I like this place. Taste better now with the new chef/owner. Saliva chicken sauce is nice. Best I have tried around, both san gabriel area and rowland heights area. Of course the best I have tried is in chung king on garfield and garvey when the very first owner was still there. Now that it has changed hands a few times, I can’t find that taste anymore. Normally lazy to write review, but want them to be in business so I can continue eating here: p Update – nvm. They just told me they are closing in a few days… sad…

what happened to the old chung king? this place isn’t bad but, if you knew what it used to be you’d be sad to see what it’s become. it seems to me like the chef left and took his or her recipes with. Same titles for the food, more or less, different versions for most. Not all bad, but not what chung king used to be. wish someone could explain to me what happened.

Rounding my experience up from 3.5 stars. I first stopped by here just to try a couple of dishes when I noticed that the signage in Chinese changed, but the English name remained. I was curious as to whether or not the restaurant had changed hands, and they did. During my first visit, I tried the Kung Pao Chicken and the Boiled Fish in Chili Oil. The chicken was good, but it was not spicy at all, and the vinegar was a bit overwhelming. The boiled fish had good flavor and was spicy. So, I decided to come back a week later with friends to try out more dishes such as the Cheng Du BBQ Lamb, spicy jumbo shrimp, eggplant with garlic sauce, stir fried green beans, boiled fish in chili oil, and stir fried potatoes in vinegar. Best dish of the night was probably the spicy jumbo shrimp — it was flavorful with just the right amount of spicyness. Giant plate is ½ dried red chilis and the other half with about a dozen plump shrimp. The boiled fish in chili oil was a disappointment this time as it was too salty. The Cheng Du BBQ Lamb had good flavor but it was overcooked so the meat was quite chewy and somewhat dried out. The Stir fried Potatoes in Vinegar had not seasoning at all. You can’t taste or smell any use of vinegar in the dish. The green beans and the eggplant were safe dishes, and both were quite tasty. Service is decent as the 2 waitresses spoke English and were quite attentative. Cash, MC and Visa only.

This was formerly Chung King and it has changed over to hipper name of Image Chengdu. The undeserved popularity and success of Chengdu Taste has certainly spurned interest in opening new places or try to transform stuffy old places into a make over new Chengdu venue. The place looks the same but the menu has changed to reflect the name change. Not impressed with the overall taste. It is not bad but it isn’t great either. Unfortunately this falls below my top 4 best Szechuan places that suits my taste. My personal greatest Szechuan discoveries in SGV 1. Cui Hua Lou, 2. Spicy City, 3. Chuan Ren Bai Wei 4. Szechuan Impressions(Tasty but lots of msg) Not on my return list. 5. Chongqing Restaurant 6. Image Cheng Du 7. Chengdu Taste(Reviewed by Johnathan Gold, mopped by the masses) 8. Hoalala 9.
