Happy Donuts

I’ve come here a few times for breakfast sandwiches, donuts and donut holes. It’s about 1 block away from my house and I put it off for about 2 years until recently. The price is right, the ladies who run the shop are nice, and the breakfast sandwiches and donuts are delicious. I haven’t tried the coffee.

Disappointed to learn they don’t bake donuts in-​shop, nor would sell me two dozen because they wouldn’t have enough for the rest of the day. Misleading to call yourself a donut shop if you’re really functioning as a café that happens to sell a donut or two. I don’t like posting negative reviews but would have appreciated this info before I came over to buy donuts for my office this morning.

I’ve never had the donuts.
The sodas are expensive, and the juices are about what you’d expect. I really don’t understand why they close so early. Coke-​product-​only fountain drinks, and the place can be a huge mess or really clean depending on who’s working. There’s one employee who talks on her phone a lot while she’s making change. That’s rude and unprofessional.
I’ve never had the donuts, though, so I don’t think I should drop it to two stars just yet. As the best of them say, «We’ll let you know.»

One of the few places open early on Haight St so we ducked in for a sandwich. We weren’t the only ones for a sandwich but it became obvious that we had better try their donuts too. We bought one pastrami and one Italian with provolone. Both were good. Donuts were good too even if a little odd shaped. We sat in the corner window table and watched the world go by. One drawback is that there are no restrooms here.

I pretty much go here every Sunday. My favorite is the smoked salmon bagel with veggies. The ladies at the counter are always very nice, even very early in the morning. Their donuts are great, too.

This place seriously has the best donuts I have ever tried. I live nearby and often end up going there on weekends. Chocolate glazed donuts are top class. They cost $ 1 each, which is ridiculously cheap for that kind of quality. This place will make me fat :)

Worst business mantra ever. «We can’t sell you a dozen doughnuts» Why I ask while I stand in front of 7 trays of doughnuts «we don’t have enough for the rest of the day». Doughnut shop that won’t sell doughnuts is beyond me.

cruellers out. buttermilk (1.35) not so flavorful. glazed ok. thought about the hot dog (3.5) skipped. concerns about quality.

Ugh I love this place. Every time I’m in the haight I ALWAYS have to stop by here for doughnuts. I arrived my first time around 2 in the afternoon yet their doughnuts tasted so fresh still. They’re also very cheap which is a plus. I mean, does the word «cheap» even exist in San Francisco? Lol
I always stick with the original glazed. Can’t go wrong with that. Unfortunately haven’t been able to try any of their breakfast sandwiches but I’m sure they’re great. Definitely my favorite doughnuts in town.

I stopped in for a pastrami sandwich around 3:30 PM since I hadn’t eaten all day and wanted something quick and cheap. For $ 6, the sandwich (and my bag of chips) was good enough. The woman at the counter almost made me walk out the door — she was unfriendly and seemed incredibly annoyed with me for no good reason. Maybe she was just having a bad day, but it’s unlikely I’ll stop back at Happy Donuts.

Nice to have a spot open early — hard to find in the upper haight.
The donuts are good, standard — nothing extra special.
* Apple fritter — 3.5 stars
This was almost pure sugar! In a good way I suppose. it was very oily. Not too much apple to speak of. But it had a good kind of crisp, was a little hardened. Good to chew through.
* Chocolate cream filled — 3 stars
Very soft. I love cream filled so you can’t really go wrong with this, and if you are a fan this will satisfy you.

I’m not a fan. I didn’t even finish my chocolate buttermilk doughnut. It wasn’t very rich or dense. The texture just didn’t do it for me. I won’t be coming back.

Breakfast bagel sandwich was ok at best, thin sausage patty and decent amount of egg. Coffee is good and prices are fair here.

Only doughnut store in the neighborhood so it’s a neat throwback. But I have to say the only real pro here is that it opens at 6am on the weekdays and 6:30am on weekends. The doughnuts were NOT freshly made when I went in at opening this morning. They must have been at least a day old. And I realize that everything is more expensive there days, but $ 8.75 for six doughnuts? Yikes.

Now i know why they call themselves «Happy Donuts,» get one from there and you will leave HAPPY. :)

Happy Donuts is a place that is just a bit above average — and that is mainly because the place is a bargain. They open nice and early, usually by 7−8am on weekdays — and it’s a great place to grab a well brewed cup of coffee on your way to work. I’ve asked the owner to perhaps start selling whole bean coffee to customers — giving us another option, They promised it’d be considered — but I’m starting to doubt that it’s going to happen.
Happy Donuts is a perfect place to not only grab donuts — but also hot and cold sandwiches. They have a nice cooler stocked with all kinds of drinks — and while it’s cash only — they have a fairly priced ATM right there in the store. Somehow they keep the rift rafts out of the place despite their location, which is an area where the allure of the Haight begins to be taken over by the perennial homeless in the neighborhood. The service is average, don’t expect them to smile or be happy to serve you — but you can expect well made sandwiches and fairly priced pastries and donuts.
I am giving it 4 stars because as a Haight resident — I can tell you that we need a place like this. Just like Power to the People Coffee on Masonic — it’s worth the few block walk if you don’t live near Schrader and Haight. The menu and probably awfully unhealthy donuts are a great addition to the hood. It would be a tragic loss if this place closed — so please support this locally owned business.

THE most glum looking cashier I’ve ever seen. NOT happy to see or serve. The bear claw was actually decent but the place is so depressing with this sad-​sack person behind the counter…
Maybe she’s on a sugar low or something but I suggest she should go to one of those Bong places down the street and figure out how to use it and get at least pleasant, if not happy! I mean you are serving DONUTS for Gods sake.
And their selection is a bit limited. So there are many other really HAPPY donut places in SF: why go here?

I like irony as much as the next guy, but do the employees here have to be so morose? I know the place is «Happy Doughnuts» not «Happy employees», but damn!
And as far as the doughnuts go… the name of this establishment only works if Happy is a synonym for mediocre.

You’ve seen one donut, you’ve seen them all. I just don’t like to see them on my hips and ass.

So, I can’t comment on the donuts. .. But, the BF liked his plain cake donut just fine. I had a bagel with cream cheese — again, it was a typical bagel with typical cream cheese.
I didn’t really see any happy donuts or happy people in the place, but I was happy that my bagel was toasted.
I was not happy about spilling my coffee — and, yes I’m going to blame them — not my usual lack of grace.. . because the coffee area is just odd.
They have glass coffee pots on burners on one counter, carafes at the other counter, and the coffee condiments at another. Damn! It’s too early in the morning to have stumble around here and there for my coffee.
Wait. I did see some happy doggies getting walked by people, who should have slept in. .. there’s some good people watching to be had if you sit near the front window.. . and, that kinda made me happy.
