I love this place ! They have best cosmos! It’s not a fancy a place but definitely has a good vibe. I love that you can hang out, drink good drinks and cook a steak. The baked potato & garlic bread are amazing too. This is a perfect place for date night.

very cool atmosphere, I’ve heard the food is absolutely great, I haven’t had the chance to actually try it though, I went in for some drinks after a solid bike ride with friends. makes it a bit hard being vegetarian but worth a shot to see what they got!

Turf is a cool place. You do cook the meat yourself. I think if you are a newbie, you might be taken back, but it’s simple. Order a burger, steak, chicken, or the salmon(yum), and stick it on the grill. It’s simple and I like the communal effect it has to make people somewhat social. Drinks are a little pricey, but are strong. You won’t get a good old fashioned like you would at El Dorado, but the fruity cocktails might tear you up. I really like the atmosphere, it’s old and dungy, like a classic bar. It seems to keep a good crowd which is always lively. Sometimes it can take some time to get a drink, but if you go in for a little adventure, then it can definitely turn into a fun time. I think it would work great for groups, minus everyone hogging the grill.

If you haven’t been to this restaurant you definitely need to stop by and check it out. It’s a very local hip eclectic friendly bunch of people who are always willing to welcome newbies into the mix. This dining experience is all about socializing with everyone around you so grab a drink order your food and step up to the grill and enjoy. The waiters waitresses bartenders doorman all have great customer service skills very on top of things and very welcoming to everyone. As far as the menu the alcoholic beverages are excellent and the choice of food(surf and turf) is great and depending on your barbecue grill skills your meal can turn out to be the best-ever.

DIY dining at its best. From the outside, the place is pretty unassuming, but inside it’s a 70’s style dive bar with a grill station where you cook your own food. It’s 21 and up, so it’s totally a grown folks situation. Once ID’d and seated, order a nice strong cocktail, craft beer or something simple while you decide what to cook yourself. Now hopefully, you are a person who cooks. If not look up a YouTube video or two, or you’ll just become entertainment for the rest of us. Speaking of entertainment(like what I did there?), there are several nights a week with awesome live entertainment. You can usually catch them on Thursdays or Sundays. But who needs more entertainment when you can watch steaks burning on a grill? Can somebody please get these mf steaks off this mf grill? — Samuel L Jackson… never said.

Just don’t do it. There is literally nothing redeeming about this place. I’ve got in at least 10 times and have had the same experience each and every time. I’ve tried many times to give this place a chance. Setting up the subpar ambiance is a bouncer-like fella checking IDs before you walk into the place. Understandable but take a hint from Starlite or your neighbor Counterpoint. The greeter/host/hostess check IDS here. You need to check IDs but you don’t need to be ghetto about it. You walk to the bar and get absolutely no recognition as the bartender(s) and/or barback walk by you like 5 times. When they do ‘greet ’ you it’s basically a ‘what do you want’? How about offering a menu to start off with? A genuine friendly greeting goes a long way. I won’t bother with the food because the place is literally filled with gross smoke from the grill. Yes, I do understand the concept but how about some adequate ventilation so I don’t smell like a campfire when I get home? The clientele and ultimately friends of the owners(insanely apparent) are local hipsters. Not necessarily an issue but keeping only these people happy is not going to pay your bills. I’ve voiced concern before only to be talked down to. Incredibly unprofessional. If I had to guess, this place is barely keeping the lights on and due to their short-sightedness is not capable of gleening any useful information from this review.

It’s a «cook your meal» type of place. Be it burgers, steaks, or skewers of salmon. The restaurant will give you your protein of choice, and you either cook the meat correctly, perfectly, or overdo it. So if you aren’t good on the grill, learn before coming here or have someone with you that does. It’s one shared communal grill so if it’s a packed night meats will be touching. But with that said, good for small groups. Be prepared to wait for a table as it can be a bit long as people take their time dining and cooking. Prices and portions are decent and burgers are nice and juicy. Drinks are made strong and are decently priced. Atmosphere — hipster divey.

I had considered having a birthday here in recent years past. What ended up being the reason I didn’t was because it was much smaller. Despite this detail, the place is alright for me. The outside of it looks very conspicuous. Gave me the impression that this place has been here for a very long time. I walk in, and it reminded me of a place tough guys frequent. The only thing missing from that whole image was a pool table, which there’s no space for, and also it’s not just a bar. I definitely feel like I did not get a true assessment of this place when I actually did go, but what I did see was pretty fine. I saw a fun atmosphere in a dimly-lit room. Bar scene was booming. They were showing an interesting old movie on their TVs. The grilling part was pretty fun. It was too bad that the lighting was so bad that I couldn’t really see whether my rib-eye was actually cooked or not. If I didn’t/couldn’t eat rare steak, maybe this would have been bad. But by that time of the night, I might have just been absolutely exhausted and hungry that I didn’t have to wait any longer to cook that thing through. Sometimes, even raw meat looks absolutely mouth-watering. I really liked our server. Definitely not for those who require royal treatment, but I absoutely felt comfortable with her. It’s one of the only few fun spaces in that general are besides Counterpoint a few blocks away. Parking is easy to find, even on a Saturday night. Hope you are comfortable with grilling. Otherwise, order something that will be prepared for you.

I love this place. Mostly I go for a drink at the bar with all kinds of fun characters and old timey movies in the background. However, ever now and then I go to eat. The food is great… if you don’t ruin it yourself. It’s a great place to have a great steak, a decent side salad, and some delightful garlic bread. Just don’t overcook your meat!

I have a soft spot in my heart for grill-your-own steak joints, and the Turf Supper Club is the original in San Diego(Riviera came later, and the Cohn’s Strip Club came much later). The steaks are generally inexpensive(all that labor savings, I figure). TSC makes nice, strong cocktails. And the place is open late(I’ve stopped in after a concert at Coors/Cricket/the amphitheater in Chula Vista and still had dinner). The clientele tends to be half tatted hipster and half entitled SDSU students. I’ve been coming here for years… back when wearing Kevlar was advisable in Golden Hill. The prick factor has, unfortunately, slowly ramped up in recent years. But my favorite thing is watching people who have absolutely no clue how to grill attempt to be Michelin Star chefs at the communal grill — they mush their steak down, they cut their steaks open to see if it’s done, etc. I find their poor technique, self assurance and snooty attitude a truly laughable combination. Go ahead, dummy… ruin your steak… your chick is super impressed… you deserve a pat on the back, buddy. Worth the show.

Was torn between a 3 and 4 star, but at the end of it, a raw marinated flank steak that costs $ 16.00 by itself and only comes with a slab of buttered bread that you also grill yourself„ and add $ 4.00 for decent, but not great, potato salad in an alternate hipster universe where some clueless ass grabs the tongs out of my bro’s hands to turn her own steak over a communal grill very much pushed towards the three that was ultimately earned… and even 2 stars was considered… but… Look, I dig that the joint is open late, and is in an interesting part of town. I like the divey-ness vibe of it, the red vinyl booths, and the mostly tatttooed up female clientele, as a former professional tattoo artist and appreciator of the fine female form… but, it is what it is… the steak was decent because I cooked it myself, but we were constantly fighting to keep our spot at the bar, and it’s flipping Tuesday night FFS, don’t the kids have skool tomorrow? There is a reason that I live in the sticks, and it is mostly because if I want to cook a steak myself at 9:00 pm, I’ll go to Von’s, Costco or Whole Foods depending upon where I am at and fire up the barbecue… the drinks are a lot cheaper at my house, and my wife is way more hot than the clientele at TSC… and I don’t have to fight with bums or drunks to have a nice meal. Check it out for yourself and see what you think… like I said, I dig it, but found things to be sort of pissed off about as well, and it will be a long time before I go back.

Want to grill your own food? Season it to your taste buds? Look no further than Turf! Be sure to know that to get in, you have to be 21 and over. You get carded at the door. We arrived at about 9pm and the place was packed. We waited for about 15 minutes before being seated. The interior has a unique ambiance that stayed true since the 60’s. I expected someone to light up a cigar in the corner. I ordered the kabobs, which came with garlic bread. It was SOOO good. It was my first time, so it was hard to figure out at first what sauce was what, or if I just slap it on the grill. Lucky for me, I was with a veteran, and he showed me the ropes. I met another«turf virgin» and we both laughed in each other’s miserable attempts at cooking. It was a fun time. So, you leave the meat to sizzle while you can go back to your seat and mingle. See what I did there? When the meat is almost cooked I suggest slapping your piece of bread since it doesn’t take long for it to toast. With my dinner, I also ordered the Grasshopper which is an infusion of mint, chocolate, and vodka. Superb.

Great ambiance to start… nice and dim, red lights. The drinks are definitely strong. You get to bring them with you as you grill your choice of meat. The entire experience was fun. If you don’t know how to grill your meat to the desired level, I would ask for advice. Would go back if I am in the area again

Many of the men in my life swear by the Turf Club. They speak regularly of their cheap drinks, communal grill and excellent vibe. I was excited to try it, but decided there was no way it was going to live up to the hype. Well, shit son. I was wrong. Believe the hype. If the idea of grilling your own dinner and then eating it in dark, deep red booths like 1960s gangsters appeals to you even a little, you will love this place. Four of us got down for well under $ 200, including steaks, a bottle of wine and lots of extras.

Holy mother of christopher… the accumulation of all art and culture since the creation of fire does not hold a candle to the glorious temple of intoxicated steakery that is Turf Supper Club I feel like some algorithm extracted everything that makes me happy and compiled it into this unearthly marvel… If you have been stumbling around, despondent, aimless, grasping for some evidence that there is some greater meaning, climb off that window ledge, throw back a double whiskey, and slap a steak, on the grill, season… sink into your booth and enjoy. The glorious 50’s wallpaper glowing red against glistening vinyl and well stocked classic bar. The drinks are STRONG, the meat is raw and the staff are a mix of mother teresa, mae west and joan jett. The best of the best. Drink, grill, drink, grill… heaven. I was quite under the spell of distilled spirits, but I do believe I actually asked to be buried here… Best restaurant in San Diego, Earth… hands down.

If you love to grill up your own stuff(and season it the way you like it), Turf Club has got you covered. Whether you’re in the mood for some steak, a nice juicy burger or skewers, there is something tasty for everyone you’re with! And… the drinks here are made extra strong, which is perfect for getting your munchies intensified before you slice into that tasty rare steak of yours! Prices here are damn good for the amount of food you’re getting(though prices have went up a tad bit over the years, you can’t avoid inflation). You’re looking at about $ 20-ish or less for your meal(steak, salad, garlic bread, beverage), which isn’t bad at all in comparison to the other spots in town such as Strip Club, etc. Be sure to keep a close eye on your meats and please don’t be that person who hogs up all the cooking utensils and seasonings. Also, I suggest you cook your garlic bread towards the last couple minutes of cooking your steak because it cooks fast(keep an eye on it as it’ll turn into burnt toast real fast). Do make a note that is a bit dark inside(perfect for you hipsters). And try to come before 7pm as it gets pretty damn packed in here(and it can stay packed even at midnight on any given weekend evening). And try not to burn yourself after knocking back a couple drinks!

If a dark windowless dive bar made sweet sweet love to a steak house this would be its offspring. The Turf Club… the land of the hipsters, their crazy tight pants, and well groomed mustaches! A place you can go grill yourself a sexy steak when you dont have a grill at home, or cant be bothered dealing with your grill at home. Where men bring their women, or women their men, or women their women etc etc(equal rights and all) to gather around the communal grill in the middle of the dinning room. Where they grill their filets, flanks, or skirt steaks all while grunting and drinking a cold beer… as the grill gods intended. Its a fun place to go eat, drink, and be awesome. If you haven’t been its quite an experience and you’ll wonder why you hadn’t gone sooner. I recommend one of their house marinated steaks they’re all served with a big slice of garlic bread that you should also throw on the grill and get nice and crispy… practice those sexy grill marks ya’ll!

This is my go to place when I’m in the mood for a juicy steak and strong drinks. I usually don’t like cooking my own food but there is something about this place that inspires even the laziest cooks(me). First of all, I love the dim lighting and retro décor. The vinyl seats aren’t the most comfortable but with such good food and strong drinks, you quickly forget about the tear on the vinyl seat that is scratching you right on your… well… you get the point. I’ve only had their giant rib eye steak which comes with a big piece of garlic bread. The salad is a good size plain salad. I also love that this place is open late. This place can get pretty crowded on the wkends, so arrive before you’re starving and enjoy a couple drinks at the bar.

Dark, mysterious… just like how like my men. Well, maybe not always, but I dig that the Turf is. It’s got that old school feel and probably why I typically end up ordering a dirty martini at some point in the night. They have a full bar, so basically whatever you’re in the mood for; beer or wine, hard liquor, they got it. What surprised me the most about this place is that the food menu is filled with amazing high quality, yummy, cook-it-yourself grills. OMG, the portobello mushroom. oh wait, the burger. oh wait, the rib eye, oh wait, the filet! Come to think of it, this makes for a great first date spot. Start off by meeting up just for drinks. And if those drinks hit just right and the chemistry is there, the dining area is just over on the other side of the room. Keep that conversation going and those drinks coming as you season and flip over the hot grill. Easy transition, right? Well if not, there’s always the door that’s just a few steps away from the bar anyway. Easy exit, right? ;) Date, friends, solo, for food or just drinks. The Turf is a cool, versatile spot that’s a true Golden Hill gem.

I went to dinner at the Turf Club with friends. The place is very retro and small and quaint and divey, but in a good way. The waitress was fun and had a good personality but was kinda slammed so we didnt get the best attention from her but she was good. The place is super affordable from food, to sides to drinks! My friend ordered a mocktail and it was $ 2.75… that is unheard of anywhere else! The prices are outstanding! I had the chicken kabobs with veggies and their amazing piece of garlic bread they serve every entrée with. I was worried that the kabobs and bread wouldnt fill me up but it was a decent amount of food, the waitress said 8 oz of meat between the two kabobs. The veggies were great, red, green and yellow bell peppers and onions too all marinated with teriyaki. The garlic bread was 1. a decent size 2. had just the right amount of butter and salt 3. was delicious when grilled and even not grilled) 4. I wish I had more garlic bread. I saw one lady spreading blue cheese crumbles on her… not for me, but a suggestion for others. Dessert: they rotate cheesecakes so they dont always have the same ones :) this time they had pumpkin and another, it doesnt matter, cause after I heard pumpkin i was IN! They dont make the cheesecake in-house but get it from a nearby bakery. and the pumpkin cheescake was a 10! The drinks are strong, the food is good, the atmosphere is friendly. I would totally recommend this one and will go back!
