I’ve always been a bit nervous about going to Carlos Club. Finally sucked it up and rolled in on a Friday around 8pm. As my friend and I ordered Modelos, we looked around: lights and banners for Mexican beers strung up all over, tables full of Latino men pounding beers by the bucket, sexy Latina bartenders slinging drinks. The place was blowin’ up. A DJ blared mostly Latin beats through a lone 3 foot-tall speaker. Pool was played in the back cerca de los banos. I wondered how many of the patrons were getting on or off BART. It’s like an airport bar– 30 feet from the terminal– but for BART. –RIP. I finished this review after the bar closed…

Is $ 8 worth it for a well vodka and tonic at 6pm on a weekday? Not at a dumpy bar I’d say. Carlos Club offers hostesses who are ready to take a drink order the minute you walk in the door, faster than your eyes can adjust to the dark interiors. I recommend getting the bottled beers because at least those prices are posted. But in general, I would not recommend the overpriced, underquality drinks here.

OK, I’m impressed with myself for having the balls to walk in here. Granted it was 1PM, but still. This is a working class Mexican bar. I had the lightest skin in there and was the ONLY one speaking English. They had a big stack of clamato cans on display so I decided to order a bloody clam.(haha I just made that name up, but it sounds awesome). They used Absolut and it was $ 8. Eeesh, isn’t that like a zillion pesos? Anyway they at least did it up with salt on the rim of the glass. The bar is adorned with about 10 paintings of naked or partially naked women along with a few crucifixes and portraits of the Virgin Mary. It was pure class.

NOONE in this place speaks English. No one is white, accept me. It’s awesome. A lot of people came up to shake our hands including members of the band. and the waitress kissed us on the cheek. We had a great time. As soon as we finished one beer another was set down in front of us. If you happen to be hearing impaired, it’s just off 24th street Bart station otherwise during the day you’ll probably hear music blaring from the outside speakers. We had a great time and I’m sure I’ll be there tomorrow for Cinco de Mayo.

Right next to the BART station, you can’t miss this little cantina and its exhaltation that«commuters [are] welcome». There’s a patio out back, but I didn’t venture out there to see it. The crowd is just about all Latino. The juke box is filled with Norteno hits. If you don’t speak Spanish you may have trouble ordering at the bar. The regular Mexican beers are available, with a touch of the rare thrown in(I was able to order an Indio).
