In town to see my favorite band(Night Ranger) and had a few hours to kill… searched San Mateo restaurants and found Qube and saw it was offering a $ 15 for $ 20 worth of food Unilocal Deal so… let’s go. We arrived around 11 — an odd time. I had breakfast. She had lunch. It’s that kind of place. My cheese and bacon omelette($ 9.95) was served with a choice of hash browns or «home potatoes» and toast. The hash browns were very basic — nothing special. The toast was good — like a Texas/Sourdough mash up. But the omelette… so dry. Just a tiny tiny bit of Jack cheese in the middle… plenty of bacon bits(maybe real bacon but in pieces so it was hard to tell). The bacon I can forgive… the dearth of cheese was beyond sad. But my SO liked her veggie burger. Her fries were not to her liking — they are of the thick cut variety and pretty tasteless. Service was fast and friendly and prices were downright cheap. We paid less than $ 24 for a late breakfast/early lunch. And the Unilocal deal is helpful — I love a coupon. There is a 5% check in deal as well but you can’t use both that and the Unilocal Deal. Ample parking. It’s not bad food. If I lived in the area I’d give it another try. They seem to have an intriguing Happy Hour that looks worthy of investigation. And the décor that is either totally out of date or an homage to kitsch, is very fun.

Hostess is super sweet & my waitress, Eva, was the best in the whole universe. Best basa I have ever had, grilled to perfection. The lemon butter sauce was amazing! Tried the tomato basil soup, which was also amazing. All the food & service has been great so far

Found this place after the Maker’s Faire. Good food, good service would totally come back if in the area again. Would totally recommend! My friends had breakfast for dinner and they loved it. I had the chili burger that was well cooked and lots of cheese.

There was no wait and the food was good. My server was really nice and helpful. Plus I had great service. My fried steak was tasty! Great place to get a quick bite if you need to hit the road.

Truly a hidden gem of San Mateo! The house made corned beef hash is a killer choice for breakfast! And if your there for lunch the Kababs are the way to go! Service is always spectacular and it’s got the cozy diner feel! This is by far one of my favorite comfort food grub spots!

Qube was an interesting spot, definitely great to check out if you like the local diner style feel, not the right fit for me. I met some folks here after work on Friday to grab a drink and have some apps since it’s close to home. The inside is a very classic diner look, very cute, and very friendly. The menu is interesting ranging from crepes and eggs to kabobs and cocktails. The draft menu was decent, we got 2 pints of a standard IPA. For food we tried the duck fat fries, chicken kebobs which came with rice. The kebobs came in two portions– the meat first followed by a huge plate of rice with a grilled tomato. I think they dish is best when mixed together but unfortunately we didn’t realize it and ate most of the kebobs before the rice arrived! The rice was long grain– a little dry, but definitely plenty big for portion. The duck fat fries were large wedge fries, and tasted pretty standard. Great for picking up a big dip of ketchup! Overall a cute diner, nothing too notable but definitely very friendly!

I had the Beef & Reef dinner. NY steak & Garlic Shrimp. It was great. The salad was perfect that came with it. My husband had the Fish & Chips and Clam Chowder. He loved both. We will be back.

Five stars for management! Excellent. Had an issue a month of so ago. Talk to one of the partners, and he took care of the issue immediately. Five stars for food and food preparation. The cook is beyond excellent. Two stars for today’s waitress(3÷15÷16). Not only does she barely speak English, but will answer your questions without understanding what you asked, and then argue with you that you asked something else and you were confused! Didn’t get her name, but there was only two waitresses there Tuesday morning at approx. 11:30. The other waitress was pleasant, but just as bad English. I’m not complaining because of their bad English, but they should not be in an environment where English is constantly spoken and knowledge of the English language is essential. But to argue about syntax???

Tandoori chicken burger $ 10 was surprisingly good, and my boy enjoyed the big breakfast all day menu. Qube is not what I expected, despite driving by often. Interior looks like a stylish Art Deco diner set inside a cavern with big windows overlooking busy El Camino Real, apparently recently remodeled to be brighter with nice lighting. Menu is large, somewhat confusing, and mostly overpriced. I say mostly, because the prices appear to be set haphazardly, with the beef version costing $ 5 more than the same dish with chicken. And I say confusing, because while it’s mostly American food, you can find fajitas, kebabs, and various Indian dishes, along with the aforementioned breakfasts. The service was quirky and unusually attentive, checking details often and one at a time. They seem to have many older regular customers, but there were younger people there too(maybe more after cocktails start!).

Not so good… I ordered the«house made corned beef hash», but was dissapointed to find the dish as simply being bland processed sliced corned beef coldcut, chopped and mixed with ½″ cubes of potatoes. House made? Hardly. When I make corned beef hash I boil a corned brisket, cut it cross grain, and fork shred it into ranfom bits, I brown diced onion and add tiny chunks of cooked potatoes… and season it. Packaged cold cuts do not belong in a breakfast hash. I miss the previous restaurant that was at this location before it became qube.

We didn’t stop here because we expected 5 star service but we were very disappointment, where should I start. Maybe it was our waiter and the chef yelling at each other and nearly getting physical, or maybe it was our waiters initial comments under his breath that after waiting nearly a lifetime to be seated we decided to seat ourselves at the counter, then the debate with the two waiters on who was going to wait on us(talk about not feeling the love), maybe it was the complete lack of customer service by our waiter. Honestly, I have never been that uncomfortable having a meal and felt the staff was going to get into an altercation at any moment at any location. Asking for something was like being given a special privilege, our waiter disappeared for awhile and the other waiter zipped passed us despite several attempts to get her attention. I noticed that everyone near us was not getting their order correct or was having one or more issues so I don’t take it personally but not sure how they will stay in business with this sad level of customer service. Once we received the food it was outstanding but the staff was either overwhelmed, and or lacked the experience to manage under a little pressure but no matter we will not be back.

Been here a couple times and it’s never been busy enough to not get seated immediately so that’s awesome! The food comes out in great time and it’s delicious. The menu is huge too! The only thing that’s I’ve noticed every time I’ve been there is that it takes a million years to get your check but honestly I don’t mind because I’m never in a rush when I’m done. And even if I was, you have to pay at the cashier, I’d just get up and someone would take care of me there.

This is my current most favorite place to eat and I try to get here whenever I am in San Mateo. Everything I’ve tried has been superb. It’s really hard to steer away from my all time favorite, Chicken Marsala, but i have varied my choices and everything I’ve had was definitely to my liking. Tonight I tried the Chicken Schnitzel and it was delightfully good. so moist and tender with a light crisp crust. I didn’t even put the gravy on it because it was so delicious without it. The penne with Chicken, Onion, and Pine Nuts was a recent treat… something different from my usual pasta, and there was lots of chicken in it. And, btw, the ice tea is the real deal. brewed by them. You can tell it is fresh and ‘homemade.’ If you like Key Lime Pie, try theirs. It is thick and creamy. the best I’ve ever had. The wait staff are all very friendly and it is a pleasure to interact with them. Only con is that service can be slow. but i’m retired so that is not a problem for me. i find the food is well worth the wait. But if you are on a time schedule, let the waitress know and she will accommodate you. I can’t wait to go back and try their Signature Butter Chicken!

Being a native of the area i had almost forgotten that there was a little restaurant in front of «the Villa» senior living facility.(Previously was a Radison hotel.) Its been called many things over the years and served a variety of types of food. Now its been transformed into Qube Bar and grill. A remarkably giant menu that is truly Californian in its collection of diverse types of food. First off it serves breakfast all day. Just for this alone it earns points with me. :-) They have a nice selection of all the diner classics you can think of. From there they throw in Kabab, pasta dish’s, and a random dash of all sorts of food you wouldn’t expect to get at the same place. such as Vietnamese Noodle Salad with Rice noodle, hot mint, chili, caramel peanut, coriander, nam nook dressing, and Szechuan Salt and Pepper Calamari. what?! :-) On our inaugural trip(no doubt we will be back). My wife got the lamb burger with mint yogurt sauce and it was Delicious! I got the Special, angel hair pasta with Cajun sausage and white crème sauce, which was great. Service was very friendly and attentive and prices were reasonable. Décor is a mix of 50’s/60’s diner(pictures of Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart on the wall) with a modern twist and a view of the trains zipping by on railroad tracks(no doubt my son will enjoy coming here). Honestly my only complaint was that the menu was so extensive and varied that i couldn’t easily decide what to have. If you are looking for a classic diner experience with a modern twist this is a great place to go, and bring your friends as there is plenty of space.

So, to my surprise, I get this really friendly message from the new management at Qube. It was an invitation to try them again with their new menu The responsiveness of the management to feedback was definitively a point scorer. I wish every business exerted this effort into ensuring customer satisfaction. We were greeted by a very friendly waitress(i so regret not getting her name). The listings on the new menu were indeed intriguing and inviting. It included hints of favorite Indian dishes and American classics. Well, this fusion was a welcomed surprise. We ordered the Calamari appetizer. It was just the right amount of spice. The calamari was flavorful and had just the right texture(see photo). It was served atop a spring mix of greens with a light coconut dressing. Yum. It was a great start so far. My son ordered the Traditional Club Sandwich(see photo). I was hesitant… he doesn’t really like sandwiches. But, the sandwich turned out to be better than«traditional». It had nice thick slices of bacon and turkey. And, a fried egg! Surprise ! Now, he’s a fan… of sandwiches and the restaurant. He got encouraged by the dishes so far and tried my butter chicken(photo). Now, that’s a statement coming from a 13 year old. The chicken was tender and spiced deliciously. He’s now a fan of that too. Harmail, who responded to my Unilocal review, stopped by to make sure things were good. Well, I gotta say… things were good. I’m sure this new local spot will do well if this quality of food and service continues. Thank you, Harmail and Qube staff for turning our experience around. This was a great way to end a long work day and week! We’ll be spreading the word and coming back to try more new dishes.

This place used to be Paul’s Diner, and the food was just ok then. It honestly hasn’t changed. They even use the old menus still. We go here because it is close to our house, on the way to my husband’s work, and because sometimes you just want breakfast and it doesn’t need to be fancy. The servers are very nice, and the place is clean. There is not a changing table in either bathroom, so I had to change my kid on the floor, which, even with a mat is uncomfortable and icky, but that’s sadly fairly common(the not having a changing table.) All in all, this is not the kind of place I long to bring my parents when they visit, and it is not where I will suggest meeting a friend… but I will eat there myself on a whim, and if someone else suggested it, I would go. My husband and I are both fans of the combos. I like the pancake version, he favors the waffles. We always have leftovers.
