Ok this place is dark and gross. It might be for late night emo crowd but not for a good lunch. The steak in the burrito was so tough I couldn’t eat it. Just a nasty place. Will never go bk and def would not recommend it.

Server let us sit for 15 minutes before saying hello, there was a «bartender» who should have helped her since she was the only server. Nachos were decent, lots of queso, but only four pieces of chicken on the entire full order.

We liked this place, but this past weekend when we stopped by they were closed. Looks like they are closed for good. I alerted Unilocal, but they said they can’t verify that they have shuttered their doors.

Went to this location while taking a tour of Savannah, terrible service had to ask for, plates, utensils, napkins. the server advised us that there were no sides except rice and beans. Food arrived, guacamole was bland, chips tasted store bought, tacos were less than expected… fish tacos served in flour tortillas with little flavor. Stay away

Pretty dope spot. When you walk down the steps, its looks like a place you wouldn’t want to eat. But a look over the menu makes you think there is a portal door to a 4 star kitchen. I Had the special which was a chimichanga filled with some of the best pork I have had in a while, pineapples, and grilled onions with a homemade BBQ sauce. sooooo delicious! Bartender was super friendly. Would definitly recomend this spot for a beer and a bite to eat.

Love it! Cant wait to return next time in Savannah. Looks like just a bar from the sidewalk but when you go down the stairs it is a legit restaurant with a great funky feel. Great tacos guacamole made fresh. Three of us went we all enjoyed our dishes.

Driving back to Florida on 95 we decided to get some Mexican. We hand the door guy our ID’s. I guess because my friend was Asian, the bouncer says in a really douchy tone«Is your middle name really Zachary?»

Not sure what all the negativity was about. Our service was quick and efficient. We had chips, salsa, and a bowl of fresh quac on the table lickity split. My wife ordered the a breakfast tostada as they were serving Sunday brunch. The cheeseburger chimi was highly recommended to me by our server. Both entrees were delicious and served hot. The dishes were very filling so much so we got a box to go. I definitely recommend this place for some really great food, music, and atmosphere.

Que bueno! Had the guacamole and some salsa with my Margarita. The price point was amazing for what I got. It is nestled in the basement of a historic building. Interesting atmosphere, very good for meeting locals. It is definitely a cool spot to visit and grab a bite.

Reverting back to three stars– they are just too erratic on food quality.

Avoid this place. We waited 20 minutes at a dirty table for service. A waitress came by 4 times to serve drinks, appetizer, and food to the table next to us and never acknowledged us. When we finally asked her for help, she asked if we just sat down and seemed annoyed…then went away for another 5 minutes. We got the hint and left. No service. No friendliness. Nothing worth staying for.

OMG. Maybe it was the dark dungeon like atmosphere of what appeared to be a makeshift frat house basement. Maybe it was the fly in the water glass or the causal attitude of the server after we pointed out said insect. Maybe it was the nachos that were so unappealing that none of the five of us dared to take more than one bite. Maybe it was the uncooked rice in the burritos that could practically chip a tooth. Maybe it was that lack of flavor or maybe it was that none of us ended up being able to take more than a couple bites of the detritus we were served. Whatever it was we left hungry and more than a little disturbed at what we witnessed.

Where to start?! I took my visiting friends here, because we were hungry and not much was open at 11am on a Sunday. The skater-hate-my-life/rage-against-the-machine/occupy-Savannah/trust-fund-1%-waiter served us water and with a bug in one of our glasses. We had to ask twice to get a second glass. We ordered the loaded nachos and what came on our table was repulsive. It made me gag; almost as if the kitchen was playing a prank on us. Our group ordered two burritos and a shrimp taco. Two of our entries came back wrong. The rice in the burritos was not cooked, so it was crunchy… and well… not cooked. I picked the chicken out and ate that because I was hungry. We paid in cash and got the heck out. I’ve walked past this place a hundred times, mostly at night and I guess I should have expected what we were served from looking at their clientele. There’s always a group of kids coming out of the dungeon(taco abajo), if you see them, you’ll understand the reference. I would not recommend this place to anyone. not even the occupy-SAV types that frequent the place.

We stopped in for some late night mastication after doing the pub crawl thing. There wasn’t much going on, but that’s to be expected at 1AM. The staff was very polite and energetic. The food was pretty good. Simple but effective.

This place is ok. That is all. Taco Abajo is nothing to write home about. I have had far better for much cheaper. It is a big bar with pool tables. It looks a bit more like a pool hall then a restaurant. It is very dark and tucked away underneath the street. They do have a full bar here, so late night it may be fun. Another disappointing note is that the beer selection isn’t anything special either, I am sorry to say. The tacos are overpriced for the tiny portion you are served. The food really isn’t inventive either. I can’t say I am super impressed. At most my meal here was forgettable. The food could have been fast food for all the impression it made on me. The waitress was nice, and she gave us more than enough attention, but it just couldn’t make up for the lackluster menu. If you need something quick to eat, just want to meet up to play pool or have a beer with buds this place is cool. If you are looking for a new culinary find, skip this joint.

Came here on a Sunday. Saw the menu and decided to give it a try. My husband had the carne asada burrito, I had the carne asada taco, and kids shared beef nachos. Waitress was friendly and made sure our drinks were full, but the food was slow to come out of the kitchen. The burrito was bland and tasted like tomato sauce. I think it must have sat around a while before being brought out because the outside was room temp, but the inside was hot. My taco was ok, definitely wouldn’t consider it carne asada– just loads of unseasoned pulled beef, not chunks of steak. I think the kids won with the nachos but I won’t be coming back, it was loaded with shredded beef, and 2 different kinds of cheese. The salsa that came with the nachos tasted just like tomato sauce straight out of the can too. Definitely not Mexican style tacos or even Tex-Mex. Won’t be coming back.

After a perfectly revolting meal the previous night at Paula Deen Fiasco, we wanted some tacos for Cinco de Mayo. Unilocal guided us to this wonderful basement restaurant. Super disconnect between the presentation and the quality of the food. A shaky start on the service side but then things were up and running and then it was clear that our choice was perfect. Margaritas — nicely tart without any cloying sweetness. Bottomless chips and salsa — finally some with a bit of bite and tons of flavor — combined with guacamole. Beautiful green and handmade. Lovely. Around the table we had a carne asada burrito(really nice); fish taco(lovely, crisp fish), chorizo and black bean taco, chicken taco and carnitas taco. All wonderful. Sides of black beans were really elegant. The rice less so, but not bad at all. Strongly recommend.

My dinner companion and I headed to Taco Abajo around 6PM on a Wednesday evening after reading some good reviews from other Unilocalers. We parked in a nearby deck(the Whitaker Street deck is a GREAT spot for downtown Savannah parking if you plan to head to River Street) and walked up and down Broughton Street for about 15 minutes trying to find Taco Abajo. We had resigned ourselves to eating somewhere else, when we finally found the right door, and I am so glad we did! I was disappointed to see that you had to pay for chips and salsa, but we decided that $ 4 was not a bad deal for bottomless chips and salsa. The salsa was delicious, and the chips were hot and fresh when they came to our table. It didn’t take long for me to decide what I was getting, as I had been craving carne asada tacos all day. I ordered 2 carne asada tacos, and my dinner companion ordered the taco salad with carne asada. I was a little nervous about the multiple toppings that came on the tacos and the salad — guasacaca, queso fresco, lemon-lime crema, and salsa. I asked specifically for corn tortillas for my tacos, but I think flour tortillas are the default. The salad came to our table in a fried shell with meat piled high on top, lots of cheese, and plenty of sauce. The tacos were a little skimpy on the meat, but the sauces and cheese made up for that. I watched as the salad across the table quickly disappeared while I got to work on my tacos. The corn tortillas were a little thinner than I am used to, and they started to get a little soggy as the sauces soaked into them. Somehow, that only made them better! The guasacaca is a sort of spicy avocado dressing that went well with the crema and the salsa on the tacos. I always think about asking for sauces on the side, but in this case, I am so glad I trusted the chef. Our waitress was great and kept our glasses full, always nice when eating as much salsa as we did. The true downside of the evening: I ate so much that I wasn’t sure I could make it back to the car. By the time dinnertime came around the next day, however, I had recovered enough to be craving Taco Abajo once again!

Happy hour from 11am-8pm. 1.25 $ margaritas(that aren’t way watered down) and 2 $ well drinks and 4 $ sangria. Taco Tuesday: 2 for 1 tacos. The chips and salsa were very good. I got a taco salad which came in a tortilla shell. The carne asada was seasoned very well and was very delicious. The place got pretty busy on a weekday for lunch, but not to the extent of having to wait for a table. Service was a bit slow just because there was only one waitress working during the lunch time, but she was very observant and nice. Had a salad, 2 drinks and bottomless chips and salsa(shared with the table) for 10 $. WIN! They also have another room with beer pong tables and pool tables. It looked as if they were remodeling that area, but it was still open to go play in. Definitely something to check out.

Only one night in Savannah, and my friends and I didn’t get out of the hotel until 10PM. As I’m sure the locals know, finding restaurants open this late is not easy on a weeknight. We were going to settle for an «Open ’til 4AM!» pizza joint when I came across a sign promising burritos hung above an open door that led into a basement. Choice made. Taco Abajo has a good beer selection, decent prices, and the salsa is incredible! The more you eat, the hotter it gets. You have to pay for chips and salsa, but they are endless so it’s worth it. I had a carne asada burrito and it was quite good, with a spice that I still have not been able to discern. Flame-toasted tortillas tasted homemade. A burrito, chips, and a Negra Modelo for just over $ 10? I like this place. Also, our waitress was delightful and the music selection was solid. Worth a visit, especially if you’re planning to eat late.
