I will say, this place is alright for coffee but great for the free wi-fi, food, the atmosphere and the beer you can get starting at 11!(I think …) I think their coffee is just very normal, they do pourovers and all that jazz but this is no third wave coffee shop. Their coffee taste very much like your local diner coffee, but maybe made with more care. They have a long, and large seating area, very open design and very cute regulars that the staff are very friendly to. They have plugs and wifi so you can definitely work it up in here if you needed to. The food is also reasonable and if there’s nothing else open, not half bad either.

This is a great spot to hang out to get some work done(don’t expect many electrical outlets) in a airy spacious atmosphere. They have pretty good coffee, and even a unique selection of beers! Seating is a little limited and they could probably increase it a little, but it’s still adequate. There are also a small number of tables outside in front of the store. Staff are really friendly and I love the wooden décor(old-style bar, etc.). Definitely drop by here!

Okay, I find myself in downtown San Mateo daily for the next 10 – 12 weeks and I was looking for a coffee spot with internet. The first few days I stumbled around trying to find a place. I happened to walk into Kaffeehaus quite by chance and was immediately impressed. Nice wide open space. Plenty of comfortable booths and tables. I met the owner who was gracious enough to give me the wifi password and away I worked. Been here three days in a row now and I have had the lox on rye everytime; this guy knows his stuff!!! I am really glad there are still places like this around and don’t let the two $$ fool you because this is a five star joint!

The best European Café style in the Bay Area. I really recommend, great, wine, beer, deserts.

Great little place for work, casual meetings, and coffee(of course!) right in downtown San Mateo. I’m on the hunt for work-friendly cafes and I find this one to be really quiet compare to others with a lot of private seats and tables for people who want to seclude themselves. The staff is always very friendly. The crowd here is very respectful here as well. Good variety of food and coffee. They even serve alcohol for those who need a little push to do their work ;)

Nice, low key spot for casual drinks or coffee. Staff is very friendly and attentive. It’s nice to be able to get a beer in a coffee shop, without having to go to a more traditional bar. But I marked it down for the drab interior with really no atmosphere, and drinks are very expensive($ 7+ for a draft beer).

Great place to come and get some studying done. And then to grab a beer afterwards to reward yourself! I like the open space and the comfortable booths are very inviting. I came in here unplanned as I was in the area and needed a place to grab some coffee and get my work done and I was very much over your typical Starbucks sort of establishment. I looked up unique coffee houses in the area and this place came up. My cashier was super friendly and recommended that I get their pesto sandwich as I also wanted a bite to eat. Sandwich was yummy and the coffee was good. Central location, you can walk a block or two and find yourself in the heart of DT.

Whenever I’m back in South Bay for vacation, I always make it a point to meet up with one of my girlfriends who lives in SF. We meet in the middle at San Mateo for a relaxing girls’ day of catching up(and snacking: D). San Mateo is the ideal place since it has so many different options and we can get whatever strikes our mood that day. I came to Kaffeehaus to wait out the traffic back to S Bay and I’m so glad I found this gem. This will be my go-to coffee/tea spot for getting work done while waiting out traffic because I like the food+drinks and aesthetics. FOOD: I came in planning to try either the open face salmon sandwich or the prosciutto sandwich, but ended up going for the caprese because the focaccia bread looked yummy. Ingredients were fresh and it was perfect for the light dinner I was looking for(after already getting snacks earlier). I ordered a lavender mint tea, which I loved! The service of the barista was great — taking the initiative to check if I wanted my sandwich toasted and if I needed the wifi password since I had my laptop with me. I would definitely come back to try other teas(like the pretty flowering tea!) and pair it with some pastries. AESTHETICS: When I walked in, I realized why so many people mentioned high ceilings in their reviews — it really brings an open and spacious feel to the place that I really like. There are outlets by some of the booths and it was easy to find a comfortable spot to camp out at when I arrived. The tables are solid wood and large. Since the space is large, it doesn’t get too loud with people talking and becomes the nice murmur of café background noise. Overall, I’m not too picky when I need a café to camp out at(as long as they have wifi, outlets, and drinks aren’t too overpriced, I’m happy), so it’s definitely a lovely plus when I can get fast internet and good-quality food in a comfortable setting! —– UPDATE: The next morning, I was on my way up to SFO for a morning pickup and that was the perfect excuse to drop by Kaffehaus again. I got an almond croissant and hibiscus ginger tea — both were delicious. I had meant to only try a bite of the croissant but ended up eating half of it — oops: P. It was the perfect welcome-back-to-the-Bay snack!

My fave coffee in San Mateo. Nice sandwiches and quiches too. Great european style pastries and terrific selection of beer and wine. The owner — Val is a very good dude, too.

When I want to work in a café for a little while, I look forward to finding myself here. The drinks are tasty and the atmosphere is good. Today I found the wifi a bit cludgy and places to plug in are always at a premium. Still, I’ve enjoyed it tremendously for an hour or so when I have non-Internet heavy tasks and need to not be at home. Staff today was very nice, and I don’t recall experiencing the issues, ever, others have mentioned. Perhaps it’s because I try to be aware of when I’m loitering versus being an active customer. :) I’m curious about dinner and bar nibbles here, but have never been in at night.

Nice coffee house with a great space. Their coffee drinks are good and they have beer and wine in the afternoon. This is my second favorite coffee option in San Mateo.

Worst service ever. Took over 1hr for a sandwich they forgot 3 times. Armenian«pizza» large was a joke, size of a mini pancake. Desserts were dry. This was only my 2nd visit. My 1st experience in the evening was awesome, but after today’s experience will never return. Poor, unfriendly and expressionless service. Don’t waste your time coming here, go to Crêpe Vine in Burlingame for dessert crepes instead. I would give them zero stars but it won’t let me post without 1 star! :0(

A nice little coffee house to have a quiet drink, it has a very relaxed European vibe unlike some of its noisier upbeat neighbours. My friends and I came for an afternoon brunch on the open table outside, it was great for people watching and there was even a live jazz playing across the street. We shared some chocolate cake, lamington, almond cake and a strawberry rhubarb cake amongst us. They were a little pricey but all very delicious.

I’ve only been here twice and the second time I visited, it was coffee AND a show(got your attention now, don’t I?). :P The first time I came was after dinner about a year and some change ago, and I had a hot chocolate. Delicious! This place was open late, was big + spacious + comfortable. Thumbs up! The second time I came was after lunch with a friend last week. It was a beautiful day, and I got myself an Americano straight-up(aka black as night). Good stuff! Not terribly strong, but a nice balanced flavor. Anyhoo– we sat outside in the French-y style outdoor seating area, and some crazy guy across the street starts hollering some obscene things at no one. We thought he was just a local crazy and that he would eventually stop. Nope. He started walking up and down the sidewalk yelling at people, harassing pedestrians, blocking traffic. The chef man owner dude came out and called the police on this guy. After a few minutes, several cops came and wrestled him down — - right down the street from us! I grabbed my Americano, stood up, sipped, and watched. CUHRAZY! He was taken away eventually, I finished my coffee, and was thankful I didn’t go to the Starbucks a block over like I had originally intended. My recommendation? I recommend. Enjoy your coffee, mocha, pastry, or even some sandwiches in this lovely café – you might even be lucky enough to catch a «show» like I did. Bön appetit!

Kaffeehaus has a very comfortable and welcoming ambiance for coffee lovers, dog walkers, and work-at-home individuals everywhere. Grab an outdoor seat and an iced latte while you take a mini break with your dog. Or, grab a comfortable seat inside whether it be a chair or booth and cool down from this summer heat with their refreshing A/C. This place features a spacious room with many chairs, tables, and booths to choose from. On a weekday afternoon, it’s not too crowded at all and you can definitely sit here for hours and get some work done — there are plentiful outlets and the Wi-Fi connection is great! Or, you can bring a friend here to chat the day away. I ordered the Iced Caramel Latte and it tastes like your average made latte. I wasn’t too impressed, but I was satisfied once I asked for more sweetener. I definitely like the ambiance here more than their drinks, but I’ll definitely be back if I’m ever working in the San Mateo area again. They also have delicious looking pastries and desserts to choose from if your stomach is feeling empty. As for parking, Downtown San Mateo can be quite troublesome. There is a Parking Garage nearby, but it was packed to its fullest capacity so I ended finding some street parking. There are parking meters outside these spots, which is $ 1.00/hour.

Visited Kaffeehaus with a friend to study. Their located in downtown San Mateo so there’s plenty of parking. Upon arriving, you instantly notice the spaciousness and high ceilings. They have plenty of seating inside and out. They have tables with chairs as well as booths and offer free wifi. They serve sandwiches, desserts, salads, coffee, tea, snacks, beer, and wine. Their lighting is pretty dim and not that great for reading for long periods of time. I ordered a regular coffee with almond milk and a boston market dessert. My friend ordered jasmine tea, shortbread cookies, and a cookie. The boston market dessert was very good and paired well with my coffee. The staff working the night I visited(Thursday night) were very friendly.

The best thing about this place is that its open until 11pm. Nothing else differentiates it from all the other coffee places in the bay area. The sweets are great, the coffee is good, just like all the other places. But for those of us bored with Starbucks who like coffee after 8pm, a place like this is a gem. I drive here from Daly City. Happy to do it.

We went here late on a Saturday night, since I wanted to have some coffee post dinner and this was one of the only cafes open late in the area. We ordered a cappuccino and a carrot cake. The cappuccino was just perfect and exactly what I was looking for, probably even better. The carrot cake was good as well, except that I wish it was a bit softer. The other thing I liked about this place was the ambience, with its high ceilings and spaced out seating. I would definitely come here again.

Came on a late Saturday night because all those Asian tea places were packed. All I want is a hot beverage and place to sit, yo! There weren’t that many people here, making for a calm environment and good place to chat. Had some floral tea. Served in a clear glass, so I could see the flowers open up in the hot water. Blossom young flower, blossom! Seems like a neighborhood gathering place. Good place to get some work done or meet with others.

Nice coffee shop in downtown San Mateo This place looks as good on the outside as it is pleasant to be when you’re inside. The vibe is casual, with a bar tucked inside next to the coffee«stand», so you can get both coffee and alcoholic beverages. There is outside seating – the large entrance meant that the place feels like it doesn’t even have a wall to the outside world. The tea/coffee is reasonably priced, and brewed pretty nicely. The wifi is fast, and consistent. The opening hours are abundant. There is also a lot of seats inside, so you won’t have to fight the other customers to find a seat. Also, for some reason there is a photo of Donald Trump with presumably the owner, on one of the shelves. W00t? Overall, an excellent café for groups as well as for chilling out with a laptop.
