extra. The combination fried rice is also another dish we get here and it is very delicious and filling! We sometimes finish our food with their mango and sticky rice, a serving of sticky rice and mango topped with condensed milk. All in all the food here taste great. We usually eat here on Sundays around noon and they are usually not that busy. Today the waiters always made sure that our water was topped off and that we were doing well with the food. The service is fast and the food gets to us fairly quick as well. There is not any waiting time during the time that we go, so I would recommend going around noon for lunch!

My favorites are the Pad see ew & the mango desert… Wow!!So delicious. Their spring rolls, pad thai and yellow curry are also good options. but the items mentioned above really impressed me. Also, as others mentioned – bring CASH! Hopefully they change this soon, but til then come prepared. Quick service and reliable food. I’ll be back again soon.

Best Thai red curry I’ve ever had. In the world. Including Thailand. Just get it… I’m still in shock how good it was. Also, heads up: this place is Cash Only. Do yourself a favor and stop asking yourself where you want to eat — run, don’t walk to this place to get your Thai fix.

One of my favorite thai restaurants in SD. Can’t go wrong with any dish… Atmosphere and drink selection is not quite good, but the food itself is outstanding. Note. They still don’t take reservation even they moved a bit bigger location, so a big group dinner can be challenging.

Best Thai food I’ve had so far! This place is pretty small and it’s cash only, but everything has really been on point. Parking is plentiful and we haven’t had to wait during dinner time to be seated. There is also a Bank of America ATM in the lot if you need to get cash. Service has always been pretty quick except the curries have always taken a little longer to come out for some reason. Prices are all pretty standard here. Most dishes are in the $ 8 – 10 range. Drunken noodles and red curry are super bomb and have been my favorite so far. They really don’t skimp on the spice at this place, which I love. On my first visit, my fiancé and I had the drunken noodles at a 7, and it was soooo spicy. We were able to eat it, but we were both feeling the burn. The curry here has been like none I’ve ever had. I like how the red curry also comes with eggplant. The red curry sauce is very rich and hearty and my fiancé even took the extra sauce by itself home. The only con here is the curries don’t come with rice, so you pay extra for it. We ordered a 7 and a 9 in the red curry and it was hot but not as hot as the noodles. If you like spicy, you should be able to handle a 9 in the curries, but I’d start with a 5 for the noodles and go up from there. If you aren’t into spicy, I’d recommend a 2 or 1. We’ve also tried the pad thai noodles and the spicy raw beef. Both were also very good, but I still prefer the red curry and drunken noodles. I’ve never had thai spicy raw beef. It tasted like the raw beef version of chicken larb. Very flavorful. It’s definitely worth a try at least once. Overall, Sab-E-Lee is probably our favorite Thai place right now and we’ll definitely be back for more.

I’d like to start this review by sharing this story. There were 2 women dining together, one Asian woman in her late 20’s/early 30’s and a middle-aged Caucasian woman in her mid-late 40’s. It wasn’t some crazy lesbian secret meet up or anything. I believe they were co-workers just catching up but it was just such an awkward interaction. The Asian woman kept talking about how she is single and no one is interested in her and also keeps apologizing because her companion was a vegetarian who wasn’t interested in much at this Thai place. The Caucasian woman was talking about how her favorite food was Mexican but the Asian woman couldn’t fathom that there was any Mexican food that had no meat – talk about living under an awkward rock shelter. Anyway, the kicker is this. The Asian girl starts choking, stands up, the other woman also stands up and tries to do the Heimlich maneuver while calling out if anyone knows how to do it. The maneuver was successful and the Asian woman ends up throwing up her food all over the table, looking like baby vomit. This took place within a span of a 15 seconds and the second after it was over, they sat down like nothing happened and no one in the entire restaurant said/did anything. It was just so weird/awkward. Anyway, I want to give this place 4 stars, but I am giving 3 for the following reason, not because of the story above. I ordered the drunken noodles and didn’t want any spicy but the waitress convinced me to get 2 out of 10 spicy which was too spicy for me. So, I would’ve enjoyed it a lot more if I went for what I originally wanted, no spiciness at all. To make matters worse(this one is my fault) I came in wanting pad thai but got something else because people were raving about it on Unilocal.Shame on me so much since this happened more than a few times in my life. Don’t let this happen to you. More importantly, don’t let nice Thai ladies convince you to get a spiciness level you know you don’t want! The Thai Iced Tea was decent!

HOTNESS Beware! And I mean HOTHOTHOT, lol! I highly suggest not ordering a spicy level above 2 or 3 your first time. Typically I will get 8’s at most places, but sometimes the 4 here will leave my mouth inflamed and burning after a few bites. I’m a creature of habit so I typically get the drunken noodles which are good and one of the curries which are all very good. The curry portion is huge and can easily feed two people by itself. You do need to order a side of rice as the curry does not come with any. Overall I highly recommend them. FYI, they are closed on Mondays and are cash only.

I definitely have had better thai food. Came here to be amazed but instead was unsatisfied. Ive been to the really tiny sabee lee and i thought it was all right and then came to this one almost three years later. Man… Such a let down :(my pad see ew was really soy sauce-y. Yes i know it’s made of soy sauce but it just didnt taste that good. I also tried the chicken wings. They were really small and dry. Eh overall just whatevers probably wouldnt come again. Up’s are– plenty of parking, good service and the candy at the end.

One of my best friends growing up was from Thailand. As a result, I love so many things that are Thai. I love Thai people, Muay Thai(aka Thai kickboxing), Thai style massages, and Thai food! I’ve been hitting up a lot of Thai restaurants lately. Thai food is definitely one of my favorites. I stopped by this place when they were down the street several times, but this is my first time visiting them since they moved to this location. Upon entry, other than noticing how clean and charming this small joint is, you notice the sign up front that says«Cash Only» plastered near the statue at the entrance. There is a Bank of America ATM(near the crosswalk/bus stop on Linda Vista Road) about 15 – 20 yards from the entrance of the restaurant if you forget cash. The staff is friendly. I would have loved to dine in, but had some things to take care of at home, so ordered to go. They greeted me and handed me a menu. After giving me ample time, they took my order. Initially, I felt like ordering curry or noodles. I changed my mind however and decided to order that when I can dine in and actually sit down to enjoy it. I went with other choices so if I couldn’t eat right away, I could reheat the food later on and it would still taste alright. My choices were: Beef Fried Rice and Garlic Pepper Chicken Wings. Food was pretty good. The meat was tender and I liked that the fried rice had a mix of: onions, peas, carrots, green onions, and fried egg. I had to finish up some work at home, so didn’t get to finish all my food, but it still tasted good later on when I reheated it. Today(03⁄24) I had their Chicken Pad Thai and it was pretty good. There was a nice mix of veggies(onions, carrots, fresh bean sprouts), eggs, and crushed peanuts to go with the, more than adequate amount of, noodles and chicken. The lime wedge was a nice addition if you want to add some citrus tang flavor. I love this place. One of the bad things is that it can get packed during peak hours and their dining area is small. So if you come when it is busy, expect a wait. Thai food can be pricy. I believe Appethai’s prices might be a little better. Not sure why, but their patio isn’t being used. They would increase capacity by close to 50% probably if they made it available. 4⁄5 — Food 4⁄5 — Service 4⁄5 — Atmosphere /Cleanliness

EHH. It’s okay. Place is cash only… Seriously? it’s 2016 this place needs to get with the times and start taking card. It’s so inconvenient for people who want to come here but don’t have bills. Yellow Chicken Curry: Tasty. does not come with rice. Plenty left over for doggy bag. Thai Iced Tea: Alright. Con: NOCHICKENSATAY :(I thought this was a staple at Thai restaurants? Honestly, Plumeria in University Heights or Thai Time in Clairemont is a better stop for your Thai food needs.

I’ve been going here since they were at the smaller hole in the wall location across the street. The food still taste just as good and always has an authentic taste to it. I can eat fairly spicy and I think their spice level is the way it should be, medium at 3 and goes up exponentially from there. Depending on what dish I get will determine the spice level as some dishes absorb spice a lot better. For noodle dishes, I would get level 7 spice. Other dishes, especially anything with some kind of sauce or soup, like curry, I’d get level 5. My favorite dishes here are Papaya Salad, Pad Thai, Pad-See_Ewe, Lad Nah, Crab Noodles, Larb, and Green Curry. I usually get duck, but I’m never disappointed in anything I get here. My only gripe here is that it’s cash only. Their Black Mountain location accepts credit cards but this place still doesn’t. It’s still a popular spot, so there can be a line here during busy hours.

The wife read about Sab-E-Lee in one of the small local papers and we decided to give it a go. On entering, about 5:30 p.m. it was not yet busy(but it filled up as we dined). I noted it was quite clean and simply decorated. The walls were covered with black & white photos of Thai Royalty(?) and there were about 13 dining table(no booths). Please do be aware CASHONLY. Between us we ordered the Vegetable and Meat with shrimp($ 10), the Yellow Curry($ 8.50), Fried Rice with chicken($ 8.50), and Fried Pork Ribs($ 7.50). The staff were prompt, friendly, and efficient and it did not take long for our orders to start arriving. The shrimp meal was excellent(loved the sauce), though the serving size was rather small. The rice & chicken was a hearty sized serving but mediocre in taste. The ribs, after getting through the gristle, were okay with a pretty good dipping sauce. Finally, the curry, it had a cloying sweetness that did not sit well with either myself or my wife; she being a BIG fan of curry was really disappointed and combined, we finished less than a quarter of the bowl. Would we return? Maybe, if we happened to be in the area, but we would not go out of our way.

I’ve been coming here for years and I JUST finally tried the garlic crispy wings and my God… my mouth was in heaven! I’m kicking myself for taking this long to finally try it. The wings were beautifully crispy outside and juicy inside. I find that most places don’t put enough garlic in their so-called«garlic crispy wings,» but this place really overloads their wings with garlic in the best way possible. Crunchy, juicy, and flavorful — everything I look for in good wings! Another must-try is their beef boat noodles. I will admit it doesn’t sound appealing when you learn that the broth is beef blood, but trust me, it’s so hearty and delicious! It’s my phở-alternative when I am looking for that extra oomph. It comes with a generous amount of rice noodles, meatballs, tendon, tripe, baby bok choy, and green onions. Ask for the spicy chili oil on the side to give it that extra kick, but use sparingly as it can be super spicy for some. Service has always been great every time I have gone. As I reviewed before, this place is really authentic Thai, especially their spice levels. So, be wary as even level 4 is scorching hot for most people. And lastly, CASHONLY! There is a Bank of America 2 blocks away if needed.

Best Thai food in San Diego. Very authentic and not expensive. Sab-E-Lee is legit. The Good: Like I said, best Thai food in San DIego. Everyrthing I have had form this joint was good and reminded me of the times I’v espent in Chiang Mai. The Bad: Cash only. I used to deduct a star but screw the credit card companies and Uncle Sam anyway. Cash is king baby! The Ugly: The look on my face when the last bite of curry, noodles, and soup are gone. Sab-E-Lee does Thai food right. It’s a dingy little spot with weird rules, but it deserves the accolades.

FIRE!!! That’s the best way to explain their spice level system, everything above a 2 is FIRE! But in a good way, in the way you expect thai food to taste! Aside from them being cash only, this place is awesome! They have two locations very close to each other– literally just down the street. This location is their newer, bigger spot, but same great food from both places. I’ve had their food many times, but never eaten there. Typically we call in our order and the food is ready within 15 minutes for pick up. Very convenient that there is a Bank of America ATM in the parking lot, just in case you forgot to take cash out before. The price is comparable for other thai locations. About $ 8-$ 10 per plate, depending on the type of protein. When the mango sticky rice is in season, you bet I am all over that! Super delicious and a whole lot of mango! My favorite thing to order from here is their pad see ew. I usually get a 1 or 2 spice level, because I am a wimp, but I have ordered a 4 by mistake the first time and my mouth was literally on fire. I prefer to order low to no spice so I can add my own in just in case the chef is extra angry that day ;)

She said: It is important to know — cash only! Really like the curries — don’t go too spicy! They mean it! I can handle mild-to-medium spicy, and I can only handle ~2(out of 10) at Sab-E-Lee. Excellent food, service is great, they have stayed open late for us a few times since we go regularly. It’s part of our regular weekly routine –we are in a Sab-E-Lee rut… He said: A regular for me after basketball games nearby. Their larb is excellent but definitely be wary of the spice levels(rated 1 – 10), they run hot compared to other San Diego Thai places. Curries are all excellent as well as the noodle dishes I’ve had. Thai tea is not great. Overall a very solid place to eat. Pretty consistently good. Always hits the spot when I feel like Thai food.

I came here twice, both times with my little baby Kim, and both times were excellent. Good food and service. Good portion and price = great value. I tried their fried rice, crab noodles, curries, tom yum soup, and catfish larb, and all were great. Packed with flavors. But be careful with the spice level. I tried their 6, and it was quite spicy.

CASHONLY! The original was great, but since changing their location merely a block away, there have been some inconsistencies? — Pad thai is hit or miss. Sometimes I can’t stop myself from licking the plate, while other times there hasn’t been any sauce and the noodles were completely dry(in that situation, I couldn’t finish even my leftovers). — The garlic wings weren’t flavorful for some reason? Just tasted dry and lacked pepper or spice. However, the rest of what I get still keep me coming back: — Pad see ew and drunken noodles are consistently good. — Panang curry. Yes. I usually add extra veggies with my chicken and it’s a creamy, spicy, ricey heaven! The thing that always remains constant is the level of spice! I like my food super spicy, but here I just get a 3(on a scale of 1 – 10). Other places, I’ll usually get a 7 or 8. BEWARE! Still my favorite go-to thai place. It’s larger than their old location, yet still small so seating could be difficult during dinner/lunch rush. However, ordering take-out is always a breeze!

I’m a fan of the Sab-E-Lee family. I’ve been to all three of their locations. I’m really glad the OG of the Sab-E-Lee restaurants decided to upgrade from their hole in the wall establishment down the street. While they’ve upgraded, I’m disappointed that the new venue is still small. Most table tops fit four at most. Not good for big groups, so there will be a wait on most nights. Tonight we ordered panang curry. This is one of the best I’ve tried ever. I really like how it is served with peas, carrots and basil. While the dish looks small, don’t be deceived as a small spoonful packs a huge punch of flavor. My mouth is watering now as I recount this and I’m mad I don’t have any leftovers: p. The next dish we ordered was the tilapia with sweet and sour sauce. The tilapia was fried perfectly. To the point where I wasn’t worried about chewing up and swallowing some of the bones. The sweet and sour sauce, however was lacking. I could have did without it. It was more tart than sweet so it killed my dish. Perhaps I would order this again but not pour the sauce all over. For our appetizer we had the papaya salad level #3. While I like my food spicy, I find that anything above #4 is equivalent to a #7 and up elsewhere. Their spice scale is skewed in my opinion. The service is very good here. Our server was attentive and he took our order quickly and our food arrived shortly after. I’ll be back next time I’m craving Thai.

Sorry to say I didn’t try the food before they moved locations, but from what we got the other night it was a mixed bag. Cash only — obviously, long waits if it’s busy, but quick and easy service if you’re able to get through on their one phone line to place a to-go order. The garlic chicken wings we got were to die for, I was ready to rip someones face off and fight them hunger games styles for the last winnnnngggg. Pad thai noodles were underdone and not very flavorful. Drunken noodles — KILLER. Red curry with beef, meat was a little tough and the sauce was a bit too watery. Cheap prices though. Not sure I’d abandon our fav place for the convenience of this one though. I’m too much of a creature of habit to take my chances on a place where not all the dishes are on point every time.

Minus 2 stars due to cash only and the cashier got some nerve to ask me if I need my change back! Seriously ! Our bill was $ 22 bucks and I gave her $ 40 cash and helllooooooo of course I want my change back… omg! It was awkward ! Anyways we tipped them 18% gratuity the standard tipping percentage for restaurant. Anyways I would’ve gave them 5 stars for foods and all. Until I walk up to pay the tab and the girl at the front counter totally turn my satisfying dinner to a awkward service retrieving my tab and paying with cash. Honestly, the foods here are authentic and cheap! Also… if they are only accepting cash then it might means they are more likely to under report taxable income to the I.R.S ! Anyways back to the customer service. the counter girl was rude and maybe she was having a bad night. But what the hell… she totally makes me feeled awkward, the moment she ask if I want my change back… argh! Enough said I was butt hurt .lol btw she have short hair with bangs and kinda chubby… sorry I am being mean… We will continue to come here for dinner but this establishment needs to improve their customer service especially at the cashier whoever handling the transactions please watch what you say to customers!!! Thanks!

Great take-out Thai place! The food is so good and so spicy. I always order a level 5 here and they always have to ask me if I like it ‘really hot.’ I would say a 5 here is what most places would call an 8. I’ve enjoyed their noodles and curries on numerous occasions. This place is super good and authentic, but it’s also very small. I would not chose to eat here, I only get it to go. If I could rate them on to-go only, it would be 5 stars!

One of the best thai restaurants in SD. I would say that it’s between Banh Thai or here but you can’t go wrong with either. Was going up on Tuesday — to this place of course for dinner because we were eating with a friend who goes to USD, which is down the street. Back to the review. I am not too sure if they relocated from their smaller location or they just expanded, but this place is much larger than the other one. From my past experiences here and like the many others that mention, their spice scale is on the thai scale. So my general rule of thumb is whatever number you say, the spice will be about 5 higher(order a 2 and it will taste like a 7). I, unfortunately, can’t take spicy food well so I usually just say no spicy or if I am adventurous, a 1. I ordered the pad see ew with chicken and my friend got a pork neck dish and a side of sticky rice. One thing I really enjoyed about my plate was that it was extremely flavorful and pretty filling. Though my friend ordered something he wasn’t actually looking for, it was still something he really enjoyed. I also liked how the sticky rice came in a very unique bamboo-like canister. So you could scoop it with your hands. A very pleasant surprise. If you are looking for some delicious and authentic thai food, definitely check out Sab-E-Lee. you won’t regret it!

I think I finally found my sketchy little gem of asian food in SD. Finally!!! (+1) For the amaaaaaazzzzzzing panang curry. I could give this guy like +10, but that wouldn’t really be fair. (+1) For the super duper fast service. I mean they brought us our food in what seemed like 5 minutes. (+1) For the patient wait staff that dealt with our huge party (-1) For having pretty gross boba. The thai tea was great, sweet but not diabetes-inducing. But the boba was sort of hard, flavorless and overall disappointing.(I guess that’s what I get from getting boba at a thai place). (-1) For being cash only and for having a very sketchy«itemized» receipt that did not include any of the name but just prices.(sort of like a calculator tab). Overall, I loved it. Will i be back? HECKTOTHEYES(i just won’t get the boba)

Holy cow guys, this place is really delicious. Wife and I came and had the pad Thai(spice level 5), the duck noodle soup and egg rolls. Service was friendly and attentive for how busy they were. The food though… Wow. First off the egg rolls were just okay. Nice and crisp and not too greasy but the inside was mostly just mushy. The flavor was okay but nothing special. I tried the wife’s pad Thai and it was tasty. Everything was cooked well, nice textures and flavors. We like spicy so maybe could have gone higher than 5 but they say 3 is medium here. Next time we’ll go higher. Now to the duck noodle soup, amazing. Broth had a complex mix of sweet, fatty, and umami(savory) flavors. The fresh scallions and cilantro was a nice contrast. Usually would add some satay or other spice but they just had it so right I couldnt. The duck was very tender and not too fatty. Overall great experience and very reasonable prices. New go to favorite.

CASHONLY $$$$ Great food for a great price. My boyfriend and I stopped by here(we’ve visited the black mountains location before) and wanted to satisfy our Lao food cravings. Warning: the spicy rating here is off. My boyfriend and I ordered all of our dishes a 3⁄10 and it was so spicy. We’ve done this before at the black mountain location but never learn. So I’d say, order a lower rating then what you really want. We should’ve ordered a 1/10, lol. We got: Thai iced tea($ 2.00, $ 3.00 w/boba): it was good, hit the spot. Pad See Ew with Beef($ 7.95): it came with Chinese broccoli, cilantro and carrots. It was very good, 5⁄5 Papaya Salad, Lao style(no peanuts)($ 6.95): the papaya salad here never disappoints me, 5⁄5 Red Curry($ 7.95): probably one of my favorites, comes with eggplant, chicken(or any other meat of your choice), supposed to come with bamboo but we didn’t get any. AND, you get charged for rice. I believe the curry dishes should already come with rice but they charge another $ 1.50 for a bowl. Also, there wasn’t enough chicken in it, 4.5÷5. Service was great, always swung by to check on us. Overall, the food tasted like home and the prices were great too. A must try!
