This is your upscale burger place priced accordingly to its location in downtown Saratoga on Big Basin Way. They did a face lift about a year ago and it has really nice exterior with wooden doors and comfy insides(nice clean bathrooms, too, that’s the first thing my wife usually checks out). This used to be called the VBB — Village Burger Bar — apparently the name has changed sometime in the past 11 months, and it’s now called Big Basin Burger Bar, close enough. Their burgers are fine(details below), mainly though, we picked the place because of the Brussels sprouts that my wife loves so much — I’m not even going there, because I wouldn’t understand… Choice of protein: grass fed beef, free range chicken, bison(naturally organic), ground turkey(natural), salmon, portobello mushroom, or vegan. Grass fed beef works for me! You also get to pick your bun, and by the time you’re done with cheese, sauce, and toppings, it all adds up. Kind of like The Counter burger, only more expensive, even similar choices of protein. Frankly, and regardless of your pay range, I would still consider them a bit overpriced, as I prefer my burger plain and simple — In-N-Out is my kind of place! I certainly understand the pricing given 100% grass fed and organic choices, although that’s unlikely to apply to the rest of ingredients. Also, even though downtown Saratoga has been a bit face lifted in general lately, it’s still not as busy or popular as some of the other South Bay downtowns, so I would expect more reasonable casual places to open up here. Service was good and friendly and the overall impression was that of a 3.5 stars, but I’m rounding up as there were no mishaps.

I understand sport was on the tv and everyone was interested but !! The guy on the register didn’t know what was or wasn’t available. I asked for a sample of IPABEFORE I PAID $ 8 for a small glass and was instantly informed they were too busy for that ! Forget it I said, then I got a sample? The food was excellent but no napkins followed by no silverware followed by no chance to purchase a second beer followed by no water supplied to me equals miserable service– the beer was expensive and all it came in what looked like a small red wine glass– I never got offered water either. The burger was $ 11 and came with nothing, just a burger on a plate. Let me add, 30 minutes have elapsed and no manager to speak to– I asked and I guess I am not important My review based on service should be much lower but the expensive burger was good. From the moment I sat down to asking for silverware and napkin I have had zero interaction with anyone who actually cares — avoid this place unless you either know someone or you like service that sucks

Everything was good. 3 different burgers w various toppings. Fried brussels sprouts. Mac n cheese Fries. Nice interior of the restaurant. Only hiccup was the brutally bad(i.e. slow) tablet-based ordering system that our unfortunate cashier had to endure. But the food prep and delivery was quick. We will be back.

This spot is tucked away behind the 76 Gas Station, their parking lot is super spacious [which helps us as we drive Corvettes and are a bit paranoid], and their are always open spots. Their burgers and the Monkey Business Milkshake was freaking delicious. Meat is organic and cooked just the way i like them. We sat at the bar, which had three massive TV’s and MotoGP was on =) The wait is not long at-all, pretty friendly staff, and the food is great. We will be back!

My burger was cooked perfectly and the Brussel sprouts appetizer was great! Was with someone who was terrified of brussel sprouts and they are almostthe entire thing. Will make him get his own order next time. Great beer selection on-tap, too!

4÷30÷16 My prom date and I originally planned to go to some pizza place in downtown Los Gatos but it was far too crowded to wait for and we only had about an hour and a half to eat(our prom was at Saratoga Springs @ 7 pm) so we happened to drive by this place and decided to settle for burgers. Service was quick, super friendly lady took our order and complimented our outfits. Sort of crowded but only had to wait 2 minutes for a seat at the bar. The burgers came in less than 10 minutes! They were amazing and a perfect quick bite to have before prom. Definitely coming back to eat again!

My parents and I came for the first time today and it was pretty overwhelming coming into the restaurant and not being greeted nor told what to do. Yes, there is a small sign saying to pick up a menu and choose an item or customize a burger. But the lack of customer service did upset me; especially since the bartender just kept staring at us with an uninterested expression. Once finally figuring out what to order, we decided to get the french moo, peppercorn, classic cheeseburger, garlic parmesan fries and chili cheese fries. I had the french moo and it was pretty good but I wouldn’t call it amazing; although the amount of onions were as big as the beef. My mom had the peppercorn burger and she liked it. My dad had the classic cheeseburger and he was disappointed how his burger didn’t have any bacon; which was interesting since my burger and my mom’s didn’t have any mention of bacon, yet contained bacon. But he said that the classic was just okay. The garlic parmesan fries were pretty good, it did have a lot of garlic and parmesan on it which I liked. The chili cheese fries were just okay; the beans were pretty flavorful but the rest of the meat, cheese, sour cream and fries didn’t have much flavor, even when eaten together. They do have quite a selection of beers but we did not get any. I may come back here again and customize my burger next time but it wasn’t anything unique or special.

Pretty good but overpriced. Lacks customer service — «cups are here, water is there». They’re nice though. Food came out timely. We had the truffle fries($ 6 – 7?), French Moo($ 11), added mushrooms for $ 1, and the Ahi Tuna($ 14) burger. We liked the French Moo more. I loveeeee brie cheese. The bacon was little burnt, and the bun was toasted but cold for some reason. The fries were good, there was fresh parsley, Parmesan shavings, and toasted Rosemary, but I didn’t taste much truffle.

We came to Big Basin Burger after a hike in nearby Villa Montalvo. We were starving and wanted some place that was local that we didn’t have to be dressed up for. There’s only street parking nearby here, maybe there is a lot a bit of a walk away but we were lucky and snagged a spot right out front. We went inside where you grab a menu and go up to the the bar to order. Looking around at the décor it the way I’d think to operate the business but hey, I’m not the business owner. Given how many people were hanging around the cash register, I’m still slightly surprised. My hiking partner and I shared the pork sliders and the classic burger and a beer. Our total was around $ 22 which is a bit on the pricey side given the quantity and quality of the food we received. They have a nice beer selection on tap so that is a plus. The burger itself had little taste to it. I felt like I had to drench it in ketchup to be able to get it down. I was surprised they didn’t even slightly salt the hamburger patty or even season the bun. The pork sliders were spicy, even for dear hiking partner who would eat most hot sauces by the spoonful. The culprit… chopped jalapenos! Me being someone who doesn’t like spicy had to scrape all the slaw off the pork sliders and even then I still had a burn in my mouth. Overall while it is a nice, I’m not sure we’d go out of our way to come back here and would probably venture into the other eats that downtown Saratoga has to offer. 2016 Review #6

Went here this weekend for lunch with my family. I think the burger to bun ratio is not so good, where’s the beef? The flavor was good and the toppings were done well. The truffle parm fries were cold and soggy, there was no truffle flavor, the parm was really cold and just lobbed on top, not good at all. We had never been there before and the service was not really welcoming… The guy standing at the register was more interested in watching the college basketball game on the TV above his head than communicating with customers… I know sometimes you hit a place at the wrong time, but I probably won’t give it another go.

Dined here yesterday. Had the pulled pork sliders and an order of onion rings. They were delicious! I was especially impressed with the sliders. There were so many wonderful levels of flavor. The bun was lightly sweet and toasted — yum. The sliders came with grilled pineapple and delicious toppings. Everything was very fresh and tasted great! I’ll definitely be coming back. Next time I think I’ll also order one of their milkshakes. They had several on the menu — and all of them sounded fabulous.

Delicious burgers and sides, nice selection of beers and extremely friendly service. We came in around 2 and were starving. Kid and I ordered build your own burgers. I had beef with american cheese, onion strings and kid had bison, with mozzarella and fried egg on brioche. We also ordered sweet potato fries and onion rings. The friendly waiter heard us talk about how starving we were and as we sat down offered us free tater tots. Score! Everything was delicious and far superior to the Counter imo.

My family and I had just finished a 5k walk and were VERY hungry. We decided to try out Village Burger Bar because our other restaurant was closed. I’m so glad we did because we loved it! We decided to customize our own burgers. I chose a salmon burger with a bunch of fillings. I also chose a side of regular fries as I have to have fries with my burger! :) My burger was delicious and was filled with delicious filings! I loved the garlic aoili sauce that I picked! It was very flavorful. My family really enjoyed their burgers too! The fries were great– nothing over the top but still good. I will definitely come back when I’m craving burgers! Great place!

Nice neighborhood burger place. A bit upscale both in price and quality. It’s our go to place for a quick dinner or take out. Build your own or one of their pre defined combos. I usually get a variation on the turkey burger. It’s real food with real tastes. Good if you are in the neighborhood!

As my wife puts it — «we should just go to Red Robin. VBB is a logistical nightmare.» And she couldn’t be more right. Pros: Burgers are pretty good as is the pulled pork sandwich and onion rings. Good beer selection. Cons — there’s s ton wrong with this place: Awkwardly set up tables and incredibly limited seating. You will have to scrape with other customers for limited seating — this last visit, my family was patiently standing in the middle of everything waiting for a table to be cleaned off to have a pre-teen try to slide in and claim the table for his family. Ordering station right in the middle of everything that you will have to visit multiple times to make multiple orders if you want more than one beer or forget that nothing comes with fries or any side dish. The self serve drink station located right in the middle of a very busy area. People standing around not sure what to do to get seated, how to order or lining up all over the place to try to place an order. If you are at the bar, people are all around you standing or walking around or lining up to make an order. Not very comfortable unless the place is empty. While the people who work there have gotten considerably better at their jobs since they opened, they aren’t particularly helpful, seem pretty well resigned to knowing that the situation is a shit show and will not really try to help out but constantly explain the weird way you have to do everything — this last visit we were all boxed in to one of the weird spaces, trapped by other customers and my 65 year old mom asked a server for catsup. We got a great explanation as to where we would have to go get it ourselves, so I had to awkwardly work my way out of the seat, go get catsup and then squeeze back in past another group of similarly crammed in people. Kids burgers are tiny compared to other places and don’t come with fries or a drink. The overall price balloons once you add fries and drinks. The acoustics inside are the worst. Granted I have a hearing problem and am probably more sensitive than others to this, but I can not hear anyone at all and have to read lips to know what people are saying. Others have told me they feel the same though. Bottom line: while I was initially excited for a more approachable family friendly restaurant in the village, I wouldn’t go back ever(unless they started seating people and went to having waiters.) It’s more expensive than you would expect due to having to add on fries to every order. The atmosphere is loud and I generally leave annoyed that I have to get up and tend to something at least 4 times or more per visit. Especially if you have a family, your much better off going to Red Robin(as much as it pains me to say that.)

I’m downgrading VBB down a star due to the last experience I had here. Our experience was pretty much the same as last time. We ordered burgers and fries and some beers for our entire party. We had five adults and a kid which is very hard to get in a space so small. We actually had to wait for tables to get freed up so that we could all sit together. The thing that docs VBB a star is that the fact that we got overcharged by $ 6 on our credit card when paying. Originally I left a $ 10 tip for a $ 96 total order. Yes that’s only 10% but are we really getting service here? All they are doing is bringing us the food to our table. I mean they do that at Carl’s Jr in the old days and I never tipped them anything. A month later, I look at my bill and instead of $ 106 total, it said $ 112 on my statement! WTF!!! That shouldn’t have happened. I don’t write messy when it comes to signing credit card slips so I don’t understand how I could have gotten charged an additional $ 6 that I never intended to give? The fact that this happens shows that this business doesn’t have any controls to insure accuracy and prevent customers from being overcharged. Yes it is only $ 6 and I’m not going to file a complaint with the business but it does not give me any inclination to come back here. As you can see below and above my review, there are plenty of people who had an «un-smooth» experience. Finally, they still don’t toast or warm their buns when they bring you your burgers. Cold buns and warm burgers just don’t jive together. Please VBB, get your act together and polish up on delivering a better experience for your customers or you won’t last that much longer.

I’ve been here a couple times now and like it because it is friendly, local, comfortable and has a great beer selection. I would give it a four star rating, but am holding back because I find the burgers to be novel, but sort of over priced for what they are. I will probably go back a third time because of points one and two and just make sure I tread a narrow path in burger selection. The last time there, ordered a nice meat burger and my wife ordered a veggie burger. I tend to think of veggie burgers as that place that cardboard that cannot be further recycled goes to die, so I was not surprised that her VB was not that great. However I was surprised that it would exist in Saratoga and cost as much as it did. It was on the borderline of «let’s complain». Now, I would say that we are poor at complaining in restaurants, which is too bad because I know most of them, the VBB especially, want to know what we think and want to make it good for us. In any case, avoid the Veggie. My two beef burgers were pretty good, but not so good that I will dump Five Guys. The VBB burgers are made with great ingredients and artisan bread, and taste very good, but don’t leave me dreaming about them. That said, they are made from great ingredients and come with all the trimmings you want. They are cooked to order. The service is nice enough, but somewhat uneven in tempo. That is, our fries(I like the garlic fries) came out well before the burgers. I like them at the same time. Also, this is not a place to go if you are in a hurry. Your order is made for you, so it takes time. We’ve met the owner, and he is a nice guy and very engaged. He hires local kids when he can. The restaurant is in an older space and I am guessing because of this the flow is a bit weird and, to me, ungainly. It is a short storefront with a long and skinny floor plan. There is a long counter which has your custom order form and pencils that you use to input your order. You then move several feet down the counter to give your input to the cashier and also pay. The above does not describe how awkward this is to use. Anyways, I like this place and will give it a try or two more in hopes that it gets better.

Was so excited to try this place as I’m a big believer in only eating grass-fed meats. We drove all the way in from Cupertino just to try it out. I liked the look and feel of the place — kind of has a Roam Artisan Burger feel about it. The bartender was friendly and I have no complaints about the service. Wasn’t anything to write home about but wasn’t necessarily bad. Unfortunately, the food was disappointing. We had the French Moo and the Stuffed Blue Cheese burger. Our kids had the standard cheeseburgers. I love blue cheese but this was just way too much — instead of complementing the existing flavors, it just took over and annihilated all the other flavors. The French Moo was interesting but it didn’t make me want more. We had the Tater Tots and it kind of surprised us that a place which serves grass-fed and organic food was offering frozen tater tots and fake cheese! We were hard-pressed to find any bacon in our dish, too. Felt pretty ripped off on that one. The pulled pork slider appetizer was the best part of our meal — very good! But sadly, I was disappointed with the cucumber kimchi which the menu stated was on these sliders. It wasn’t much of a kimchi at all — in fact, I could barely locate it! I guess I’m spoiled from the amazing burgers(and cucumber kimchi) at Koji Burgers(in San Pedro Square Market). Somehow my husband’s medium burger got put on our kids«medium well» burger — as my son’s was bright pink and all of ours were cooked to medium well. A small thing but again, if you’re paying $ 75 for a dinner out with the family, these little things shouldn’t be happening. Our fries were undercooked and soggy, too. For a high-end burger joint(i.e. $ 11+ per burger, no fries included), I left feeling underwhelmed and regretful. I’m more than happy to pay higher price points for quality food but only if it’s something I can’t whip up at home. I really wanted to like this place but the food just didn’t do it for us.

I enjoyed my burger at Village Burger Bar but I found their very deep, long and skinny space to be a bit cluttered and awkwardly laid out. The line at the register was more of a scrum, and it was mildly uncomfortable to sit closeby with the crowd lurking behind my back. We entered and exited from the back parking lot, where we passed racks of bagged buns and boxed supplies. I realize restaurants get deliveries, but particularly the store-bought buns should be stored away from the dining area, or at a minimum concealed in some way. These items on display shatter the admittedly unrealistic ideal that the buns and condiments could be house-made on the premises. At least make me wonder. I ordered my Build Your Own Burger — via the form that looked suspiciously similar to the form at The Counter — with the beef patty, American cheese, baby greens, tomato, mayo and a fried egg on the brioche bun. Maybe the patty was just a bit underseasoned and maybe a touch overcooked, but overall it was a fine showing by the kitchen. I’ll go back, but when I do I’ll try to choose a different table, if available.

So, I called in to order my burger to go. I ordered the«stuffed blue cheese» burger($ 11), which is supposed to be stuffed with danish blue cheese, topped with onion strings and bacon and a special bacon mayo on the side. Mr. Man said it would be ready in five minutes. Uh, ok? I get there five minutes later and it wasn’t done yet but that’s ok. I told the cashier gal I’d rather eat it here, and she said ok. A couple minutes later, another guy bring out my burger in a bag for me to go. I ask him for a plate instead, and he obliges. My burger, sadly, is not stuffed with blue cheese. It’s on top of the patty. I’m guessing they were already cooking my burger when I called in(someone else misordered?) so they just threw the cheese on top of my burger instead of making a new one to order. Normally, I’d be super-peeved about this but thankfully my burger was cooked to the beautiful medium-rare I ordered. Onion strings were plentiful. Blue cheese was very strong and overpowered the meat. Bacon was chewy and not crispy as I would’ve preferred. Bacon mayo was surprisingly tasty(and I typically hate mayo). Bun was in rough shape — perhaps they gave me a beat up bun since I was going to eat it at home? Overall, I’d give them another shot — my burger patty was delicious, but it was a $ 12 burger with tax! I’d try the«build a burger» option next time. Disappointed that my order wasn’t as described in the menu or shown on their web site.

Saratoga has a great new addition to its little community. It’s been really dying down in the Big Basin area so this place will definitely help the area. The meats here are grass fed which brings out really great flavor. They could be a bit more generous on the add ons as a naked Bison Burger is $ 11 already. Even such things as lettuce & tomato was just a tiny slice each. But the burger itself was quite tasty. I will be back to try more but hope they can be more generous with the ingredients.

My dining experience here was a-okay. Sat on the outdoor patio since we had a furry friend with us. Our table # on the receipt was«outside dog» haha. There were flies swarming in front of the entrance, yucky. The interior setting was spacious and appeared inefficiently used. Bar with unimpressive wine selections and decent beer selections. Garlic fries were good, didn’t have much of a garlicky flavor, but it was tasty whatever flavor it had… seriously tasted like truffle tries, but one of the waitresses said it was garlic fries. Ordered customized burgers with the check-off list. Burger one with bison was good, I did like the patty. Add-ons included pepperoncini, pickles, lettuce, jalapenos, kale, tomato, jalapeño jack cheese extra $ 1 which I was unaware of and avocado $ 1.75 in a brioche bun. It was a healthy mildly spicy burger. Burger two with ground turkey patty, lettuce, pickles, avocado, pepperocini, onion, pineapple, in brioche bun with thousand island dressing. Except there was no pineapple in the burger because they forgot probs. Didn’t bother to ask since we waited days for the burger, was hungry, didn’t realize it wasn’t there until burger almost devoured. Sauces are an addtl charge. Overall cost is average, but it can easily add up if you get specialty cheese and add ons. Great variety of bun options. Prob won’t be back, nothing memorable.

«If every Pork Chop was perfect, we wouldn’t have Hot Dogs” – Steven Universe After a nice three mile hike at nearby Castle Rock State Park, my 4-year-old and I were absolutely famished! I’m not too familiar with the Saratoga area; so, once I arrived in civilization(i.e., cell reception), I pulled over and Unilocaled us a place to eat. The 1st spot that showed up was Village Burger Bar(VBB) – my app knows me too well! VBB has been open less than two months, which is plenty of time to work out the kinks. So we jetted over and placed our order. Stuffed Blue Cheese Burger: Bun– VBB uses Le Boulanger made Brioche buns; they have a nice spongy texture, and held-up very nicely considering how messy my burger was. My only quibble is I wish they would’ve asked if I wanted the bun toasted; I’m sure I’m in the minority on this but I prefer my buns untoasted. 4* Toppings– I think the Bacon/Blue Cheese combo is quickly becoming my favorite burger. VBB uses a really bold Danish Blue Cheese, but it was just bold enough that it didn’t overpower the rest of the ingredients; the Applewood Bacon was standard tasting, but cooked nice and crisp; the Onion Strings gave the burger a nice crunch; and the Bacon Mayo(served on the side) really tied the whole thing together. 5* Burger– I was a little worried when I saw that they only serve 100% grass-fed beef, as I’m generally not a fan; too«livery» tasting, in my opinion. However, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked VBB’s grass-fed beef; maybe it was the fact that they allowed me to order it medium-rare that made the difference? It wasn’t super beefy, but no livery taste either. 3.5* Tater Tots: Tater Tots drizzled with BBQ Sauce, Cheese Sauce, *AND* Bacon?!? Yes, please! The harmony of all of the above ingredients was like angels dancing on my tongue; the smoky bacon, sweet sauce and savory cheese really mixed well with the spuds. My only complaint was the high price($ 7), and small portion. I’m not sure how they can justify charging that much, considering they’re just store-bought tots. With that being said, I’d probably order it again because it was that damn good. 4* Service & Ambiance– Located in the heart of Downtown Saratoga, VBB has a really upscale feel and look. They’ve got a pretty decent wine and craft beer selection, as well. My son also noted how clean the bathrooms are, so there you have it. VBB is my favorite type of burger place: order and pay at the counter, take a seat and the food is brought out to you. The cashier and the servers were all really friendly, helpful and provided excellent service. 4.5* Value– This is where VBB takes a bit of hit. Granted, they are an upscale burger joint in one of the more expensive parts of Silicon Valley; so, I knew coming in that it’d be expensive. The meal plus drinks came out to ±$ 30, & that’s without ordering a beer, or shake. Expect everyone to pay around $ 20/ea and if you’re cool with that then I say go for it. 2* Overall, I’d rate VBB at 3.5-stars, but I’ll round it up because good food and great service trump high prices. I’d love to come back again and sample their shakes – and some of those beers were calling my name as well! If you’re in the Saratoga area, and looking for a really good burger then VBB is a really solid choice. Recommended!

Great addition to downtown Saratoga. Food — 4 stars Service — 3 stars Value — 3.5 stars …overall 3.5 stars The food was really good. We liked the gal-bi and stuffed bleu cheese burgers — both were excellent. Sweet potato fries were good but onion rings were absolutely not with the $ 5 — it literally came with 4 onion rings! Definitely will not get those again. Service was just okay and it seems like they’re still figuring things out. The ambiance isn’t all that great, they could improve a lot as far as the décor and general atmosphere. This place has some great potential — I hope they make the necessary changes to stay in business. PS — when the waiters bring the food to the table… They should bring utensils and napkins!

Solid four stars. This place is a gem. We decided to drive into Saratoga for a little outing and a quick Unilocal search led us to Village Burger Bar. I was pleasantly surprised. It was quite busy, even for 2pm on a Sunday, but if anything that’s a deal maker, not breaker. I found us a table while my husband ordered our burgers. He forgot to order fries, so I went up and ordered the fries after, making sure to have them delivered with our order. Amazing bonus: They have Coke in a BOTTLE!!! Love it already. Not a big surprise, we got our fries much earlier than our burger. I figured this would happen, but it was still a letdown. The fries were good, but not amazing. Then the burgers came. End of story. They were great. I absolutely loved my burger, and ate every bite of it. It was a little messy, but that just makes it that much better. My husband loved his as well, even going as far as to say it might be the best in the area(Main St. Burger still wins for me). So it would have gotten five stars if not for the fries and the fact that my husband ordered bacon on his burger, but it came without(they were quick to get it for us on the side). Neither of which was a deal breaker, and not a huge deal.
