Sweet and Savory is the hottest spot for baked goods in San Marino! They put their own tasty spin on the classics and come up with new delicious and innovative salads and treats as well. It’s in the center of town and Dora the owner is great about helping out with community events or catering for parties. I’m especially fond of her cheesecake recipe. It’s sweet but not over the top and not so heavy and rich that you feel like you’re over indulging. On the savory side I really like the salad dressing that she makes herself. She seriously needs to bottle that stuff and sell it because it’s amazing. And the curry chicken salad is yummy too. The chocolate covered strawberries, carrot cake, red velvet cupcakes are all scrumptious. Get over too Sweet and Savory for a quick bite at breakfast or lunch and bring something back to the office for everyone else to enjoy!

A small but Great place to pick up something. This location is small, trendy, clean, inviting, friendly, fun, and so on. I came here for lunch on my lunch break and had no idea what to get or even try. I walked in and was immediately greeted by the staff, she was very friendly and welcoming. I was next in line and over heard the customer in front of me say that it was his first time visiting so I mentioned it was mine as well. The cashier was happy to hear that we were both trying the place and give us a quick run down about the menu and also gave us a little sample of the salad, everything is made daily and fresh but the best part was that everything was so delicious. The other customer and I pretty much ordered the same thing because it sounded so good and filling(See photos) I sat down(indoor & outdoor seating) and enjoyed every bit of my meal and was worth every penny. I can’t wait to return and try something new. Give it a try, you won’t be disappointed:)

What a lovely café! Everything was great! My cappuccino was wonderful, the burrito was so good, and I just had to try the red velvet cupcake, which was amazing. So moist and fresh! The service was great! Very friendly and funny staff. I’ll be back soon! Brian

First time here! Love this place already! It’s a hidden gem in San Marino! The lady was really friendly! The patio outside is so comfy, great place for hanging out. A cup of good coffee, the best day to start my day! Love their house coffee, they’re using beans from Intelligentsia, my favorite. Rich scent of roasted beans, I added soy milk, it’s uh-mazing! Plus, it’s only $ 2.50! I’ll come back to try their baked items!

Weird vibe and just so-so baked good. I didn’t try lunch items, but that was also an odd mix. The sign and shaded patio is the best feature of this place.

I love this place! They did the dessert table for my wedding and people still talk about it years later. Additionally, she is our supplier of all party goods; cakes, cookie favors, cupcakes, etc. All our birthday cakes come from this place because it is that good. We’ve also ordered food to go for the Hollywood Bowl and they work with you to get a good menu, making sure it’s easy to eat. Can’t go wrong with Sweet & Savory!

I went in to get their baked mac-n-cheese. The cashier(who I’ve seen for years, and assume is also the owner), was very nice and service was quick. The mac-n-cheese was slightly drier than it normally would be at the top, but was nonetheless delicious.

I haven’t tasted their food and was about to tonight, but an incident occurred that totally turned me off and for that they lost my business and any endorsements I normally give for places I truly like or love. While I understand that my fellow Unilocalers are generally foodies and they focus on food, I believe we also deserve respect and good service that makes us want to come back. I don’t care for the snobbery that the lady at this place exuded. And if you think bad service can be overlooked by good food, then I can suggest places with really high marks, great food/baked goods and top notch service that would make you forget going to a place like this. In San Marino and their premium prices, I would think that they would have top notch customer service or customer relations. But no. I went into the store at about 5:22PM. I did tell her that it was my first time there so I’m checking out their food. I looked and noticed something I wanted to try. I didn’t have my wallet so I told the older lady behind the counter«I’ll be right back». I went to ask my friend if he wanted to try their bread pudding and he was in new moon. So imagine that took all of 1 minute. Then I went to my car and got my wallet and as I was walking back I heard a click and the lady turning the open/closed sign. The time was 5:24PM. She looked at me(and I was holding on to my wallet) and kept on closing down shop and turned AGAIN to look at me and then kept on walking. What shocked me was that she made it a point to turn her back to me. Oh hell no! Are you serious? Yeah, right now if I use any other language I’ll probably be flagged. But, seriously, what the hell? Why didn’t she tell me that she was closing early? Why didn’t she say anything? And to top it all off, it was my friend who told me to go in there to look or else I would never even thought about going in there. And that type of attitude was what I got? Geezus Christ! There are TONS of other places that have better food and service and care about their customers. Other places that would take the time to let me know that they’re closing early especially since the store doesn’t close until 6:30PM. In Unilocal and their website, it said 6:30PM! I normally do not write reviews like this and if you ever check out my other reviews, I’m fair and I look at various aspects of the place. But this experience turned me off so much that I am taking the time to write this.

This shop is owned by a cute older lady who knows her desserts. If you ask her, she will tell you exactly how its supposed to be eaten and what desserts go best for what occasion. I ended up buying dessert for my friend who just had a baby but was fortunate enough to sample some things at the shop that I decided to buy some desserts to take home as well. Their bread pudding was to die for… I took it to go and she instructed me to heat the bread up on both sides with butter and then add the bourbon sauce on top. I made it for my family and they all loved it. it was the perfect end to our thanksgiving day of gluttony. Not sure when i’ll be back in cali again but if i ever need to buy desserts i’m coming here.

Great food and desserts! My favorite is the red velvet cake. All the cupcakes are so good! Sweet and Savory has catered several parties for me. They have provided dinners and cocktail food. Everyone always love the food. Presentation is also classy. I never have to do a thing. The food is delivered in great looking platters and ready to serve. I have used their catering service for five years in a row and plan on continuing!

When I read the other reviews I thought, I don’t care about the service really as long as the food is good. I mean, how bad can the service be? Well… It was bad. They are quite a mess. Very nice, but they need a food network intervention or something to help them out. I came for breakfast with a friend prior to work. The employee rung me up for the French toast I ordered and said it would be about 15 minutes. Someone then yelled from the kitchen that it would be more like 30 minutes because it was a bad day. I said I would need to switch my order then. I asked what was fast and ordered an open faced sandwich at his recommendation. I am vegetarian so I asked for no bacon. Then, again from the kitchen, the voice yelled to charge me a la carte since I’m ordering without the bacon. Meanwhile, he had already charged me for both the French toast and the sandwich and said he couldn’t refund me, but his boss would need to. She, the voice from the kitchen, came out and preceded to refund me with largely dimes and other undesirable change. I changed my order to just a piece of house toast and a pastry because I wanted it to be fast. Apparently I didn’t specify correctly because the house toast when it came out wasn’t the house toast that has streusel on top, but instead just a plain piece of toast. :( While my friend was ordering, the power went out and the cashier was on the phone the whole time. The food is DELICIOUS and I would return, but I will just make sure I have a lot of time and patience before I come.

I used to come here in high school when I’m craving something sweet. The owner of this place is super nice and all the staff is helpful as well. I like that they have bite sized portions so you don’t feel too guilty and you can try a variety of flavors. I came by the other day to purchase cupcakes for my friends birthday. They actually don’t have many selections and at 2pm they were out of the chocolate cupcake already. It was probably really busy that day or something because I would assume chocolate would always be available. Other than that, my friend said the cupcakes were delicious. The big ones are huge for a good price for the size so they are easily sharable. She kept them in the fridge for a couple of days after and they still treated fresh. Be sure to stop by and try the red velvet!

If it were possible for me to give to give zero stars, I would. I recently ordered a roast beef sandwich and the meat was COMPLETELYRAW. Not one piece of it was brown, indicating that it had NOTBEENCOOKED. They gave me a refund, but REFUSED to give me anything else to eat. The owner handled the situation very unprofessionally. She just mumbled a brief apology and avoided eye contact and didn’t bother to mend the situation. Everything here is OVERPRICED, they are RUDE, and apparently try to give salmonella to their customers. I will NEVER come back to this café.

Came here for something sweet after my lunch at San Marino Seafood. So much regret! We ordered the latte, Belgium hot chocolate, cheesecake and red velvet cupcake. No seating inside, but there are sidewalk seating… which is nice on a beautiful day. Latte — watered down foam Belgium hot chocolate — this was made out of powder. my friend thought his cup was light on weight so he opened the top, and when he did, it was only half full. Doesnt taste like any special hot chocolate Cheesecake — it was okay. It lacked enough crust, the cheese was really soft, not in a good way… almost like laughing cow cheese. Red velvet cupcake — I liked it because it wasn’t too sweet, but definitely not worth the $ 3.50. I pay $ 3.50 for a sprinkles cupcake… and that’s worth it. The worst part: Service was TERRIBLE. I hope these two girls didn’t own the place. I was looking at the baked goods through the glass, and a girl asks us «are you ordering only from the bakery?» With a total attitude… but I told her were not sure yet. then while we were looking at the menu that’s on the wall, the girl at the register raises her voice and says«AREYOUGOINGTOORDER?» not even 15 seconds after… not trying to be mean, but we thought this was rude and definitely not how you speak to customers. Wouldn’t come back… I really wanted to like this place.

I can’t believe I didn’t try this place sooner! As a frequent diner at SM Seafood, I always thought that Sweet & Savory was solely a bakery for pastries and desserts so never bothered to go inside. My friend wanted to do breakfast here and I was surprised they serve food! We ordered the breakfast burrito with maple glazed bacon and omg, it was the most delicious non-greasy burrito I’ve ever had. I didn’t get that«heavy bloated» feeling like I do when I eat a breakfast burrito from a Mexican fast food joint like Lucky Boys. The owner is super nice and the waiter was very helpful. I found out they even have Sunday brunch and my friend said it’s worth trying! I’ll definitely be back again.

I would most likely come back to this mom and pop restaurant. My bf and I came here after a hike with my dog. We brought the dog too as there was outdoor seating. We came here for their Sunday brunch and saw that they have beignets. We went to New Orleans last summer and really enjoyed the beignets there. I stayed outside with my dog, while he went to order the beignet and an ice coffee. Well, he comes back out and said that they haven’t turned on their deep fryer(?) so they can’t fry up the beignets. I find this to be odd since brunch started at 10, and it was past 11 when we were there. Anyway, we decided on the bagel and lox sandwich instead. He went back in to order, and didn’t come out for at least 10 minutes even though there were no other customers ordering. I was wondering if he’d fallen into the abyss or was waiting for them to finish preparing our food. He finally did come out, sans our sandwich, after 10+ minutes?! It turns out that it took so long because the bagel and lox sandwich is not a common order, so the cashier had a hard time locating it on the register. Kind of surprising that it’s not commonly ordered. We eventually did get our sandwich and ice coffee. The ice coffee, was literally, coffee over ice, which means that the coffee was very diluted. I’ve worked at coffee shops in the past, and I know that’s not how ice coffee is usually made. On top of that, we had to ask for sugar and cream because she forgot those. The sandwich was not bad, considering that it was only $ 5. The ice coffee, on the other hand, is expensive at $ 3 for diluted coffee. I’d come back because I like that there is outdoor seating so I can bring the dog. Our server was sweet and asked I’d like water for my dog. The price was also reasonable, but next time, I think we’ll order something else or perhaps phone in a beignet order so hopefully, it’ll be ready when we got there.

The baked goods look very tasty, but after just having lunch next door at New Moon Restaurant, I was only in the mood for a drink. The woman behind the counter quickly notified me that she had no cook in the kitchen, so many items would be unavailable. «Order something simple,» she advised. I opted for the iced latte. She made me an iced coffee. I asked to add a little milk. Instead, she pulled a small plastic cup of heavy whipping cream from the refrigerated display case, along with some liquid syrup. The blob of cream hit my coffee with a THUD. I stirred and stirred but it wouldn’t mix into my coffee; it insisted on floating in little white specks at the top. I was turned off. I asked for some milk to complete the drink, and a lid for my to-go drink. No straws to be found. In the end the coffee tasted like a $ 3.50 cup of tap water. Next time I’ll stick to Starbucks for coffees and leave Sweet & Savory to handle the desserts. Disappointed with this visit, but will try again and hope to increase my rating.

I kind of don’t want to post this because I want to keep it to myself. But I want to give this wonderful café and the lovely owner a huge shout out. On Sundays there is brunch. On the brunch menu is chicken and waffle. That fried chicken is stupendous! It’s brined, very well seasoned, and the most perfect fry! I had a piece of breast and it was well cooked and remained moist. It’s served with bechamel and syrup, and you should eat it all together, as Dora, the owner strongly suggests, because it’s even better all together! Dora also made me a small blueberry pancake to try. It was light, fluffy, wow! She had tweaked the recipe until it was just right. Just like with the fried chicken. And they are perfect! The chicken takes some time to make, as it is freshly made to your order, and they are a small operation, so don’t go there being rude. The coffee is Intelligentsia. Because Dora is about good quality. She cares about the ingredients and making delicious food. And she has such a great vibe, so down to earth, and attention to what she’s creating for us. I look forward to going back many times to try different things, especially those desserts!
