This is an awesome barbecue place! The ribs are to die for, and all menu items that I’ve ordered are delicious! Their portions are huge and won’t leave you feeling hungry at all. This is one of our go-to restaurants if we ever have company in town and don’t feel like cooking! A must-try if you enjoy barbecue!

Excellent food and friendly service! We are here 3 times in 2 days while moving. The BBQ sandwich, sweet potato fries, burgers and banana pudding are delicious! So glad this place is 5 minutes away from our house!

Not sure why this business is named: Stubbs & Son BBQ? By the signs at roadside, the building and inside, you would think that they would be all about BBQ. But the only thing resembling BBQ on the menu mounted inside, is the chopped-pork sandwiches and plates. The exception to this is the BBQ Chicken and Ribs, offered only on Wednesday nights. To make matters worse, it’s not even BBQ in the true sense of the delicious, wood-smoke pork shoulders that have made North Carolina famous! That was the first thing I asked the girl at the counter upon entering; is the pork wood-smoked? «ummm, I don’t know, but I’ll ask. and when she returned, the all too common response is no, I’m sorry, it’s just slow baked. It’s sad that so few«BBQ» restaurants call oven-baked pork shoulders BBQ, and don’t take the effort and time to serve up the good stuff. So, not wanting to waste $ 4.50 on another run-of-the-mill chopped pork sandwich, I opted for the flounder sandwich, also priced at $ 4.50. I would not have minded the price point of the sandwich, had it been good. But it was just OK. It was a decent-sized filet, on a normal-sized bun,(not one of the miniatures that many fast food franchises are now using.(see photo). What made the sandwich just OK was that the fish and breading being a bit over-done, resulting in dry fish and chewy breading that was too thick to begin with. It certainly was not a sandwich that when you took that first bite, you think to yourself… umm, this is really good! And on a side note, when I was asking the counter-girl about how the pork was cooked, she told me that she would ask the owner/manager to answer my simple questions, but he refused.

Best bbq in the area hands down! Fries are great. It is not a fine in location. You have to walk up or drive through. It is so worth it!

Their BBQ sandwiches are awesome, but their fries are amazing. They aren’t crisp. Not sure what kind of potatoes they use. They’re soft. which I usually hate. Love these. Great slaw too. Some sort of apple pie for dessert. And terrific sweet tea. All in all a great mom and pop meal. Caution, they sometimes have potholes in the parking lot and just off/on the road that are kidney-busters… other than that minor problem. lol… you’ll love it.

If you come here and don’t get the bbq sandwich and some banana pudding you’re doing it wrong cause they are crazy good. This place is like Smithfields but way better quality and cheaper too. Banana pudding is incredibly thick and perfectly sweet. Loved it!

The barbeque is very good: tasty and they pile it up on the bun. One sandwich is almost too much for one person. But the star of this place, in my opinion, is their burger. One of the best in town. A must try. Well worth the price.

Okay, I’d give it a 4.5 if I could, say 90% out of 100%. I love Eastern NCBBQ, so I will drive from Pinehurst to get it here, a 15 mi or so drive. It’s classic, no frills, no seating, I usually call ahead. Hushpuppies are awesome, I prefer more of a mayo style slaw, and I like my BBQ chopped good, this is more pulled than chopped, but I just chop it more when I get it home, it’s all good. Big sweet tea and that’s a great lunch Carolina style!

Very delicious BBQ! Usually when my husband and go through the drive thru here we get the BBQ plate which come with a heaping portion of pulled pork, 2 sides and hushpuppies. The pulled pork is vinegary and has some good spice to it! There is a ton of it and that is why we typically share. The hushpuppies are fantastic and perfectly cooked, not too dense. The homemade lemonade is spectacular as well! Also try the fried pickles. Great prices and really nice employees!

We were on our way to Cameron, NC and decided to stop off at a local place for a bite to eat along the way. Stubbs & Son BBQ was conveniently located right off of the highway. There was plenty of parking available, and this little BBQ stop even featured a drive-thru for customers who were in a rush. There is no interior seating at this pit stop. However, there are clean picnic tables set up to the left of the property under the shade of some trees. I loved the fact that they had a 100-grade rating, and it showed. The interior was extremely clean(You could even say it was ‘sparkling’). Despite it being a small restaurant with just enough room for you to get inside and walk up to the ordering window– it smelled clean and was really well ventilated. The staff members were so incredibly friendly, and the service was prompt. As for the food — expect generous portions if you order the barbecued meat or a side of french fries. Also, the«large» soda sizes are truly large. We ordered a variety of food — from pulled pork to fried okra, hushpuppies, french fries, and a grilled cheese sandwich. All of the food tasted fresh, and it was served piping hot. We liked the fact that you could basically look past the attendants and see exactly how your food was being prepared. We weren’t there long before a crowd of people amassed behind us(the line was practically out the door). We also noticed that there was a line of vehicles wrapped around the building. The only minor thing I’d like to mention revolves around dessert. For dessert, we ordered the banana pudding, and while the dessert tasted wonderful, we found that there were more vanilla wafers than there was actual banana and pudding. This made for an extremely dry consistency. We all agreed that we would definitely come back here again. They do accept credit cards(except Amex), and they also have a small ATM tucked inside, in the far right corner when you walk in. You definitely get your money’s worth here — in quality of service, atmosphere, and the quality of the food.

Very good pork barbecue and homemade sides. They put dill pickles in the potato salad and it was not sweet; it was very delicious. They put celery seed in their coleslaw just like my mama! The best part though was the banana pudding. I don’t even like banana pudding, but this stuff is amazing! So obviously homemade with plenty of real cream. Adding this to my list of good barbecue in the area. Word to the wise though, they do not have a dining room so you have to either take it with you or eat in your car.

Russell C.‘s review should be deleted. They accept Visa and MasterCard now(and they still have an ATM in the corner). Michael M’s tip should also be deleted. Their BBQ plate is a classic Carolina style BBQ(i.e., very vinegary). The fries are tasty, but a bit soggy. The hush puppies are pretty darn good, but could be a bit crispier on the outside. The hot dog is only $ 1.75 and pretty tasty, especially of you order it «all the way» with slaw and chili. The hot dog could be a bit larger, but then they’d probably have to charge more. Overall we like this local joint. There is no seating, so most people eat in their cars. There is a drive thru on the left side of the building for those who don’t want to get out of their car. And you can call ahead. Good food. Friendly service. What more can you ask for(except for seating)?

First let me say thanks to Fred B. I am never disappointed when I follow his reviews. Traveling from Fayetteville to the Triad and made a stop here. Note: If you want ribs, they are only available on Wednesday’s after 3pm. Which leads me to say check their hours before you make a special trip. This is a carry out spot with a few picnic tables under shady trees. On a good day, it’s nice. I went with the BBQ sandwich, dog, fries, and sweet tea. The BBQ is awesome! It’s a large sandwich with moist, coarse strands of meat that is more pulled than chopped. The sauce is minimal and not overwhelming leaving the sandwich not too wet. The slaw on top was the perfect compliment; right amount, right sweetness, and right moisture. If you are like me, I hate when the meat falls out of the sandwich when I pick it up to bite. I always have to stop and open my bread and insert the meat back in. Here you won’t do that because there is plenty of meat on this sandwich that you may welcome a little swine seepage so you can take human size bites. Plus it makes for a nice 3 finger finally when your sandwich is gone. :) A red-skinned dog joined the party wearing the same slaw along with chili(dog sauce), onions and mustard. Definitely worth $ 1.75. The fries were fresh cut potatoes and fried to a nice caramel complexion, just as fresh cut fries should look. :) the serving is a nice portion size with an adequate pinch of salt. This is one of the best BBQ sandwich/hot dog combo meals I have ever eaten. Oh, the service is fast and friendly too.

I used to live in NC and really enjoy eastern NCBBQ. This place is perfect. The pork is incredibly tender and has a good amount of heat. We ate underneath three trees on picnic tables in the sand. This is how it’s supposed to be!

Jimmy Stubbs, who has owned and operated the Allen & Son BBQ location in Pittsboro for a number of years, opened this restaurant in late 2013. It started out as Allen & Son BBQ, but has recently changed names to Stubbs & Son BBQ to reflect the family ownership in a more public way This spot was the location of Jackson Bros BBQ for years, and the setup remains the same. This is a takeout place only, there is no seating. You order and pay at one window, pickup at the next window, and head to your car or truck to open your bag of goodies, and literally, pig out. Though the pork that Stubbs cooks is no longer over hardwood coals, this is still very good Eastern NC style barbecue. It is moist and tender, more pulled than chopped, and has a nice amount of heat, as evidenced by the visible red pepper flakes in the ‘cue. This barbecue on a sandwich, with their mayo based slaw, is outstanding. The Hot Dog here is among my very favorites, it is only a very, very small notch below the fabulous dog at PB’s in Winston Salem — high praise, indeed — and at $ 1.75, not a bad value at all. The Burger here is also very, very good — in fact, I would come here just for the burger and dog if the barbecue was not here — and I mean a destination trip, not a ride by. Sanford has picked up a gem. And bring cash — they don’t take CC here.
