The boy and I stopped here to try the cupcakes as we are having cupcakes at our wedding and were looking for the best possible local cupcake. We certainly won’t be getting our wedding cupcakes from here, nor will we ever go back. Sensational Cupcakes is a tiny store in Cliftondale Square. It’s very easy to miss. We walked in and my first impression is that they tried to make the décor fancy, which is nice, but it is really dark inside and it smelled. Like a sour smell mixed with cleaning fluid. Not good. There was one young girl working and she could not grasp that we wanted to get six cupcakes, one of each flavor. She also gave us two small boxes with three cupcakes each in them(they didn’t have anything larger?) and we had to finish assembling the boxes ourselves because she could not get them to close properly. We get home and open up one box. The cupcakes are decorated nicely and look pretty. But how do they taste? We split a red velvet one first. It was okay. The cream cheese frosting was fine and the cake was a bit dry. On to the next one. I like to get a plain chocolate and plain vanilla when taste testing as I feel that is a good standard to judge by. A bakery should be able to get the basics right. We split the vanilla cupcake with white frosting and took bites. Now, I’m not sure if they forgot the sugar or what happened, but the frosting had the taste and texture of shortening. Almost like I stuck a knife in some Crisco and put it on a cupcake. Such a bummer and that really put a damper on the rest of the cupcakes. The other flavors we got were strawberry shortcake, banana and peanut butter cup. The banana was probably the best as the cake was pretty moist, but none of them really stood out as «sensational.»

Sensational Cupcakes exists in an unexpected part of Saugus. My friend and I definitely would have missed it if it hadn’t been for her GPS. Anyway, we came in about ten minutes before closing and the three teenage twits behind the counter seemed not too happy to see us. But we(and three of our friends who followed us to the shop) purchased thirteen cupcakes, so I didn’t think we were a nuisance. All the cupcakes were beautifully made and uniquely topped. They were in a word, perfect. I ordered the strawberry cheesecake, the rocky road, the tiramisu, and the peanut butter cup. I tried the strawberry cheesecake and proclaimed it delicious, but after reading the description on their website(which is very well done, by the way), I realized it wasn’t quite«garnished» in strawberries. There was a small slice on top the cake. I cannot wait to try the other flavors, or gnaw on my husband’s cakes. The décor was very cute and the prices were cheaper than the city. Saying this, the place would’ve received 5 stars if the service had been better.

I drive by this place daily on my way to work. I finally went around Easter time and picked up some for the ladies I work with. I grabbed an assortment because there are just too many to choose from. Everyone was very impressed with the flavor and toppings. They really are beautiful little pieces of tasty art! The flavors are really creative. I went back in a few weeks ago, and purchased 20 for my friends birthday party. I also bought a cupcake tower from Michael’s Arts & Crafts store(something I have been wanting for a while anyway) and displayed them all for my friends guests. Her mom bought an Italian Rum cake anyway, so I knew we would have more than enough dessert.(p.s. those rum cakes are my nemesis, yuck) There were so many flavors Red Velvet-, Key Lime Cheesecake(so good), peanut butter cup, bacon and egg! just to name a few. Everything was moist and delicious and of course beautifully decorated. I wish I could post a picture of the cupcake tower! It was impressive. Don’t go into this place if you haven’t eaten yet. :) Also, parking in Cliftondale Square can be a pain, so keep that in mind, and if your in that area, you might as well go to Kane’s Donuts which is a legendary little place in Saugus.

As part of my Great Cupcake Quest, I finally made it to Sensational Cupcakes to try it out. I was happy to see all the different varieties of cupcakes. I ended up buying Red Velvet(of course), tiramisu, cannoli, key lime, double chocolate, and some other one that I’m forgetting. I tried the Red Velvet and the Tiramisu. I was not disappointed! The Red Velvet had perfect cream cheese icing and the cake was red and moist. But my favorite was the Tiramisu. It had a little chocolate covered coffee bean on top and tasted like a mix of liquor and coffee with a creamy center. So good! I will be back for more!

These cupcakes are to die for! I went to birthday party dinner and the host bought these instead of a regular cake and we were all in heavan. Great selection of flavors. I don’t live near Saugus and rarely make it up there, but I would drive out of my way for these cupcakes.

The cupcakes were wonderful! I have been living in New England for the last two months. As a former Pastry Chef I was on a mission to taste every cupcake in Boston. Sensational cupcakes were so good with inventive flavors and priced right at $ 2.25.

The next time you, assuming you are in the know about stuff, are heading to Kanes Donuts to get the best donuts in the land, blow it off and keep going a few more miles up the road in Saugus and check out Sensational Cupcakes. I was the hero at the Superbowl because everyone else brought booze. I brought these: Rocky Road, Key Lime, Strawberry Cheesecake, Red Velvet, Double Chocolate, Cannoli, and a few more. They were fresh, the cake was moist and delicious, the butter cream frosting was amazing, they all had something on top whether a cannoli or a big chunk of chocolate and seriously are beautiful to look at. They are works of edible art and once you buy more than six are only 2 bucks each. Considering a coffee roll at Dunkins is just under a buck and these are easily 5 times better, it’s so worth the money. Next time you’re going to a party bring these and you’ll be a hero too. Real men may not eat quiche — But they do eat cupcakes! from what I hear anyway. Yummy Yum YUM!

Thanks Phantom! One morning while watching your bakery edition, you mention Sensational Cupcakes as your hidden jewel. I had never heard of and had planned to go to Rt. 1 anyways and thought great its in Saugus so I’ll stop in. The place was easy to find off a main street. I enter into an adorable little store and see all the beautiful cupcakes. Very interesting flavors too. The friendly girl at the counter helps me decide and I’m on my way. And at only $ 2.25 each, go ahead and stock up! I decide to go with 4 and have a couple bites of each when I get home. Strawberry cheesecake: Oh my! This may have been one of the best cupcakes I’ve ever had. Wow!!! Red Velvet: Good, I’m not that much of a fan of too much extra red dye but this was nicely done. Great cream cheese icing. chocolate chunk with a red V accent on top. Pure Vanilla: Strong vanilla taste, moist cake. Nice decorative white chocolate chunk on top. Triple chocolate: Super moist and felt like it would ooze chocolate. Well now that I’ve found this place I’ll be sure to spread the word. The counter girl said it’s been open since April. I can’t believe it hasn’t been Unilocaled but I’m sure the reviews will start coming in cause its fab!
