I’m really depressed about this review… Truly. I’ve been to this restaurant now 4 times and the first 2 visits were 5 star worthy. They were amazing!!! I had the crispy Chile relleno both times because I was so blown away with how good it was. The third time was awful… Bad service… They were out of the relleno… Food was gross… But I wasn’t ready to give up on Agave! Neither was my husband. We said«one more time, maybe it was just because it was Sunday!» Well we just finished our meal and the service was fine — forgettable but not bad. And the relleno is not the same. The pork green Chile had no flavor at all. The peppers were not cleaned properly so they were very spicy and the beans tasted like paste of nothingness. There was a lot of tender pork chunks in the verde though… I want to cry a bit because we will never be back. And that crispy Chile relleno was the best I had ever eaten in the mid west. Let’s all have a moment of silence to mourn the relleno that can never be again. …

We were traveling through Sandy and found this restaurant on Unilocal. We were greeted and served drinks promptly. Service was excellent throughout our dinner and the cabbage salsa was great! My husband had the combination plate; pork taco(bland), chicken enchilada(tasteless), chili rellanos(limp). I had seafood enchilada, however, the seafood was minimal. I like the option of swapping rice or beans with salad or veggies, so opted for salad. It was served on the hot enchilada plate. No Bueno!

Best Mexican in the area! Everything is delicious and they make a killer margarita. I really enjoy the enchilada pablamos and the carne asada quesadilla. The Molcajete is amazing but make sure you have 2 or more people to eat it! Seriously an excellent dish!

Very poor service and mediocre food. We were seated at a table and I had to ask twice for a high chair before they finally brought it out. Then they brought out chips and salsa, which had a good flavor but lacked heat. We finished those and waited several minutes before we saw our server again. We asked for some napkins and she came back with one napkin for our table of 6 and set it down in a rush and took off again. We had to flag her down again and ask her to take our order. After she took our order the food came out surprisingly quickly. We ordered the carne asada quesadilla which tasted like a cheap burger inside a mediocre tortilla with sparse amounts of cheese. We also got the queso chorizo which was $ 11 for a very small portion and just ok but would have been better if they brought us chips to eat with it! We also got the agave burrito which tasted pretty good. Then we waited and waited and waited and waited to get a drink refill and a check and neither happened until we tracked her down and asked for the check. We never did get a refill on our drinks. I gave it 2 stars because the kitchen staff was quick and the burrito was pretty good. But the rest was awful.

I wanted to tey this place out for a while. So naturally when I saw the Living Social deal, I jumped on it. I was hopeful but a little disappointed. The salsa was ok but not flavorful enough for my tastes. And it is more of the same with the rest of our order. I ordered simply quesadillas and pork tacos, because I figured if they get them right the rest is cake. Well, first disappointment, the tortillas were soggy. I hate soggy tortillas. They fell apart immediately. They were, like the salsa tasteless. And rhe final straw, the refried beans tasted burnt and the rice waa without much flavor. The service was great, the salsa grew on me and they serve beer. Will I come back? I’m already debating becuase it is a local business and Ijust maybe it was an off day for them. I wish them luck

Yup… Meh. Great service by Fernanda, cute place with nice furniture and decorations(but a heavy duty echo chamber due to the high ceilings…), and some tasty salsa and chip… but beyond all that? Meh. My wife had combo plate #1, and she indicated that it was average… and my two boys both had steak fajitas, and they were kinda’ bland. I had the fajitas carnitas(pork fajitas), and it was VERY bland. Some nice pork, but zero flavor. The accompanying side of guacamole was mediocre, and the re-fried beans were ‘corny’ tasting, almost as if they were low-fat beans. My margarita was good, and filled to the brim… but overall, the entire family said that we’d cross this place off our list… permanently. Too many other(better) Mexican restaurants in the Sandy/Midvale/Murray area to patronize.

The food is delicious, and the service is great. We never had to wait for water or service, and I never felt like the waiter was checking on us too much. The portions are large and very filling. The food tastes amazing, and they are more than accommodating with ingredient substitutions. The restaurant was very clean and well kept, and the atmosphere was friendly and casual. I’d recommend Agave if you’re looking for above average Mexican food.

We’re here again. It’s really great. We have a new waitress, Bri, she’s great! It’s quick and delicious! That’s agave!

I’ve had two good visits and one not so great. Today’s Chicken Fajita salad was absolutely delicious. Probably the best I have had. It was the grilled mushrooms that really set it apart. Fabulous!

This restaurant is really cute inside with good looking, colorful furniture. The chips and salsa are really good. The salsa tastes fresh and is a nice medium level of spice. I got the chicken chimichanga, which was delicious. The outside was perfectly crunchy, and the inside was moist and had shredded chicken and melty cheese. The beans and rice that come with the meal are pretty bland, which was a bummer.

So when I walked in, Groupon in hand, I figured this would be just like any other old Mexican restaurant. I mean, the décor was run of the mill… frescoes on the wall… the occasional sombrero sitting here and there… the typical glassy tiled tables… and, of course, you started off with the usual tortilla chips with salsa… But when it came to the food(I mean, the main course), boy was I wrong! They had a very, VERY extensive menu, and it took me a while to figure out what I wanted. Frankly, it all sounded very good, so I just decided to employ my age old strategy of ordering one thing that I’ve tried many times before at different places, just to get a feel for how the restaurant compared to others, and something that I have never tried before, just because I’m adventurous like that. So I eventually settled on the mole enhilada(old and familiar) and the chile colorado(new and adventurous). Certainly, the description made the chile colorado sound extra, extra good… and exotic… with«chunks of beef cubes simmered in red sauce»…or something, to that effect. Anyway, when the waiter came out, boy was I surprised! The dishes were HUMONGOUS! They were so massive, just the two of them pretty much took up the entire table. Needless to say, I didn’t finish either. Each plate had a good, balanced mixture of beans, rice, and salad. They were even gracious enough to ask what kind of beans and what kind of rice I wanted.(For example, dried vs refried, white vs brown.) This, I didn’t expect, since in my experience, most restaurants just default to one type of beans and rice. The mole enchilada was pretty typical of other restaurants in the area. But the chile colorado! OH! That was heavenly! Very comforting on a night where I hadn’t had much to eat for lunch. Very wholesome, very rich, yet went well with the rice, beans, and salad. No overpowering overly salty taste, not overly liquid or dry. Just perfect! Best of all, it wasn’t really expensive. The total price for the two was a little over $ 20. And the service was really great. Very friendly, say hi and bye all the time.(Most restaurants will acknowledge you when you come in, but hardly anyone notices when you’re done and you walk out. These people did, which was nice.) Probably the only thing to their discredit was the menu they first handed me. Apparently, someone had eaten off of it because it had food all over the pages. I kindly had to ask for another one. But otherwise, I really enjoyed my experience at Agave. If there’s another Groupon out there, I’ll be sure to nab it. Because I KNOW I want to go back!

This place is a big old NOPE for me. Lets start off with what I like, shall we? –The service was awesome. They were so nice here, so I feel kind of bad about my 1 star review. Kind of. –The salsa was good –The chips were good. Now to what I don’t like. –It is freezing in here. I know you burn more calories when you are cold, but I don’t like chewing while my teeth are chattering –Cole slaw salsa? What kind of drugs are you on to think of making this? Because I think you should share. –The sauce. Oh dear sweet Jesus the sauce. I don’t talk about buttholes a lot, but I am pretty sure the sauce here is just some guy’s diarrhea. I have never ever had such a disgusting sauce in my life. It is almost impossible to ruin a bean and cheese burrito for me, but Agave did it. I ended up throwing my burrito away and pouting the whole way home. If you like diarrhea burritos, agave is your place.

Listen, I’ve been here once. It was a Saturday night and I had two of my three young daughters with me. It was later, probably close to 9:00 when we walked through the door. The evening rush was over but I got the feeling staff ducked into the back for a much needed break. They probably deserved it but it came at the expense of our service. not a deal-killer but slightly annoying. I don’t know that I do justice on these reviews. I haven’t tried everything on the menu. I didn’t take notes and my short-term memory is typically adled by intoxicants or Attention Deficit Disorder. I’ve never had formal instruction on being a food critic. My typical review reflects that I’m a big fan of Malcom Gladwell and Blink. You make that first impression and it becomes your reality. My first and lasting impression of this place was, «Nice. There’s a little more variety for Mexican in Sandy.» My first impression wasn’t, «OMG, this is soo good I can’t wait to get back!» or «Check out this custom furniture and hand-painted ceramic tiles!» or «I think we just found our new favorite place to go!» Don’t get me wrong. It was positive. Mostly. That cabbage salsa number they do was almost inhaled by my 13-year-old. Portions were generous and food was fresh. The taste was unique but not special. I don’t begrudge them for wanting to be profitable but it’s a pricepoint that’s not commensurate with the quality/atmosphere I’m willing or interested in supporting. I’ll be back someday. Right about the time I’m sick of the other two options for Mexican in Sandy and too lazy to go further than the boundaries of my sleepy suburb.

Highlights of my meal: chips and two types of salsa, and in particular, the cabbage salsa(thinly sliced cabbage, red onions, cilantro, lime, and maybe some red bell pepper — can’t remember all the ingredients), and the chipotle wings(LOVED these wings! The sauce on the wings was a highlight as well). The fajita salad was a bit on the uninspired side. While the deep fried shell created a delicious backdrop for a potentially good salad, the meat was tough as boots, the flavors never made a real ‘appearance’ per se, and the produce wasn’t anything to write home about. That said, I like this place. I want to try more, and I’m confident my choice of fajita salad was on the uninspired side, so my bad.

I’ve been here a few times so it’s now time for the review. Survey says, «Mui Delicioso!!» I’m gonna put Agave firmly at #3 on my list of top ten Mexican restaurants, behind only the world famous place and the world famous place #2(I have a policy against mentioning/comparing other restaurants in a review). So, essentially, this place is the 2nd best Mexican in Utah, IMO. Yes, it’s that good. They have a molcajete dish and it’s vastly superior to the others I’ve had in Salt Lake County. There’s nothing frozen, canned or pre-fab about the meat and veggies in this bad boy! And it’s HUGE! The menu says it’s a meal for two, but the two people who shared it at our table barely made a dent. This was good news for the rest of us, as we got to try it. Unfortunately I was already beyond stuffed from consuming my Al Pastor street taco combination plate, which was also phenomenal. The décor is very nice and welcoming. It definitely looks and feels like a nice restaurant in Old Mexico. The service on my visits has been top shelf. The wait staff, managers, bussers, etc. are all friendly and fun. They make jokes and take jokes very well and they do their best to make it a good experience. Mission Accomplished! I would probably feel okay about giving Agave 4 stars, but they’re in Sandy and they have a FULLBAR. If that’s not worth the 5th star, then I don’t know what is.

You might look at the shiny, bright interior and many of the saucy and cheesy menu items and want to write this place off as just another Mexican restaurant. You know the kind – they fit every cliché out there with the décor that looks like a border crossing trinket shop exploded and everything comes with beans. Don’t make that mistake. While there are some familiarities and conformities to the old stereotype(go with what works, right?) there is also more than meets the eye at Agave. This is the third location for the business, and the first in Utah. The space does have a certain luster and I wouldn’t call it understated, but it’s also not too over the top. They have a TV screen(maybe more – I only faced the one direction and didn’t look around the other way) and ample seating. Let’s begin with the menu. While you can have your enchilada platter or burritos or tacos, they also have some deeper cuts. Tacos al pastor, for example. And Steak Jalisco. Go past the first couple pages and it gets more interesting. A couple of mole dishes(mole the sauce, not mole the vermin) and some really interesting seafood dishes with shrimp and scallops. They also seem to be a big fan of mushrooms. In fact, you can order a platter of just mushrooms for an appetizer. I had the chili verde – which came out on a plate the size of a hubcap and had 84 pounds of food. Well, something close to that. It was a more subtle verde sauce, which I rather liked. I also substituted refried beans for whole ones. Do this. I really appreciate the option and it made my plate come to life with better taste and texture. Perhaps the highlight for me was the chips and salsa. Great salsa, with plenty of kick for a wussy mouth like me. They also serve a kind of cabbage salsa/slaw which was a bright shining winner. It’s like nothing I’ve had; it’s part pico de gallo, part cole slaw, some black pepper and I dunno what else. I ate more than I should have. Service was super friendly and the food came out pretty quick. It seems like they’ve been instructed to throw in as many spanish words as they can, so I got a little tired of being called amigo and hearing mucho caliente. Mucho caliente? That’s just not right at all. It felt a little forced, but I have a low threshold for gimmicky things. We stuck with water, but it looks like they have a full booze license, so there was beer and margaritas on the menu. Not too many places to find a margarita in this neck of the woods, so there’s a plus. I’m pleased with my experience. Two of us ate for just under $ 30(with tip) and you had to roll me out of there. This might be a nice middle ground for your less adventurous friends who want more traditional Mexican food but a fun place to explore the menu of lesser-known offerings.

New Mexican restaurant, where Asian Potato used to be. Strip mall along 700 East. Dropped in for Dinner. Seated very quickly by the gracious and friendly host. All servers very very nice, each of them came around multiple times asking if we needed anything. So, customer service 5 stars. Served warm house made chips and sals. Very nice. Salsa was kind of a cilantro based slaw. flavourful. Also try the Salsa Diablo. Spicy but delicious! Ordered the chicken poblano mole.- very good. Not Red Iguana good, but decent enough for a repeat. The rice and beans were delicious too. Wife had the Mojarra — a whole fried fish. I’m not a fish eater but she said it was heaven on a plate! Kids had Quesadillas, also very good. Chef sent in a second plate of quesadillas because he thought the first one did not turn out as well as he wanted. WOW. Haven’t had that happen in a while. So, yeah definitely going back.
