OK – so I wanted to respond to the other guy Andrew. I used to work for«Bob» when he had a store in Texas — He’s anything but a swindler. A very nice guy, very helpful, and admittedly not a very cut-throat businessman. That’s probably why his last store fell through(well, that, and location). So I know there’s no way he’s the shrewd, calculating businessman that you allege in your post. Anyway — its a lot more likely that he was disorganized enough not to know what the adapter was worth and then to just panic and pick something out of the air. Granted that’s a little ridiculous, but whatever. I would expect a little markup for the convenience(thats how small town stores operate — they have a lot of expenses and still have to make money, you know) but I can guarantee you that Bob is not intentionally cheating anybody. When I worked with him, he did his best to serve customers and provide them the convenience of random gizmos at a convenient location. Over time he pretty much knew everybody in town. Again — just wanted to correct your assumption about somebody who is a good guy just trying to make it with a small business.

First review! Went in search of a small electronic adapter. The«Bob» guy said that he does have it on a shelf in the rear. I went and picked up the adapter, noticed that there is no price sticker on it, and asked«How much?» «Bob»: «Umm… umm… Thirty dollars.» I pointed out that this item would usually cost about 5 dollars. Just as a matter-of-fact statement, and I was not asking or expecting him to reduce this price that he had invented. However, «Bob’s» reaction was to mutter something about«The difficulties of being a retailer», suddenly become belligerent, and physically usher me towards the door, making a sweeping motion with his arms to indicate that I should leave. Since this store is located in one of the most prominent shopping centers on the island, it must have a fairly high overhead cost in the form of rent. Yet, it is a small space with a limited range and selection of items. So, put those two facts together, and what do you conclude? Answer: that the premise of Bob’s business is to charge exorbitant prices for electronic items in the hopes that tourists will be too ignorant or too inconvenienced to go elsewhere. Basically, the guy doesn’t especially deserve your business, also you probably CAN find the same item for much less if you look elsewhere on the island. I did by going to another store two blocks down the street to the east. Bob makes two rather cynical calculations:(1) Tourists are not smart enough to know how much things really cost(2) Tourists are not smart enough to read reviews of local businesses online.
