These guys rock. It feels like they are under new management. I don’t know how long ago that change has occurred. We have eaten there in the past and clearly not enjoyed it. We heard they had made some changes and tried it again this weekend. We loved it. The green beans were great. I also enjoyed the egg foo young. Kids loved the snap peas. Overall a great meal. I thought it was a little expensive and the store front is nothing to look at. Looking forward to trying more on their menu.

We get take out here at least once a month. We love the garlic chicken and green beans and their fried rice is pretty good(a little less fried than other places). We also enjoy their broccoli beef, orange chicken, chow mein, and potstickers. The people who work there are super friendly and provide good service. We always get the food to go. I am pretty sure they are closed on Monday. It’s way in the corner past PW Market.

This place is under a 2nd ownership run after originally called Nam’s back starting in 1978. Back when it first started they used cheap grades of beef but over the decades improved to be tolerable. They sold to new ownership– whom both styles were a bit different from the original. I liked the original cantonese/mandarin influences. I ordered the kung pao and it was too spicy!!! I mean they over did it and it makes me wonder what are they doing back there? The beef chow fun was OK– a bit flavorless– or not enough soy sauce. Egg roll was frozen I believe so it was average. I would try again, partly cause there are no other places this deep into the almaden area, but it definitely needs to try a bit harder.

My aunt wanted to get some take-out on a Sunday evening and she had heard about the newly opened Uncle Chef from a friend. It’s in the plaza at the corner of Almaden and Via Valiente and is very non-descript, without even a sign on the overhang. The inside is very bare bones, and while there are 4 or 5 tables, I’m not sure why anyone would want to eat there. With all the Asian families in Almaden, however, they probably are doing fairly well with their take-out. The food is fairly cheap and fairly good, though some miss the mark. The salt & pepper fish and the Singapore rice noodle(mi fen) were both pretty good, though the shrimps in the rice noodle were very mushy without any Q-ness in the meat. The chicken and mushrooms was ok, but was more mushrooms than chicken. My main issue with the braised tofu(hong shao) was that the tofu wasn’t braised(hong shao) in the traditional way. Rather, it was like someone took a container of store-bought tofu, just dumped it on top of some vegetables, poured some sauce on it and called it a day. On a minor note, like the chicken and mushrooms, most of the dish was vegetables as opposed to tofu. In review, it might be worth a stop by to pick up dinner if you live in the area, but I certainly wouldn’t trek all the way to Almaden just to come here.
