I was seeking some camote(sweet potato) empanadas and I found them at both Ortiz Panaderia and at the Pink Elephant Bakery. While the empanadas from Ortiz Panaderia were good, they were not stellar and I actually preferred the ones from the Pink Elephant. I wished the camote empanadas didn’t have chunks of camote, but rather, had a smooth camote filling like the ones from the Pink Elephant Bakery. I am not sure if a smoother filling is traditional, but I simply prefer it. Yes, I am an empanada SNOB! I really loved the little cake I tried that had a savory and slightly sweet cheese filling! It was delish! The cake itself was not too sweet and it tasted similar to cornbread! Yum! I will definitely head back to Ortiz Panaderia when I am craving this particular cake and to try their Salvadorian quesadilla as well as their Conchas! When I went, there were 2 very helpful women working, but neither of them spoke English. Just a heads up…

The pan dulce is great in this place. The quality seems a little higher than other places in the area. Prices are also a little higher. Expect to pay $.60 or more for there pastries. Most places start at only $.40. But again the quality is better so I am willing to pay higher. They also sell tacos and tamales. The tamales($ 1.50 each) I had seemed to be a couple days old. They don’t seem to sell huge quantities of tamales so that was expected. I will be ordering a dozen or two for the holidays hoping for better luck.

I love Ortiz Panaderia! I went here one morning to grab myself some pan dulce. I was pretty hungry and was ecstatic when I saw they had tamales on their menu. The tamales are very reasonably priced, one tamale goes for $ 1.50 and comes w/salsa on the side. One bite and it was like love at first sight! Haha. I ordered a chicken tamale and it was absolutely delicious! It was so heavenly and went well with my fruit punch Jarritos drink. Pan dulce for dessert was also AMAZING. They have excellent customer service too, we know that is always a plus. They don’t take plastic, so make sure to have some moolah on ya. ATM located inside the panaderia and also a credit union next door.

Pan dulce and cakes are to die for. Love the display of pan dulce and available confections in the refrigerator. Also love the custom cakes you can get from here. So delicious! Lots of drinks to chose from including hot coffee and milk/orange juice. There is an ATM machine in the corner, good parking lots, and friendly bilingual staff. Go here for your next breakfast treat or special cake order!

This bakery is new, in a new building near the intersection of McKee and White. I wanted to buy tamales for the holidays and usually go to Lucy’s, down the road, but I decided to stop in and try the ones from Ortiz Panaderia. They were delicious! You need to order ahead during the holidays because I went in a couple of times and was only able to purchase a few because of the pre-sold orders. And, they were only $ 1.50 each. I’m sure that will change as people discover this little gem. It’s clean and the people are very friendly. They have lots of beautiful looking pasteries and cakes but I didn’t try any this time.
