Not a bad place to go if you’re in the neighborhood and don’t know where to eat. The place gave off a very soothing and relax vibe. Definitely a plus. The food: I’d go with the Scallop Carpaccio, Pork Belly Ramen or the Crab Croquette. Everything else: uni pasta, shiso sexy, sunflower roll, is passable. Complimentary Ginger chocolate cake and crème brûlée. Awesome. Not bad.

Been to two soft openings at Deep and on our last visit, we tried the food and the whole spread was delicious and excellent. We had the sunflower roll, rice krispy spicy tuna roll, chicken karaage, the Christine roll, marilyn monroe roll w/scallops, the alaskan crab gratinee, glazed pork ribs off the robata grill, red and white maki roll, to name a few… Great place for friends to dine in especially in the back room. Definitely coming back!

I looove this place. Their sushi is delicious and fresh! Great dishes and a few that are a nice change from the ordinary sushi place. And the staff are nice and friendly. Highly recommend it!

I don’t know about everyone else… but i’m the kindda gal that likes the bang for the buck. But this place isn’t it… First off I would to say that the service was great on the pre opening night. Uni Pasta — The presentation is horrible! Reminds me of a bowl of noodles made for a 5 year old. Its basically rice noodles mixed with uni sauce, two small pieces of uni on top and garnished with 4 pieces of peas. So not worth 11 bucks. Did not taste that great either. Serving bowl was really small… Scallop carpaccio — This dish is probably the only dish I liked. Its basically Scallop sashimi with seasoning. Pork belly ramen — This is a small portion for a bowl of ramen. It did taste very flavorful, but is it worth $ 12? I’m not sure, maybe? Shiso sexy — its just hamachi, green onion and topped with tobiki. 6 small pieces. Presentation looks like any other 6 piece roll you get anywhere else. Not worth $ 7… Sunflower roll — shrimp tempura, cucumber, toped with salmon, 1 quail egg, and tobiko. 6 pieces. doesn’t taste like anything special that i cant get anywhere else. $ 11? eh… Crab croquette — just like a crab cake, but Ive had better. Dessert — Ginger chocolate cake and Crème brûlée. Both good and great presentation. Pricing… EXPENSIVE! I spent $ 17/person and we also got a few on the house item maybe because of pre grand opening night, but I was still hungry after… Overall, Deep can’t compete with many other great cheaper sushi place in SF.

I was randomly in Noe and Huuuuungry(that’s what I get for going to a talk by David Lebovitz at Omnivore Books). So the boy checks out Unilocal for where we be, and we settle on Deep. It hasn’t even officially(re)opened yet, and yet the reviews were good, so we decided to take a chance. We got the spicy tuna krispie and the pork belly ramen. The spicy tuna was good, exactly as spicy tuna should be, but nothing revelatory. The«krispy» part seemed to be some krispy crunch rice thing underneath the tuna, which is also good. But together the bite was too big for my mouth, and the ratio was a bit too much krispie to tuna. Not that the amount of tuna was small, just that the krispy part kinda overwhelmed it. Still a tasty dish, tho. The pork belly ramen was fantastic. The broth was rich and complex(almost, can i say it… Deep. *snort*). There was a smoked egg in there(kinda wish there was more than the one, cause it was taaaasty), seaweed, steamed spinach, fish cake, and of course the ramen noodles and tenderly delicious pork belly. God that pork belly was so. good. I’ve had my fair share of ramen, both here in SF and in Japan, and this was def one of the better ones. My boy and I split both those dishes, which was more than enough food because the ramen was huge(as it should be).

Excellent sushi, noodles… everything! The new chef has put together a great selection. 100% quality in each dish that is carefully prepared. The back kitchen staff also comes through with many dishes to choose from.

Disclaimer: The chef is the brother of a close friend, which is maybe why we had such a great dining experience on the Friday evening we dropped by — or maybe not! Deep had me won over with one word: okonomiyaki. I had their version with bacon and was highly satisfied. Hope that they’ll keep this on the menu and try all of the wonderful variations that they do in Japan(yakisoba noodles!) The chicken karaage was some of the best I’ve had — the sauces were a little untraditional but I couldn’t get enough of them. Thumbs up on the tuna sashimi as well… the cubed avocado was a nice touch! I’m going to try the ribs next time, which I’ve heard are the signature item on the menu. Great place to stop for dinner on the way home on the J Church… now if only the J Church would come!

The food was excellent and the service was superb! We were seated in the back since our party was entirely too big for the restaurant. They were very accommodating, even though it was only their soft opening. Bob was our server for the most part and he was a incredibly helpful and cool. All the servers were patient and attentive. The bar looked pretty sweet and I can’t wait to try it out once they have their liquor license. My top dishes: — Tuna sashimi: INCREDIBLYGOOD! Just the right amount of spice and the avocados were perfect. I will be coming back here for more!!! This had to be my most favorite dish of the night. It’s not sashimi per se because the tuna isn’t just sliced up and served to you; it’s a bit like poke, with soy sauce and sesame oil, but not. — Scallop carpaccio: DELICIOUS and fresh! They tasted great with the tomatoes, roe, and umm… leafy greens on top! — Sweet potato fries: Very good. Not your typical fries. It was more like tempura than the normal fries you think of. The spicy mayo dip went great with it. — Duck: We ordered both duck dishes. The duck yakitori and the duck over warm soba noodles. The yakitori was mouth watering and the duck with the noodles was cooked perfectly. Dishes that were good: — Okonomiyaki — Chicken Karaage — Sunflower roll: You have to make sure you break the egg in the middle and spread it around on top of the other rolls, along with the tobiko. I’m sad because I did not get the ribs or the lamb, which are both supposed to be delicious. The dessert sounded interesting as well. But that’s what I’ll be coming back for next time… and there will be a next time! There were 14 people. We ate family style, ordering multiples of a bunch of dishes and between us, we probably ended up ordering over 20 dishes, easy. For the price range, the bill per person wasn’t too bad at all and most, if not all, of us left full and satisfied.

Thanks to Thrillist, we ventured deep into the Noe for a Japanese food adventure. We ordered a big chunk of the pre-opening menu, so here’s the breakdown. Parking was easy. Emailed for reservations so seats were set. Plus, the crowd started arriving around 9, so our seats were hot commodities by the time we were ready to leave. The clear chopsticks are cute. No liquor license until mid-late September, so hold your horses until them. The must tries: Scallop carpaccio($ 9 ) Pork belly ramen($ 12 ) Duck yakitori($ 8 ) The«try if you must»: Shiso sexy($ 7 ) Crab croquette($ 9 ) Sunflower($ 11 ) Skip: Uni pasta($ 9 ) Desserts(comped, thanks to Mark): Ginger chocolate cake( ) Crème brûlée( ) Other worthy notes: Edamame is $ 4. Ours was comped, thanks again to Mark. The co-owners names are Mark and Anthony. Get it? Mark Anthony? Teehee. Cash, Visa or Mastercard. Can’t wait for the official grand opening!

Where do we start? The food is okay but nothing we tried was a stand out. The tuna/avocado dish(can’t remember what it was called) was overly salty and the avocados were barely ripe. The ribs were probably the most memorable of the 6 things we ordered. Pros: 1. Our server was very pleasant. Cons: 1. Service is a bit slow. Our server removed dishes with food still on them(we’re not taking crumbs) without asking if we were done. 2. The didn’t upgrade the chairs from Deep Sushi which are the most uncomfortable chairs we have ever sat in and quite frankly we have no desire to be tortured by these chairs again! 3. No liquor licese yet. Overall it does not feel that Deep is all that different from Deep Sushi. Unfortunately we believe Deep will meet an untimely demise just as Deep Sushi did. Perhaps a more aggressive re-packaging would have been helpful…

I found myself looking for a local sushi option tonight and I was happy to find Deep. Thanks to the earlier reviews, I was able to hop in the car and find this great restaurant. Great place. Check it out. The small location was filled by the time I finished my dinner, including the tables and sushi bar option. When I got there tonight though, there were a few tables open and the bar was clear. Don’t be intimidated. I had the«sunflower roll” — salmon, cucumber, shrimp tempura w/garlic mayo, tobkio & uzura($ 11). It was great. I almost tried the typical spicy tuna but I’m happy I didn’t. The salmon was delicious and I don’t usually love salmon. I’m a pretty boring sushi eater, hence wanting to do spicy tuna($ 7). The organic wild mushroom salad with citrus soy and noissette butter($ 6) was a great light small plate. It’s pretty much all mushrooms though so keep that in mind. It was a perfect balance to the crispy sweet potato fries with spiced aioli($ 5) basically sweet potatoes with tempura batter. They were good. The menu is short, creative and has nice options. I even found an interesting chicken option for my non-sushi eating husband for next time. Definitely try this place! I’ll be back for sure.

Deep, Thanks for re-opening. AND thanks for the new menu! We had a group dinner at the«new and improved» Deep last week. The menu was delightful. I’m used to seeing the regular sushi menu, hardly any Japanese dishes. BUT not this time. The menu has completely changed. Compliments to the chef! The sweet potato tempura fries were delicious, the sushi-amazing, the chicken skewers — fabulous, and that beef and mushroom dish, a homerun. I can’t wait to return! Love, Me

«Deep» is in the space that«Deep Sushi» used to be in on Church Street. It’s undergone significant renovations and has a new owner. I think they dropped the«Sushi» from the name because it’s not focused so much on it anymore. They don’t have a liquor license yet(new owners), so for now it’s BYO. We went there last night for the«soft» opening and it was really good. We figured it might suck given that it was one of their first nights, but the service was fine and the food prepared well and came out pretty quickly. The main difference between this and the old«Deep Sushi» is that they have a bunch more cooked stuff — Robata/Izakaya style stuff + noodle dishes. The rolls we had were good and the tuna sashimi dish was awesome(large cubes of tuna with large cubes of avocado in sesame and soy, kind of a roll deconstructed). The ribs fell off the bone and the duck was awesome. I also thought the lamb chops were excellent. All in all, while it’s a little pricey, this place looks like it has promise under the new owners. We’ll see how they do after the hard opening.
