Hole in the wall during lunch hours. Had the CHICAGO«STYLE» DOG. The sport peppers gave it a nice kick. The quality of the meat & veggies aren’t too bad. Would have been better if the meat quality was a bit higher. Basic condiments.

I love french fries so I decided to check out this place when a co-worker told me about how great their fries are. And they are indeed delicious, The guy handed them to me fresh from the fryer. Not too salty either. I also ordered a Giants dog which is literally a large hot dog with onions on it. I waited 5 minutes max for my order and I was on my way.

Nothing special. It’s just a typical hotdog that you can order with fries. Fries were not fresh at all, but they did give a lot.

This What’s Up Dog location is the definition of a hole in the wall. It’s a small window place inside an alley that makes some good and fast hotdogs. In 5 minutes or less, you’ll have your hot dog piping hot and ready to go. There’s ketchup and other condiments near the window. Napkins and other stuff can be found there also. Great standard issue hotdogs at affordable prices especially in the FiDi neighborhood. They’re lackluster hotdogs, but $ 5 bucks here brings quite a lot of food. If you’re looking for a cheap and quick lunch, this is the place to go.

I’ve passed by this place many times and have always been curious about What’s Up Dog in general. Finally decided to treat myself to a nicely unhealthy lunch. Had the chicago style veggie dog. Holy sh! t! Now, I generally like really salty food, but good grief, this was the most incredibly salty salt lick I’ve ever tasted, literally burning my lips after the first bite. I just couldn’t finish it. For the hot dog itself, one star for presentation. Zero for taste. I’m sure my veggie dog was just an aberrant outlier. All their other dogs can’t possibly be this bad. However, service was really friendly so overall 3 stars.

Did I give What’s Up Dog five stars because its a fabulous gourmet meal? No. But in the realm of fast, affordable lunches WUD is kind! They have a variety of dogs(hot dogs, sausages, etc) and toppings to choose from AND make amazing fries. For less than three bucks you get a pile of hot, crispy, salty goodness! What really makes this place five stars though is the service! The people that work inside that little hot dog booth are very friendly and fast. I also have a personal WUD anecdote I would like to share. Last time I went their for my chicken apple sausage + fries lunch the woman in front of me ordered a bacon dog and asked how much it was. It came out to $ 5.50 but all she had on her was a $ 5. She changed her order to a plain dog but when the cashier realized why she changed her order, he told her she could still have the bacon dog for $ 5 if she wanted. Yes, I know forgiving a 50 cent difference in price doesn’t make him Mother Teresa, but i thought it was very nice of him. I offered the 50 cents to make up the difference but he wouldn’t take it, so I put it in the top jar. Moral of the story is if you are looking for a tasty, cheap lunch with A+ service, stop by What’s Up Dog!

My first visit to this place… I’ve only passed by it 100 times in recent years. Dog = good. ½ all beef hot dog for $ 3.99(Giants Dog) Next time, I’ll have to spring for the NY dog!(I haven’t had one of those in a very, very long time!!!) Fries = good(Under $ 3.00 for this ginormous bag of hot and crispy fries) They accept plastic but there’s a 50-cent transaction fee. Just give ‘em cash, if you have it. Service = friendly. Overall…I’ll be back if I want a dog-and-fries kinda lunch!

This is my favorite guilty pleasure. The chicken linguica is great, and this guy knows how to cook fries. He always apologizes because I have to wait a few minutes for them, but that’s because he does it right! There are lots of outdoor tables in this little plaza off Bush St., a perfect place to escape our crazy office for half an hour, and a lot less expensive than Bistro Burger.

I try to not eat mystery meat, but hey I was hungry. Nice mid-corner find. Pounded down a chili cheese dog It was meaty and beany. It was satisfying, but I’ve had much better(NYC, chi-town).

Always pass this place on my way up bush. Decided to stop by for lunch with a friend whose favorite food of all time is hotdogs. We ordered the chili cheese hotdog and apple chicken dog with chili cheese fries. I don’t know if it’s the watery chili that tastes worse than canned chili bug the dog itself had a really weird taste and didn’t sit very well in my friends stomach. The nasty chili masked the perfect sized and seasoned fries. Definitely pass on anything with the chili there. However, the apple chicken dog was solid. Nothing to write home to mom about but nothing to complain about. Overall, paying $ 4 for a mediocre hotdog isn’t worth it. Nor is it worth having an upset stomach from watery chili.

Great hot dogs, which is something you won’t find me saying too often. Usually, hot dogs are a last resort sort of food, a bland staple at movie theaters, gas stations, and ballparks. One buys a hot dog because that is the only food in the vicinity. One does not seek out a hot dog store specifically to eat hot dogs. But that is exactly what I did for lunch today, and might I say… time well spent! The hot dogs are excellent, much better than I’ve had just about anywhere. I am not 100% sure how their pricing works. 2 What’s Up Dogs(the basic 8″ hot dogs) are $ 6.00, supposedly, and then adding chips(and a drink?) is $ 1.25. Yet somehow I was charged $ 7.95. I’m not sure if that’s a mistake on the cashier’s part or I read the menu wrong. I think I would love this place even more if was a full restaurant rather than a little stand with only outdoor seating. While some may write it off as an advertising gimmick, there really was a «snap» to these hot dogs. A great place for lunch, though with their cash-only policy, I’ll probably still go to McDonald’s, Working Girl’s Café, or Subway because I don’t feel comfortable carrying cash.

Living in San Francisco has warped my perception of the word«summer.» In Orange County, «summer» means disgustingly hot weather(actually, the hot weather really is year-round, thank you global warming). It means going to the beach, wearing bikinis, and being extremely tanned naturally, not the Jersey Shore way. In San Francisco, «summer» means BUSTOUTYOURWOOLCOATSBECAUSE, WTF, WHYDID I THINKTHATTHESUNSHINEMEANTWARMWEATHER?! It also means that I don’t have to wiggle my way into a bikini, so BRINGONTHEJUNKFOOD. Normally I have a lot of self-control when it comes to eating. I don’t eat many sweets, I never eat junk food in general(chips, etc.) and my lunches consist of soups or salads. But, as many of you know, chili cheese fries are a severe weakness, and pretty much the only«junk» food I really eat. After mentioning to my coworker that I’d gone to OTG on Friday and had a bacon-wrapped dog, she was like, that’s what we’re going to have right now, and where can we get this?! I mentioned seeing a WUD on Bush, even though I’d never been(I’m not a huge hot dog fan), and we marched straight over in search of this culinary heart attack. If you don’t know anything about hot dogs, this can be overwhelming. Chicago dog, North Beach dog, bacon dog. yeah. They have only brief descriptions of most of them, but they do have pictures towards the bottom of the stand. They also have a variety of sides, like cheddar bacon fries and chili cheese nachos. Of course I had to have chili cheese fries. Of course. Because I knew that JUST a hot dog wouldn’t cut it for me, and I would spend the rest of my afternoon regretting the decision to NOT get fries. So, of course I got them. The dog itself(the big one for $ 3.75) was just meh. Honestly, I’d prefer Costco hot dogs. The bun was really soft and flimsy, and the onions(I added them on myself) were almost too sweet for my liking. The beef dog was a little tough and had a strange sweet taste to it. Let’s get to the good part: the chili cheese fries. Lots of chili. Lots of that delicious fake cheese sauce. If it’s yellow and gooey and tastes remotely like cheese, I don’t judge. It was delicious. Warning: you’ll need a fork. And you’ll need a long jog around the block later. It’s cool though. It’s only July. It’s not bikini season here yet.

I ordered the garlic fries(even after my friend had warned me about going to work after with garlic breath) and a chicago dog? Both were good. but I especially enjoyed the fries since I love frites! It was topped with bits of real garlic and yummy. It’s worth the trek to fidi and one day I will come back.

Pretty good for a hot dog stand. I ordered the Louisiana Hot Link for $ 4($ 3.75 plus tax). The hot dog was warm and had a nice«snap”/ crunch to it. It’s a pretty cheap lunch for FiDi standards; however, I had to swing by Mickey D’s for some fries on the way back to the office because I didn’t feel quite full. FYI: Order 2 what’s up dogs for $ 6(normally $ 3.25 each).

Had a chili cheese dog here for lunch just before giving blood across the street. The dog had great snap, as any superior hot dog should. The cheese was liquid nacho cheese and all fell off in a big wet clump as soon as I picked up the chili dog. After two bites, the bun disintegrated and I was forced to finish my dog with a fork. A small travesty.

What’s Up Dog? has great service and great food! I have gotten both their veggie dog, which comes in two different varieties, and the garlic fries. Though the garlic fries don’t beat Gilroy’s, they are still fantastic. The veggie dogs are delicious, but make sure you go early for lunch, because sometimes, they run out.

This centrally located hot dog window is popular with FiDi office workers. It’s store #3 of the local WU Dog chain. Now the only FiDi branch, since store #2(on Mills Place, across the street from Diller’s) closed a long time ago. Similarly to store #1, there’s no place to hide on rainy days. And one of the few locations that has french fries. It’s a great little spot facing Escape from NY Pizza(on my regular lunch rotation). In the past I’d usually buy a Bratwurst, or a Calabrese or the lemon chicken. But the quality of those gourmet sausages is no longer as good as before. Also they recently switched from baguettes(I liked this better) to regular hot dog buns(cheap). So now, for me the best choices are the regular hot dog or the Big Dog. Another excellent choice are the french fries. Highly recommended! The pastrami sandwich(choice of cheddar or provolone cheese melted on top) is only okay, the strips of meat are a bit chewy. Cash only. Hours: Mon-Fri 9:30am — 3pm(Fridays until 4:30pm) Closed weekends.

Who doesn’t love leftover animal clippings in a hands-on phallic shape? Though this stand touts New York and Chicago style hot dogs, just bypass them to avoid disappointment because they are not going to be as good as the real deal. Instead, enjoy the wide variety of meat mixture dogs and toppings(they even have pastrami!). Some of the more unique ingredients salvage this place at a solid A-OK. Chicago«Style» Dog: The«Chicago» should really be in quotes, not the«Style». No poppy seeds on the roll. The pickle was kind of sweet instead of a tart dill. The dog is grilled instead of being boiled or steamed. As a dressed up dog, it’s nice but totally fails as a Chicago dog. New Orleans Dog: The green olive tapenade(a.k.a. muffaletta spread) caught my attention. Never had it on a hot dog before and sure liked it! It adds a nice bitterness to offset the fatty dog, no other condiments necessary. Bacon Cheese Fries: Mad props for using real bacon chopped into bits since I hate that red colored bacon-esqe product from a jar. Using bacon instead of chili also protected the structural integrity of the fries avoiding instant soggification. The fries were thin and satisfactory. The cheese product did the job.
