as a child, i used to take ice skating lessons and practice at the indoor rink near my house every weekend. and every four years, when the winter olympics took place, i had my eyes glued to the tv while the figure skaters glided across the ice, battling for a gold medal. i hadn’t actually been to a live ice show since i was a teenager, and back then, they called it the«ice capades,» so the memories weren’t fresh in my mind, but i remember always leaving a happy customer and wanting to go back again. my trip to the sap pavilion in downtown san jose last weekend was no different, as i turned into a giddy girl once the show started. the skaters have definitely changed since my last live show, and the music is quite different, but the entertainment value remains very high. thanks to new technologies, the overall presentation and special effects are better than they used to be. the stars of this show, without a doubt, were meryl davis and charlie white, fresh off their gold medal winning ice dance performance at the sochi winter olympics 3 months ago. they kicked off the show with a bnef introduction and dedicated the performance to their mothers, and all the mothers in attendance since it was mothers’ day. meryl and charlie actually skated their gold medal winning free dance toward the end of the show, which was a special treat. they are truly a delightful pair to watch, exuding so much passion with every turn, lift, and move in their performance. i can see why they won gold at the olympics, despite a competitive roster of athletes. other notable performers included ashley wagner, jeremy abbott, and gracie gold. there was a nice mix of singles and pairs performers, as well as a few group numbers. i have to say, i’m quite impressed by how quickly the skaters change from one costume to the next! there was one performer, forgot his name already, who did a few backflips on the ice which was very impressive. and another performer landed a quadruple jump, which again, was very impressive, considering this wasn’t a judged event(typically, these jumps would only be seen in competition). i enjoyed every moment of the show and could have easily sat in my seat for a couple more hours, mesmerized by the power and grace of these gifted men and women on ice. if you enjoy watching figure skating, you will absolutely love this show. to order tickets for next year’s show, check out their website:
