After going to the House of Soul Food(which was amaaazing and located across the parking lot), my friends and I knew we had to try the House of Chicken and Waffles. I ordered a kids meal which came with a drumstick, a waffle and steak fries. Maybe it’s ’cause I don’t eat a lot of food but it left me stuffed. And the food was quite tasty. Our waitress was so nice and I felt so welcomed. She started telling me that I looked like someone she knew. Lol. For a Friday night, the place was really slow but no complaints. Also, you pay for your bill at the counter(took my group awhile to figure that out). Overall, a great place to have dinner!

Not happy at all. I paid $ 18 bucks for fried chicken dinner for my boyfriend and let me tell you.(in his words) the food was horrible. The chicken tasted like it had already been made and refried to heat it up. It was so dry and no flavor. The size of the collard greens container was like 2 ounces and tasted like they had been sitting there all day. Needless to say he was not at all impressed and we probably will not be going back there anytime soon.

Came here because we wanted some authentic Southern/Cajun/Creole food but southern hospitality is the last thing we got. We came in and was not greeted. I was confused if the lady was a customer or worker. In fact I wasn’t even sure if I had entered the front door, side door or back door lol. We got seated with our menus but didn’t get a welcome or anything so it was definitely kind of awkward. I was very hesitant on staying. I was ready to bounce. The restaurant was near emptied too. The only reason we stayed is because the next room had a big party. I was thinking okay if someone is holding a party here that must mean the food is okay so let’s stay then. The menu was confusing to read. I didn’t even know the dinner plates came with two side dishes until the waitress told me. I was like dang that’s expensive for two pieces of chicken but thank goodness it came with two sides. So hubby got cat fish, ribs, fried okra, rice with gravy, corn bread and I got fried chicken, ribs as well, cole slaw, Mac and cheese and hush puppies. We ended up ordering two grape koolaids halfway through our meal because we were like… well we’re probably not gonna come back so might as well go all out and try something else too. The ice cold bottomless koolaid was good but… it was so hard to get a refill. The restaurant got busier and it reassured me that this place must be good since more people are coming. So the waitress got busy and we didn’t get our fried okra and hush puppies until the END of our meal. We did remind her once and she said it would come out right away but I think she forgot… My hubby told me to call her so many times but I didn’t want to keep on bothering her. The food was overall good but not as good as I’ve imagined. My mac and cheese was cold. I didn’t get to take advantage of the unlimited koolaid because the waitress was busy and didn’t check on us as much as she should have. They forgot about our fried okra and hush puppies. The corn bread seemed old. So the food overall is okay. The service could have been better. Wish we got greeted when we came in and wished the waitress had checked on us more. I think there needs to be better management and better training for the employees. I’m sure the employees are doing what they know but needs to know what they are doing wrong. The need constructive criticism so they can improve and provide better service. I just wish we had better service that night. I wish the food didn’t take that long to come. I wish the waitress checked on us more. I wish I got more koolaid refills! Oh yeah the price she told me the koolaid was different from what I was actually charged. I think we’ll go to Smoking Pig instead next time. What would Aunt Mae say if she saw what was going on?

I saw a movie and this dude sprinkled some corn starch down his pants and onto his balls when on a long drive. Some other dude said that’s how you make hush puppies. Then I remembered that I needed to review this place. How I heard bout this place: Took a hint from a local and never looked back. When you see a restaurant full of Black people with a soul singer singing in front of a live band, you know you got the real deal. Pretty sure we were the only Asians in the crowd. When me and mah gurl were there, we could barely hear each other talk, but food tastes better when you’re screaming the shit at each other and actually having a good time(basic principle #99). The vibe was kicking and I was down to pound. I don’t usually go for Southern food(hence my slim figure…), but when I do, I don’t care what people think of me when I’m shoving hundreds of calories down my throat like it’s fucking Thanksgiving. I wanted to make sure I was sober, because when I’m pounding Southern food and my teeth look like a mosh pit, I don’t wanna be drunk because then I’ll think everything tastes better than it actually is, and I’ll probably order too much, and that’s ESPECIALLY true with Southern food. The waiter saw I was having a good time and he offered me a chocolate shot of something on the house and… what the hell… this shit right here is the kinda shit you dream about. You know a place is good when the worst part was the wait. I don’t think it was more than 20 minutes but whenever a dish got brought out, I was all like«CUHHHMMMMAHNNN I JUSWANNAHAVE A LOOK-SEE…LEMMEHAVE A LOOK-SEE» I ordered the fried chicken and beef ribs combo, with sides of collard greens, macncheese, and hush puppies. The collard greens was salty but good, and I never had hush puppies before but…(see first paragraph). The mac n cheese was dece. And…the fried chicken… well it was fucking glorious, what did you think I was gonna say? Crispy and juicy just how every fried chicken should be. THAT’S ALLFRIEDCHICKENNEEDTOBE. Got that good old comfort food ya bettah not eat everyday feel to it. The beef ribs was nice and saucy and a perfect complement to the fried chicken. $ 18 may seem pricey but they back it up by sending cocaine punches to your taste buds. Overall? It’s unpretentious, it’s delicious, and you better come with an empty stomach, because when you’re finished, you gon reupholster that shit. Strong 4 outta 5

Beyond pissed. Our first time here 2 adults + 2 drinks(non alcoholic) = $ 70 You better off going to KFC, kraft Mac n cheese is way better, bring your own drink unless you want to become a type 2 diabetic. Service is ghetto.

Interesting variety of chicken and waffle flavors, but the quality of food is just average. Do try to the sweet tea or kool-aid. You’re in for a treat. The deets: The bacon waffle is a unique way of waffle consumption. However it comes out a bit too soft and not enough flavors of bacon. Though I saw many pieces of bacon incorporated into the waffle, I barely tasted the bacon itself. It had to be combined with the syrup and butter to make it taste better. Loved the spices in teh chicken, however it was tough. If the main emphasis was the chicken, Lillie Mae was not up to par. Basically they were using the spices to compensate for the lack of flavors in the meat. And the chicken just wasn’t juicy enough to make my mouth water. The sweet tea is very sweet, but pretty good. May want to mix it with regular tea to combat the sugary taste. I did like the kool-aid. It was a nice added touch to have it blue and gold for the Warriors victory.

This is my second time here. We came because we’d come once before and really enjoyed the food, ambiance, and service. Sadly, those things were not up to par on this visit. We ordered the fried chicken and waffles, the shrimp po boy, and their lunch fried prawns. Well, we watched two parties and one bar guest all get their food ordered and delivered before us even though they were seated much later than our party of 3 after us. So we ask what the wait time on our food is and were told that they had to go next door to their soul food portion for shrimp. And that it’ll only be 2 – 3 more minutes while the bread for the po boy is toasted. Well 10 minutes and another table with their order before us, we get our food. I ordered their fried shrimp. I’d previously had the shrimp po boy so I figured it would be good. Nope. I paid $ 13 for 5 pieces of unpeeled cornmeal fried prawns. Only 5 pieces?! You must be just as dumbfounded as I am! So I ask if they gave me the right amount and they say yes that if I wanted more I could upgrade to the dinner plate. Ok how many shrimp come for the $ 16.95 dinner plate? 6. Also, it’s fair to note that all the chicken and waffles plates being delivered before ours had large chicken pieces on them while ours had a small wing and drumstick. Overall, this place made me regret coming back. We did ask what the difference between them and the soul food portion was. Chicken and waffles has chicken and waffles and overall more food options than their soul food restaurant.

What a shitty way, to start off a beautiful Sunday. Here’s how it all went down… PIC was craving soul food and since the first and last time we visited Lillie Mae’s House of Soul Food(LOCATEDNEXTDOORTOTHISPLACE) several months ago, we’d had such a good time and delicious meal, we thought it was the place to go in order to satiate the craving. Fuck all, we were so wrong. I checked my trusty(albeit not today) Unilocal app, to ensure they were open and it said that they were. We rolled up and noticed it was in fact, closed! And yet, next door, there was another Lillie Mae’s which was open and looked busy, so we rolled in and inquired what was up. The guy, super nice, told us that the other place was no longer open on weekends but this one offered up a yummy buffet. Now we’re not buffet types but figured it was worth a try since our first visit to the location NEXTDOOR was a good one. He didn’t tell us the price and we forgot to ask, figuring that a few pieces of fried chicken, catfish and some sides couldn’t cost more than 10 – 12 bucks a head, right? WRONG! DEADFUCKINGWRONG! We saddle up outside, order a couple of Blue Moons and get a round of food. Here’s what we got: 1. A few pieces of fried chicken. Delicious! 2. A few pieces of fried catfish. Also delicious. 3. A piece of cornbread. Also delicious. 4. Baked beans. Decent. 5. Mac n cheese. Absolutely disgusting and better used for spackle. 6. Green beans. Toxic!!! 7. BBQ chicken, slathered with some nasty ass sauce because without it, it was totally insipid. When the bill arrived, I almost fell out of my seat. It was $ 24.00 per person, plus another $ 5.00 for each beer. Yes, with tax our bill was a whopping $ 62.00!!! Now that’s what I call a good southern ass fucking. Great way to start off a Sunday, right? Now we know why so many customers, who couldn’t get in to eat next door, came over here and then walked right out. They must have been smart enough to ask«how much» before sitting their grease and salt craving asses down for a meal. Now don’t get me wrong. I don’t mind dropping some serious coin for a good meal, but sadly, this buffet scored very poorly, considering half of the items on the plate were inedible. Yes, the fried chicken and catfish were delicious, but not at that price. One thing I hate, is getting ripped off, especially when it comes to food. Because of this, I’m not sure I’ll ever go back to their regular restaurant anytime soon. As for their buffet, I’ll definitely never go back for that… unless of course, I’m craving another southern flavored ass fucking in my wallet. Good times y’all.

Chicken– Crispy, crispy, crispy… and juicy! The waffle was good but I would prefer more crunch on the outside. The bbq brisket was okay but not fantastic. It was shredded and I prefer slices personally. Corn bread and mac and cheese? Delish! I am giving 4 stars here based on amazing fried chicken and an incredibly happy and courteous server. The ambiance could be jazzed up a bit but ignore that and just come for the chicken.

I would actually give this place a 3.5. Waitress was super nice even though it was pretty empty. Food: Original chicken and waffles and the bacon waffle. Food came by super fast. Chicken was delish. It was juicy and greasy, in a good way. The waffle was super soft and fluffy. I would prefer it a little more crunchy but it was good either way. I got the bacon waffle. You can taste the bacon as its sprinkled on the top. It says the bacon is suppose to be whipped inside of it but I am not sure about that. The Grape Kool Aid is suuuper sweet. If you like sugar you should get that drink.

Service. Very unprofessional and lost. It took several minutes before anyone came by. When they did, they asked what we wanted to order. Ah, we needed the menus first! After ordering drinks and our meals, an older lady that could barely walk brought our waters. She then put straws into our waters. Mind you the draws were not sealed in paper. They were the kind that you would dispense yourself at Costco. We all looked at each other and hoped she had washed her hands! Meal. The fried chicken was crispy outside, juicy and tender on the inside. We liked it. The bacon waffle, while soggy, had good flavor. The salt from the bacon was a welcome addition. I’m sure we’ll come back some day after forgetting this last experience.

So happy to find a place to get my smothered chicken and sweet tea fix in the bay area! At first I accidentally went into House of Soul Food on the other side of the parking lot, which has a slightly different menu(no waffles!) and is also a «order in line at the counter» type of place; no table service. I was about to just get whatever, but then decided to double-check my location and was glad I did. I went with the smothered chicken — with collard greens, mac n cheese, and cornbread — and cleaned my plate. I also drank about a gallon of sweet tea, which they said was just Lipton’s, but I swear it didn’t taste like Lipton’s. Service is friendly but hit or miss. Nice hearty portions, and I thought the price was pretty fair, considering the amount and variety I got — my meal ended up being about $ 20 total, including tip. *On Sundays the only option is the buffet. For better quality and more choices, stop by on other days. It’s not even that great of a value, since the regular portions are plenty huge, and buffet ended up ~$ 30 with a drink. *Also, their menu only has certain specific«combo’s»(atrocious apostrophe use theirs) and they won’t let you order the stuff in the combos separately, which is super annoying.

After trying Lillie Mae’s House of Soul Food next door, next on my list too try was their chicken and waffles. Originally only offered on Sundays, they’re offered daily at their restaurant next door — Lillie Mae’s House of Chicken and Wafflez(formerly known as Lillie Mae’s Living Room Bistro). It’s pretty much the same as the restaurant next door but I guess they focus more on chicken and waffles. They do offer other meat options that are the same as next door and also have the same kool aid and sweet tea drinks. Ken L. and I were excited to try their newly renamed restaurant due to a recent Living Social deal for $ 20($ 41 value) for a hearty chicken ‘n’ waffles meal for two. This includes 2 pieces of fried chicken, waffles, and Danyelle’s Ghetto Grape Kool-Aid mimosas. Waffle choices include: peach cobbler, ghiradelli chocolate chip, loaded makin bacon or fried chicken in waffle. I ordered my fried chicken with a Ghirardelli dark chocolate chip waffle and their special mimosa while Ken L. had his chicken with the waffle that came with bacon bits and their famous sweetened ice tea. Danyelle’s ghetto grape kool aid mimosa is made with their ghetto grape kool aid, sparkling moscato, and sprite. While I’m not a fan of grape flavor, I was curious how this would taste. It really wasn’t for me. You couldn’t taste the moscato but did taste a hint of sprite. I’d stick with a regular mimosa over this one. I’m not the biggest fried chicken fan either and was surprised that I actually enjoyed their fried chicken. It was lightly battered and did not come out greasy like other places. It was still juicy inside and was seasoned perfectly. The waffle was yummy as well. I’ll substitute waffles over Rice, bread, or other carb options any day. While I enjoyed the food here and would probably give them 4 stars, I would have to take a star off for the slow service. The servers were friendly but service was slow. I guess this was partially due to being being short staffed but we had to really had to work to get someone’s attention.

Lillie Mae’s House of Chicken & Wafflez(HCW) is located right next door to her House of Soul Food(HoSF); it’s essentially the same style of food as HoSF — only it’s a sit-down style with slightly higher prices, but bigger portions. HCW also serves up Lillie Mae’s beloved Chicken and Waffles(ergo the name) everyday as opposed to only on weekends at HoSF. They also dish up BBQ and Southern-style dishes much like HoSF. Everything I’ve eaten at both places has always been very good to excellent. Here’s what I’ve tried at HCW so far: Sides: Baked Mac and Cheese– Excellent rendition of this classic Q side dish. The pasta is cooked perfectly and they are very generous with the Cheese. It was so good I had to get it two days in a row! 5* Fried Okra– I’m not typically a huge Okra fan, but these tasty little nuggets are on point. HCW cuts the Okra into little bite-sized pieces; batters them up; and fries them up perfectly. 4* Sweet Potato Fries– I love the way HCW prepares their Sweet Potatoes; they put some kind of seasoning mix –that includes Cinnamon!- and it really just makes the Sweet Potato flavor pop! 5* Hush Puppies– For the uninitiated, Hush Puppies are basically deep-fried balls of cornmeal batter. I wasn’t super impressed with HCW’s version; they were a little too dense and not sweet enough for my taste — can’t win them all. 2.75* Entrées: Waffles– HCW’s Waffle is much bigger than HoSF’s but it’s essentially the same thing. They use a spice mix in the batter that includes Nutmeg which I found a little fatiguing on my palate but other than that the Waffle was cooked up perfectly. For a real special treat I highly recommend getting the Peach Cobbler Waffle. It’s deliciousness and opulence is pretty stellar. 3*-regular Waffle/4.5*-Peach Cobbler Waffle Pork Ribs– Pretty good rendition of BBQ Ribs. They were tender, sweet and slightly smoky. I would prefer them to be a bit more smoky and I like my ribs dry with the sauce on the side. 3.5* Beef Brisket– Really good Brisket that had great flavor and is super-juicy. They also pre-sauce these and that’s kind of a pet peeve of mine — I’m more of an East Texas Dry Rub kinda guy. 4* Fried Chicken– What I really come to HCW for is their perfectly-seasoned and crispy Fried Chicken! I swear I could gobble these up everyday, but I’m sure my cardiologist would not approve. 5* Drinks: Ghetto Grape– While HCW has a full bar I’ll take a Mason Jar of their Ghetto Grape(aka Purple Kool-Aid) any day of the week — and don’t forget to pour one out for da homies, son! 5* Service & Ambiance– Service was very good and kept our cups full and checked on us frequently, but not in an annoying way. HCW is in an old wood building that has a really good chill atmosphere. It’s kept clean, mellow and dark(which I like). The décor is sorta Jazzy and has a slight NOLA flavor — to be honest I think they’ve kept it the same as the previous tenant(Blues Bayou) who also served up Cajun/Soul food. 4* Admittedly this is the only restaurant that I’ve ever been to that specializes in Chicken and Waffles — I’ve never been to Roscoe’s or Brown Sugar Kitchen. The restaurants I have tried it usually have no business serving this type of food, and HCW blows them all away. I am, however, a huge Fried Chicken fan and this is easily amongst the best I’ve had. Unfortunately, there aren’t many options in the South Bay for Soul Food. So, it’s important that what few options we have are quality and HCW is certainly that!
