Decent selection of beers, and good food. The lovely part is the venue itself. Knowing that 130 plus years of history has taken place is amazing. The staff here are nice and the ambiance is ok. Didn’t get a chance to view the dance hall, but will return to see this!

If you decide to dine at Sengelman Hall, you better call ahead. Don’t be shy about asking questions! Everyday is a new day at Sengelman Hall. Although they have stated hours and a nice extensive menu, don’t be fooled. We invited a group of friends to join us there last night because the week before we had enjoyed the best pork schnitzel outside of Germany. The service had been slow, but we had warned them that might be an issue, and the good food would make up for it. Little did we know that the service would be almost nonexistent, limited to the server informing the first two to arrive that we could order only pizza or a burger because of a special event upstairs. He also offered them water which he poured but left on the sideboard. After our entire group arrived, we decided pizza or a burger would be fine. However, we sat there for 20 minutes without one nod from a server. NOTHING. We decided that if we wanted dinner we had two choices. We could crash the party upstairs or move on to another local restaurant. Since we are law abiding citizens, we chose the latter!

Great texas charm in an old school saloon. This place has good food, cold beer, and warm employees. It really is a gem and shouldn’t be missed if in the area.

I travel often and love trying new places I’ve never gone. What a gem. Great place. Good food and atmosphere. Love the old style saloon. Place was built in 1920. Totally renovated. Dancehall upstairs. Great for receptions and weddings. Definitely worth stopping for dinner.

Good pizza. Very nice staff. Don’t be in a hurry. Driving back to SA from Houston with our grandson. Pizza is always our meal on the evenings when we have him. Looked up pizza in Schulenburg. Found Momma’s; but they had no cook when we pulled up. So went to Sendelmann instead. Pizza was very flavorful. Not oily or greasy. Generous amount of toppings. Took awhile. But we expected that. Issue came, in that no-one checked on us until we’d been done for awhile. When or easier finally came over, we asked for the check, & a to go box for our leftover pizza. Waited patiently but didn’t see our waiter again. Finally gave up waiting.. hubby went to person tending bar area. She reached under the counter, gave us a box, and brought our check right then. That extra 30 minutes of just sitting being ignored is irritating when we still have 1.5 hours to drive with an 8 year old in the evening. But I couldn’t take away a star; because that was the only down side. Will probably go back.

I really love this place! I have come two years in a row while passing through in the Texas Independent Relays. Last year I sat at the bar and ordered a couple drinks and sat next to a guy in mud covered overalls on my left and an older gent in a cowboy tie and hat on my right. This year I brought a van of guys with me and we sat in the dinning room with a bunch of other runners and locals at large German style tables. There was a sausage festival/competition outside so there was a good crowd gathered inside. The German roots of this town really show and not only do I feel welcome, but I want to join in on all the fun & I can here! I highly recommend!

We decided not to take the advice from our painted church tour guide. He did not recommend Sengelmann Hall and adviced us to go elsewhere. We wanted to further immerse ourselves in the culture and opted to give the Sengelmann Hall a try… Our server told us she had only been there for 3 weeks so we were therefore able to overlook a few things and just focus on the good. And the food WAS indeed good, we were happy with our choice. It would be wise if the owners of Senglemann Hall would get the tour guides on their side, they could stand to gain or loose business depending on the recommendation.

We came here for dinner, as well as their Wednesday Night Jam. Who could resist free live music? Sengelmann Hall has been restored beautifully, reminiscent of its golden days. The atmosphere and music here is about the best you’ll find in the tiny town of Schulenburg, so it’s worth a stop. I wasn’t really in the mood for an actual entrée, so I got an order of Nacho Fries and an order of Fried Pickle Chips. Ambiance aside, the food pretty much rolls out of the kitchen at a snail’s pace, at least it does on busy nights. It took almost an hour to get our order. This isn’t a big problem when you’re a local and like to visit with other Schulenburgians. If you’re from out of town, I’d imagine this might be more aggravating. With the Nacho Fries, I was expecting gooey nacho cheese, but instead got melted cheddar. I liked the thick natural cut fries though. They weren’t extremely flavorful on their own, but the jalapenos fixed that. The Pickle Chips were definitely more crisp than ordinary fried pickles. I liked the batter, though it was a tad too salty. I asked for some ranch dressing(which in my opinion should have been provided in the first place). It took 10 – 15 minutes for it to arrive, by which point I’d already eaten over half of the pickles. Jam Night is great if you just want beer and music, but it’s probably not the best time for food.

You walk in to an old west saloon bar and dance hall, great ambiance from the start. The cowboy burger was huge and quite flavorful. The schnitzel with lemon cream sauce was a close second to my grandmothers. The service was great and genuinely friendly. Worth the drive off of the highway!

Great place on a Saturday night. Just the right amount of busy. Waitstaff was great in all aspects; friendly, timely. The chicken schnitzel was very good. The owner took the time to show us the second floor dance hall and balcony. Very cool building. While in/near Schulenburg this is the place to go, just notice their hours of operation.

We went around 8pm on a Thursday night. There was only one other family there eating when we got there. We ordered a chicken fried steak meal, a chicken fried chicken meal, a chicken fried pork chop meal and a child’s cheese quesadilla meal. For sides we had mashed potatoes, green beans and black eyed peas. Everything was absolutely delicious. The only thing I would change would be to have gravy on the mashed potatoes, they seemed a little dry without any. The ladies that were working were so nice. One even went upstairs to the dance hall and turned on the lights so that we could go up there and look around. If I am ever in Schulenburg again I will definitely be back.

Compared to everything else in this town, this place is a diamond in the rough. The décor is quaint and totally what you would expect from a family-run small-town restaurant. The beer was cold, inexpensive and of course they had several Shiner beers on tap. The fried pickle chips were excellent as was the burger I ordered.(what diet?) Fair warning… it does not open until 5pm, even on Fridays. So if you are looking for a place to get the weekend started a little early, this is not the place.

We just had my parent’s 50th wedding anniversary party at Sengelmann Hall. The great folks there were gracious hosts to our 30+ person crew. They prepared a delicious buffet style dinner(legit chicken schnitzel and really tasty sauerkraut appetizers), let us decorate with flowers and cakes, and were super accommodating and friendly. They even let us tour the upstairs dance hall and served as impromptu photographers for our big bunch! The building itself is a treasure, and it has been lovingly looked after. The restoration work is stellar and preserves every bit of the 1890’s charm. The big, historic wooden bar is also great place to have beer on a hot Texas afternoon. I could not recommend this venue/restaurant/dancehall/bier garten more highly for hosting your next event, even if that event is just lunch:) Kudos guys!!!

Great historical TX venue with lots of space. Came here for a quick lunch on the way to San Antonio. We had the Brautwurst and sauerkraut, chicken snitzel and fried pickles. I recommend it all!

Neat old building & clean! Appears to be the local hangout. Enjoyed the old folks band playing blue grass. Food was good, but not special. Nice place to enjoy a beverage, good food & music. **Don’t go if you’re rushed, service is friendly but terribly slow, they seemed short on waitstaff. Would visit again.

Nice Atmosphere. Decent menu selections. Despite being almost empty(Thu evening, we were fourth table of people), the food took 45 minutes to arrive, and it was lukewarm to cold. Place had potential, but did not deliver. Will try another place in Schulenberg next time.

My wife had heard a story on Celebrity Ghost Stories about this place with Jewel. We decided since we were close, we would check it out. This place is a 2 story dance hall/restaurant. We sat down and while we were waiting for the waitress, my youngest son and I decided to go to the 2nd floor. There was an identical Dance Hall up stairs and a party which was going on. We went back downstairs and waited. Service at this place was non existent. We about left because no one came and took our order. The lady came by and took our drink order. The Diet Coke and Coke tasted rancid. We asked her to bring us another. The 2nd one was not much better. We placed our order and asked if they had a kids menu. They did not. I did see more than one child in the place. How can you not have a kids menu if you have kids coming to this place? The menu is a mix of pizza, burgers and schnitzel. I ordered a burger and my wife ordered the chicken schnitzel. There were a few large parties so service was taking entirely too long. I believe the people having dinner was for the party up stairs. We finally get our food. The hand cut fries are greasy and not very hot. The burger was big. The only thing good about it was the bun. The burger was bland. If you are going to cook a burger, how about at least some salt and pepper on the meat? The bacon was burnt. The Schnitzel was made with panko breadcrumbs. The German potato salad was a little bland. I wish the waitress would have been more attentive. She never came back to ask us if we wanted refills. I had to goto the bar to get her to cash us out. The food was not bad. For a nostalgic point of view, it is a cool little place. I am really surprised at the high scores. I did not think this place was anywhere near worthily of 5 stars.

Sengelmann Hall is the best and cleanest restaurant in Schulenburg, Texas! We had read about this venue in Texas Monthly and Texas Highways, but had never had time to stop over… But, my husband and I decided to travel down I-10 so we could visit this legendary dance hall. We went to Sengelmann’s new Bakery for fresh fruit kolaches(i recommend the dewberry and pineapple while they are in season) and then walked over to the restaurant for a nice, leisurely lunch. Since we had decided to spend the night, we tasted a few pre-prohibition cocktails(i loved the Moscow Mule and he loved the Southside), and ordered up some fried pickles & mushrooms and a large macaroni & cheese with white truffle oil… yum!!! then, we shared the fresh salmon with champagne dill sauce and garlic mashed potatoes! The waiter said that it the fish is literally over-night-ed(is that a word? ha) to Schulenburg from Santa Monica, California and we believe it! it was sooo good. We split a small Dessert Sampler and the baker featured apple strudel, a parfait with fresh berries and Grand Marnier and a mini chocolate cupcake. it was perfect for sharing! We ended up ordering a dozen cupcakes l before leaving!(yep! that’s how good their desserts are!!) The people who work there are really nice… even the manager gave us a ghostly tour of the entire dance hall, which was really interesting! We were impressed with the original décor… beauty of the walls and bars… and the fact that the owners and staff have managed to capture and maintain its splendor after all those years. There is even a bullet hole in the saloon! Definitely worth the trip to downtown Schulenburg! Sengelmann Hall is one in a million and we definitely plan on going back soon!

We rolled into Schulenburg, which is closer to Austin than Houston surprisingly, with our hopes high for good food and good dancing. Although the sign says that 2699 people live in Schulenburg there was not a soul, nor a car on the road to be seen. We ended up finding Senglemann Hall on accident, but there’s no way you could miss that wonderful outside décor that almost looks like a fun-house from a cheesy carnival movie. The inside is just nice to sit and look at(not surprising as the wife of the owner is the artist commissioned to do the artworks at Bush International Airport) and get a feel for a what a grand establishment of the 1890’s in Texas would be. So, what do they do? They have kick-ass, reasonably priced, life threatening food. Meatloaf sandwich wrapped in multiple pieces of bacon? Good? Yes! Healthy? Negative! That goes for everything else from the Latkes with sauerkraut to the banana pudding. Their pre-prohibition cocktails were a welcome reprieve from the heat, and they were hand crafted with love from the bartenders. They also had a wonderful looking beirgarten that we just couldn’t bear to try out since it was 1 billion degrees outside. The dance hall upstairs also has music most days, and you can check the schedule online, but they often cost a couple of dollars. Unfortunately the day we rolled through the cost was 20 $ per person, and we just couldn’t swing it then. a minor flaw in a wonderful experience. The service is kind of slow, but its friendly and helpful. There’s a lot of love in everything from the cracking paint on the walls which just makes you feel all warm inside.
