Pulled pork was yummy and moist. Fried chicken was crispy and not greasy. Quick service and nice atmosphere. If you’re into pork rinds they give you some free to try. Hush puppy’s had good flavor and weren’t overlooked. Restaurant seemed clean and a local’s favorite.

We grabbed a take out orderl here while in town for an overnight visit. This is a very new place in a city that doesn’t have many barbecue choices, Ron’s Barn & Stutts are the only ones that come to mind as actual barbecue joints, and Ron’s is probably more a country cooking restaurant. Stuuts has some pretty good barbecue, but is take out only. We grabbed a variety of dishes for folks to try. The barbecue is rather ordinary, with no hint of smokiness, and rather bland — some commercial hot sauce helped, but it can’t make ordinary barbecue much better, you just taste the heat. The ribs were just bad — dry, chewy, bland bad. The Collards were also less than stellar, mushy & overcooked. The slaw was much the same. The Fried Chicken was pretty darn good, I’d definitely try that again. And the Hush Puppies were nice, though a tad sweet. The place is small, cramped feeling, and the service side was somewhat unfocused. Don’t really see a return here in the cards.

I wasn’t quite in the mood for BBQ and I hold to the notion that if you can’t smell the smoke a quarter mile away then the BBQ must not be all that, so I had the fried shrimp dinner. I was told the shrimp is fresh and not frozen and I am inclined to believe it. The shrimp was really tasty. Served piping hot, not greasy, and not rubbery or overcooked. Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised! I had the candied yams and slaw. The yams were very sweet but had a nice cinnamon spice to them. The slaw, unfortunately, had nothing stand out about it. The sweet tea was Southern sweet, i.e. So much sugar the spoon nearly stood up in the glass! You’re given the option of hush puppies, corn sticks or rolls. I chose the corn sticks as it was something new to me. I wasn’t in love with them and next time I’ll definitely try the hush puppies. But… The absolute best part of the meal was dessert. There’s only one item on the dessert menu: banana pudding. Again, I was a tad skeptical about the quality but exceedingly happy to find it was truly homemade. Filled with bananas, custardy, topped with merengue, and served warm; it absolutely won me over. I will be back to try the BBQ and have more banana pudding(just like grandmas every where make!) The atmosphere was the only reason I took off stars. It was way too warm inside and while there were plenty of seats, it wasn’t particularly inviting. The wait staff ranged from helpful and friendly to one who was obviously annoyed and bored with being there. The Take Out line was constantly moving and very busy so next time I’ll probably call ahead to order.
