Great place if you’re in to Saki bombs on your 21st birthday. Stay away if you’re a family or looking for a date night. My family and I waited and waited for our waiter to take our order, bring our drinks and food. Meanwhile, a large party of college students that came in after us was immediately served round after round while loudly shouting and pounding the table. My children were literally scared and we never received all of our mediocre sushi. I think the place changed hands about a year ago and they made it clear they are more interested in selling saki than sushi. Obnoxious guests, but the management did nothing but encourage the behavior while leaving the rest of the patrons wondering if they would ever get someone to take their order. I agree with other reviewers– Goshi is waaaaay better

The food here is fantastic. The 2 chefs have worked a loo oolong time and know how to make REAL sushi. I ordered the Westmoreland Roll and my GF ordered the Morro Bay roll. Both were super delicious. Just the right amount of sauce. We love that the owner Young came out and asked us how everything was. He was very concerned about our service. This place just switched owners and he wanted to make sure we were getting the best service. I was very happy with the value of money vs food and their sake is fantastic.

I gave 4 stars because of the service. The food is okay. I mean it’s good enough to get your sushi fix with the price point. Don’t have high expectations, and you won’t be disappointed.

I used to frequent Sumo sushi when I was in college, but haven’t been here in years. While they do seem to cater to a younger college crowd, it was altogether a great sushi experience! We ordered the sashimi combination, fresh delicious sashimi, and the Sunfire role was amazing! The service was perfect, I will definitely be bringing sumo back into the rotation.

I wanted to give 2 stars but couldn’t bring myself to do it cause our server seemed like a cool guy… The ambiance left much to be desired, in a fast food in a mall kind of way, not a hole in the wall sushi way. The fish was mediocre at best and the presentation looked like the time I tried to make a California Roll at home with no instructions. The hallway to the bathroom was dirty, the roll holder was broken(among other things)…plus it was noticeably warm in there, which is a little off putting and honestly I am worried about how I’m going to feel in a couple hours. The people giving 5 stars either got the A team(which I clearly didn’t), or have no standards. I have had better sushi from Pavilions… I’m mostly upset because it wasn’t even budget. For $ 5 more I could have had Sugarfish… Do not recommend this place. If Goshi is closed, just hit a pub and put off sushi night…

It was in many places. To taste everything, but this is my favorite for today! Fresh seafood and very large portions … and yes, I strongly advise Pink Lady roll:)

I am not going to mince words; Goshi is better. Sumo is — on average — 40−50% the cost of Goshi with no wait times. That carries a ton of value for me! Being able to go have a good, fast sushi lunch for under $ 20 is awesome. The fish is fresh, and the chefs are good. This is a true hole in the wall — if you want date night ambiance, you may be disappointed. I am on the fence about 4 or 5 stars for them, as the quality has been a bit more rocky lately during their change of ownership. That said, I have faith that they’ll work out these *minor* kinks and be back to full speed soon.

Friendly sushi guys and wait staff. We ordered the Tiger, Crunchy, Red on Red, Spider and Westmoreland. All excellent. We like sauce and they definitely decorate the sushi. Would come back and recommend. Strip center sushi inland… do not let that fool you!

One of the best sushi spots in SLO! Had the Katsu Don and it was bursting with good flavors. Definitely recommend!

Amazing food! Had the lava roll spider roll, salmon and mango, salmon salad, and tempura ice cream. Every thing was very fresh and delish! If you are looking for an amazing app ask for the salmon and mango. It is to die for! The hot night roll was very very good. The staff was friendly and didn’t have a long wait for food, which was good cause we were starving when we came in. I have found my new sushi place! Updade: Sumo Sushi is still continuing to deliver wonderful sushi that will delight your taste buds! New menu and new lunch specials make the choice easy.

I’ve a question for you. Do you like sushi? Do you like spending a reasonable amount for them? Then go to Sumo Sushi! Based on the other sushi places in SLO, Sumo hits a sweet spot between affordable and high quality. It is my go-to, especially when I’m eating with a big group. They are really good about splitting checks, and will come around with Square readers and take each person’s bill separately(a god send when my group of 20 came in). They also have a fun birthday thing where they bring you a dessert and turn the lights of and yell fun birthday things at you. Paula the owner is the nicest woman you’ve ever met. Kat and Patrick the waiter(ess)s are so nice and super friendly. Their hospitality makes Sumo Sushi a great place where you’re always happy. I promise. I’ve tried almost everything on their menu it seems, and everything was fresh and tasty! Service is fast. One thing to note: they do not serve alcohol(so pregame if you must).

This place was great! Everyone was so nice. We sat at the bar and right away our sushi chef gave us a salmon skin salad appetizer on the house. Yum. Our rolls came quick and our waters were refilled. The waiters were slow but the food was so good and we weren’t in a rush, it didn’t really matter. Our sushi chef was on it though and called the waiter over to help us. He noticed we were waiting for awhile. I highly recommend the baked dynamite roll and the stuffed green mussel appetizer!

Omg! Friday was my first time at Soma Sushi. I had the Sun Fire roll. They didn’t hold back on the fire. It was awesome, if u like spicy. The chefs & the service were impeccable! The salad they gave me prior to my roll was unexpected & sooo yummy. I will definitely go back with my friends & family.

I’ve been to several sushi establishments in SLO but right now this is my favorite. I’ve had several dishes. The shrimp tempura is delish and I love that they start you of with a complimentary salmon skin salad. Customer service is also great. Definitely a place to try. I’ve been going during lunch and can have a nice sit down lunch and get back to the office in less than an hour.

I enjoyed my sushi. Good lunch specials! I was disapointed in the amount of food you get when you order the tempura appetizer. I would not recommend the mixed tempura appetizer at all.

New management — quality is gone! Nasty rice and subpar fish. Used to be amazing now I will be looking for a new sushi spot

This is a great lunch spot. My friend and I used to meet here on the weekly when I worked in San Luis. We always get a Sun Fire roll and then alternate between the very unique Lemon Flush(weird name, tasty roll) or the spicy tuna thing on wontons. The service is quick and friendly. Only thing is, the ladies’ room lock doesn’t work and u don’t figure it out until u have sat down. Someone saw my butt.

Sumo is the best sushi place in slo if you want both quality and a good price. They give generous portions, and the staff are all very friendly. Once they forgot a roll in my friend’s to-go order, and the owner came over to personally apologize and give us free ice cream! I’ve also gotten a free salmon salad another time I went. They are just super nice My favorite roll is the sun fire roll. It’s spicy and they don’t skimp on the fish!

Solid sushi. It’s not Goshi good, but it was still very tasty and fairly priced. I usually get sushi for take-out, and it’s annoying when you don’t get plastic ramekins of soy sauce, and packets instead… how are you supposed to mix and dip your sushi?! Clean fish, good sauces and nice roll combos. The order time was fair and the staff were friendly. I’d come here anytime.
