These gorditas were sooo good, you wouldn’t even miss that there was no meat in them. We’ve spent all year trying to look for where this truck went. Do share if you know!

When my cousin told me there was a vegetarian taco truck in San Jose, I was immediately intrigued(a.k.a. harassed her with questions and pleas for more info). It’s not that there are a lack of veg places in San Jose or that there is a lack of taco trucks in general. Even Melissa ran a vegan food truck in New Jersey for awhile last year. They’re all the craze. I think the root of my excitement lies in the combination of 3 factors: veg taco truck + near my house + supreme master! Every time I learn something new about the supreme master, I get this oddly enjoyable excitement. I have no idea where it comes from, because I definitely think she’s crazy and always try to sit in the seat that is not facing the televised propaganda when I eat at her establishments(I know your next question is if the taco truck has the flat screen and sorry to disappoint – or in my case reassure). I got the same excitement when we went to the supreme master Italian restaurant in Vancouver(maybe it’s when the supreme master branches out into non-asian cuisine that sparks my excitability). Anywho, when I arrived to find that the menu was all in Spanish, I probably looked like the lovechild of a deer in the headlights and a lost puppy dog. Luckily, there was a super nice and helpful gentleman who spoke English and went over the menu with us. They, of course, kept calling everything chicken and steak so I had to verify. All of the meats are vegan, but they use real cheese, so I just made sure to ask for no cheese on my order. I’m normally a food racist and order the safest thing on every menu so as to not take any unnecessary risks with my meals. However, somehow I was persuaded by the kind man who was explaining the menu to me and Douglas’(horrible) suggestion that we order EIGHT gorditas, assuming it was their specialty, and therefore is probably the best item on the menu. We got 3 varieties: chicken, steak, and mushroom. While we waited for our food to be ready, they have clean tables to sit at under a tent that is well lit and stocked with what tasted like homemade tortilla chips and 2 varieties of homemade salsa – both of which were delicious. Most(cultured) people probably know what gorditas are and therefore would not have been surprised when their order arrived. Unfortunately, I am not one of those people and so when I bit into my first gordita and the force of my bite actually caused oil to ring out from the corn encasing and drip into my bowl, I knew I wasn’t in Kansas(Sunnyvale) anymore. At that point, I could have ordered something else more healthy, but I figured when in Rome(San Jose), do as they do, and I proceeded to eat 3 of them. The chicken ones were the best, by far. I basically passed out the second I got home(okay okay, we made vegan pop tarts first) because I don’t think my body is used to eating food that I consider to be a part of the SAD(standard american diet). So, if you are used to eating SAD foods, then go here and order gorditas. Otherwise, try the burrito or some other menu item that I will be trying next time I go.

Wife(vegan) and I tried this place this afternoon… Food(tacos/burrito) was okay for me(not a vegan nor vegetarian but love the food)…However, they(the order takers) mentioned the food was«vegan». This is NOT the case and could be very dangerous for some folks who can be very critically emotional when it comes to food relating to animals or anyone with food allergies. We asked to see the«soy product» packaging from«Indonesia» They did not have any packaging to show us… They told us it consisted of vegetables, milk and eggs. Whoops. Bottom line, don’t say you serve«vegan» when it is not vegan. Huge difference from vegetarian to vegan.
